The Relationship Of Cognitive Development Level, Supervision, And Counselor Skills In Preparing Counselors, Margaret Jean Jensen
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
The focus of this study was the exploration of specific developmental dimensions that may have an impact on the counselor training process, which ultimately will affect the quality of care offered by counselors to clients. Specifically, the relationship of cognitive developmental level and counseling competency skills was examined to determine if a relationship exists between the two dimensions and if so, can a counselor trainee's developmental level predict his or her level of counseling skills. Thirty master level counseling students (trainees) participated in this study during practicum or internship. The trainees were rated by their supervisors on both a measure …
Age-Related Hamster Mitochondrial Changes And Oocyte Changes Following Autologous Platelet Mitochondrial Microinjection, Fang Li
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
This study's objective was to verify age-related mitochondrial changes in oocytes from old hamsters compared with those from young hamsters. We used autologous platelet mitochondrial microinjection to improve the mitochondrial quality and quantity of aged oocytes to improve their pregnancy potential. Metaphase II oocytes were collected from super-ovulated female hamsters and prepared for biochemical and morphological analysis. Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) levels, mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) number, reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) were determined in individual oocytes from young and old hamsters. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) allowed evaluation of oocyte ultra-structure. In oocytes from old hamsters, ATP …

Sandel On Religion In The Public Square, Hugh Baxter
Sandel On Religion In The Public Square, Hugh Baxter
Faculty Scholarship
In the final chapter of "Justice" (2009), Sandel calls for a “new politics of the common good,” which he presents as an alternative to John Rawls’s idea of public reason. Sandel calls “misguided” Rawls’s search for “principles of justice that are neutral among competing conceptions of the good life.” According to Sandel, “[i]t is not always possible to define our rights and duties without taking up substantive moral questions; and even when it’s possible it may not be desirable.” In taking up these moral questions, Sandel writes, we must allow specifically religious convictions and reasons into the sphere of public …
A Short History Of Sex And Citizenship: The Historians' Amicus Brief In Flores-Villar V. United States, Kristin Collins
A Short History Of Sex And Citizenship: The Historians' Amicus Brief In Flores-Villar V. United States, Kristin Collins
Faculty Scholarship
The historians’ amicus brief that accompanies this essay was submitted to the Supreme Court in Flores-Villar v. United States, an equal protection challenge to federal statutes that regulate the citizenship status of foreign-born children of American parents. When the parents of such children are unmarried, federal law encumbers the ability of American fathers to secure citizenship for their children, while providing American mothers with a nearly unfettered ability to do the same. The general question before the Court in Flores-Villar – and a question that the Court has addressed in sum and substance on two other occasions during the last …

Fenfluramine reduces hunger and promotes body weight loss by increasing central serotonin (5-HT) signaling. More recently, neuropeptides have been linked to the regulation of feeding behavior, metabolism and body weight. To examine possible interactions between 5-HT and neuropeptides in appetite control, fenfluramine (200 nmol/0.5 μl/side) was administered directly into the hypothalamic paraventricular nuclei (PVN) of male rats. Bilateral fenfluramine produced significant hypophagia and increased expression of PVN corticotropin releasing factor (CRF) mRNA and neuropeptide Y (NPY) mRNA in the arcuate nucleus within the first hour after drug administration. Fenfluramine's effects on feeding behavior and mRNA expression were blocked by PVN …

Mueller, Oliver Vranjkovic, Samantha Wisniewski, Zheng Yang, Shi-Jiang Li, Colin Bohr, Evan N. Graf, David A. Baker, John R. Mantsch
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Cocaine addiction is characterized by a persistently heightened susceptibility to drug relapse. For this reason, the identification of medications that prevent drug relapse is a critical goal of drug abuse research. Drug re-exposure, the onset of stressful life events, and exposure to cues previously associated with drug use have been identified as determinants of relapse in humans and have been found to reinstate extinguished cocaine seeking in rats. This study examined the effects of acute oral (gavage) administration of levo-tetrahydropalmatine (l-THP), a tetrahydroprotoberberine isoquinoline with a pharmacological profile that includes antagonism of D1, D2 and D3 dopamine receptors, …

