Store-Operated Ca(2+) Entry (Soce) Contributes To Normal Skeletal Muscle Contractility In Young But Not In Aged Skeletal Muscle, Angela M. Thornton, Xiaoli Zhao, Noah Weisleder, Leticia S. Brotto, Sylvain Bougoin, Thomas M. Nosek, Michael B. Reid, Brian Hardin, Zui Pan, Jianjie Ma, Jerome Parness, Marco Brotto

Physiology Faculty Publications

Muscle atrophy alone is insufficient to explain the significant decline in contractile force of skeletal muscle during normal aging. One contributing factor to decreased contractile force in aging skeletal muscle could be compromised excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling, without sufficient available Ca(2+) to allow for repetitive muscle contractility, skeletal muscles naturally become weaker. Using biophysical approaches, we previously showed that store-operated Ca(2+) entry (SOCE) is compromised in aged skeletal muscle but not in young ones. While important, a missing component from previous studies is whether or not SOCE function correlates with contractile function during aging. Here we test the contribution of extracellular …

Use Of Imaging Biomarkers To Assess Perfusion And Glucose Metabolism In The Skeletal Muscle Of Dystrophic Mice, Nabeel Ahmad, Ian Welch, Robert Grange, Jennifer Hadway, Savita Dhanvantari, David Hill, Ting-Yim Lee, Lisa M Hoffman

Robarts Imaging Publications

BACKGROUND: Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe neuromuscular disease that affects 1 in 3500 boys. The disease is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration that results from mutations in or loss of the cytoskeletal protein, dystrophin, from the glycoprotein membrane complex, thus increasing the susceptibility of contractile muscle to injury. To date, disease progression is typically assessed using invasive techniques such as muscle biopsies, and while there are recent reports of the use of magnetic resonance, ultrasound and optical imaging technologies to address the issue of disease progression and monitoring therapeutic intervention in dystrophic mice, our study aims to validate …

The Search For Hamilton, Eric Gossett

ACMS Conference Proceedings 2011

In July and August of 2009 my wife and I went on a four-week trip to Scotland and Ireland. We would be visiting Dublin, so I decided that we should visit the famous bridge where William Rowan Hamilton carved the equations for the quaternions. The task was not as simple as I had assumed. This paper gives some details of the search.

Seven Seas Without, Ambereen Siddiqui Jun 2011

Seven Seas Without, Ambereen Siddiqui

Masters Theses

In my work I explore dislocation within a diasporic experience. I use personal and familial accounts of migration, assimilation and reverse culture shock to examine and add to the collective narratives that underlie national as well as individual identities. In reconciling my own sense of loss in having moved away from Pakistan, I appropriate histories, recreate memories and envision futures to mould the present. Investigations of personal experiences inform an analysis of the larger social, political and historical contexts. In my practice I use video, animation and new media technologies to “re-view” archives. My sources include audio and text from …

A Multilevel, Posture-Based Model For Motor Control In Simulation And Robotic Applications, Divya A. Gunasekaran

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

This paper presents a multilevel, posture-based motor control model intended to plan collision-free movements in a 3D environment while maintaining computationally efficiency and accurately imitating human and primate motor function. Our model is a comprehensive approach that addresses the storage and lookup of postures and movements, path planning and the generation of new movements, and learning with experience. We demonstrate the functionality and computational advantages of the model through preliminary testing on a humanoid robot.

Antibacterial Activity Of Conjugated Electrolytes, Thomas S. Corbitt Jun 2011

Antibacterial Activity Of Conjugated Electrolytes, Thomas S. Corbitt

Chemistry and Chemical Biology ETDs

A series of water soluble, cationic, anionic and zwitterionic conjugated polyelectrolytes (CPEs) with main chains based on an arylene ethynylene repeat unit structure with tetraalkylammonium and/or alkylsulfonate side groups were found to exhibit significant antibacterial activity. A number of these complexes also showed pronounced light-induced modulation of their effectiveness, with either biocidal enhancement or suppression, depending on such properties as singlet oxygen sensitization potential and lipophilicity. These collected studies examine the biocidal activity of the CPEs, as determined by Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) and Flow Cytometry, correlating this activity with the photophysical properties of the polymers. We demonstrate biocidal …

Cmv Vaccine Development Based On Epithelial Entry Mediators Ul128, Ul130, Ul131, Frances Saccoccio

Theses and Dissertations

Congenital cytomegalovirus infection is the leading cause of sensorineural hearing loss in the U.S. CMV vaccines developed to date do not protect the majority of women of childbearing age from primary CMV infection. Insufficient vaccine-induced epithelial entry neutralizing activity may be the reason for poor performance of these vaccines. CMV entry into endothelial and epithelial but not fibroblast cells requires the virion envelope complex gH/gL/UL128-131. Since current vaccines do not target this complex, epithelial entry mediators UL128-131 are attractive subunit CMV vaccine candidates, since they should target mucosal immunity. The mucosal immune response, specifically salivary epithelial entry neutralizing activity, has …

Genome-Wide Identification Of Allele-Specific Expression (Ase) In Response To Marek’S Disease Virus Infection Using Next Generation Sequencing., Sean Maceachern, William M. Muir, Seth Crosby, Hans H. Cheng

Department of Animal Sciences Faculty Publications

Background

Marek’s disease (MD), a T cell lymphoma induced by the highly oncogenic α-herpesvirus Marek’s disease virus (MDV), is the main chronic infectious disease concern threatening the poultry industry. Enhancing genetic resistance to MD in commercial poultry is an attractive method to augment MD vaccines, which is currently the control method of choice. In order to optimally implement this control strategy through marker-assisted selection (MAS) and to gain biological information, it is necessary to identify specific genes that influence MD incidence.

Methods

A genome-wide screen for allele-specific expression (ASE) in response to MDV infection was conducted. The highly inbred ADOL …
