Witness And Testimonies: A Diachronic Perspective On The History Of The Bosnian Muslims, Rusmir Mahmutćehajić Oct 2011

Witness And Testimonies: A Diachronic Perspective On The History Of The Bosnian Muslims, Rusmir Mahmutćehajić

International Dialogue

In his essay, “Witness and Testimonies: A Diachronic Perspective on the History of the Bosnian Muslims,” Rusmir Mahmutćehajić explores and deconstructs ideological abuses of some of the most important terms in the Muslim intellectual tradition. The terms ‘witness’ and ‘witnessing’, ‘opener’ and ‘opening’ are of key significance for understanding and reasoning for Muslim sacred tradition. Distorted, narrowed and reductive forms of these terms have been taken by antimuslim ideologists as material within their own constructions. In deconstructing the ideological abuse of these terms, Mahmutćehajić applies new knowledge from his experience in Scriptural Reasoning. Terms from the cultural history of Bosnia …

The Recurring Great Lakes Crisis: Identity, Violence And Power - Jean-Pierre Chretién And Richard Banégas (Eds), Catherine Bolten

International Dialogue

The Recurring Great Lakes Crisis is an edited volume comprising individual case studies that examine aspects of historical and on-going violence in Rwanda, Burundi, Uganda, and Congo-Kinshasa. The purpose of the volume is to “lead to a better understanding of the changes in the perceptions of violence which constitute one of the most serious obstacles to lasting peace” (1). The case studies encompass a diverse array of aspects of each of the conflicts, from the role of the Catholic Church in Rwanda since 1957, to the political and social problems created by the label “disaster victims” in Burundi after the …

Archaeologists As Activists - M. Jay Stottman, Curtis Hutt

International Dialogue

Archaeologists as Activists: Can Archaeologists Change the World? is comprised of papers edited by M. Jay Stottman—many of which were initially prepared for a session at the 2004 annual meeting of the Society for Historical Archaeology in St. Louis. The focus of this volume is “activist archaeology” as theorized and performed by archaeologists working in the last few decades in the United States. While the specific topics addressed are quite local, the questions raised and practices deployed are highly significant for archaeologists, anthropologists, and historians engaged in international settings. First, I must make a few disclaimers. This reviewer is neither …

A Balanced Approach To Health: Understanding The Health Care Practices Of Guatemalan Maya In The United States, Amanda L. Mcgrew Oct 2011

A Balanced Approach To Health: Understanding The Health Care Practices Of Guatemalan Maya In The United States, Amanda L. Mcgrew

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

The Maya worldview is constructed on the concept of balance. Their traditional beliefs emphasize balancing the spiritual and physical forces in their lives to maintain equilibrium and thus, health. Nevertheless, outside forces have impinged heavily on this worldview, often shifting Maya views on health. Discussions with Maya partners throughout the United States revealed that though they do utilize ethnomedicine, they tend to overvalue biomedical techniques and caregivers—even if they do not seek care from them. Maya history, cultural identity, and the experience of diaspora shape the way Maya immigrants view their health and their health care options, often leading them …

A Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice, Katherine A. Womack Oct 2011

A Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice, Katherine A. Womack

Law Student Publications

This article first examines the historical background of the Virginian-American Indian identity after European contact in Part I. This section looks at the early interactions between American Indians and colonial settlers, the treaties that defined American Indian identity, and the first government-to-government relationships between the tribes and colonial powers. It also follows the changing social attitudes toward American Indians. Part II discusses how social attitudes in the early twentieth century about American Indians led to long-reaching legal effects for Virginian-American Indians. Part III details the federal recognition process, and discusses how and why it denies Virginia’s tribes an equal place …

A Want Of News In An Occupied Zone: Newspaper Content In Occupied Lille, Roubaix, And Tourcoing, Candice Addie Quinn

Dissertations (1934 -)

The purpose of this dissertation is to ascertain exactly what news people in the occupied zone of France received during the First World War, in an attempt to assess the general assumption that the people of occupied France received little to no news. It is certain that the people in the occupied cities of Lille, Roubaix, and Tourcoing received less news than before the occupation, and most of the news they did receive came from an untrusted source, namely the German occupiers. However, research for this dissertation reveals that the cities at the urban heart of northern France, Lille, Roubaix, …

