Examining The "Stick" Of Accreditation For Medical Schools Through Reproductive Justice Lens: A Transformative Remedy For Teaching The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, Deleso Alford Washington Jan 2011

Examining The "Stick" Of Accreditation For Medical Schools Through Reproductive Justice Lens: A Transformative Remedy For Teaching The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, Deleso Alford Washington

Journal Publications

The Tuskegee Syphilis Study, like the traditional recounting of the event, failed to acknowledge the direct impact of untreated syphilis in women. Arguably, the most infamous biomedical research study ever performed by the United States government is the Tuskegee Syphilis Study, which occurred between 1932 and 1972 in Macon County, Alabama. The stated purpose of the Tuskegee Syphilis Study was to determine the effects of untreated syphilis on Black men in Macon County, Alabama. Accordingly, historical and legal accounts have primarily told the stories of the male participants of the Study.

However, an overlooked yet important question looms: What about …

A History Of Resilience Is A History Of Resistance, Melissa Ooten Jan 2011

A History Of Resilience Is A History Of Resistance, Melissa Ooten

Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies Faculty Publications

As an historian, I’m struck by the emphasis this documentary places on non-humans – be it animals, plants, soil, or mountains – although as a native of Appalachia, that doesn’t surprise me. The film is billed as “America’s first environmental history series: and as such, it gives us a bold, unique template of how to talk holistically about the concept of place and the specific place of Appalachia. While it may be particularly prescient to talk about the broader concept of place through ecology and other facets when analyzing the history of Appalachia, surely it is no less important when …

Lighthouses As An Overlapping Boundary Between Maritime And Terrestrial Landscapes : How Lighthouses Served To Connect The Growing Industries Of The Keweenaw Peninsula With The World Market, Lisa M. Gillis Jan 2011

Lighthouses As An Overlapping Boundary Between Maritime And Terrestrial Landscapes : How Lighthouses Served To Connect The Growing Industries Of The Keweenaw Peninsula With The World Market, Lisa M. Gillis

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open

Lighthouses are an important part of the industrial heritage of the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan. They functioned as an integrated system that facilitated shipping on Lake Superior and supported the growing industry of the Keweenaw Peninsula. For this reason, lighthouses can be considered as an overlapping boundary between the maritime and terrestrial landscapes. As shipping and industry changed, the lighthouse boundary also changed. Changes to the boundary are reflected in the contractors involved in the construction of lighthouses and the decisions they made with the resources, principally building materials and knowledge, which they had at their disposal. The decline of …

A Strategy To Articulate The Facility Management Knowledge Categories Within The Built Environment, Robert Doleman, David J. Brooks Jan 2011

A Strategy To Articulate The Facility Management Knowledge Categories Within The Built Environment, Robert Doleman, David J. Brooks

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

Security is applied in the built environment and this requires a close relationship with facility managers. Therefore, this study puts forward an approach to establish the facility management knowledge categories within the built environment. In part, the significance of the study stemmed from research undertaken into the compliance to Australian fire door maintenance within nursing homes, which demonstrated 87 percent noncompliance. This high level of non-compliance appeared to identify a lack of facility management knowledge, among other issues (Doleman & Brooks, 2011). The article uses a method to test the supposition of facility management knowledge construct in a three-phase Grounded …

Reframing "Professionalism:" An Integral View Of Lawyering's Lofty Ideals, Brooks A. Suttle Jan 2011

Reframing "Professionalism:" An Integral View Of Lawyering's Lofty Ideals, Brooks A. Suttle

Emory Law Journal

Whereas legal ethics define what every lawyer must do, legal professionalism takes on the more difficult task of defining the core values that the very best lawyers should aspire to in their practice. The legal profession is granted a certain amount of autonomy and independence by American society, and the continuing legitimacy of this social contract depends on the notion that the profession will take care to regulate itself and maintain standards of conduct commensurate with its essential function.

