Scripture And The Church: A Precis For An Alternative Analogy, Daniel Castelo Jan 2011

Scripture And The Church: A Precis For An Alternative Analogy, Daniel Castelo

SPU Works

This article surveys the popular analogy of thinking of Scripture as “incarnational,” that it is both “human” and “divine,” and shows how an alternative model, one framed in terms of the church’s traditional marks of oneness, holiness, catholicity, and apostolicity, can be more theologically coherent in terms of Scripture’s nature or ontology. Furthermore, we believe that a shift in analogies can render an approach to Scripture that is more attentive to Scripture’s role as a means of grace employed by the triune God to bring about repair and healing among its faithful and God-seeking readers.

John Edwards (1637-1716) On The Freedom Of The Will: The Debate On The Relation Between Divine Necessity And Human Freedom In Late Seventeenth Century And Early Eighteenth Century England., Jeongmo Yoo

CTS PhD Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation examines John Edwards’ (1637-1716) doctrine of free choice, focusing on his understanding of the relation between divine necessity and human freedom as an illustration of the way Reformed theologians of the late seventeenth and the early eighteenth century developed their ideas of human free choice. Even though free choice is an important theme in the history of Reformed theology, Reformed teaching on free choice has gained much less attention by modern scholars than other Reformed themes such as faith, grace and predestination. Moreover, the traditional Reformed doctrine of free choice has been frequently criticized as metaphysical or philosophical …

As Good As It Gets: A Review And Consideration Of "Healing Prayer", Its Theological And Ministry Implications, And The Hope For Change It Evokes., Henry Kranenburg Jan 2011

As Good As It Gets: A Review And Consideration Of "Healing Prayer", Its Theological And Ministry Implications, And The Hope For Change It Evokes., Henry Kranenburg

CTS Master of Theology (ThM) Theses

If healing is possible, and Christian prayer is a means to achieve it, how do Christians 'make it happen'? The answer to this question has had renewed and increasing interest for Christians in Reformed circles (Chapter I). While different healing 'ministries' have claimed to unlock (some aspect) of healing, there has been limited assessment of these ministries in both their methodologies and their claims. This paper reviews four of these ministries, first looking at aspects of their teaching and methodology (Chapter 2). It then reflects on these from a behavioural-psychological perspective by asking a number of questions (Chapter 3) before …

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone Jan 2011

Inhabiting The Garden: Bible, Theology And Mission, Lawson G. Stone

The Asbury Journal

This essay explores the role of biblical exegesis in the task of Christian theology and in the contemporary global mission of the church from the perspective of an Old Testament scholar. It poses the question what a biblical exegesis would look like that was consistently Christian in its assumptions while, at the same time, honest and competent in dealing with the phenomena of the biblical text. Using the exegesis of the early centuries of the church as a case study, the essay develops insights into the role of serious biblical study in empowering the early church's vibrant expansion through the …

Is Modern Legal Liberalism Still Compatible With Free Exercise Of Religion?, Donald R. Mcconnell Jan 2011

Is Modern Legal Liberalism Still Compatible With Free Exercise Of Religion?, Donald R. Mcconnell

Campbell Law Review

Classic liberal legal thought has clearly been shaped by the influence of Christianity. But in recent years, the movement, like ancient Gnosticism, has some Christian elements, but has become a decidedly anti-Christian force in the courts. This comparison tracks well with the analysis of other parallel modern intellectual movements by the political scientist Eric Voegelin. It is also supported by current events such as the recent Federal District Court opinion by Chief Judge Vaughn Walker in Perry v. Schwartzenegger. Liberalism has transformed from an attempt at neutrality, to an established religion that not only promotes its own perverse version of …

Scholarship In The Gfu School Of Education: High Expectations And High Commitment, Ken Badley, Marc Shelton

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Christian scholarship is more than this, but it is also mainly an opportunity to tell our stories to peers in our respective content disciplines - and in telling our stories, we are in fact telling God's story of partnering with us in his work. We fully intend this White Paper to be used as a resource within the School of Education and as a way of informing groups outside of the SoE about our work as scholarship, or in another way of saying it, about our work as learners - with both humility and service.

Part One: Introduction & Methodology …

The "Ladder" Of The Lord's Plagues, Kasey Devine Jan 2011

The "Ladder" Of The Lord's Plagues, Kasey Devine

School of Theology and Seminary Graduate Papers/Theses

This paper discusses the first chapters of the book of Exodus, in which God identifies himself to Moses and announces God’s intentions to “smiteEgyptby doing all kinds of wondrous deeds there.” With each sign, another aspect of God’s control and supremacy is showcased – and each is more powerful than the last. In this way, God’s signs become much like climbing the rungs of a ladder – the further along you get, the more dangerous your position becomes. The text is approached as a narrative drama, with the final form taking precedence over source or historical criticism. Details point to …

A Diachronic Analysis Of The Use Of Scripture In The Variant Versions Of The Apocryphon Of John, David Creech Jan 2011

A Diachronic Analysis Of The Use Of Scripture In The Variant Versions Of The Apocryphon Of John, David Creech

Dissertations

This dissertation explores at length the Apocryphon of John's ambivalent treatment of the Jewish and Christian scriptures. Although Moses is explicitly corrected at five points in the text--four times mentioned by name (NHC II 13,18-21; 22,22-25; 23,3-4; and 29,6-10) and one time by inference (NHC II 21,9-14)--the Genesis account of creation is nonetheless the basis for the Apocryphon's cosmogony and anthropogony. It is argued that the Apocryphon's uneven treatment of the Bible is the result of a development of the text in the midst of a dispute with other early catholics.

