Tchaikovsky And The Russian Five‘S Contemporary Relevance: How Selected Works Of 19th Century Russian Composers Have Influenced Popular Culture Of The West, Cameron Carr May 2011

Tchaikovsky And The Russian Five‘S Contemporary Relevance: How Selected Works Of 19th Century Russian Composers Have Influenced Popular Culture Of The West, Cameron Carr

Senior Theses

As a culture, we often use music to accent events that would otherwise not need them. Many of these events utilize what is considered ‘classical’ music, and within the Classical Music world a select few works get copious amounts of play time, and thus get heavily imprinted in our minds’ ear. Certain correlations between these situations and musical phrases have become so ingrained in our culture that it is almost alien to not have them be together.

Many of the works that are implanted in our culture come out of a specific location and time: the Romantic era in Russia. …

The Public Choice Problem In Corporate Law: Corporate Social Responsibility After Citizens United, David Yosifon May 2011

The Public Choice Problem In Corporate Law: Corporate Social Responsibility After Citizens United, David Yosifon

Faculty Publications

The Supreme Court held in Citizens United v. Federal Elections Commission (2010) that the First Amendment forbids Congress from restricting the political speech of corporations. While corporate theory did little to inform the Court’s thinking in Citizens United, this Article argues that the holding in Citizens United requires us to rethink corporate theory. The shareholder primacy norm in American corporate governance relies on the assumption that corporations can be restrained from influencing external governmental operations. We can enjoy the efficiencies generated by shareholder primacy in corporate governance, mainstream corporate theorists have long argued, because we can rely on external regulation …

Planting Seeds For An Improved Agrifood System? Linking The Aims Of The Alternative Agrifood Movement To Executive Action In The First Two Years Of The Obama Administration, K. Glowa, Sarah Carvill, Costanza Rampini May 2011

Planting Seeds For An Improved Agrifood System? Linking The Aims Of The Alternative Agrifood Movement To Executive Action In The First Two Years Of The Obama Administration, K. Glowa, Sarah Carvill, Costanza Rampini

Faculty Publications, Environmental Studies

This paper uses several case studies to look at the dialogic relationship between the Obama administration and the alternative agrifood movement. We evaluate the case studies based on criteria developed from the agroecology literature and literature on food security, agrarianism, and the alternative agrifood movement as a whole. Additionally we compare the policy tools utilized and the funding levels of each of the cases. Our findings suggest that the Obama administration is committed to tackling issues of food security and promoting the well-being of small- and mid-scale farmers and their local agrifood economies. Deconsolidation of large agribusiness, equitable trade, and …

The acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS)-causing lentiviruses human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) effectively evade host immunity and, once established, infections with these viruses are only rarely controlled by immunological mechanisms. However, the initial establishment of infection in the first few days after mucosal exposure, before viral dissemination and massive replication, may be more vulnerable to immune control. Here we report that SIV vaccines that include rhesus cytomegalovirus (RhCMV) vectors establish indefinitely persistent, high-frequency, SIV-specific effector memory T-cell (T(EM)) responses at potential sites of SIV replication in rhesus macaques and stringently control highly pathogenic SIV(MAC239) infection early after …

Mac Os X Forensics: Password Discovery, David Primeaux, Robert Dahlberg, Kamnab Keo, Stephen Larson, B. Pennell, K. Sherman

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

OS X provides a password-rich environment in which passwords protect OS X resources and perhaps many other resources accessed through OS X. Every password an investigator discovers in an OS X environment has the potential for use in discovering other such passwords, and any discovered passwords may also be useful in other aspects of an investigation, not directly related to the OS X environment. This research advises the use of multiple attack vectors in approaching the password problem in an OS X system, including the more generally applicable non-OS X-specific techniques such as social engineering or well-known password cracking techniques …

Fitness Of Diabrotica Barberi, Diabrotica Longicornis, And Their Hybrids (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Laura A. Campbell, Lance J. Meinke May 2011

Fitness Of Diabrotica Barberi, Diabrotica Longicornis, And Their Hybrids (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), Laura A. Campbell, Lance J. Meinke

