Cyberostracism And Social Monitoring: Social Anxiety's Effects On Reactions To Exclusion And Inclusion Online, Claire E. Karlen, Jennifer R. Daniels Ph. D. Apr 2011

Cyberostracism And Social Monitoring: Social Anxiety's Effects On Reactions To Exclusion And Inclusion Online, Claire E. Karlen, Jennifer R. Daniels Ph. D.

Honors Projects

Previous research has shown that ostracism –the equivalence of exclusion in a social situation –improves social monitoring abilities – a natural practice by which individuals gather information through social cues about what is happening in their social worlds (Pickett, Gardner, & Knowles, 2004). Current knowledge on social anxiety, defined as a chronic fear of social situations that put one in the position of evaluation by others, describes hypersensitivity in those individuals in cases of social monitoring others (Barlow, 2002; Craske, 1999). The current study investigated how those two constructs interacted in a cyberostracism paradigm. After measuring their social anxiety levels, …

Neural Activity During Social Exclusion: An Exploratory Examination, Stephanie Khatcherian Apr 2011

Neural Activity During Social Exclusion: An Exploratory Examination, Stephanie Khatcherian

Honors Projects

Social exclusion has been brought to the forefront of media attention in recent years due to the recent tragedies like campus shootings and cyberbullying on social networking websites. In order to gain a deeper understanding of social exclusion, this study examined the relation between social exclusion and event-related brain potential (ERP) activity. ERPs were collected while participants completed three blocks of the Cyberball paradigm during which they experienced situations of social inclusion, exclusion, and re-inclusion. This well-established paradigm mimics actual social behavior experienced in real-world situations. Results showed larger N2 and smaller P3 amplitudes during throws where participants were excluded …

The Sick Person And Science: The Role Of Religion In Medicine And Modernity, Daniel J. Deweert Apr 2011

The Sick Person And Science: The Role Of Religion In Medicine And Modernity, Daniel J. Deweert

Honors Projects

The secularization thesis predicts that science will eventually render religion useless due to inherent incompatibilities. Modern discourses have created a similar conflict between scientific competence and more humanistic aspects of medicine. I will use the secularization thesis to analyze the unusual role of medicine as both a scientific discipline and a venture into the moral realm. Religion affects the way humans understand nature, which impacts the possibility of the scientific method as well as the role of the sick person in society. Though individuals have always been healers, institutionalizing healthcare through the creation of hospitals indicates a profound shift of …

Hoodoo Women To Robber Queens: Breaking The Bounds Of Ethnography And Female Subjectivity In Zora Neale Hurston's Circum-Caribbean Marvelous Real, Julie Lewis Lester Apr 2011

Hoodoo Women To Robber Queens: Breaking The Bounds Of Ethnography And Female Subjectivity In Zora Neale Hurston's Circum-Caribbean Marvelous Real, Julie Lewis Lester

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Throughout her career as an ethnographer, Zora Neale Hurston sought to capture the performances that linked African American folk communities of the coastal South to those she encountered in the Caribbean. The conjure woman of New Orleans and the Mambo priestess of Haitian Vodou exhibited performances that dramatized shared cultural and historical memory. These embodied performances connected women's lives across the circum-Caribbean diaspora. By situating the conjure woman in the context of the Marvelous Real, Hurston created a fictive site in which the conjurer acts as the interlocutor of women's recollected narratives and showed how identity could be shaped more …

Adherence Inhibition Of Cronobacter Sakazakii And Other Pathogens By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides, Plant Extracts, And Other Naturally Derived Molecules, Maria I. Quintero Apr 2011

Adherence Inhibition Of Cronobacter Sakazakii And Other Pathogens By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides, Plant Extracts, And Other Naturally Derived Molecules, Maria I. Quintero

Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

For most bacterial pathogens, adherence of the bacterium to the surface of the host cell tissue is a necessary first step for colonization and infection.  Agents that inhibit adherence, therefore, could be useful for preventing infections.  The goal of this research was to assess the anti-adherent activity of several food-grade prebiotic carbohydrates, plant extracts, and other naturally-derived molecules against enteric pathogens. First, the antiadherent effect of galactooligosaccharides (GOS), polydextrose (PDX), and a GOS-PDX blend was tested against two strains of Cronobacter “Enterobacter” sakazakii. When measured microscopically or by cultural methods, significant reductions in adherence (56% and 71%, respectively) of C. …

Pharmaceutically Active Compounds In Residential And Hospital Effluent, Municipal Wastewater, And The Rio Grande In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kathryn D. Brown Apr 2011

Pharmaceutically Active Compounds In Residential And Hospital Effluent, Municipal Wastewater, And The Rio Grande In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kathryn D. Brown

