An Artless Dream, Lauren Abrams May 2011

An Artless Dream, Lauren Abrams

Theses and Dissertations

The brain begins collecting and categorizing information from the moment we are born. It can identify patterns and direct our choices long before we are consciously aware of it. Even when we become aware of the deliberate choice we often don’t know why we are making it. It is striking how much of what we do is dictated subconsciously by our brains. While I am not a scientist and I don’t aim to research the brain, I think it is interesting to think about how this effects what I do in the studio. I am a product of the world …

Miscue Analysis: Toward A Parsimonious Approach To Assessment Of Oral Reading Errors In The Classroom, Tera Bradley Traylor May 2011

Miscue Analysis: Toward A Parsimonious Approach To Assessment Of Oral Reading Errors In The Classroom, Tera Bradley Traylor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Several informal, classroom-based methods currently exist for evaluating reading performance, but the daily demands teachers face require that assessment be as efficient and effective as possible. The purpose of this study was to examine two different approaches to analyzing oral reading-- assessment of word recognition ability and miscue analysis-- in search of a parsimonious approach to children's reading assessment in a sample of second-grade children. Children's word reading was assessed through administration of context-free word lists, and oral reading miscues were gathered from reading of connected text. The results suggested that substitution miscues and self-correction of errors were significantly correlated …

Understanding Resort Marketing Practices, Eric Brey, David K. Klenosky, Xinran Lehto, Alastair Morrison

Journal of Tourism Insights

Effective marketing plays an integral role in the success of hospitality and tourism businesses. While research has examined many aspects of the hospitality and tourism industry, the marketing of destination resorts has been largely ignored. This study addresses this gap by reporting the insights obtained from interviews conducted with North American resort marketing executives to assess their views on current resort marketing trends and practices. Based on a content analysis of this interview data, 18 topics were identified and organized into five categories: channels, relationships, targeting, technology and function. This paper provides a discussion of each topic, overviews implications of …

Evidence For Opsin-Based Photosensitivity In Coral Larvae, Benjamin M. Mason May 2011

Evidence For Opsin-Based Photosensitivity In Coral Larvae, Benjamin M. Mason

Open Access Dissertations

Photosensitive behaviors and circadian rhythms are well documented in reef-building corals and their larvae, yet photoreceptive structures and opsins have not been described in these organisms. Here I provide evidence for red sensitivity in several species of coral larvae. Behavioral experiments with two Caribbean corals, Porites astreoides and Acropora palmata demonstrated that larvae settle and metamorphose at a greater frequency on red substrata than on similar substrata of other colors. Attachment to red substrata was not observed when larvae were maintained in the dark, suggesting that red sensitivity was responsible for the observed behavior. Extracellular recordings confirm photosensitivity and indicate …

Complete Genome Sequence Of Mycoplasma Suis And Insights Into Its Biology And Adaption To An Erythrocyte Niche, Ana Ms Guimaraes, Andrea P. Santos, Phillip Sanmiguel, Thomas Walter, Jorge Timenetsky, Joanne Messick

Department of Comparative Pathobiology Faculty Publications

Mycoplasma suis, the causative agent of porcine infectious anemia, has never been cultured in vitro and mechanisms by which it causes disease are poorly understood. Thus, the objective herein was to use whole genome sequencing and analysis of M. suis to define pathogenicity mechanisms and biochemical pathways. M. suis was harvested from the blood of an experimentally infected pig. Following DNA extraction and construction of a paired end library, whole-genome sequencing was performed using GS-FLX (454) and Titanium chemistry. Reads on paired-end constructs were assembled using GS De Novo Assembler and gaps closed by primer walking; assembly was validated by …

The Absent Artist: Muteness And Fiction In Recent Painting, Costa Michael Kennedy May 2011

The Absent Artist: Muteness And Fiction In Recent Painting, Costa Michael Kennedy

Theses and Dissertations

For the written component of my thesis, I am attempting to make sense of a current strain in contemporary painting which, generally speaking, tends towards reduction, humble materiality, lack of overt, didactic critique, and a scholarly interest in outmoded or overlooked art historical movements and figures. These are tendencies with which, as a painter, I feel both affinities and differences. Rather than rigidly define a “movement,” I will identify prevalent modes but also highlight individual strategies. I will begin by outlining some of the basic, underlying problems in painting today. I will then examine, as case studies, three young painters—Josephine …

Live Attitude, Keith Jason Varadi May 2011

Live Attitude, Keith Jason Varadi

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis serves as an open-ended document of a young artist attempting to sift through his accumulated opinions in order to figure out what it means to accept complicity in the face of auspicious authority, rapid turnover, and paper-thin irony and nihilism, while still striving to stake a claim at something worth making and defending.

