Adult Survivorship And Juvenile Recruitment In Populations Of Crawfish Frogs (Lithobates Areolatus), With Additional Consideration Of The Population Sizes Of Associated Pond Breeding Species, Vanessa C. Kinney May 2011

Adult Survivorship And Juvenile Recruitment In Populations Of Crawfish Frogs (Lithobates Areolatus), With Additional Consideration Of The Population Sizes Of Associated Pond Breeding Species, Vanessa C. Kinney

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Crawfish Frog populations have declined significantly in both the northeastern and southwestern portions of their range, and are listed as state endangered in both Iowa and Indiana. They are animals with a secretive nature, and comparatively little is know about their basic life history and natural history. To address this gap, and to obtain the information necessary to manage for this species in areas of decline, I studied the breeding biology of two Crawfish Frog populations during 2009 and 2010. Using data collected from drift fence and pitfall trap arrays around breeding wetlands, I estimated breeding population sizes, operational sex …

The Diabolic Metamorphosis And Its Images En Quevedo's Work, Nelly Banaru May 2011

The Diabolic Metamorphosis And Its Images En Quevedo's Work, Nelly Banaru

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The purpose of this study is to analyze the diabolic images in the work of Francisco de Quevedo from two perspectives: the terrifying mask and comic caricature. The diabolic spirit in Quevedo's work has several nuances that derive from the author's ideological belief: the tempting devil, the rebellious demon, the demon destroyer, the devil burlesque, as well as satanic things, nations, and characters. The study is based on the following works: la Pol?Ática de Dios, gobierno de Cristo y tiran?Áa de Satan? s, Los sue??os, La hora de todos, la Espa??a defendida, el Mundo caduco y desvar?Áos de la edad, …

Variation Of Spatial Strategies And The Telencephalon Of The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus) In Relation To Inferred Ecology, Peter Jung Park May 2011

Variation Of Spatial Strategies And The Telencephalon Of The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus) In Relation To Inferred Ecology, Peter Jung Park

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The importance of habitat type for the diversification of spatial strategies and telencephalon morphology was investigated in threespine stickleback fish (Gasterosteus aculeatus). Field-caught samples from sea-run (ancestral) and ecologically diverse freshwater (derived) populations were studied. Freshwater habitats included shallow, structurally complex lakes with benthic-feeding stickleback, and deeper, structurally simple lakes with limnetic (planktivorous) forms. While stickleback employ a variety of learning strategies to navigate within their environment, natural variation of spatial learning was studied because, unlike other strategies, it covaries with the size of a neuroanatomical structure. Spatial learning in relation to inferred ecology, ancestry, and experience was investigated using …

Reliance On Trial And Error Signal Derivation By Portia Africana, An Araneophagic Jumping Spider From East Africa, Robert R. Jackson, Ximena J. Nelson May 2011

Reliance On Trial And Error Signal Derivation By Portia Africana, An Araneophagic Jumping Spider From East Africa, Robert R. Jackson, Ximena J. Nelson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

All species from the jumping spider (Salticidae) genus Portia appear to be predators that specialize at preying on other spiders by invading webs and, through aggressive mimicry, gaining dynamic fine control over the resident spider's behavior. From previous research, there is evidence that P. fimbriata, P. labiata and P. schultzi derive signals by trial and error. Here, we demonstrate that P. africana is another species that uses a trial and error, or generate and test, algorithm when deriving the aggressive-mimicry signals that will be appropriate in different predator-prey encounters. We discuss the implications of these new findings and the findings …

Tickled To Death: The Consistency Of Tones In The Arts Of Eudora Welty And Flannery O'Connor, Ramona Dale Myers

Masters Theses

Eudora Welty and Flannery O'Connor are two southern authors who are well-known among American Literature enthusiasts. Although their overall tones and styles are not often very similar, they definitely had similar expectations of and explanations for how they wrote. Not only did Welty and O'Connor impart to the literary world a variety of fictional works, they also wrote essays, letters, and introductions which provide background information about their own framework of time and place, the relational conflicts within their fiction, and the importance of figurative language in literary art. Though they were sixteen years apart in age and came from …

