Renaming Abraham's Children: Election, Ethnicity And The Interpretation Of Scripture In Romans 9, Robert Bruce Foster Oct 2011

Renaming Abraham's Children: Election, Ethnicity And The Interpretation Of Scripture In Romans 9, Robert Bruce Foster

Dissertations (1934 -)

In this study, I attempt to reconstruct Paul's pre-epistolary exegesis of Genesis that I hypothesize lies beneath Rom 9. This exegesis goes beyond the discussion of the patriarchs in Rom 9:6-13 and supports the reconfiguration of God's family in Rom 9:24-29. It enables Paul to view Israel as simultaneously chosen and rejected by God.

Adopting a method from Carol Stockhausen, I offer several criteria to establish this project's legitimacy. The Pauline exegesis that I propose is plausible to the extent that (1) it is rooted in his text; (2) it is historically credible; (3) it illuminates the argument in Rom …

Ethics And The 'Seasons Of My Life' As A Dental Educator, David A. Nash

Oral Health Science Faculty Publications

Perhaps the first comprehensive ethics program in American dental schools was created in 1990 at the University of Kentucky by then dean David Nash. Nash recounts the emergence of his personal and professional interest in ethics using the structure of Daniel Levinson's book The Seasons of a Man's Life. Each season brings tasks of evolving and deepening ethical engagement. Being ethical is important; helping others to be so is special. Nash still teaches the course.

Aaron And The Golden Calf In The Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts Oct 2011

Aaron And The Golden Calf In The Rhetoric Of The Pentateuch, James W. Watts

Religion - All Scholarship

In the Pentateuch, the contrast between law and narrative, or more precisely, ritual instructions and ritual narrative, is nowhere more stark than in the relationship between the Golden Calf story (Exod 32-34) and the instructions for building the Tabernacle (Exod 25-31, 35-40). The former vilifies Aaron by placing him at the center of the idolatrous event while the latter celebrates Aaron and his sons as divinely consecrated priests. Though source criticism has long since distinguished the authors of these accounts, it does not explain the intentions behind a literary juxtaposition that is too stark to be anything but intentional. Nor …

Job Of Suburbia? A Serious Man And Viewer Perceptions Of The Biblical, David Tollerton Oct 2011

Job Of Suburbia? A Serious Man And Viewer Perceptions Of The Biblical, David Tollerton

Journal of Religion & Film

In the short period since its release in 2009, the notion that A Serious Man represents a retelling of the Book of Job has gained great currency. This is the case despite the film’s makers, Joel and Ethan Coen, denying that the biblical tale was their inspiration. This article considers the relationship between Job and A Serious Man and the motivations that may lie behind the assertion of parallels between the two. It is ultimately suggested that the relationship between film and text is more substantial if we look beyond the partial plot similarities to the theme of theological absurdity …

An Examination Of Key Foundational Elements For Pastoral Identity As Found In The Life And Writings Of The Apostle Paul, Carl Jason Taylor Oct 2011

An Examination Of Key Foundational Elements For Pastoral Identity As Found In The Life And Writings Of The Apostle Paul, Carl Jason Taylor

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The challenges of pastoral ministry can be seen since New Testament times. Studies reveal that an alarming number of pastors leave the ministry each year. Those that remain in ministry often see their families in turmoil as a result of the hardships of ministry. The Apostle Paul's ministry challenges are detailed and described for today's pastor through the New Testament. Today's pastor can learn a great deal from Paul's example in regard to how to finish the race of ministry. Through an examination of Paul's writings, writings about Paul in the book of Acts, surveys with pastors, and a review …

Eternal Security: The What If's And The Word Of God, Jason Rutherford Sep 2011

Eternal Security: The What If's And The Word Of God, Jason Rutherford

Theses and Dissertations

Eternal security is the doctrine that teaches that a redeemed individual will remain in a redeemed state, regardless of his or her action following conversion. God is the author and finisher of salvation, never a work of the individual human, either before or after belief. This doctrine rests upon both explicit teaching in the Scripture and in a clear understanding of what actually occurs in salvation. This thesis also contains an afterword that examines the effect of postmodernism on Biblical communication in the 21st century.

The Biblical Use Of Rewards As A Motivation For Christian Service, Bill Fredric Korver Sep 2011

The Biblical Use Of Rewards As A Motivation For Christian Service, Bill Fredric Korver

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

A review of current cultural trends and Christian literature reveals very little writing and preaching about a motivation for personal obedience in general and vocational ministry in particular. The purpose of this project will be to demonstrate how one's motivation for service to Christ will be greatly enhanced when considering the possibility of gaining, or losing, rewards from Jesus Christ both in this life and more specifically at the future judgment seat of Christ. It will be the intent of this project to demonstrate conclusively that not only is this a scripturally sound motivation, but also that it is a …

"There Is A Threeness About You": Trinitarian Images Of God, Self, And Community Among Medieval Women Visionaries, Donna E. Ray Aug 2011

"There Is A Threeness About You": Trinitarian Images Of God, Self, And Community Among Medieval Women Visionaries, Donna E. Ray

History ETDs

Despite the ineffability of the Holy Trinity, not to mention its logical impossibility—that the three persons of the Godhead are also one—many medieval thinkers tried hard to capture its essence and importance. Among the richest and most original medieval images of the Trinity were those produced by women visionaries. This is a comparative study of seven of these women—Hildegard of Bingen, Mechthild of Hackeborn, Gertrude of Helfta, Mechthild of Magdeburg, Hadewijch of Brabant, Julian of Norwich, and Christine de Pizan—and their visionary experiences, related through both word and image, of the Holy Trinity. While they were careful to claim doctrinal …

Does A Second Century Rabbi’S Teaching Methods And Process Elements Align With Malcolm Knowles’ Andragogical Framework?, Luke Brad Bobo Aug 2011

Does A Second Century Rabbi’S Teaching Methods And Process Elements Align With Malcolm Knowles’ Andragogical Framework?, Luke Brad Bobo

Dissertations

Rabbi Akiva, a second century rabbi, used teaching methods and process elements that exercised his students’ mental and auditory faculties and their imaginations and bodies. This research study offers assistance to practitioners in the field of adult education as the aim of this work is to discover if alignment exist between Rabbi Akiva’s teaching methods and process elements and Knowles’ teaching methods and process elements. The late Malcolm Knowles is known as the father of American andragogy (Cooke, 1994; Henschke, 1998). And like Rabbi Akiva, Dr. Knowles was an adult educator. Both men used teaching methods and processes. For Knowles, …

Using Graphic Organizers With Scriptural Text: Ninth-Grade Latter-Day Saint (Lds) Students’ Comprehension Of Doctrinal Readings And Concepts, Mark D. Potter

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

This study investigated the effect of instruction that included graphic organizers on LDS seminary students’ ability to understand scriptural text and their ability to identify doctrines in scriptural text, utilizing a repeated measures, quasi-experimental design involving 209 ninth-grade student participants. The participants were randomly assigned by class to one of two treatment groups. Participants in the treatment group received instruction using graphic organizers with the standard curriculum and participants in the comparison group received instruction using only the standard curriculum. Three different measures were employed to measure the effectiveness of the graphic organizers intervention: (a) a multiple-choice test of LDS …

Eenie, Meenie, Miney, Moe: Can It Work For Bibles?, Mark A. Throntveit

How does one choose among the vast number of English translations of the Bible now available? Most important, of course, is to read any translation; but then it is important to know what kind of translation it aims to be, whether it is appropriate for the intended use, and what its biases are. Comparing several translations will bring even more insight.
