Environmental Implications Of Polymer Coated Urea, Joshua James Lemonte Apr 2011

Environmental Implications Of Polymer Coated Urea, Joshua James Lemonte

Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen is an essential plant nutrient in the biosphere. Although N is necessary and beneficial for life, it is also a common pollutant in the atmosphere and hydrosphere as it may be lost to the atmosphere as ammonia (NH3) or nitrous oxide (N2O) gases or to groundwater as nitrate (NO3-) following fertilization. Polymer coated urea (PCU) is one type of N fertilizer which uses temperature-controlled diffusion to control N release to better match plant demand and mitigate environmental losses of N. The objectives of this project were to simultaneously compare the effects of PCU on gaseous (as N2O and NH3) …

David Maslanka's Desert Roads, Four Songs For Clarinet And Wind Ensemble: An Analysis And Performer's Guide, Joshua R. Mietz

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Known primarily as a composer for the wind band, few American composers have received the notoriety and widespread acclaim that David Maslanka has since 1970. His works for wind ensemble are now considered standard repertoire and are played frequently by high school, college-level, and professional ensembles alike. Additionally, his works for chamber groups and soloists have continued to gain in popularity.  As of the writing of this document, Maslanka has composed concertos for saxophone, euphonium, flute, marimba, trombone, and piano.  Early in 2005, he completed his first large-scale work for solo clarinet with wind ensemble accompaniment:  Desert Roads.  Desert …

Fox, Kenta Nakamura, Richard Cowper.Solari, Craig R. Tomlinson, Hongchang Qu, John D. Lambris, Panagiotis A. Tsonis

Biology Faculty Publications

Purpose: To evaluate the effects of complement employing a mouse model for secondary cataract. Methods: The role of complement receptor C5a (CD88) was evaluated after cataract surgery in mice. An antagonist specific to C5a receptor was administered intraperitoneally to mice. Epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) was evaluated by alpha-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) staining and proliferation by bromodeoxyuridine (5-bromo-2'- deoxyuridine, BrdU) incorporation. Gene expression patterns was examined by microarray analysis and quantitative polymerase chain reaction (QPCR). Results: We found that administration of a C5aR antagonist in C57BL/6J mice decreases EMT, as evidenced by α-SMA expression, and cell proliferation. Gene expression by …

The Importance Of Education Systems In Post-Conflict Settings: The Case Of Bosnia-Herzegovina (Bih), Emily Coles Apr 2011

The Importance Of Education Systems In Post-Conflict Settings: The Case Of Bosnia-Herzegovina (Bih), Emily Coles

Honors Projects

This paper considers how education systems in post-conflict settings impact reconstruction processes using the case of Bosnia-Herzegovina (BiH) as an example. Three separate literatures are reviewed: post-conflict settings/reconstruction, reconciliation, and education systems. The paper analyzes the transitions, security, political, social and economic, which characterize post-conflict settings and reconstruction and argues that they must occur consequentially. Additionally, post-conflict reconstruction must always include both short and long-term goals in the peace agreement and provide for development of local capacity. In BiH these transitions were incomplete. The placement of a constitution in the peace agreement, without provisions for its revision, has also led …

Destruction By Fire: Interpreting The Lake Of Fire Vignette From Two Twenty-First Dynasty Funerary Papyri, Melissa Boyschou

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

First mentioned in Coffin Texts spells CT 1054 and CT 1166, the "Lake of Fire" motif is first illustrated in spell BD 126 of the Book of the Dead. Commonly depicted as a pool flanked by braziers or baboons in the New Kingdom (c. 1550-1069 B.C.), a new element emerges in the Twenty-first Dynasty (c. 1069-945 B.C.): blackened, outstretched, and limp human figures are depicted inside of the lake in the funerary papyri of Bakenmut and Nestanebtawy. This thesis attempts to contextualize these human figures by examining the relevant iconographic, textual, archaeological, and historical evidence. The inclusion of these figures, …

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

China and other rapidly developing economies face the dual challenge of substantially increasing yields of cereal grains while at the same time reducing the very substantial environmental impacts of intensive agriculture. We used a model-driven integrated soil–crop system management approach to develop a maize production system that achieved mean maize yields of 13.0 t ha−1 on 66 on-farm experimental plots—nearly twice the yield of current farmers’ practices—with no increase in N fertilizer use. Such integrated soil–crop system management systems represent a priority for agricultural research and implementation, especially in rapidly growing economies.

Against Normative Nationalism, Ashish George Apr 2011

Against Normative Nationalism, Ashish George

Theses

Normative nationalism is the view that national boundaries represent more than an accumulation of tradition and history. Borders are morally significant insofar as the communities they create may appropriately be construed as composed of individuals with particular obligations to one another that they do not have to people outside the communities. I reject normative nationalism in this paper and seek to highlight the defects in criticisms of cosmopolitanism that presume or defend the legitimacy of normative nationalism. I utilize a distinction between demands of activity and demands of justification to point to some flaws in the normative nationalist framework preferred …