Duration Analysis Of Technology Adoption Effects Of Dissemination Pathways: A Case Of 'Push-Pull' Technology For Control Of Striga Weeds And Stemborers In Western Kenya, A. W. Murage, G. Obare, J. Chianu, D. M. Amudavi, J. Pickett, Z. R. Khan

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Since its introduction, the 'push-pull' technology (PPT) has been promoted as an innovative approach for addressing yield losses caused by Striga weeds and stemborer infestations on farmers' maize fields in western Kenya. The technology has been disseminated through different pathways each of which might have different uptake enhancement capabilities. This study was concerned with how different dissemination pathways impacted on farmers' time to adoption while controlling the effects of selected socio-economic and regional factors. This assessment was necessary in order to recommend which dissemination pathway or combination of pathways that could provide an effective dissemination strategy that speed up adoption, …

Formation Of Intercellular Junctions During Secondary Neurulation In The Tail Bud Region Of Developing Chick Embryos, Selena Mae Losee May 2011

Formation Of Intercellular Junctions During Secondary Neurulation In The Tail Bud Region Of Developing Chick Embryos, Selena Mae Losee

Honors Program Theses

During secondary neurulation, the tail bud of the developing chick embryo undergoes a transition from unorganized mesenchymal cells to a structured epithelial tube. Cells undergoing this process must polarize and then assemble specific molecules that allow them to create intercellular junctions. Intercellular junctions contribute to the cells' ability to adhere, communicate with each other, or block the movement of molecules between neighboring cells. Previous studies have suggested cell-to-cell junctions play an important role in cavitation of the tail bud and in organizing the lumina that form. This study aimed to determine if tight junctions and gap junctions develop in this …

Vertebrate Taxonomic Composition, Species Diversity, And Paleoecology Of Two Pliocene Mid-Latitude, Inland-Basin Fossil Assemblages: Panaca Local Fauna (Lincoln County, Nevada) And Hagerman Local Fauna (Twin Falls County, Idaho), Vicki Lynn Meyers

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

I studied the sedimentology, species diversity, relative abundance, paleoenvironment, and paleoecology of the vertebrate fauna of the early Pliocene (Blancan Land Mammal Age) Panaca Formation of southeastern Nevada, and I compared these data with the slightly younger Hagerman fauna of south-central Idaho. The purpose of this study is to characterize the paleoecology and species diversity of mid-latitude inland basins during the Blancan Land Mammal Age, a time of climate change and immigrating taxa from Asia and South America. This study involved surface collecting and screenwashing of the Panaca Formation sediment in Meadow Valley, as well as a compilation of data …

Personality, Presence, And The Virtual Self: A Five-Factor Model Approach To Behavioral Analysis Within A Virtual Environment, Michael Patrick Mccreery May 2011

Personality, Presence, And The Virtual Self: A Five-Factor Model Approach To Behavioral Analysis Within A Virtual Environment, Michael Patrick Mccreery

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

For several decades, researchers have explored the existence of the virtual self, or digital embodiment of self found within an avatar. It was surmised that this new component of one’s overall identity not only existed in conjunction with the public and private persona, but was replete with the necessary physical and psychological characteristics that facilitate a broad range of cognitive, cultural, and socio-emotional outcomes found within a virtual environment (e.g., Second Life, World of Warcraft). However, little is known with regard to whether these characteristics do indeed impact behavioral outcomes. For this reason, this study employed an observational assessment method …

Effects Of Prey-Spider Odour On Intraspecific Interactions Of Araneophagic Jumping Spiders, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson May 2011

Effects Of Prey-Spider Odour On Intraspecific Interactions Of Araneophagic Jumping Spiders, Fiona R. Cross, Robert R. Jackson

