All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The invasive larger grain borer Prostephanus truncatus (Horn) is the most important pest of farm-stored maize in Africa. It was introduced into the continent from Mesoamerica in the late 1970s and by 2008 had spread to at least 18 countries. Classical biological control using two populations of the predator Teretrius nigrescens Lewis achieved long-term and cost effective control in warm-humid areas, but not in cool and hot-dry zones. The present study investigated the phylogenetic relationships between geographical populations of the predator. Ten populations of T. nigrescens were studied using randomly amplified polymorphic DNA polymerase chain reaction (RAPD-PCR), sequence analysis of …

Dissemination Of Entomopathogenic Fungi Using Busseola Fusca Male As Vector, Nguya K. Maniania, Elizabeth Ouna, Peter Ahuya, Brigitte Frérot, Anne Emmanuelle Félix, Bruno Le Ru, Paul André Calatayud

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

The stem borer, Busseola fusca (Fuller), is an important pest of maize Zea mays L. and sorghum Sorghum bicolor (L.) in eastern and southern Africa. To control this pest, biological control methods including the use of entomopathogenic fungi are being considered. The pathogenicity of one isolate of Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. and one isolate of Beauveria bassiana Bals. (Vuill.) were first tested on different developmental stages of B. fusca including eggs, neonate, 2nd and 3rd-instar larvae. Both fungal isolates were pathogenic to all the stages tested. However, differences in mortality were observed among larvae that hatched from treated egg masses. …

Ritual Effigies And Corporeality In Kaqchikel Maya Soul Healing, Servando Z. Hinojosa Jan 2011

Ritual Effigies And Corporeality In Kaqchikel Maya Soul Healing, Servando Z. Hinojosa

Anthropology Faculty Publications

To treat some cases of soul-loss, Kaqchikel Mayas use ritual effigies of the sufferer. These effigies, called k’al k’u’x, are made by wrapping the sufferer’s clothing around a wooden armature. For the effigy to be a viable ritual surrogate, the ritualist must douse it with water, heat it, and strike it during a soul-calling ceremony. This handling instantiates corporeality in the effigy by kindling normative body states in it, states that must be stimulated in the sufferer’s own body for it to spiritually reintegrate. Such Maya ritual substitution practices are how Kaqchikels deploy ritual surrogation processes that hinge on …

The Tyrant And The Rogue: Political Implications Of Redemption In William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, Jonathan Barrett Koch Jan 2011

The Tyrant And The Rogue: Political Implications Of Redemption In William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, Jonathan Barrett Koch

Honors Theses

Starting with the negative behavior exhibited by Leontes and Autolycus, this paper traces the process of redemption through the experiences of both characters, considering material both from the play and the Stratford production. The political and civic effects of Leontes‘ tyranny will be contrasted with Autolycus‘ roguery, followed by a comparison of the various agents of redemption. These characters and the offers of redemption they make have a profound effect on their respective redemptions, but only so far as Leontes and Autolycus receive them. The paper closes with a discussion of the results of the redemptions, and the interrelated meaning …

Regulating Morality Through The Common Law And Exclusionary Zoning, George P. Smith Ii, Gregory P. Bailey Jan 2011

Regulating Morality Through The Common Law And Exclusionary Zoning, George P. Smith Ii, Gregory P. Bailey

Scholarly Articles

The extent to which a free society seeks to regulate sexual expression is problematic. What was defined as immoral or contra bonos mores in the 20th century, has become less of an issue in today’s liberal society. Freedom of sexual intimacy and expression are, to be sure, 1st Amendment and 14th Amendment rights. But, with every assertion of a fundamental right or liberty must come a concomitant understanding that there is a co-ordinate responsibility to exercise that right reasonably. Determining the reasonableness of any conduct grounded in these two amendments must be fact sensitive and guided by community standards. Broad, …

Translations, Retranslations, And Multiple Translations: A Case For Translation Variance Studies, Alexander Burak, Timothy Sergay Jan 2011

Translations, Retranslations, And Multiple Translations: A Case For Translation Variance Studies, Alexander Burak, Timothy Sergay