Apportioning Liability Behind A Veil Of Uncertainty, J. Shahar Dillbary
Apportioning Liability Behind A Veil Of Uncertainty, J. Shahar Dillbary
UC Law Journal
This Article challenges the reasoning that led most states to abandon the “no contribution” rule. Under the rule, if a victim obtains a judgment against two tortfeasors but chooses (even arbitrarily or out of spite) to recover only from one, the “chosen one” must pay the entire judgment while the other is exempted. This is the case even if the paying tortfeasor is only 1% at fault while the non-paying tortfeasor is 99% at fault. The rule has been lamented by tort-reform crusaders as immoral and unfair. One tortfeasor, the argument goes, should not bear the entire burden while the …
Note – Bridging The Gap: An Application Of Social Frameworks Evidence To Shaken Baby Syndrome, Lauren Quint
Note – Bridging The Gap: An Application Of Social Frameworks Evidence To Shaken Baby Syndrome, Lauren Quint
UC Law Journal
Ever since the syndrome was first recognized in the 1960s, a diagnosis of shaken baby syndrome (“SBS”) was believed to be pathognomonic of abuse. New data calls into question the accuracy of the diagnosis and its association with nonaccidental death. This data points to alternative causes of brain injuries in infants and small children and casts doubt on the validity of evidence frequently used at trial. This Note explores problems associated with expert testimony in the context of SBS. It argues that despite the ability to accurately present general causation evidence at trial, introduction of specific causation testimony is often …

Schizophrenia- Like Attentional Deficits Following Blockade Of Prefrontal Cortex Gaba(A) Receptors, Tracie A. Paine, Lauren E. Slipp, William A. Carlezon Jr.
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Attentional deficits are a core symptom of schizophrenia. Post-mortem analyses of the brains of schizophrenics reveal consistent abnormalities in gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons indicative of reduced cortical GABA transmission, raising the possibility that this pathology contributes to attentional deficits. We examined whether blockade of prefrontal cortex (PFC) GABA(A) receptors with bicuculline (BMI) impairs attention in rats using the 5-choice serial reaction time task (5CSRTT). For comparison, we also examined whether administration of the GABA(A) receptor agonist muscimol (MUS) would improve attention. In parallel, we examined the effects of both manipulations on activity in an open field and on motivation using …

A Systemic Approach To Next Generation Infrastructure Data Elicitation And Planning Using Serious Gaming Methods, Ersin Ancel
A Systemic Approach To Next Generation Infrastructure Data Elicitation And Planning Using Serious Gaming Methods, Ersin Ancel
Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations
Infrastructure systems are vital to the functioning of our society and economy. However, these systems are increasingly complex and are more interdependent than ever, making them difficult to manage. In order to respond to increasing demand, environmental concerns, and natural and man-made threats, infrastructure systems have to adapt and transform. Traditional engineering design approaches and planning tools have proven to be inadequate when planning and managing these complex socio-technical system transitions. The design and implementation of next generation infrastructure systems require holistic methodologies, encompassing organizational and societal aspects in addition to technical factors. In order to do so, a serious …

Altering Nitric Oxide Bioavailability And Lipid Profiles In Endothelial Cells By Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons In Particulate Matter, Liang Yu
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Epidemiologic studies have demonstrated a significant association between exposure to particulate matter (PM) and atherosclerosis. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in particulate matter, are well known to induce oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation via generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Lipid peroxidation involves regulating endothelial nitric oxide synthase via inhibition of its activity, and as a result, mediates dilation of coronary arterioles is involved with the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. However, data on assessment of oxidized lipid formation is limited due to low resolution of mass spectrometer methods. Taking the advantage of a Fourier Transform Ion Cyclotron Resonance Mass Spectrometer (FT-ICR-MS) …
Patterns Of Transience, Sex Bias, And Body Mass In Open-Habitat Rodent Populations, Stephen Edward Rice
Patterns Of Transience, Sex Bias, And Body Mass In Open-Habitat Rodent Populations, Stephen Edward Rice
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Rodents are assumed to live their lives in circumscribed (natal) areas with males being more prone to disperse than females and juveniles more prone to disperse than adults. To test these assumptions we examined the initial captures of geographic populations of hispid cotton rat, meadow vole, prairie vole, and marsh rice rat obtained through capture-mark-recapture methods. Capture records were obtained from Kansas and Illinois from long-term studies, and through live-trapping in Chesapeake, Virginia. I evaluated proportions of residents and transients, adults and juveniles, and males and females for significant differences among seasons, years, and geographic locations. The overall body masses …
Rats As Forest Pests In Southeastern Virginia: Girdling By The Hispid Cotton Rat Sigmodon Hispidus As A Significant Source Of Mortality Of Loblolly Pines (Pinus Taeda) In A Successional Pine Forest, Robyn M. Nadolny
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The hispid cotton rat (Sigmodon hispidus) is a common field rodent throughout the southeastern US, where volunteer loblolly pine trees (Pinus taeda) invade open space and begin the process of ecological succession from field to pine forest. Recent analysis of the diet of S. hispidus indicates that loblolly pine bark is stripped and eaten during the winter months. In this study, we explored the extent of rodent girdling on a 1.23 ha grid in a successional pine forest in southeastern Virginia. During the winter of 2005 we observed damage to 65% of trees in our study area, with 98% …
