From Victims And Villains To Protagonists: Immigration And Citizenship In Modern Italy, Rachel Gleicher Jan 2011

From Victims And Villains To Protagonists: Immigration And Citizenship In Modern Italy, Rachel Gleicher

Honors Theses

The Italian media, political parties, and immigrant-related social service organizations on all sides of the spectrum have contributed to the creation of various one-dimensional perceptions of Italy’s immigrant communities which have functioned to deny immigrants’ formal citizenship status and consequently, attempted to impede their access to the basic rights and privileges national membership guarantees. While left-leaning media outlets, organizations, and individuals tend to portray immigrants as victims draining Italy of its social, economic, and material resources, the Italian right often characterizes Italy’s immigrant population as villainous intruders incapable of integration due to cultural difference and in some cases, a natural …

Buffernomics: Assessing Willingness To Pay For Lake Conservation On North Pond And East Pond, Sophie D. Sarkar Jan 2011

Buffernomics: Assessing Willingness To Pay For Lake Conservation On North Pond And East Pond, Sophie D. Sarkar

Honors Theses

Hedonic property valuations in Maine have estimated that a one-meter decrease in water clarity can reduce shoreline property values by 4 to 16%. To avoid a loss on their lakefront investment, shoreline property owners have a particularly large incentive to conserve lake water quality. Nevertheless, while some shoreline residents voluntarily install vegetated buffers and actively participate in lake stewardship, others continue to ignore shoreline zoning laws at the expense of lake health. In this thesis, I examine the dichotomy of active and indifferent shoreline residents by analyzing the motivations that distinguish residents who are willing to pay (WTP) for and …

Of Music, Mathematics, And Magic: Why Math Is All Made Up And Why It Works So Well, Gregory A. Leach Jan 2011

Of Music, Mathematics, And Magic: Why Math Is All Made Up And Why It Works So Well, Gregory A. Leach

Masters Theses

The purpose of my study was to answer the philosophical question of whether mathematics is invented or discovered. This question is an age-old and important one with many implications regarding the understanding of mathematics, logic, science, and truth. Answering this question correctly can inform us not only about the nature of what is known, but even what is possible to know. In the field of mathematics itself, the answer to this question could change the way that mathematics is taught, learned, and implemented in the future. The problem was addressed through research, comparison, and analysis of books and articles where …

Using Sequential Mixed Social Science Methods To Define And Measure Heritage Conservation Performance, Jeremy C. Wells Jan 2011

Using Sequential Mixed Social Science Methods To Define And Measure Heritage Conservation Performance, Jeremy C. Wells

Architecture, Art, and Historic Preservation Faculty Publications

There is no agreed-upon definition for heritage conservation performance, but it is possible to borrow ideas from the natural resource conservation field to inform this concept. Dimensions of performance can include economic, technical, and sociocultural and experiential indices. Because heritage conservation ostensibly benefits people as its primary goal, however, the values of most stakeholders ought to play a role in defining performance. Most of these values are subjective and represent sociocultural and personal meanings and tend to differ dramatically from the positivistic, fabric-centered value system of conservation experts. Measurement implies quantification, yet many sociocultural values are based on qualitative meanings …

Getting Real About Legal Realism, New Legal Realism And Clinical Legal Education, Kate Kruse Jan 2011

Getting Real About Legal Realism, New Legal Realism And Clinical Legal Education, Kate Kruse

Faculty Scholarship

Jerome Frank’s call for a “clinical lawyer-school” is cited so frequently in clinical scholarship that it borders on the canonical. Like many calls for reform in legal education, Frank’s plea for clinical lawyer-schools was based on a critique of the appellate case method of legal instruction. However, unlike most critiques, the legal realist critique was embedded within a jurisprudential challenge to the meaning of law itself, arising from American Legal Realism. Running through legal realist jurisprudence was a distinction between the “law in books” and the “law in action,” with the idea that law is not found primarily in statutes …

Secular Not Secularist America, Michael Scaperlanda Jan 2011

Secular Not Secularist America, Michael Scaperlanda

Campbell Law Review

Other contributors to this symposium see "liberalism"' as the problem and "God" as the solution.' To a large extent, Ithink they have it backwards. "God" is the problem to which "liberalism" provides a particularly creative solution. Power hates a rival,' and God - or allegiance to an all-embracing monotheistic God - poses a significant threat to power because the wild faith of the martyr cannot be tamed by civil authority.

Gendering French In Tunisia: Language Ideologies And Nationalism, Keith Walters Jan 2011

Gendering French In Tunisia: Language Ideologies And Nationalism, Keith Walters

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper seeks to describe and account for a common ideology among Tunisians and North Africans more broadly that associates the use of French with women, thereby symbolically associating the use of Arabic with men. In this regard, the use of French can be said to be "gendered" there. In an effort to historicize this phenomenon, I sketch the social history of French in Tunisia, particularly in regards to the access female and male Tunisians would historically have had to it through the institution of schooling. I then consider the different relationships contemporary Tunisian men and women have with French. …

Ip Legal Ethics In The Everyday Practice Of Law: An Empirical Perspective On Patent Litigators, 10 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 309 (2011), William T. Gallagher

UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law

This article presents preliminary findings from a qualitative empirical study of patent litigators. Part of a larger and ongoing project studying intellectual property lawyers in patent, trademark, and copyright enforcement and litigation actions, this article focuses on ethical decision-making by patent litigators in the pretrial discovery process. The article is based on data from in-depth, semi-structured interviews with fifty-five patent litigators and from a detailed case study of the infamous Qualcomm patent sanctions case. The article critically examines how patent litigators perceive of and respond to ethical issues that arise in the discovery process. It also analyzes the structural and …

Neuroresponse To Social Exclusion By A Childhood Friend: An Erp Study, Jessica Crawford Jan 2011

Neuroresponse To Social Exclusion By A Childhood Friend: An Erp Study, Jessica Crawford

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

We examined the role of friendship on the neural correlates of social exclusion in middle childhood with event-related potentials (ERPs) during a computer-simulated ball toss game, Cyberball. Experiencing fair play initially, children were then left out of the ball toss during an exclusion period. Forty children (ages 8-14) who played with a best friend and an unfamiliar peer were compared to forty-eight children (ages 8-14) who played with two unfamiliar peers. A slow wave (484-900ms post-stimulus) for both groups was evident in each of the conditions (favor, "not my turn," and rejection). Consistent with our previous middle childhood work, we …

The Quest For A Meaningful “Special Education”: The Educational Journeys Of Nine Students With Learning Disabilities From An Inaccessible Learning Environment To One That Enabled Them To Learn, Amy E. Ballin Jan 2011

The Quest For A Meaningful “Special Education”: The Educational Journeys Of Nine Students With Learning Disabilities From An Inaccessible Learning Environment To One That Enabled Them To Learn, Amy E. Ballin

Educational Studies Dissertations

This ethnographic case study follows the educational journeys of nine students with learning disabilities who with luck and parental advocacy attend a school designed to address their disability. The researcher explores the role of cultures, both within and outside the school, and examines some of the effects of the social construction of special education on student learning.

This study draws no conclusions regarding the connections between the cultures at the school and the student’s success. However it does highlight the perspective of students, parents, and teachers, noting the ways in which they describe how and why this school environment allowed …

In the Fall of 2009, the Center for Puerto Rican Studies (CENTRO) undertook the Centro Cultural Competence Initiative (CCI) with the support of a one-year grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). The goal of the CCI is to address the need for culturally appropriate work in a variety of professions by training students to be culturally competent practitioners. In the Fall of 2010, the Urban Affairs and Planning Department at Hunter College joined CENTRO as a partner in this initiative. Full time Professors Sigmund Shipp, Laxmi Ramasubramanian, and Tom Angotti worked …

Implementing Routine Provider-Initiated Hiv Testing In Public Health Care Facilities In Kenya: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Nurses' Experiences, Catrin Evans, Eunice Ndirangu Jan 2011

Implementing Routine Provider-Initiated Hiv Testing In Public Health Care Facilities In Kenya: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Nurses' Experiences, Catrin Evans, Eunice Ndirangu

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Routine 'provider-initiated testing and counselling' (PITC) for HIV has been implemented amidst concern over how consent, confidentiality and counselling (the 3C’s) can be maintained in underresourced health care settings. In Kenya, PITC has been rolled out since 2005, HIV prevalence is 7.1% and over 86% of adults have not been tested. Kenyan nurses are the main cadre implementing PITC but little is known about their experiences of incorporating HIV testing into everyday practice and the challenges faced in maintaining the 3’Cs within their work environments. This study aimed to explore these issues and adopted a qualitative multi-method design using a …

The Cut, Robert Ben Henry Moffatt

All ETDs from UAB

The Cut is a novella centered on Kyle Gordon. He works as a Cutter for a government program that has been tasked with weighing one citizen against another. The dangerous rise in global temperature has unleashed a pandemic that seems unstoppable. In an attempt to preserve civilization people like Gordon are deciding who is worth saving and who isn't. Those that pass the Cut are then taken into orbit where they will stay safely out of reach from the catastrophes on Earth. Gordon's task becomes even more difficult when he realizes that one of the citizens he failed was actually …

Layered Learning: Student Consultants Deepening Classroom And Life Lessons, Alison Cook-Sather Jan 2011

Layered Learning: Student Consultants Deepening Classroom And Life Lessons, Alison Cook-Sather

Education Program Faculty Research and Scholarship

The action research project reported on here took as its central problem of practice the absence of students from forums for faculty development in higher education. Findings suggest that, when undergraduate students are positioned as pedagogical consultants to college faculty members, multiple layers of learning unfold. After a brief overview of The Andrew W. Mellon Teaching and Learning Institute that serves as the context for this study, I present student reflections on the ways that student consultants gain a more informed critical perspective within and beyond classrooms and build greater confidence, capacity, and agency as learners and as people. The …

American Manpower: Work And Masculinity In The 1970s, Victoria Ludas Jan 2011

American Manpower: Work And Masculinity In The 1970s, Victoria Ludas

All Open Access Legacy Dissertations and Capstone Projects

This paper is about three things, as examined over the course of the 1970s: the changes in the state and dependability of work, the pressures of masculinity as felt by heterosexual white men over the age of 20 in the working and middle classes, and what occurred because of the relationship between work and that masculinity. To understand 3 the third, it is necessary to understand the first two, and what happened in both cases during the decade. Even disregarding the male-female dynamic in the increase in women at work, the state of employment changed in massive and permanent ways. …
