Third Age Adult English Language Learners In Informal Library Settings, Mary Anne Cassell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There is little research-based and theoretical literature about adult education or English literacy classes in nonformal settings such as library literacy programs in the community (Mathews-Aydinli, 2008; McCook & Barber, 2002b). The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore the motivation, learning supports, learning barriers, and program change recommendations of Third Age Learners in a nonformal library ESOL setting. This study provides insight into the demographic variable of linguistically-isolated Third Age English Language Learners (ELLs) participating in a library conversationally-based ESOL program. The results can guide libraries offering services, as well as those considering offering services to these …

Transcending Political Party Constraints, Cara. Poplak Jan 2011

Transcending Political Party Constraints, Cara. Poplak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis analyzes how the American political system presents specific rhetorical constraints for independent and third party candidates who are "othered" by the system. To better understand how independent candidates overcome these constraints, the rhetoric of two such recent candidates, Charlie Crist and Joe Lieberman, is analyzed using ideographic criticism. These two candidates were originally affiliated with one of the two major political parties, but changed their party affiliation to run as Independent candidates. To facilitate their transition to independent candidates, both politicians used popular American political ideographs such as "the people," "freedom," and "unity" to maintain their allegiance to …

Uncovering The Role Of The Rodent Dorsal Hippocampus In Spatial And Object Memory Retrieval, Lisa Rios

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Male C7BL/6J mice were implanted with bilateral dorsal CA1 guide cannulae. After confirming that intrahippocampal microinfusion of muscimol impaired hippocampal function, demonstrated by impaired performance in the Morris water maze, the influence of intrahippocampal muscimol was tested in the Novel Object Recognition paradigm. During a test session 24 h after the last habituation/sample session, mice were presented with one familiar object and one novel object. Successful retention of object memory was inferred if mice spent more time exploring the novel object than the familiar object. Results demonstrate that muscimol infused into dorsal CA1 region prior to the test session eliminates …

This thesis consists of the development of a web based wireless sensor network (WSN) monitoring system using smartphones. Typical WSNs consist of networks of wireless sensor nodes dispersed over predetermined areas to acquire, process, and transmit data from these locations. Often it is the case that the WSNs are located in areas too hazardous or inaccessible to humans. We focused on the need for access to this sensed data remotely and present our reference architecture to solve this problem. We developed this architecture for web-based wireless sensor network monitoring and have implemented a prototype that uses Crossbow Mica sensors and …

Administrative Change, Randy J. Kozel, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Jan 2011

Administrative Change, Randy J. Kozel, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Journal Articles

Determining the standard of review for administrative actions has commanded judicial and scholarly interest like few other topics. Notwithstanding the extensive debates, far less consideration has been given to the unique features of agencies’ deviations from their own precedents. In this article we examine this puzzle of administrative change. By change, we mean a reversal of the agency’s former views about the best way to implement and interpret its regulatory mandate. We trace the lineage of administrative change at the Supreme Court and analyze features that distinguish agency reversals from other administrative actions. In particular, we contend that because administrative …

A Functional Approach To Memory-Safe Operating Systems, Rebekah Leslie Jan 2011

A Functional Approach To Memory-Safe Operating Systems, Rebekah Leslie

Dissertations and Theses

Purely functional languages--with static type systems and dynamic memory management using garbage collection--are a known tool for helping programmers to reduce the number of memory errors in programs. By using such languages, we can establish correctness properties relating to memory-safety through our choice of implementation language alone. Unfortunately, the language characteristics that make purely functional languages safe also make them more difficult to apply in a low-level domain like operating systems construction. The low-level features that support the kinds of hardware manipulations required by operating systems are not typically available in memory-safe languages with garbage collection. Those that are provided …

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov Jan 2011

Scalable Cooperative Caching Algorithm Based On Bloom Filters, Nodirjon Siddikov

Theses

This thesis presents the design, implementation and evaluation of a novel cooperative caching algorithm based on the bloom filter data structure. The new algorithm uses a decentralized approach to resolve the problems that prevent the existing solutions from being scalable. The problems consist of an overloaded manager, a communication overhead among clients, and a memory overhead on the global cache. The new solution reduces the manager load and the communication overhead by distributing the global cache information among cooperating clients. Thus, the manager no longer maintains the global cache. Furthermore, the memory overhead is decreased due to a bloom filter …

Versatile Fpga Architecture For Skein Hashing Algorithm, David Webster Jan 2011

Versatile Fpga Architecture For Skein Hashing Algorithm, David Webster

Theses

Digital communications and data storage are expanding at fast rates, increasing the need for advanced cryptographic standards to validate and provide privacy for that data. One of the basic components commonly used in information security systems is cryptographic hashing. Cryptographic hashing involves the compression of an arbitrary block of data into a fixed-size string of bits known as the hash value. These functions are designed such that it is computationally infeasible to determine a message that results in a given hash value. It should also be infeasible to find two messages with the same hash value and to change a …

