Drafting Human Ancestry: What Does The Neanderthal Genome Tell Us About Hominid Evolution? Commentary On Green Et Al. (2010), Michael Hofreiter

Human Biology

Ten years after the first draft versions of the human genome were
announced, technical progress in both DNA sequencing and ancient DNA
analyses has allowed a research team around Ed Green and Svante Pa¨a¨bo to
complete this task from infinitely more difficult hominid samples: a few
pieces of bone originating from our closest, albeit extinct, relatives, the
Neanderthals. Pulling the Neanderthal sequences out of a sea of contaminating
environmental DNA impregnating the bones and at the same time
avoiding the problems of contamination with modern human DNA is in itself
a remarkable accomplishment. However, the crucial question in the long …

The Geography Of The Class Culture Wars, Lisa R. Pruitt Mar 2011

The Geography Of The Class Culture Wars, Lisa R. Pruitt

Seattle University Law Review

As suggested by the title of her new book, Reshaping the Work-Family Debate: Why Men and Class Matter, Joan Williams takes class seriously. Class matters, Williams argues, because “socially conscious progressives” need political allies to achieve progress with their agenda for work-family reform. Williams calls us not only to think about class and recognize it as a significant axis of stratification and (dis)advantage, but also to treat the working class with respect and dignity. Emblematic of Williams’s argument is her challenge to us to “[d]iscard[] Marxian analyses from 30,000 feet” and “come down to learn enough about working-class life …

Conviction, Confrontation, And Crawford: Gang Expert Testimony As Testimonial Hearsay, Hon. Jack Nevin Mar 2011

Conviction, Confrontation, And Crawford: Gang Expert Testimony As Testimonial Hearsay, Hon. Jack Nevin

Seattle University Law Review

This Article will discuss how gang expert reliance on testimonial hearsay violates Crawford. Both the spirit and letter of Crawford are violated when the information relied on by law enforcement has not passed the “crucible” of pretrial cross-examination mandated by Crawford to assure reliability. Moreover, this Article will offer a way to reconcile ER 703 with the requirements of Crawford.

Part II of this Article will discuss the history and application of Crawford and its expansion into virtually every area of testimonial hearsay. Part III will discuss the evolving and growing area of gang expert testimony as a …

Uncommon Genes, Unpatentable Subject Matter, Adriane Scola Mar 2011

Uncommon Genes, Unpatentable Subject Matter, Adriane Scola

Seattle University Law Review

Human gene sequences can be conceptualized in three ways: as a molecular fragment, as genetic information, and as a product of cultural heritage. This Comment uses the BRCA litigation as an organizing principle to discuss the importance of understanding human genes as something more than just biological material. Part II addresses the background of the BRCA gene-patent case and the legal arguments against patenting gene sequences. Part III discusses the ethical objections to gene patents by focusing on common-heritage rationales. Further, Part III addresses the inadequacy of the Common Heritage Doctrine as applied to human gene sequences. Part IV highlights …

Next Year In Jerusalem: Constructions Of Israeli Nationalism In High Holiday Rituals, Amelia Caron Mar 2011

Next Year In Jerusalem: Constructions Of Israeli Nationalism In High Holiday Rituals, Amelia Caron

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This article explores the intersection of nationalism and Jewish identity maintenance with High Holiday celebrations carried out in the Diaspora. Using directed interviews and participant observation, I took part in the rituals of Rosh Hashanah (the Jewish New Year) and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) to uncover the way that American Jews and Israelis living in the Jewish Diaspora create and sustain a dialogue with their “traditional” homeland, Israel. However, the connections between Jews and this homeland have shifted dramatically in recent times. Although Israel encourages all persons of Jewish descent to immigrate to the Holy Land, a complex …

The Positive Unity: How Solovyov’S Ethics Can Contribute To Constructing A Working Model For Business Ethics In Modern Russia, Andrey V. Shirin

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

This paper will point to resources within Russian thought that could contribute to the formation of a viable ethic of relation between the state and voluntary associations (including corporations). These resources will be identified within the thought of Vladimir Solovyov, the most influential Russian religious philosopher of the 19th and 20th centuries, specifically within his concept of positive all-unity.