Green Eggs And Shawarma: Reinterpreting The Bible, Reforming Mission, With Leviticus' "Non-Indigenous Resident" As A Test Case, Mark A. Awabdy Jan 2011

Green Eggs And Shawarma: Reinterpreting The Bible, Reforming Mission, With Leviticus' "Non-Indigenous Resident" As A Test Case, Mark A. Awabdy

The Asbury Journal

This article encourages Christians to revisit and reinterpret the Bible in order to more faithfully align with God's mission in the world. As a test case, the article reinterprets the socio-religious status of the "non-indigenous resident" in Leviticus and concludes with some possibilities for reforming mission theology and praxis. The first section of the article reviews the conventional interpretation of Leviticus' as one granted absolute religious freedom. Against this view, the body of the article contends that the in Leviticus was bound in covenant to Yahweh, yet free to practice some foreign customs and practices. To argue for this, the …

Helping The Parents Of Middle School Students Communicate Biblical Truths Of Sexuality At The First Baptist Church Of Lenoir, North Carolina, Thomas Russell Hinton Jan 2011

Helping The Parents Of Middle School Students Communicate Biblical Truths Of Sexuality At The First Baptist Church Of Lenoir, North Carolina, Thomas Russell Hinton

Doctor of Ministry Projects

An educational program was developed to discover the role of the church in promoting healthy parent/child communication about sexuality. Believing scripture affirms sexuality as a blessing from God, parents and middle school youth were recruited and led through the study. Surveys measured attitudes, opinions, and understanding of biblical knowledge, anatomy, and communication levels. After the program the families were given two months to observe parent/child communication. Final surveys indicated that the church can play an active role in promoting parent child communication about sexuality, and participants reflected a positive outcome by recommending the continuation of this program as a part …

Book Review: The God Who Is Triune: Revisioning The Christian Doctrine Of God (Allan Coppedge), Glenn J. Morrison

Theology Papers and Journal Articles

There are a multitude of approaches to Trinitarian Theology. In the Catholic theological tradition, the Bible is the soul of theology, and philosophy, spirituality and ecclesiology form essential foundations. In contrast, the evangelical tradition holds the Bible as both the soul and foundation of the theological imagination. Following in this latter tradition, Coppedge’s book on the Trinity provides a new and systematic approach to developing a biblical theology of the Trinity. The approach is new because of its systematic and comprehensive method of drawing out, integrating and developing Old Testament and New Testament data: images, indicators, analogies, attributes, aspects, differences, …

Mission-Directed Governance: Leading The Christian School With Vision, Unity, And Accountability, Leonard Stob Jan 2011

Mission-Directed Governance: Leading The Christian School With Vision, Unity, And Accountability, Leonard Stob

Calvin Press

Christian school leaders need to reflect carefully on the leadership and governance processes that can best guide their schools. This book introduces a mission-directed governance system designed to define educational ideals, focus leadership energies, advance the school, create accountability, and measure results. While holding fast to essential positions of Christian faith and educational philosophy, these ideas can help leaders of Christian schools more effectively address purpose, priority, and organization through fresh approaches to governance.

Implementing A Training Manual For Adventist Local Church Leaders In The Gauteng Region Of South Africa, Eugene L. Fransch Jan 2011

Implementing A Training Manual For Adventist Local Church Leaders In The Gauteng Region Of South Africa, Eugene L. Fransch

Doctor of Ministry Projects

Problem

The youth department of the Southern Affican-Indian Ocean Division of the Seventh-day Adventist church (SID) has noticed a growing trend of frustration and ineffectiveness among local church youth leaders in their yearly church planning. This has lead to a high turnover rate among them due to a lack of adequate materials, poor program planning, and a clear knowledge of the department’s objectives to guide them in their planning.

Methodology

The purpose of the research was to implement a Youth Leadership Training Manual for church youth leaders that would help them overcome their current frustrations and assist them in planning …

Beyond Belief: Prayer As Communication In Religious Information Seeking, David H. Michels Jan 2011

Beyond Belief: Prayer As Communication In Religious Information Seeking, David H. Michels

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Prayer role in information seeking has been largely neglected in LIS research. I propose that respondents understood prayer as communication with God. I compared their descriptions of prayer to God with research on interpersonal communication for information seeking. Prayer, for these respondents, met both cognitive and affective information needs.

The Journey To Jesus: John 4:19-26, Andrew Hagen Jan 2011

The Journey To Jesus: John 4:19-26, Andrew Hagen

Global Tides

John 4:19-26 is a part of Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well. This portion of the conversation includes Jesus’ first revelation of himself as the Messiah and the only way to the Father in what Eric John Wyckoff calls an “astonishing self-revelation unparalleled in its explicitness.” Jesus’ later claims develop these ideas further (John 8:24, 28, 58; 13:19; 18:5) but this scene serves to not only reveal Jesus as the Messiah-Christ but also to demonstrate how Jesus transcends all the expectations which are associated with the title.

Adventures In Churchland: Discovering The Beautiful Mess Jesus Loves, Dan Kimball Jan 2011

Adventures In Churchland: Discovering The Beautiful Mess Jesus Loves, Dan Kimball

Doctor of Ministry

A growing number of young adults (those in the 18-30-year-old age range) are not
engaging, becoming involved or entering into the church of America. An increasing
number of those who grew up attending church are leaving after their high school years.
I have observed this as a pattern when visiting churches and talking to church
leaders across America. Statistics are showing this as seen in studies such as Dave Kin-
naman’s research and writings from the Barna Research group and Ed Stetzer’s research
from LifeWay Christian Resources. This is a very significant problem because if the
church loses connection with …
