Nietzsche’S Naturalism Reconsidered, Brian Leiter Jan 2011

Nietzsche’S Naturalism Reconsidered, Brian Leiter

Articles

According to one recent scholar, “Most commentators on Nietzsche would agree that he is in a broad sense a naturalist in his mature philosophy” (Janaway 2007: 34). This may come as a surprise to those who think of Martin Heidegger, Walter Kaufmann, Paul DeMan, Sarah Kofman, and Alexander Nehamas, among others, as “commentators” on Nietzsche. And yet there are, indeed, clear signs that in the last twenty years, as Nietzsche studies has become more philosophically sophisticated, the naturalist reading of Nietzsche has come to the fore, certainly in Anglophone scholarship.1 In Nietzsche on Morality (Leiter 2002), I set out …

Exchange, Conflict And Coercion: The Ritual Dynamics Of The Notting Hill Carnival Past And Present, Jennifer Edwards, J. David Knottnerus Jan 2011

Exchange, Conflict And Coercion: The Ritual Dynamics Of The Notting Hill Carnival Past And Present, Jennifer Edwards, J. David Knottnerus

Ethnic Studies Review

This study investigates patterns of social relationships involving the Notting Hill Carnival. Two theoretical approaches are employed elementary relations theory and structural ritualization theory - to explain how the carnival has been strategically used in very different ways by various groups to accomplish their objectives. We suggest the Notting Hill Carnival is a special collective ritual event that has played a crucial role in three quite different structured arrangements involving coercion, conflict, and exchange since its beginning in Trinidad and subsequently in London. Four time periods where distinct changes in the nature of these relationships have occurred are examined: (1) …

The Possibilities Of Asian American Citizenship: A Critical Race And Gender Analysis, Clare Ching Jen Jan 2011

The Possibilities Of Asian American Citizenship: A Critical Race And Gender Analysis, Clare Ching Jen

Ethnic Studies Review

Conventionally, citizenship is understood as a legal category of membership in a national polity that ensures equal rights among its citizens. This conventional understanding, however, begs disruption when the histories and experiences of marginalized groups are brought to the fore. Equal citizenship in all its forms for marginalized populations has yet to be realized. For Asian Americans, rights presumably accorded to the legal status of citizenship have proven tenuous across different historical and political moments. Throughout U.S. history, "Asian American" or "Oriental" men and women have been designated aliens against whom white male and female citizenships have been legitimized. These …

Becoming Otherwise: Politics, Metaphysics And Power In Judith Butler And Alfred North Whitehead, Alan Van Wyk Jan 2011

Becoming Otherwise: Politics, Metaphysics And Power In Judith Butler And Alfred North Whitehead, Alan Van Wyk

CGU Theses & Dissertations

The post-secular event within which we live is occasioned as the limit of the secular project. The secular project meets its limit in attempting to separate a religious private sphere from a public sphere while at the same time repeating as a demand a religious subjectivation of the public sphere: demanding conformity to a simple subjectivity, producing a world of simple subjects through a theologically determined metaphysics of conversion. In this latter demand secularism enforces a simplicity of its subjects and its world. Yet this simplicity cannot be taken up into or as life. To genuinely live and think the …

Financial Cultural Capital: Cultural Capital In The Context Of Higher Education And Federal Student Loans, Joey Brown Jan 2011

Financial Cultural Capital: Cultural Capital In The Context Of Higher Education And Federal Student Loans, Joey Brown

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an exploratory quantitative sociological analysis of the financial knowledge and experience of undergraduate students who have borrostudent loans. It also explores students' feelings about their loans. I surveyed 100 undergraduate students who had contracted student loans to gather information about their knowledge of financial instruments and feelings about their student loan debt. To explore students' knowledge and feelings, I created three indices: knowledge, feelings, and financial cultural capital and tested for racial differences between Blacks and Whites. The knowledge index investigates students' knowledge of the terms of their loans and experience with basic financial instruments. The feelings …

Leadership Development For Today’S Ktunaxa Youth: Command Structure Versus The Crazy Dog Society, Christopher Horsethief Jan 2011

Leadership Development For Today’S Ktunaxa Youth: Command Structure Versus The Crazy Dog Society, Christopher Horsethief

