Pedagogies Of Race: The Politics Of Whiteness In An African American Studies Course, Regina V. Jones Jan 2011

Pedagogies Of Race: The Politics Of Whiteness In An African American Studies Course, Regina V. Jones

Ethnic Studies Review

This paper evaluates students' arguments for a color-blind society to avoid discussions related to the continued existence of racism in USA culture. Relatedly, this writer finds that as an black woman her status as facilitator in the classroom is directly challenged, on occasion, and that race and gender play a primary role in students' perception of classroom material and how she is perceived. Classroom discussions related to historical texts reveal that structures of domination have slanted perception of black and white people in U.S. culture. Finally, a key to open dialogue about race and racism, primarily for white students, is …

Rethinking Prayer And Health Research: An Exploratory Inquiry On Prayer’S Psychological Dimension, Adrian Andreescu Jan 2011

Rethinking Prayer And Health Research: An Exploratory Inquiry On Prayer’S Psychological Dimension, Adrian Andreescu

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

A brief literature review of cancer survival trials is employed by the author to raise questions

on their design and to bring speculatively into discussion concepts such as “worldview”,

“intentional normative dissociation”, and “psychosomatic plasticity-proneness”. Using prayer’s

psychological dimension as a way to unite such elements opens new fertile perspectives on

the academic study of prayer and health. In this context, it is suggested that a consistent

interdisciplinary research agenda is required in order to understand those biopsychosocial

factors interconnected within the process and outcome of prayer before attempting to

decipher the big answers laying dormant probably within the transpersonal …

Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich And Famous: Ideological Shifts In Popular Culture, Reagan-Era Sitcoms And Portrayals Of The Working Class, April Janise Raine Jan 2011

Lifestyles Of The Not So Rich And Famous: Ideological Shifts In Popular Culture, Reagan-Era Sitcoms And Portrayals Of The Working Class, April Janise Raine

McNair Scholars Research Journal

My research indentifies, through examination of popular culture, a major shift in meanings and values surrounding the working class at a vital time in US history: the Reagan years. During the Reagan Era, the working class was weakened economically, politically and ideologically. I explore three salient themes evidenced throughout the family-centered sitcoms analyzed in my research: Minimization of Working-Class jobs, Working Class Selfdeprecation and Defeat, and the Stigmatization of aid/assistance. These themes emerged from an inductive analysis of family based sitcoms (airing 1980-1988) which encompassed main characters who were both representatives of the corporate elite and had direct interactions with …

Misconstructing Sexuality In Same-Sex Marriage Jurisprudence, Jeffrey Kosbie Jan 2011

Misconstructing Sexuality In Same-Sex Marriage Jurisprudence, Jeffrey Kosbie

Northwestern Journal of Law & Social Policy

Drawing on sociology, queer studies, and legal scholarship, this Comment develops a textual methodology to study sexuality in court opinions. In particular, this methodology uses inconsistencies between opinions to highlight how courts rely on cultural assumptions. This Comment applies this methodology to eighteen state same-sex marriage cases, identifying four analytic models of sexuality: sexuality consists only of behaviors; sexuality belongs to lesbians and gays; society should regulate sexuality; and marriage forms a normatively desirable model for sexuality. These models contribute significantly to public discourse over the meaning of sexuality. Applying sociological insights to narrow judicial models of sexuality suggests that …

Transforming Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy In Rural Zimbabwe Classrooms: The Place Of Local Culture And Mother Tongue Use, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru Jan 2011

Transforming Classroom Discourse And Pedagogy In Rural Zimbabwe Classrooms: The Place Of Local Culture And Mother Tongue Use, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

Rural African classrooms are still practicing discourses and pedagogies that contribute towards students' continued underachievement and marginalization. The use of behaviourist-based pedagogical approaches and the exclusion of learners' socio-cultural experiences including their mother tongue (MT) still characterize most classroom practices. The use of classroom discourse that severely constrains opportunities for pupil participation and the development of higher order thinking skills has also been noted. This paper describes an intervention based on the principles of transformative and constructive developmental pedagogy designed to improve approaches to teaching and learning in a primary school in rural Zimbabwe. Examples of prevailing classroom practices organized …

Genetic Data For 15 Str Loci In A Kadazan-Dusun Population From East Malaysia, B.P. Kee, L.H. Lian, P.C. Lee, T.X. Lai, K.H. Chua