Immigrant Non-Profit Organizations: How Do They Serve Their Constituencies?, Gustavo A. Amaya May 2011

Immigrant Non-Profit Organizations: How Do They Serve Their Constituencies?, Gustavo A. Amaya

Research Papers

Immigration has become one of the most important topics in the United States. According to the Census Bureau (2011), Hispanics are officially the largest minority group in the nation. This has a direct impact on new legislation and federal, state and local government decision making. The consequences of these actions directly influence the way public administrators do their job. To better understand the changes and its consequences, all these levels of government must understand the situation and all factors involved to the best of their capabilities. This research paper explores the services a group of Mexican immigrant non-profit organizations provide …

Role Of Mutations In The Essential Light Chain (Elc) Of Myosin In Familial Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (Fhc), Alexander Raytman May 2011

Role Of Mutations In The Essential Light Chain (Elc) Of Myosin In Familial Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (Fhc), Alexander Raytman

Open Access Theses

Force generation and the ability of the heart muscle to contract and correspondingly to beat depends upon multiple interactions between myosin and actin-tropomyosin-troponin, the key proteins of the contractile apparatus. The myosin molecule consists of two heavy chains and two types of light chains, two essential (ELC) and two regulatory (RLC) light chains. We hypothesize that mutations in myosin ELC may affect the ability of myosin to bind to actin, thus producing structurally and/or functionally abnormal sarcomeres effecting heart muscle contraction and relaxation. We believe that this pathological process underlies the basis of Familial Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (FHC), a genetic disorder …

Volumetric Analysis Of Brain Mri For Alzheimer’S Disease, Qian Shen May 2011

Volumetric Analysis Of Brain Mri For Alzheimer’S Disease, Qian Shen

Open Access Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the most common cause of dementia in the elderly, is a gradually progressive degenerative neurological disorder that is characterized by increasing cognitive impairment, characteristic degenerative pathology and brain atrophy. Studies have shown that the progression of AD pathology in the brain develops in a predictable pattern and the pathological changes that take place in brain begin at the microscopic level long before the first signs of memory loss. Structural Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), which has exceptional soft tissue contrast and detailed resolution, is the best way to noninvasively examine changes which occur early in the course of …

Theses

The project " An investigation of facial rigging for animation " explores possible rigging methods for developing a stylistic 3D head that is both expressive and mimics realistic movements with animation. This project is broken into two parts: the modeling and rigging stage where most of the research and exploration takes place, and the animation stage that presents the final result of the rigging exploration. The first stage of this project explores developing an animatable head that resembles all basic emotions of the human face. The main focus of the project is on the formation of joint deformers and blendshapes, …

Craft Cyborg, Laina Seay May 2011

Craft Cyborg, Laina Seay

Theses and Dissertations

By merging the ancient associations that clay has with the human form and prosthetic science I question the relevancy and role of the human body in the future. As prosthetics heighten the awareness of the body through absence these additive limbs further this relevancy by presence. With greater advances in genetic engineering and plastic surgery biology will no longer dominate and these ridged clay extensions could become flesh.

Quorum Sensing In Archaea, Charles Mackin May 2011

Quorum Sensing In Archaea, Charles Mackin

Honors Scholar Theses

Bacteria coordinate cell density dependent behaviors by communicating through chemical intermediaries in a process called quorum sensing. In a bacterial culture, individual cells will constitutively produce signal molecules, termed autoinducers, and export them into the environment. When the concentration of autoinducers reaches a threshold, the cells sense that they are in a specific situation, which requires the upregulation of certain genes. This upregulation causes the bacteria to produce proteins that allow them to take part in a coordinated population-wide behavior.

In bacteria that are naturally competent, or capable of importing DNA from the environment, the expression of competence genes is …

Charlotte Brontë'S Villette And Sigmund Freud's Dora: An Analysis Of A Case Of Hysteria: Lucy Snowe's Narrative Ambiguity As Dora's Self-Analysis, Sarah Madeline Brokaw May 2011

Charlotte Brontë'S Villette And Sigmund Freud's Dora: An Analysis Of A Case Of Hysteria: Lucy Snowe's Narrative Ambiguity As Dora's Self-Analysis, Sarah Madeline Brokaw

Honors Scholar Theses

Critics of Charlotte Brontë’s “Villette” note that Lucy Snowe, the mysterious and provocative narrator, fulfills two initiatives: providing interpretation through her obsessive observant analysis of other characters, and provoking the reader’s interpretation in the reader by her deliberate omission of any information pertaining to her past and unexplained lapses in intelligence and sanity. “Villette” is often associated Sigmund Freud’s “Dora: An Analysis of a Case of Hysteria” because of the similarity between the two young, likely traumatized, female protagonists and the possibility of mapping characters from one narrative onto the other. However, the complex interaction between the two texts allows …

Design And Bio-Production Of A Nanoparticle Avian Influenza Vaccine, Kashif N. Ather May 2011

Design And Bio-Production Of A Nanoparticle Avian Influenza Vaccine, Kashif N. Ather

Honors Scholar Theses

Influenza is one of the most common diseases in the world and the cause for numerous deaths every year. The primary method of combating the disease is the influenza vaccine, which is produced by inoculating chicken eggs with inactivated virus. An emerging solution is to use Self-Assembling Polypeptide Nanoparticles (SAPN) to elicit an immune response in the body, rather than using inactivated viruses. This project focuses on the synthesis, purification, and refolding of two peptide constructs, BN5C and S43, which are specific protein sequences that under the right conditions will refold into the 3-dimensional structures necessary for producing an immune …