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Diabrotica barberi Smith & Lawrence, the northern corn rootworm, and Diabrotica longicornis (Say) (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), are currently recognized as closely related chrysomelid species. Hybridization has been proposed to occur between them, although the viability of hybrids has never been tested. The objective of this study was to assess life-history parameters of D. barberi,D. longicornis, and their hybrids under laboratory conditions to examine the potential for field hybridization. D. barberi and D. longicornis were collected in allopatry and were used to create lab colonies. Parental species were crossed to obtain F1 hybrids, F2 hybrids, and backcrosses to either parental species. …

A Practitioners Guide To The Forensic Investigation Of Xbox 360 Gaming Consoles, Ashley L. Podhradsky, Rob D’Ovidio, Cindy Casey

Annual ADFSL Conference on Digital Forensics, Security and Law

Given the ubiquitous nature of computing, individuals now have nearly 24-7 access to the internet. People are not just going online through traditional means with a PC anymore, they are now frequently using nontraditional devices such as cell phones, smart phones, and gaming consoles. Given the increased use of gaming consoles for online access, there is also an increased use of gaming consoles to commit criminal activity. The digital forensic community has been tasked with creating new approaches for forensically analyzing gaming consoles. In this research paper the authors demonstrate different tools, both commercial and open source, available to forensically …

Biofuel Economics In A Setting Of Multiple Objectives & Unintended Consequences, William K. Jaeger, Thorsten M. Egelkraut May 2011

Biofuel Economics In A Setting Of Multiple Objectives & Unintended Consequences, William K. Jaeger, Thorsten M. Egelkraut

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper examines biofuels from an economic perspective and evaluates the merits of promoting biofuel production in the context of the policies’ multiple objectives, life-cycle implications, pecuniary externalities, and other unintended consequences. The policy goals most often cited are to reduce fossil fuel use and to lower greenhouse gas emissions. But the presence of multiple objectives and various indirect effects complicates normative evaluation. To address some of these complicating factors, we look at several combinations of policy alternatives that achieve the same set of incremental gains along the two primary targeted policy dimensions, making it possible to compare the costs …

Every Day Is Earth Day: Using A Latent Curriculum To Develop An Ethic Of Sustainability Among College Students, Robert Longwell-Grice, Rebecca Nordensten

New York Journal of Student Affairs

As educators, colleges are in a unique position to inform future leaders about environmental issues. This paper reviews a specific plan for developing an ethic of care for the environment in students, based on the work of Aldo Leopold. The plan focuses on the latent curriculum, and argues that divisions of student affairs are best suited to develop it.

BACKGROUND:

Microinversions are cytologically undetectable inversions of DNA sequences that accumulate slowly in genomes. Like many other rare genomic changes (RGCs), microinversions are thought to be virtually homoplasy-free evolutionary characters, suggesting that they may be very useful for difficult phylogenetic problems such as the avian tree of life. However, few detailed surveys of these genomic rearrangements have been conducted, making it difficult to assess this hypothesis or understand the impact of microinversions upon genome evolution.

RESULTS:

We surveyed non-coding sequence data from a recent avian phylogenetic study and found substantially more microinversions than expected based upon prior information about vertebrate …

Application Of Post-Column Reaction To Speciate Disinfectants And Disinfection By-Products, Patricia L. Ranaivo May 2011

Application Of Post-Column Reaction To Speciate Disinfectants And Disinfection By-Products, Patricia L. Ranaivo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Two methods, independent of each other, are developed and optimized separately. Both methods use the same approach, the use of chromatography technique followed by post-column reaction for the analysis of haloacetic acids and chloramine compounds. The first method, post-column reaction ion chromatograohy analyzer with internal standardization (IS-PCR-IC), is optimized to determine nine haloacetic acids (HAAs) in drinking water, operating in near real-time. The IS-PCR-IC method requires a minimal sample preparation that consists of passing water samples through cartridges to remove chloride and sulfate ions and introducing the pretreated samples into the on-line channel of the automated instrumentation. Two sets of water …