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

Block (2008) opens his book on the structure of belonging with the statement, "[S]ocial fabric of community is formed from an expanding shared sense of belonging...shaped by the idea that only when we are connected and care for the well-being of the whole that a civil and democratic society is created" (p. 9). The concept of belonging has been addressed directly in servant-leadership studies, including belonging to community or organization (Ba Banutu-Gomez, 2004 ), belonging and resiliency (Wheatley & Kellner-Rogers, 1998), belonging through a sharing of humanity with followership (Birkenmeier, Carson, & Carson, 2003). It can also be argued that …

The Functionalism Of Legal Origins, Ralf Michaels Jan 2011

The Functionalism Of Legal Origins, Ralf Michaels

Faculty Scholarship

This article, written on request for the centennial issue of Ius Commune Europaeum, connects the economic literature on legal origins (La Porta et al) and the World Bank's Doing Business reports with discussions in comparative law about the functional method. It finds that a number of parallels and similarities exist, and that much of the criticism that has been voiced against functionalism should apply, mutates mutants, also to these more recent projects. The attraction that these projects have derive not, it is argued, from their methodological sophistication, but instead from "the strange lure of economics" and from the ostentatious objectivity …

Theorizing Practice In Economic Geography: Foundations, Challenges, And Possibilities, Andrew Jones, James T. Murphy Jan 2011

Theorizing Practice In Economic Geography: Foundations, Challenges, And Possibilities, Andrew Jones, James T. Murphy

Geography

Over the last decade or so there has been an identifiable shift in the interests of many economic geographers towards a concern with practices: stabilized, routinized, or improvised social actions that constitute and reproduce economic space, and through and within which socioeconomic actors and communities embed knowledge, organize production activities, and interpret and derive meaning from the world. Although this shift has gained significant momentum its general theoretical significance remains somewhat unclear and the concept is vulnerable to criticisms that it is incoherent, too 'micro-scale' in emphasis, unable to provide valid links between everyday practices and higher-order phenomena (eg, institutions, …

Unpacking Faculty Engagement: The Types Of Activities Faculty Members Report As Publicly Engaged Scholarship During Promotion And Tenure, Chris R. Glass, Diane M. Doberneck, John H. Schweitzer

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Faculty Publications

While a growing body of scholarship has focused on the personal, professional, and organizational factors that influence faculty members’ involvement in publicly engaged scholarship, the nature and scope of faculty publicly engaged scholarship itself has remained largely unexplored. What types of activities are faculty members involved in as publicly engaged scholarship? How does their involvement vary by demographic, type of faculty appointment, or college grouping? To explore these questions, researchers conducted a quantitative content analysis of 173 promotion and tenure documents from a research-intensive, land-grant, Carnegie Classified Community Engagement university and found statistically significant differences for the variables age, number …

Walking Through History: Balboa Park An Audio Guide Tour, Brent Michael Bernasconi Jan 2011

Walking Through History: Balboa Park An Audio Guide Tour, Brent Michael Bernasconi

Theses

By the early twentieth century, San Diego had been passed over by major industry when the train depot and major harbors were located in Los Angeles. In order to attract investment and trade to San Diego, the city leaders set aside their 1,400 acre park to house an exhibition in celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal. Balboa Park hosted the Panama-California Exhibition in 1915, and it was a huge success. The trade, however, never came. Twenty years after the first exhibition, the citizens and leaders of San Diego decided to host another exhibition, so in 1935, the California-Pacific …

The Legal Pluralism Phenomenon: Emerging Issues On Protecting And Preserving The Sacred Ifugao Bulul, Mayo Buenafe Jan 2011

The Legal Pluralism Phenomenon: Emerging Issues On Protecting And Preserving The Sacred Ifugao Bulul, Mayo Buenafe

Nebraska Anthropologist

Legal Pluralism is a pervasive social phenomenon encompassing issues relevant to the protection and preservation of indigenous peoples' intellectual and cultural properties. This study focuses on the sacred lfugao bulul or lfugao rice granary guardian spirit, which is being sold and traded as antiques, cultural properties, and tourist souvenirs. The sacred lfugao bulul is studied as an intellectual and cultural property and explores how it can be authenticated, preserved, and protected within three legal systems: Customary Law (lfugao rituals, beliefs, and practices), State Law (Cultural Properties Protection and Preservation Act or P.D. 374), and International Law (Intellectual Property Code of …

