Aligning Organizational Culture To Training And Development In A Spiritually Based Company, Jasmine Williams May 2011

Aligning Organizational Culture To Training And Development In A Spiritually Based Company, Jasmine Williams

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Drawing on research about the increasing number of organizations that label themselves Christian-based companies (Ibrahim, Rue, McDougal, & Greene, 1991), training and development, and spirituality in the workplace, this study investigates the ways in which the Chick-fil-A© corporation aligns their training and development practices toward achievement of their corporate purpose. The corporate purpose of Chick-fil-A© as recorded on the company‘s website is ―to glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come into contact with Chick-fil-A©‖ (Chick-fil-A©, 2010). The researcher seeks to determine whether the organizational …

Place [For] The Children, Heather Hudson May 2011

Place [For] The Children, Heather Hudson

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Due to changing social and economic trends, enrollment in child care has become customary for the large majority of children under the age of five in the U.S. Although the importance of the early years has slowly begun to gain more recognition, early childhood development and education is still not viewed as the imperative societal issue that it demands. As the widespread environment for raising children in the U.S. has gradually moved from the informal atmosphere of the home to the formal settings of a child care center, the impact of the built environment on children’s development has often been …

Town-Gown Relations At Providence College: Perspectives And Interactions Between Students And The Local Community, Joe Paola May 2011

Town-Gown Relations At Providence College: Perspectives And Interactions Between Students And The Local Community, Joe Paola

Global Studies Student Scholarship

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze and comment on the relationships that exist between Providence College students and the local Smith Hill‐Elmhurst community. In conducting my research I concentrated mainly on the nuanced perceptions that the students and the local residents have of each other. My main interest was to see how the students defined themselves in relation to the outside community, and in discovering how much their relationship is based upon these perceptions. At the same time, I also aimed to find out what the locals’ opinions were on the place of the students; namely, if they …

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Reduces Dendritic Spine Density Across Sensory Cortices, Francis Oppong May 2011

Prenatal Alcohol Exposure Reduces Dendritic Spine Density Across Sensory Cortices, Francis Oppong

Theses and Dissertations

Dendritic spines are the major site of excitatory synapses in cortex, and factors that reduce dendritic spine numbers will produce serious cortical processing deficits, such as has been demonstrated for mental retardation and other psychiatric disorders. Prenatal alcohol exposure also has detrimental effects on brain development that lead to Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), which results in reduction of dendritic spine numbers in the hippocampus, prefrontal cortex and somatosensory cortex. FASD also is associated with temporal processing disorders involving sequential auditory stimuli that would be processed in auditory cortical areas. However, it is unknown if the reduction of spine density …

Intermodal | Multimodal, Adam J. Andrews May 2011

Intermodal | Multimodal, Adam J. Andrews

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

The intent is to confront waste on both a global and local level using architecture to engage and educate the public. Global waste, in this case, is defined as intermodal containers and local waste is defined as municipally collected solid waste. I intend to show through my designs that architecture need not be the source of yet more energy use and material waste. Instead, design can be the vehicle through which we begin to lessen our impact on Planet Earth by reusing the materials already at hand to create architecture and energy.

A waste to energy approach [both architectural and …

Inciting Insight: Situating The Arts In Higher Education, Nancy Cantor May 2011

Inciting Insight: Situating The Arts In Higher Education, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

This morning, after two very lively days of discussion, I’m glad to have a chance to address the "nuts and bolts" of models and metrics for situating the arts in higher education. This matters profoundly because the arts already suffuse our society and culture as sources of connectedness, continuity and meaning. I think what Susan Sontag said of photography is true of all the arts, that they are the "arm of consciousness," and that they "make up and thicken the environment we recognize as modern."

Supplemental Assignments To Increase The Retention Of Knowledge For Biology I And Ii Lecture, Krystyn Vitale

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Supplemental assignments for Biology I and II lectures were designed to increase the understanding of important biology concepts. Topics from each lecture, and frequently misunderstood details from that topic, were chosen as the concepts for each assignment. The questions posed allow students to process the information step-by-step and form a conclusion from their piece-wise work. This format allows students to foster their critical thinking skills and increase their retention of the knowledge learned through problem solving sessions.