Using Learning Contracts In The Counselor Education Classroom, Kim C. O'Halloran, Megan E. Delaney

Journal of Counselor Preparation and Supervision

Adult students in counselor education programs bring diverse experiences to the classroom. In order to attract and retain students, institutions are exploring multiple delivery systems of instruction. The following study provides an overview of learning styles and characteristics of adult graduate students and explores the degree to which learning contracts may be a beneficial tool to positively impact student learning in the counselor education classroom. Surveys were administered pre- and post-participation in a master’s level counselor education classroom regarding the use of a learning contract. Results indicated that participants found the learning contract to be useful and allowed the students …

Teaching Indigenous Children: Listening To And Learning From Indigenous Teachers, Ninetta Santoro, Jo-Anne Reid, Laurie Crawford, Lee Simpson Oct 2011

Teaching Indigenous Children: Listening To And Learning From Indigenous Teachers, Ninetta Santoro, Jo-Anne Reid, Laurie Crawford, Lee Simpson

Australian Journal of Teacher Education

This article is based on the findings of a qualitative case study that examined the professional experiences and career pathways of fifty current and former Australian Indigenous teachers. Here, we draw on data obtained from semi-structured interviews with the teachers to highlight their knowledge in three key areas: ‘Indigenous ways of knowing’, ‘Indigenous learners’ lives beyond the classroom’ and ‘Building relationships with Indigenous students and communities’. We suggest that Indigenous teachers can potentially play important roles as teacher educators and as mentors to non-Indigenous teachers and preservice teachers. We argue that it is important for schooling systems and teacher education …

Nawal Al Saadawi And Hanan Al Shaykh's Authorship: Between Arab And Western Reception, Diana M. Obeid Oct 2011

Nawal Al Saadawi And Hanan Al Shaykh's Authorship: Between Arab And Western Reception, Diana M. Obeid

Institute for the Humanities Theses

When Lebanese author Layla Baalbaki wrote her novel A Space Ship of Tenderness to the Moon in 1964 about a woman's defiance to her husband's wishes and his way of maintaining societal customs and traditions, an avalanche of criticism was directed against her. She was accused of obscenity and was put on trial before a Lebanese Prosecutor. Baalbaki's experiences are symbolic of the paradoxical and contradictory reception many Arab female authors have received in the East and the West. In this thesis, I discuss this discrepancy of reception in the works of Nawal Al Saadawi and Hanan Al Shaykh, two …

Intercultural Accommodation Of Ethnic Minority Consumers: An Empirical Examination Of The Moderating Effects In Service Encounters, Sarah Mady Oct 2011

Intercultural Accommodation Of Ethnic Minority Consumers: An Empirical Examination Of The Moderating Effects In Service Encounters, Sarah Mady

Theses and Dissertations in Business Administration

The current study proposed a model of intercultural accommodation and nine emergent hypotheses grounded in three theories: Accommodation Theory, Distinctiveness Theory and the Elaboration Likelihood Model. The study expected that the offering of a service in the minority consumer's language and by an ethnically-similar service provider will lead to favorable service quality perceptions, in the absence of any intervening variables. Ethnic minority consumers were also expected to differ in their perceptions of service quality when intercultural accommodation efforts were or were not offered given a number of intervening variables. The proposed model and the nine hypotheses were assessed via a …

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

According to the Hutterite chronicles, the Habans arrived from Austrian Tyrol, Switzerland and northernmost Italy and stayed in four regions of Slovakia (Sobotište, Vel'ké, Leváre, Moravský, Svätý, Ján, Trenčín). There are some communities in western Slovakia, which retained their Haban cultural identity and still identify themselves as descendents of the Hutterite population with their own specific customs. Slovak Habans are typical founder population with significant social isolation for which high degree of inbreeding is typical. Present study investigated STR polymorphisms as a powerful genetic tool for population genetic studies. The aim was to perform a comparative, population genetic study based …