Lasing Behavior Of An Active Nim-Pim Directional Coupler, Riffat Ara Jan 2011

Lasing Behavior Of An Active Nim-Pim Directional Coupler, Riffat Ara

Theses

Negative index materials are a subclass of metamaterials which are materials having properties that are not found in nature. Present day research regarding metamaterials indicates that they possess remarkable behavior. This thesis is focused on a metamaterial-based photonic directional coupler employing a negative index material (NIM) in one of its waveguides while the other waveguide consists of a positive index material (PIM). A NIM-PIM directional coupler (DC) exhibits optical feedback even without any actual traditional resonator structure. This feedback exists because of the NIM employed in one of the structure's waveguides. The ability of a NIM-PIM DC to propagate light …

An Analysis Of Flow-Based Routing, Jennifer Casella Jan 2011

An Analysis Of Flow-Based Routing, Jennifer Casella

Theses

Since their development in the early 1970's, the underlying function of IP routers has not changed - they still support a best effort delivery method in order to pass frames from source to destination. With the advent of newer, bandwidth intensive Internet-based services and applications, such as video conferencing and telemedicine, many individuals wonder if the current approach to routing is the most practical. "The Internet needs to provide quality of service ("QoS") as predictably as conventional circuit switching networks. Although some QoS capabilities in an isolated environment have been demonstrated, providing end-to-end QoS at a large scale across the …

Miniature Embedded Module For Prognostic Health Monitoring (Phm) Of Electronic Systems, Liam Moore

Theses

Sensing systems for reliability prognostics are used extensively in life- and mission- critical electronics systems. They allow monitoring of reliability stresses in real time and scheduling of preventative maintenance before system failure. However, reliability prognostics systems are, in general, large and expensive and cannot be used in lower cost, small sized or portable products.

This thesis presents a sensing module for reliability prognostics which is only 1cm in volume and uses only commercial off-the-shelf components. In its 1cm package, the module combines all the necessary elements to act as an embedded prognostic sensor system for multi axial strain, vibration, humidity …

The Place Of Arts And Culture Sponsorships Within The Theory And Practice Of Public Relations, Brenda Carney Jan 2011

The Place Of Arts And Culture Sponsorships Within The Theory And Practice Of Public Relations, Brenda Carney

Theses

This study is concerned with the role and position of sponsorship, specifically sponsorship of the arts, in public relations. It aims to add to the, as yet considerably sparse, body of knowledge that exists on arts sponsorships from the perspective of the public relations practitioner.

The literature reveals that while sponsorship is used as a vehicle for public relations. it is often activated as part of an integrated marketing and public relations communications campaign. It also highlights the importance of planned communication based on organisational objectives and the different approaches to public relations including relational theory and rhetorical theory. Both …

Internet Usage Data, Adam Knowlton Jan 2011

Internet Usage Data, Adam Knowlton

Department of Communication Studies: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Interest in quantifying the the amount of traffic directed to specific websites grew soon after the rise of the internet in the early-to-mid 1990s. Drawing from scholarly metrics such as citation analysis, Larry Page and Sergey Brin developed a ranking system for the internet that would apply numerical value to a website based on the number of hyperlinks contained within, and linked to, that same website. This measurement tool opened the door for academic scholars to learn more about how their work circulates online. However, personal websites are not the only way that scholars have been able to make public …

Seasonal adjustments to muscle size in migratory birds may result from preparatory physiological changes or responses to changed workloads. The mechanisms controlling these changes in size are poorly understood. We investigated some potential mediators of flight muscle size (myostatin and insulin-like growth factor, IGF1) in pectoralis muscles of wild wintering or migrating white-throated sparrows (Zonotrichia albicollis), captive white-throated sparrows that were photoperiod manipulated to be in a `wintering' or `migratory' (Zugunruhe) state, and captive European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) that were either exercised for 2 weeks in a wind tunnel or untrained. Flight muscle size increased in …

Corporations And Human Rights Law: The Emerging Consensus And Its Effects On Women's Employment Rights, Tiana O'Konek Jan 2011

Corporations And Human Rights Law: The Emerging Consensus And Its Effects On Women's Employment Rights, Tiana O'Konek

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article argues that the current international human rights framework fails to adequately address corporate human rights abuses, particularly affecting women in the garment industry. This governance gap stems from the statist nature of international law, which overlooks non-state actors like corporations. Women in the garment industry, often confined to informal and precarious work, face systemic discrimination and exclusion from core labor protections, highlighting the need for a more inclusive and enforceable framework.

Judge Harold Baer's Quixotic Crusade For Class Counsel Diversity, Michael H. Hurwitz Jan 2011

Judge Harold Baer's Quixotic Crusade For Class Counsel Diversity, Michael H. Hurwitz

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

The article examines Judge Harold Baer's efforts to promote diversity among class counsel by requiring the inclusion of at least one minority and one female lawyer in class action cases. While Baer's intent to enhance diversity is commendable, the article argues that this requirement is not supported by the legal framework of Rule 23(g) of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, which governs the appointment of class counsel. The article contends that Baer's actions exceed his judicial authority and conflate his personal socio-political agenda with the legal requirements for class counsel appointment.