Russian Language Journal

The cluster of three related articles offered here represents what the authors propose to call “translation variance studies,” or TVS, a subfield of translation studies concerned with semantic, pragmatic, and stylistic equivalence and divergence between a single source text and its multiple translations into a specified target language. Multiple translations of a single source text into a single target language have become a widespread phenomenon. Its “ontological basis,” as Anna Muza recently observed, is “variability of solution within the target language.” All parties to translation must of necessity negotiate this variability of solution, beginning with the translator in the act …

Some Like It Hot – Goblin‐Style: “Ozhivliazh” In Russian Film Translations, Alexander Burak

Russian Language Journal

This article is about English‐to‐Russian voiceover translating as a translation technique and a medium that responds to and shapes sociocultural identities. It is also about a trend in Russian film translating to enliven – in various degrees – the translation text as compared with the more neutral language in the original films. And, finally, given the multiple translations of the same cultural products, films included, it is an attempt to make a case for a strand of research and translation quality analysis that that may be called “translation variance studies.”

Digital Determinism: The Cyrillic Alphabet In The Age Of New Technology, Martin Paulsen Jan 2011

Digital Determinism: The Cyrillic Alphabet In The Age Of New Technology, Martin Paulsen

Russian Language Journal

The spread of digital technology has created new conditions for the existence and development of languages. The East Slavonic languages Belarusian, Russian, and Ukrainian are excellent examples. Since the Internet originated in the U.S., and since most computer devices are created on the basis of languages that use the Latin alphabet (i.e., English), people who use other alphabets, such as Cyrillic, face additional challenges in adapting to the new technological realities (Sproat 2010).3 In this article, I shall focus on how digital technology challenges Cyrillic, as the alphabet in which the East Slavonic languages are written.

The consequences of similar …

Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy For Youth In A Digital Age, Mary Graw Leary Jan 2011

Reasonable Expectations Of Privacy For Youth In A Digital Age, Mary Graw Leary

Scholarly Articles

In this digital age, individuals and society as a whole struggle to balance the advantages of digital connectivity against the reality that this very connectivity inevitably gives others access, licitly or illicitly, to private information. Youth, in particular, bring a new dimension to this issue with their concept of privacy. While risks to privacy are certainly not limited to youth, an argument can be made that conceptualizations of privacy for those who have grown up with this technology are unique. One could further argue that as a group, youth possibly demonstrate distinct expectations of privacy when compared with older generations. …

Winning The Game Of Appellate Musical Shoes: When The Appeals Band Plays, Jump From The Client’S To The Judge’S Shoes To Write The Statement Of Facts Ballad, Laurie A. Lewis Jan 2011

Winning The Game Of Appellate Musical Shoes: When The Appeals Band Plays, Jump From The Client’S To The Judge’S Shoes To Write The Statement Of Facts Ballad, Laurie A. Lewis

Scholarly Articles

An appellate brief's Statement of Facts is critical to a successful appeal. The client trusts the attorney with his or her story. To fully hear it, the attorney must actively listen and demonstrate empathy in the initial interview. The attorney needs to step into the client's shoes to retell the story at trial. On appeal, however, the attorney needs to step into the appellate judge's shoes. The story must be recast for an audience knowing nothing about the client. It must be interesting, and appeal to the judge's spirit of justice. If the client suffered an injustice in the court …

Consumer Behavior In Social Mediums: A Study Of The Impact Of Social Networking Sites And Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games On College Students' Academic And Social Lives, Laura Johnston

Honors Theses

Consumer Behavior is an interdisciplinary field that marketers use to understand the wants and behavior of consumers. It focuses on how people decide to spend their available resources, such as time or money, on a product or service and examines issues such as why, how often, and the impact of making such a decision. This study will incorporate the Social Cognitive Theory's assessment of expected outcomes based on consumers' own direct experiences that incite continued participation with the Use and Gratification Theory's idea of social need that may result in need gratification, leading to unintended results. Users of SNSs and …

The Role Of Ci(-) Channel-Inhibition In The Brain On The Phonotactic Selectivity Of Female Crickets, Brent H. Sherwin Jan 2011

The Role Of Ci(-) Channel-Inhibition In The Brain On The Phonotactic Selectivity Of Female Crickets, Brent H. Sherwin

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to determine if picrotoxin influences phonotactic selectivity of female crickets when nanoinjected into the supraesophageal ganglion. Adult females of Acheta domesticus were pre-tested for phonotaxis on a treadmill to a range of calling songs with different syllable periods. Following dissection to expose the brain, 9.2 nL of either saline (control group) or 10-5 M picrotoxin (experimental group) was nanoinjected into the supraesophageal ganglion. Post-tests following saline injection (10 min later) were similar to the pre-tests. Picrotoxin-treated females became more phonotactically selective displaying a preference for calling songs with the shorter syllable periods.