Women's Worth: A Western Misconception, Caroline Jones Jan 2011

Women's Worth: A Western Misconception, Caroline Jones

Nebraska Anthropologist

Focusing on gender relations and dominance within the Gusii of Kenya, Tombema, Kaihsienkung, and India cultures this paper will focus on bridewealth and dowry, specifically what it means in terms of "women's value" or status within these cultural groups. The dominance of the male perspective in academics is one cause for women's domestic or 'secondary' subsistence work being given lower status. Women's contributions to subsistence especially domestically (in the home) are great. This paper will focus on two points. First is the lack of research done on the subject of bridewealth and dowry; the second point is to look at …

The Effect Of Sea Access On Economic Income Level In African Nations, Tiffany Napier Jan 2011

The Effect Of Sea Access On Economic Income Level In African Nations, Tiffany Napier

Nebraska Anthropologist

A sea border provides trading opportunities for nations and enables participation in the world market and therefore economic growth. In this essay sea access is considered a significant limiting factor in the economic success of African countries. Research of this hypothesis illustrates a positive relationship between access to the sea and the economic success of African nations when Gross National Income per capita is utilized as the economic indicator. This essay summarizes the methods utilized, results obtained, and the implications of sea access as a limiting factor in the economic success of African states.

Слышишь Меня? Can You Hear Me Now? Signaling Theory And The Cold War, Curtis Sedlacek Jan 2011

Слышишь Меня? Can You Hear Me Now? Signaling Theory And The Cold War, Curtis Sedlacek

Nebraska Anthropologist

In this paper the Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union is analyzed using a variation of signaling theory. The signals sent between the two nations were important as they could be used by both countries to achieve victory, defined as one system of government and economics triumphing over the other without direct military conflict. To achieve victory both countries had to signal their fitness to the people of the world. By treating a conflict as a collection of signals it may be possible to understand what signals lead to what behaviors and see these signals in …

Sling Technology: Towards An Understanding Of Capabilities, Eric Skov Jan 2011

Sling Technology: Towards An Understanding Of Capabilities, Eric Skov

Nebraska Anthropologist

Slings as artifacts have seen relatively little research compared to other primitive weaponry. Yet these simple tools are nearly ubiquitous in their distribution among human societies and in many cases - ranging from Classical Greece and Rome to the Incans and Aztecs at contact - slings played a major role in waifare. Given the importance of the sling to many cultures, it is surprising that its capabilities are so poorly understood Investigating range and impact effects, this paper critiques previous literature and offers original mathematical modeling.

The Domestic Face Of Globalization: Law's Role In The Integration Of Immigrants In The United States, Alfred C. Aman, Graham Rehrig Jan 2011

The Domestic Face Of Globalization: Law's Role In The Integration Of Immigrants In The United States, Alfred C. Aman, Graham Rehrig

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article applies a global perspective to immigration in the United States, focusing in particular on law’s role in the integration of immigrants into U.S. society. The global perspective illuminates the relationship of immigration to other forms of transnationalism, as well as to the situation of non-immigrant minorities and the working poor. We review the history of immigration law in the United States as well as the main elements of current debate. Drawing on the Constitution’s guarantees of equal protection, as well as the preemption doctrine, we suggest specific ways in which immigration law might optimally evolve in the future. …

Economics, Behavioral Biology, And Law, Jeffrey E. Stake, Owen D. Jones, Erin O'Hara O'Connor Jan 2011

Economics, Behavioral Biology, And Law, Jeffrey E. Stake, Owen D. Jones, Erin O'Hara O'Connor

Articles by Maurer Faculty

This article compares the relevance to law of two unexpectedly similar fields: economics and behavioral biology. It first examines the assumptions, core concepts, methodological tenets, and emphases of the two fields. It then compares the interdisciplinary fields of law and economics, on one hand, with law and behavioral biology, on the other-highlighting not only important similarities but also important differences. The article subsequently explores ways that biological perspectives on human behavior may, among other things, improve economic models and the behavioral insights they generate. The article concludes that although there are important differences between the two fields, the overlaps between …
