A Hedonic Analysis Of The Effect Of Expert Wine Ratings On Price And Retailer Profits, Kaitlin D. Neill Dec 2011

A Hedonic Analysis Of The Effect Of Expert Wine Ratings On Price And Retailer Profits, Kaitlin D. Neill

HIM 1990-2015

During the last few decades, economists have become interested in the wine industry and several of them have focused on the determinants of price. One characteristic that has been identified as an important determinant is expert wine ratings. Much of the previous research on this topic has focused on relating expert grades to the retail price of wine. Using proprietary data, this paper will test whether these grades influence retail prices as well as retailer profits and wholesale pricing. By analyzing an individual wholesale firm in South Florida and their distribution network, this paper determines the effect expert ratings have …

Art Teacher Preparation Does The Path To Certification In Florida Matter?, Deanna Jean Price

HIM 1990-2015

For years now, students have been learning from two different types of teachers: Teachers who received certification from a traditional training program at a university and teachers who became certified through alternative certification routes. Does the educational preparation of an art teacher matter? Is alternative certification as effectual as traditional teacher preparation programs? Darling- Hammond (2006) says, "Evidence indicates that teachers who have had more preparation for teaching are more confident and successful with students than those who have had little or none." This thesis will examine and analyze alternative teacher certification in art education for the state of Florida, …

Treatment Of Opiate Abuse: Increasing Patient Self-Efficacy And Engagement In Treatment Through Education Of Providers, Kimberly Wight

Theses and Dissertations

Opiate abuse is one of the fastest growing public health concerns in the United States and has far reaching ramifications that effect individual patients and their families, communities, and the healthcare system (U.S. Department of Justice National Drug Intelligence Center, 2010). It has been shown that there is significant gap in knowledge among healthcare providers surrounding the topic of opiate abuse and dependence as well as the available pharmacologic treatments that are available to help relieve withdrawal as well as help maintain heal truer lifestyles. In addition to this lack in knowledge there appears to be a gap in recognizing …

Local Television Coverage Of A Mall Shooting: Separating Facts From Fiction In Breaking News, Jeremy Harris Lipschultz, Michael L. Hilt

Communication Faculty Publications

Local TV news emphasizes the earliest stage of crimes because ‘‘breaking news’’ is fresh, dramatic and visual. A qualitative analysis was conducted using a comprehensive set of recordings of the first three-and-a-half hours of local television news coverage in Omaha, Nebraska. This study identified a series of ongoing issues that have important implications for newsroom decision-makers. Local television news used charged and dramatic language, such as that shooting victims were ‘‘fighting for their lives.’’ Reporters and news managers find themselves in the middle of a struggle between two options: remaining a distant and objective observer of events, or connecting with …

Mechanical Engineering

Childhood obesity is becoming a growing problem in the United States. According to the CDC, childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years [7]. It can lead to health problems previously reserved for adults, such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. For the team WiiHopp project, we plan to turn a JumpSport mini-trampoline into a controller for the Nintendo Wii console. The hope is to help turn the problem of video games and the laziness surrounding them into an active solution to combat the problem of childhood obesity.

Our goal is to produce an add-on …

Protein Trap Lines Of Drosophila To Demonstrate Spatio-Temporal Localization Of Proteins In An Undergraduate Lab, Oorvashi Roy Puli, Amit Singh

Biology Faculty Publications

The objective of this teaching note is to generate a laboratory exercise, which allows students to get a hands-on experience of a cell biology technique. The short duration of the laboratory classes is the biggest challenge with the development of a cell biology lab for an undergraduate curriculum. Therefore, it is necessary to design a laboratory exercise that enables the students to carry out cell biological assays in the desired time. This laboratory exercise focuses on tracking protein expression levels along a spatial (space) and temporal (time) axis in developing Drosophila melanogaster organ primordium. Here we use the protein trap …

Small-Scale Hybrid Alternative Energy Maximizer For Wind Turbines And Photovoltaic Panels, Ross Kerley Dec 2011

Small-Scale Hybrid Alternative Energy Maximizer For Wind Turbines And Photovoltaic Panels, Ross Kerley

HIM 1990-2015

This thesis describes the creation of a small-scale Hybrid Power System (HPS) that maximizes energy from a wind turbine and photovoltaic array. Small-scale HPS are becoming an increasingly viable energy solution as fossil fuel prices rise and more electricity is needed in remote areas. Modern HPS typically employ wind speed sensors and three power stages to extract maximum power. Modern systems also use passive rectifiers to convert AC from the wind turbine to DC that is usable by power electronics. This passive system inefficiently wastes power and introduces damaging harmonic noise to the wind turbine. The HPS described in this …

From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti Dec 2011

From Capitulations To Unequal Treaties: The Matter Of An Extraterritorial Jurisdiction In The Ottoman Empire, Eliana Augusti

Journal of Civil Law Studies

In the nineteenth century, justice in the Ottoman Empire appeared to international jurists deeply corrupted and far from the Western model. European consular jurisdictions, as in the past, solved this embarrassment in the prevalent and private interest of Western States in order to control the Mediterranean area. This perpetrated abjuration to recognize an autonomous and sovereign Ottoman administration of justice in civil or criminal cases in which foreigners were involved continued, in spite of the fact that the Porte provided excellent examples of intersection, reception and appropriation of foreign models to construct a new legal system, and to transform society. …

The Mediterranean Legacy In The Concept Of Sovereignty: A Case Of Legal And Philosophical Hybridity, Alessio Lo Giudice Dec 2011

The Mediterranean Legacy In The Concept Of Sovereignty: A Case Of Legal And Philosophical Hybridity, Alessio Lo Giudice

Journal of Civil Law Studies

The ideas of centralized political power and monarchy that emerged from the Mediterranean world are among the most important philosophical bases for the concept of sovereignty. My thesis is that the normative idea of an absolute, independent, and exclusive center of power originates in a complex case of philosophical hybridity. It is the outcome of the alternation between the conception of the Sovereign as representing the supreme power (the indirect theory) and the conception of the Sovereign as directly containing that power (the direct theory). The former conception is usually associated with the history of Western political culture and the …

Journal of Medical Education

The use of problem-based learning (PBL) approach in education by medical schools around the world is still evolving based on local environmental factors, such as the willingness and ability of the teachers to adjust to this style of learning, and government regulations. In this article, I will present my personal views on the problems and challenges teachers/tutors may face in different components of a PBL medical education, and suggest some solutions or approaches PBL teachers may wish to consider in confronting or solving these problems. I will focus on lectures, tutorial process, teaching of clinical skills, and evaluation. In the …

Students' Perception And Acceptance Of Problem-Based Learning (Pbl) In A Hybrid Traditional-Pbl Curriculum, Si Mui Sim, Lay Hoong Lian, M. S. Kanthimathi, Meow Keong Thong, Nget Hong Tan

Journal of Medical Education

Even though there are several variants in its implementation, problem-based learning (PBL) is essentially a form of student-centred learning that involves enquiry-based discussion triggered by a problem and facilitated by a tutor in small groups. In a hybrid traditional-PBL curriculum where PBL runs parallel with conventional didactic teaching, there is always a concern that such curricular arrangement may produce undesirable learning behaviour. Therefore, this paper evaluated the students' perception and acceptance of PBL in such a learning environment. PBL was introduced in a gradual manner into the first three years of a revised undergraduate medical curriculum at the University of …