The Important Role And Benefits Of Academic Research In Musical Interpretation: An Application To The Performance Study Of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Denny Hong Jan 2011

The Important Role And Benefits Of Academic Research In Musical Interpretation: An Application To The Performance Study Of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures At An Exhibition, Denny Hong

Honors Theses

The ultimate duty of a performing musician is to share a transcendental experience of aural artwork with society. Before doing so, the musician is obligated to conduct thorough research on the cultural, historical, and artistic components of the repertoire in order to create a holistic picture that can then be used to shape a convincing and thoughtful interpretation. My study explores and analyzes the creative tools and analytical methods involved in musical interpretation as applied to my own personal interpretation of Modest Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition through public performance. My goal is to validate the multifaceted benefits that research …

An Examination Of Parent-Child Relationships And Teen Substance Use, Brianna Johnson Jan 2011

An Examination Of Parent-Child Relationships And Teen Substance Use, Brianna Johnson

Honors Theses

What is the relationship between parent-child relationships and teen substance use? Our relationship with our parents can impact our lives for the better or the worse. To study this we analyzed a survey done by the Community that Cares. Alcohol use, marijuana use and tobacco use were determined by the respondent's self-reported substance use within the last within their lifetime on a 7 point Likert scale that ranges from 0 times to 40 times. Parental Relationships was measured by the respondents' feelings about how close they felt to their parents on a 4 point Likert scale ranging from no to …

An Investigation Of The Body As Location In The Context Of Kristeva's Reading Of The Maternal Orientation Of The Abject, Pauline Keena Jan 2011

An Investigation Of The Body As Location In The Context Of Kristeva's Reading Of The Maternal Orientation Of The Abject, Pauline Keena

Masters

The aim of my research project is the generation and enhanced understanding of what is unspeakable, unrepresented, and beyond the resolve of logical thought in my art practice. I wanted to find a way to display the emerging evidence of what is there in the physical material manifestation and beyond. So I set up a studio based research context to begin an enquiry by engaging philosophic ideas in a set of physical relations through materials and making in the studio. Using the theoretical work of Kristeva, Lacan and Schon enabled me to structure and language the enquiry. Mapping philosophic ideas …

Resurrecting The Bogeyman: The Curious Forms Of The Substantial Burden Test In Rluipa, Adam J. Macleod Jan 2011

Resurrecting The Bogeyman: The Curious Forms Of The Substantial Burden Test In Rluipa, Adam J. Macleod

Scholarly Articles

In 2000 Congress revived strict scrutiny review of regulations that substantially burden religious land use when it enacted the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act (RLUIPA). Many worry that RLUIPA creates a blanket exemption for religious institutions from neutral laws of general application, and that it threatens principles of federalism. A decade of experience with RLUIPA shows that these fears are unfounded. Indeed, the United States Courts of Appeals have gone out of their way to constrain the reach of RLUIPA's substantial burden provision. They have imposed upon the provision some creative interpretations, many of which are inconsistent with …

The Effect Of Curricular Sequencing Of Human Patient Simulation Learning Experiences On Students’ Self-Perceptions Of Clinical Reasoning Abilities, Rebecca Jensen Phd, Rn Jan 2011

The Effect Of Curricular Sequencing Of Human Patient Simulation Learning Experiences On Students’ Self-Perceptions Of Clinical Reasoning Abilities, Rebecca Jensen Phd, Rn

Nursing Publications, Posters, & Presentations

It is unknown whether timing of human patient simulation (HPS) in a semester, demographic (age, gender, and ethnicity), and situational (type of program and previous baccalaureate degree and experience in healthcare) variables affects students‘ perceptions of their clinical reasoning abilities. Nursing students were divided into two groups, mid and end of semester HPS experiences. Students‘ perceptions of clinical reasoning abilities were measured at Baseline (beginning of semester) and Time 2 (end of semester), along with demographic and situational variables. Dependent variable was Difference scores where Baseline scores were subtracted from Time 2 scores to reveal changes in students‘ perceptions of …