Life In The Open Air: The Persistence Of Outdoor Air Treatment For Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients In America From The Industrial Revolution To The 1950s, Tara Darlene Mastrangelo May 2011

Life In The Open Air: The Persistence Of Outdoor Air Treatment For Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients In America From The Industrial Revolution To The 1950s, Tara Darlene Mastrangelo

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This thesis explores the persistent use of outdoor air as a treatment for tuberculosis, particularly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The focus of my paper differs from other scholarly works on tuberculosis in that it assumes the connections between climatology and the sanatoria/home cure movements are strong enough to warrant combining them under the term “outdoor air treatment,” rather than categorizing them as two distinct methods . Based on this premise, my paper explores the ways in which outdoor air treatment outlasted many of the changes to society which occurred during the late 19th and early 20th …

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Social Influence: An Empirical Comparison Of Two Theoretical Models, Chauncy Thomas Brinton May 2011

The Relationship Between Self-Esteem And Social Influence: An Empirical Comparison Of Two Theoretical Models, Chauncy Thomas Brinton

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The relationship between social influence and self-esteem was examined in two studies from the lens of two different theoretical approaches, Leary’s sociometer theory and Henriques’ Unified Theory of Psychology (HUTP). Whereas sociometer theory contends that self-esteem functions completely as a barometer of relational value, HUTP posits that human self-esteem should also be significantly influenced by the cultural context, especially the extent to which self-enhancement is justified. This conception leads to the prediction that socialization will influence self-esteem, after controlling for social influence. Specifically, individuals socialized to self-enhance should demonstrate higher levels of self-esteem after controlling for social influence. Two studies …

Finding Balance: School-Based Yoga Programs For The Prevention And Reduction Of Anxiety, Jessica Dawn Aaron

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

Children and adolescents experience anxiety to varying degrees; levels vary from healthy and motivating to clinically elevated and debilitating. At present, anxiety disorders are most commonly treated through psychopharmacology and cognitive behavioral therapy. This thesis contains a brief literature review of these existing treatments, followed by a presentation of the emerging support for mindfulness-based yoga programs, highlighting a particular opportunity for school-based mental health providers. Keywords: yoga, anxiety, wellness, prevention, school-based, holistic care.

The Increasing Rate Of Undergraduate Male Attrition: What The Men Tell Us. A Qualitative Case Study., Monika Neelam Kushwaha

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The current study explores the factors that may contribute to undergraduate male attrition and ways of improving retention at James Madison University (JMU) using qualitative case study methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five men who were currently enrolled at JMU, six men who had previously been enrolled at JMU but who had left before completing a degree, and two university administrators who work closely with students at risk of dropping out. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. They were analyzed using QSR’s N-Vivo 9, a qualitative data management software package. Themes and sub-themes emerged around two major categories: factors that …

Integrating Multimodal Composition Techniques In First-Year Writing Courses: Theory And Praxis, Bret Zawilski May 2011

Integrating Multimodal Composition Techniques In First-Year Writing Courses: Theory And Praxis, Bret Zawilski

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The body of this thesis seeks to explore the costs and benefits of instituting a multimodal composition pedagogy within first-year writing. Contested definitions of multimodality and multimedia provide a background for delving into the printed-word dominated discourse, where image, sound, and animation are all placed in a subordinate position relative to that of the written word. Within, many theories of multimodality and composition pedagogy are placed in contrast with one another in an attempt to discern connections in the body of already published theoretical material. The primary method of data collection for this document involved the investigation of secondary sources …

A Poultry All-Hazard Threat, Vulnerability, And Capability Assessment With Rockingham County Fire Rescue., Daniel Robert Dales May 2011

A Poultry All-Hazard Threat, Vulnerability, And Capability Assessment With Rockingham County Fire Rescue., Daniel Robert Dales

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Agriculture is argued to be one of our most critical infrastructures and is vital to human health and survivability. Agriculture is economically important in Virginia as it provides over 350,000 jobs and generates $55 billion annually (Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). This high criticality lends to significant areas of vulnerability in each sector of agriculture. Rockingham County is of particular importance as the top agriculturally producing county in the state and is ranked 5th in the nation for poultry sales (2007 Census of Agriculture). The desire to uphold this high production calls for a need to better understand …

A System Dynamics Approach Towards Assessing Posidonia Oceanica Habitat, Justine Schembri May 2011

A System Dynamics Approach Towards Assessing Posidonia Oceanica Habitat, Justine Schembri

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Posidonia oceanica habitat is one of the most important coastal shallow water habitats in the Mediterranean region and provides highly valuable and varied ecological services such as supporting high species diversity, protecting against coastal erosion, and sequestering carbon. Posidonia oceanica habitat is declining as a result of a multitude of converging pressures, both natural and anthropogenic, in the coastal zone. The slow rate at which Posidonia oceanica meadows undergo recovery, in contrast to the rapid dynamics that bring about their decline, is consequently of great concern. The need to proactively manage this valuable resource must be met in order that …