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

This project investigated: 1) the contribution of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) from residential and hospital effluent sources, 2) resultant concentrations of PhACs in the Albuquerque Southside Water Reclamation Plant (SWRP) raw influent and treated effluent, and 3) concentrations of PhACs in the Rio Grande, which receives SWRP effluent. PhACs present in surface waters have been shown to adversely impact organisms (Jobling et al., 1998) and, in the case of antibiotics, perhaps increase resistance to these drugs (Ash, 1999; Eichorst, 1999; Guardabassi et al, 1998; Sternes, 1999). In this study, ten sample sites were identified and samples collected and analyzed for …

Word 2010 Fonts Embedding Issues Resolved, Paul Royster, Apr 2011

Word 2010 Fonts Embedding Issues Resolved, Paul Royster,

Institutional Repository Information

Earlier this week I was “upgraded” from MS Office 2007 to MS Office 2010. In addition to the annoyance of hours spent reconstructing my former settings and toolbars for Word, I also discovered another issue: Word files saved as PDF refused to embed some fonts, specifically those deriving from Excel or other charts and graphs inserted into Word documents.

Previously, Word 2007 had interoperated with an Adobe Acrobat plug-in to properly convert such files and embed all fonts according to Acrobat’s preference settings. But for Word 2010, there is no working Acrobat plug-in, and Microsoft has proudly included their own …

Resorbable Polymer-Hydroxyapatite Composites For Bone Trauma Treatment: Synthesis And Properties, Troy E. Wiegand Apr 2011

Resorbable Polymer-Hydroxyapatite Composites For Bone Trauma Treatment: Synthesis And Properties, Troy E. Wiegand

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Contemporary therapies for hard tissue replacement involve allographs, where the donor and recipient are of the same species, or the use of xenogenic transplants.  Intraspecies materials are often in short supply and interspecies materials are subject to immunological barriers such as disease and tissue rejection.  Synthetic composites are unencumbered by these limitations.  Poly lactic acid (PLLA) and its copolymers have been used in medicine due to their ability to be resorbed by the body without adverse effects.  PLLA’s are currently most commonly used in resorbable sutures and gauzes, but there is increasing interest in using them in conjunction with hydroxyapatite …

Is Everybody Doing It? Sex In The College Freshman Female Population, Alexandra I. Zelin Apr 2011

Is Everybody Doing It? Sex In The College Freshman Female Population, Alexandra I. Zelin

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

Descriptive and injunctive norms have been shown to influence people’s perceptions of what actions are considered appropriate. Social norms research with sexual behaviors has shown that women perceived other women to be highly sexually active when, in reality, these norms were not accurate. We anticipated the same pattern of misperceptions and wanted to see if perceived number of partners and permissive attitudes of best friends and the typical freshman could predict women’s own number of partners controlling for their own attitudes. Participants included 156 heterosexual, freshman women from a liberal arts university. We found that women perceived their friends and …

Characterization Of A Blast Wave Device And Blast Wave Induced Traumatic Brain Injury In A Rat Model By Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Spectroscopy, Frank Corwin Apr 2011

Characterization Of A Blast Wave Device And Blast Wave Induced Traumatic Brain Injury In A Rat Model By Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Spectroscopy, Frank Corwin

Theses and Dissertations

Blast wave induced traumatic brain injury (bTBI) is a modality of injury that has come into prominence at the current time due to the large number of military and civilian personnel who have experienced the localized shock wave produced by explosive devices. The shock wave will travel concentrically outward from the explosive center, being absorbed and transmitted thru soft objects, such as tissue, and reflecting off stationary obstructions. Transmission and absorption in tissues can result in a number of physiological measureable injuries, the most common of which being what is frequently called “blast lung”. Blast lung involves the spalling effect …

Identification Of A Phytase Gene In Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Fei Dai, Long Qiu, Lingzhen Ye, Dezhi Wu, Meixue Zhou, Guoping Zhang

Publications

BACKGROUND: Endogenous phytase plays a crucial role in phytate degradation and is thus closely related to nutrient efficiency in barley products. The understanding of genetic information of phytase in barley can provide a useful tool for breeding new barley varieties with high phytase activity. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis for phytase activity was conducted using a doubled haploid population. Phytase protein was purified and identified by the LC-ESI MS/MS Shotgun method. Purple acid phosphatase (PAP) gene was sequenced and the position was compared with the QTL controlling phytase activity. A major QTL for phytase activity was mapped to …

Three Essays On Fdi In China, Mingming Pan Apr 2011

Three Essays On Fdi In China, Mingming Pan

College of Business: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) has contributed a great deal to China’s extraordinary growth by injecting capital into the economy, creating jobs, transferring technology and knowledge, enhancing trade, bringing in competition for local enterprises, improving the quality of local labor and intermediate goods suppliers, and connecting China’s gradually opening economy to the global market. For over a decade, China has been the second largest recipient of inward FDI in the world behind the United States. In 2009, China received $95 billion, which is 8.5% of the world’s total. However, the large amount of inward FDI has been unevenly distributed across Chinese …