Individual Agency And Military Structure: Personal Artifacts From 1890s Fort Missoula, Jackson Cossitt Mueller Jan 2011

Individual Agency And Military Structure: Personal Artifacts From 1890s Fort Missoula, Jackson Cossitt Mueller

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

With a history spanning over 135 years, Fort Missoula, Montana, was involved in several aspects of local and national history, including the Battle of the Big Hole, the 25th Infantry Bicycle Corps, the Civilian Conservation Corps, and World War II internment camp. In the 1980s, former University of Montana anthropology professor Carling Malouf led a series of excavations, recovering hundreds of artifacts which, until this project, had been left unanalyzed. Over the course of two years and over 1500 hours of invested labor, the collections were re-processed, analyzed and curated, producing a detailed artifact catalogue and establishing provenience for most …

Problem: "Many hospital administrators and clinicians are not aware there are laws and regulations that support the provision of language access service, both for people who are deaf or hard of hearing and those with limited English proficiency" (Wilson-Stronks, 2010, p. 14). "It is estimated that about 20 million people (one in 15) in the United States speak and understand little or no English" (U.S. News & World Report, 2007, ~4).The language inconsistency within the healthcare system is hindering the care given to these clients. Untranslatable Realities, Eva Repouscou Jan 2011

Untranslatable Realities, Eva Repouscou

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Contemporary multilingualism reflects the structure of a mutable assemblage that contains compatible and conflicting components. This paper examines the terms of translation regarding the unstable condition of social and spatial figurations. Nicolas Bourriaud’s “The Radicant” and the work of other theoreticians offer a counterpoised viewpoint for a closer examination of the efficacy of translation. In addition, an overview of certain examples of contemporary art contributes to the argument that the untranslatable is the new abstraction.

Facing Off: French And English In Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Heather Macdougall Jan 2011

Facing Off: French And English In Bon Cop, Bad Cop, Heather Macdougall

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This essay performs a sociolinguistic analysis of Bon Cop Bad Cop (Eric Canuel, 2006), a bilingual action-comedy which succeeded in becoming the highest-grossing domestically-produced film in Canadian history. The paper employs research methods that have productively been applied to multilingual texts and to other aspects of the dynamic between English and French in Canada. The evidence presented, particularly the analysis of subtitling, contests the ideal of a monolingual nation-state: Bon Cop, Bad Cop’s popular success in both English and French Canada can be seen as an indication that even monolingual Canadians identify with the bilingual nature of their national …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The idea of this issue is to consider the possibility of Babelian performances in the context of scholarly mediations on multilingual realities in translation. The idea came to me as I was reading John le Carré’s 2007 novel A Most Wanted Man. While generic conventions have long prescribed at least one polyglot character per spy novel—often the spy himself—le Carré goes out of his way to represent in his post-cold-war fiction the traffic in languages that the locale demands. Set in Hamburg amid the war on terrorism and the global traffic in capital in the first decade …

Who Cares About The Rights Of Indigenous Children - Infanticide In Brazilian Indian Tribes, Aquila Mazzinghy Alvarenga Jan 2011

Who Cares About The Rights Of Indigenous Children - Infanticide In Brazilian Indian Tribes, Aquila Mazzinghy Alvarenga

UC Law SF Journal on Gender and Justice

In some parts of this world, children are abandoned or even buried alive when their tribes-their own families-consider them dangerous to the well-being of the group. Scholars and advocates have largely framed the discourse on infanticide in indigenous tribes as a conflict between the rights of indigenous peoples to preserve and practice their cultures, and internationally-recognized individual rights that forbid infanticide. This Article examines infanticide in indigenous tribes in Brazil and argues that cultural diversity cannot be invoked to justify indigenous infanticide because life is the sine qua non condition for the existence of culture. Rather, the right to life …

Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice,, Katherine Womack Jan 2011

Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice,, Katherine Womack

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This article first examines the historical background of the Virginian-American Indian identity after European contact in Part I. This section looks at the early interactions between American Indians and colonial settlers, the treaties that defined American Indian identity, and the first government-to-government relationships between the tribes and colonial powers. It also follows the changing social attitudes toward American Indians. Part II discusses how social attitudes in the early twentieth century about American Indians led to longreaching legal effects for Virginian-American Indians. Part III details the federal recognition process, and discusses how and why it denies Virginia's tribes an equal place …

Mendelian Breeding Units Versus Standard Sampling Strategies: Mitochondrial Dna Variation In Southwest Sardinia, Daria Sanna, Joseph G. Lorenz Jan 2011

Mendelian Breeding Units Versus Standard Sampling Strategies: Mitochondrial Dna Variation In Southwest Sardinia, Daria Sanna, Joseph G. Lorenz

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

We report a sampling strategy based on Mendelian Breeding Units (MBUs), representing an interbreeding group of individuals sharing a common gene pool. The identification of MBUs is crucial for case-control experimental design in association studies. The aim of this work was to evaluate the possible existence of bias in terms of genetic variability and haplogroup frequencies in the MBU sample, due to severe sample selection. In order to reach this goal, the MBU sampling strategy was compared to a standard selection of individuals according to their surname and place of birth. We analysed mitochondrial DNA variation (first hypervariable segment and …

Jacques Maritain, Man And The State (1951), Richard W. Garnett Jan 2011

Jacques Maritain, Man And The State (1951), Richard W. Garnett

Journal Articles

From the Article

Jacques Maritain was one of the twentieth century’s most important and influential Christian philosophers and political thinkers. That said, his work, thought, and aspirations were not limited by the boundaries of any particular academic disciplines or traditions. His was, as Professor Brennan has observed, a “quest to understand the whole of reality, created and redeemed.” A great scholar of the medieval accomplishments of the Angelic Doctor, St. Thomas Aquinas, Maritain’s distinctive Christian Humanism shaped the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Second Vatican Council, and the writing of the late Pope John Paul II.

College of Education Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the experiences of three teachers recruited from African countries to teach in Chicago‘s public schools. The purpose of the study was to highlight the experiences of the teachers through the lens of changing global dynamics that make such international recruitment of teachers more likely than ever before. It was apparent through this research that the movement of the teachers from developing countries to the United States of America had professional, economic and social impact on the teachers, their families and their communities. Although the teachers interviewed were hopeful that the skills they are gaining could one day …

The subject of this thesis is graphic design: specifically, the history of graphic design from the Victorian Period in the late nineteenth century until the end of the Modernist Era around the mid-twentieth century. This time period encompasses perhaps the most important developments in the brief history of graphic design, therefore it is a good place to start when considering the central question this thesis process of whether graphic design is art. The terminology used to disucss the hsitory of graphic design in this thesis--the Romantic Era, the Modernist Era, the Postmoderinist Era--is the same terminology used to describe the …

Ecophilosophies And Environmental Perspectives In The Amazon Rainforest: Conservation Through Sustainable Use Projects, Scarlett Ashlen Andrews

Honors Theses

Non-governmental organizations are on the forefront of conservation strategies throughout the world, and the Amazon Rainforest is one of the most crucial regions in the world for these efforts. Though many conservation strategies in the past focused on the establishment of protected areas, there has been a recent increase in projects aimed at sustainable use of land with the goal of conserving natural resources and ecosystem processes. This thesis is an exploration of sustainable use projects in the Andes-Amazon border region, specifically those projects which focus on agriculture and forestry. By comparing historical and theoretical ecophilosophies and analyzing survey responses …

Branding A University's Mascot, Stanley Ryan Viner

Honors Theses

The objective of this paper is to investigate the dilemma many collegiate institutions have with the appropriateness of their symbols, particularly the mascot, and how these symbols can affect the overall brand equity of a university. Plausible connections between the mascot, symbols, and brands will be formulated validating the claim that a mascot is a brand, which will pcmiit the direct application of marketing and branding theories to the mascot situation at The University of Mississippi. The importance of the mascot and the human response to collegiate symbols will be explored by the utilization of two psychological theories - Social …