Analysis Of The Mechanism By Which Ykl-40 Promotes Glioma Cell Migration, Bahiya Osrah May 2011

Analysis Of The Mechanism By Which Ykl-40 Promotes Glioma Cell Migration, Bahiya Osrah

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis elucidates the crucial role of YKL-40 in enhancing glioma cell migration and invasion in vitro. Increased levels of YKL-40 are specifically associated with the increased invasive capacity of glioma multiforme (GBM) tumors and lower survival rate of GBM patients. In order to examine the effects of YKL-40 on the migration and invasion of GBM cells, we overexpressed YKL-40 in three different glioma cell lines. The overexpression of YKL-40 significantly enhanced glioma cells migration and invasion in vitro and also increased ERK phosphorylation, which is believed to enhance glioma cell survival, and invasiveness. Although receptors for YKL-40 are still …

Age-Related Structural And Functional Changes Of The Mouse Eye: Role Of Intraocular Pressure And Genotype, Tsung-Han Chou May 2011

Age-Related Structural And Functional Changes Of The Mouse Eye: Role Of Intraocular Pressure And Genotype, Tsung-Han Chou

Open Access Dissertations

The murine eye naturally undergoes post-natal changes in eye size. This dissertation quantifies longitudinal structural and functional changes in control mice (C57BL/6J (B6), D2-Gpnmb+/SjJ) and in DBA/2J (D2) mice, which spontaneously develop elevated intraocular pressure (IOP). IOP elevation results in abnormal eye elongation, retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness thinning and retinal ganglion cell (RGC) dysfunction and demise resembling human glaucoma. I measured structural changes with Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), and RGC function with Pattern Electroretinogram (PERG). I also developed and refined provocation approaches (IOP elevation with changes in body posture; metabolic load with flickering light) to probe susceptibility of …

A New Paradigm: Brazilian Catholic Eco-Justice Activism In The Neoliberal Age, Lena R. Connor May 2011

A New Paradigm: Brazilian Catholic Eco-Justice Activism In The Neoliberal Age, Lena R. Connor

Environmental Analysis Program Mellon Student Summer Research Reports

This paper analyzes how traditional liberation theology in Brazil has been adapted in the neoliberal age to encompass ecological goals and rhetoric. In this research report, I first examine the work of prominent Brazilian ecotheologians, Ivone Gebara and Leonardo Boff. I then look into the applications of such ecological liberation theology in Catholic activism in Brazil, focusing on the role of religious advocacy in dam controversies, land reform, and mining.

Autumn Leaflets: A Collection Of Poetry, Kayla I. Shown-Dean May 2011

Autumn Leaflets: A Collection Of Poetry, Kayla I. Shown-Dean

Student Theses and Dissertations

This collection of poetry was inspired by Johnny Mercer's "The Autumn Leaves." Major themes of the collection include: the unity of nature, unification of all things, the role of Christians in the secular world, and the releasing of the past. While the majority of these poems are written in free verse, occasionally the author implements formal verse such as diamante, limerick, and experimentations with the sonnet and sestina. "Autumn Leaflets" is sorted into four different titled sections: "The Falling Leaves," "Of Red and Gold," "The Sunburned Hands," and "Old Winter's Song." Each section receives its title from Mercer's lyrics and …

Preliminary Analysis Of Thermally Induced Condensed Phase Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cobalt Chloride And Cobalt Bromide With Electropositive Metals, Ragini Kamineni May 2011

Preliminary Analysis Of Thermally Induced Condensed Phase Electron Transfer Reactions Of Cobalt Chloride And Cobalt Bromide With Electropositive Metals, Ragini Kamineni

Student Theses and Dissertations

A non-isothermal method using TG/DTA instrument have been used to find the thermal decomposition and dehydration studies of Cobalt Chloride and Cobalt Bromide with electropositive metals like Cd, Fe, Cr, Zn and Mn under argon gas flow. The TG/DTA plots reveal that there is loss of approximately six moles of water from CoCl2.6H2 O and TG/DTA plot of CoBr2 did not show any peaks and we are uncertain on thermal decomposition of CoBr2. The change in enthalpy (ΔH) of Cobalt Chloride with metals Cd and Mn was calculated by using standard conditions because JANAF …