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Allele frequencies of 15 short tandem repeat (STR) loci, namely D5S818, D7S820, D13S317, D16S539, TH01, TPOX, Penta D, Penta E, D3S1358, D8S1179, D18S51, D21S11, CSF1PO, vWA, and FGA, were determined for 154 individuals from the Kadazan-Dusun tribe, an indigenous population of East Malaysia. All loci were amplified by polymerase chain reaction, using the Powerplex 16 system. Alleles were typed using a gene analyzer and the Genemapper ID software. Various statistical parameters were calculated and the combined power of discrimination for the 15 loci in the population was calculated as 0.999999999999999. These loci are thus, informative and can be used effectively …

Testing The Event In Isolation On Maui, Charles Bendig Jan 2011

Testing The Event In Isolation On Maui, Charles Bendig

Honors Capstones

Archaeological theory has usually depended upon investigating locations through the entire length of occupation. The novelty of addressing archaeological data through the analysis of separate events in time has been proposed by several scholars. An eventful analysis of archaeology or “eventful archaeology” is addressed here by analyzing archaeological data obtain from the Koholuapapa heiau on the island of Maui. The discovery of an adjacent residential enclosure constructed after the collapse of the kapu system across the Hawaiian archipelago supports a spatial transformation. Data analysis of the archaeological investigation identifies the numerous cascading events leading up to the cultural transformation of …

The Individual Behind The Image Female Idols In Their Various Forms, Patricia Lois Nuss Jan 2011

The Individual Behind The Image Female Idols In Their Various Forms, Patricia Lois Nuss

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The research investigated the artistic and photographic processes corresponding with two studies motivated by the artist's personal history and focused on the role, affect, and history of various female idols represented in art history, religion, and modern American popular media. The first part of the study documented female models as they were simultaneously asked by the artist to think of a range of personal but nonspecific moments from her life, the women were asked not to share their thoughts, only the moment spent thinking, with the artist. The second part of the study documented aspiring models as they awoke during …

A Sense Of Place Ethnographic Reflection On Two Palestinian Life Histories, Patrick H. Barrett Jan 2011

A Sense Of Place Ethnographic Reflection On Two Palestinian Life Histories, Patrick H. Barrett

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

There is a labyrinth of complex social connections between people and places that deserves careful anthropological reflection. People do not simply occupy places; they experience them, infusing them with life and social meaning. Basso (1996:53) argues that ethnography has reported little about the complex ways in which people are “alive to the world around them.” Anthropology is currently experiencing a resurging emphasis on place that seeks to account for its remarkably social features. Rather than primarily thinking about place when determining a location for fieldwork, emerging anthropological reflection shows the discipline is repositioning itself to explore the complex and often …

Funerary Iconography On An Infant Burial Jar From Ashkelon, Brian R. Doak, Kathleen Birney Jan 2011

Funerary Iconography On An Infant Burial Jar From Ashkelon, Brian R. Doak, Kathleen Birney

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

The 2007 season of the Leon Levy Expedition to Ashkelon unearthed a remarkable intramural infant jar burial, bearing roughly incised images on both sides. While a number of intramural infant burials have been recovered from late twelfth–eleventh century levels at the site, this jar is the first burial to reveal anything about the funerary beliefs and rituals that might be associated with such practices. The iconography itself is unique within the Philistine milieu, as well as within the broader context of Syro-Palestinian funerary imagery, instead echoing Egyptian funerary motifs. After a brief discussion of the jar and its archaeological context …

Utopia Reconsidered: Two Levels Of Perfection In Society, Jason Lepojärvi Jan 2011

Utopia Reconsidered: Two Levels Of Perfection In Society, Jason Lepojärvi

Faculty Publications - George Fox School of Theology

Every person has wondered whether idealism without naïveté or realism without cynicism is possible. In common parlance, utopia is not only eu-topic (a place of the good), but also forever a-topic (without place). Who is right: the idealist who believes, or the realist who disbelieves, in the possibility of a perfect society? This article suggests that utopia both is and is not possible. There are two ways to understand the idea of a ‘‘perfect society.’’ In an absolutely perfect society there is no reality of sin. Given this reality, however, in some societies it nonetheless is easier to be good. …

Sustainable Development In The Cultural Context: A Review Of Sources And Analysis Of Gaps, Joann Jacoby, Liz Cooper Jan 2011

Sustainable Development In The Cultural Context: A Review Of Sources And Analysis Of Gaps, Joann Jacoby, Liz Cooper

University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications

In order to be effective, sustainable development efforts must be grounded in a fundamental understanding of the local context. Two librarians with backgrounds in anthropology will address the issue of culturally-grounded sustainable development resources available online and in digital repositories. The presenters will review the literature on the importance of the cultural context in sustainable development, identify strengths of current culturally-grounded online collections, and review gaps in order to identify areas where libraries should focus further efforts to develop these types of collections.