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

An important prediction from game theory is that the value of a resource will influence the level to which an animal is willing to escalate during conflict with conspecific rivals. Here we use this prediction as the rationale for experiments aimed at determining whether escalation decisions made by predators are influenced by the presence of preferred prey. The predators we use are adult individuals of Portia fimbriata, a jumping-spider (Salticidae) species from Queensland (Australia). P. fimbriata is known to prefer other salticid species as prey and can detect the odour of Jacksonoides queenslandicus, this being an especially common salticid species …

Between Morality And Myth: A Parodic Visual Manifesto, Patricia J. Quilichini May 2011

Between Morality And Myth: A Parodic Visual Manifesto, Patricia J. Quilichini

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Acting on the belief that art communicates, that an image speaks all languages, these works were created as a visual manifesto responding satirically to the absurd way in which myths are elevated to the status of moral values. The photographic works created for this thesis challenge long held beliefs and emotions that associate sex with shame and guilt, and that grow out of the moral traditions we have inherited. Judeo-Christian traditions and religious beliefs have created widely unchallenged social/moral constructs, which regard sexuality and sexual awareness as sinful and woman as subservient to the moral authority constructed by men. I …

The Sun Also Sets: British Authors And The Death Of The Empire, Brian Butler May 2011

The Sun Also Sets: British Authors And The Death Of The Empire, Brian Butler

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

This thesis traces the decline of the British Empire through the perspectives of prominent British authors, beginning with Rudyard Kipling's Kim, which establishes the height of the British Empire. Thereafter, the Empire's decline is incisively chronicled through the various catalysts that contributed to the overall demise of the Empire: E.M Forster illustrates the impact of the introduction of British women into India in A Passage to India; George Orwell demonstrates the significance of burgeoning native dissent and the empowerment of the compradore class in Burma in Burmese Days; Anthony Burgess offers an exhaustive fictional meditation of the zenith of native …

Feasibility Of Integration Of Peanut Based Bio-Diesel Into A Mainstream Market, Dustin Hogan May 2011

Feasibility Of Integration Of Peanut Based Bio-Diesel Into A Mainstream Market, Dustin Hogan

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

There has been increased emphasis on alternate energy sources in recent years. This interest stems from diminishing supplies of fossil fuels combined with an ever-increasing global demand for energy. Biodiesel constitutes one such source of alternate energy. It is a renewable diesel fuel substitute that can be manufactured from a variety of naturally occurring oils and fats. Several methods of production have been tried and successfully implemented to develop biodiesel as a viable energy source. However, this research has been confined primarily within the auspices of a research laboratory. The mass appeal of biodiesel and its viability as a dominant …

Dynamic Postural Control In Individuals With Multiple Concussions, David Krazeise May 2011

Dynamic Postural Control In Individuals With Multiple Concussions, David Krazeise

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

There are an estimated 1.6 - 3.8 million sports-related concussions which occur in athletics annually in the United States; however, the actual rate may be higher, as many studies suggest that nearly half of the concussions that occur may go unreported. Recent evidence suggests life-long behavioral and cognitive impairments in individuals with multiple, usually 3 or more, concussions; however to date there has been limited assessment of motor impairments in this population. The transitional movement of gait initiation, literally the act of starting to walk, has effectively identified impairments in postural control in a wide range of neurologically impaired populations …

A Study Of The Biltmore Estate's Ramble: Researching Design Intent, Evaluating Change Over Time, And Proposing A Rehabilitation Plan, Owen Mclaughlin May 2011

A Study Of The Biltmore Estate's Ramble: Researching Design Intent, Evaluating Change Over Time, And Proposing A Rehabilitation Plan, Owen Mclaughlin

All Theses

The purpose of this study is to propose a historically appropriate rehabilitation plan for the Biltmore Estate's Ramble based upon Olmsted's original design intent. In order to ascertain Frederick Law Olmsted's original design intent for the Ramble, an extensive review of Victorian Era garden design, cultural landscapes, the U.S. Horticultural Industry, and possible design influences on Olmsted as he designed the site was performed. Using primary archival materials and secondary sources, the developmental history of the Ramble from 1890 to present was studied. From that work, design intent was determined by analyzing character-defining features from the original 1893 planting plan …
