Multistate Mark-Recapture Analysis Reveals No Effect Of Blood Sampling On Survival And Recapture Of Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Lucas J. Redmond, Michael T. Murphy Jul 2011

Multistate Mark-Recapture Analysis Reveals No Effect Of Blood Sampling On Survival And Recapture Of Eastern Kingbirds (Tyrannus Tyrannus), Lucas J. Redmond, Michael T. Murphy

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The experimentally supported and prevailing opinion is that blood sampling has few to no long-term effects on survival of birds when conducted properly, and blood sampling has become a vital addition to the toolbox of many ornithologists. However, many of the studies that concluded that blood sampling had negligible effects on birds used approaches that did not account for temporary emigration and probability of capture. To date, the only study to have done so found that blood sampling had a strong negative effect on survival. We conducted a mark–recapture analysis of 8 years of banding and bleeding data on Eastern …

Serum Igf-1 Concentrations Change With Soy And Seaweed Supplements In Healthy Postmenopausal American Women, Jane Teas, Mohammad R. Irhimeh, Susan Druker, Thomas G. Hurley, James R. Hébert, Todd M. Savarese, Mindy S. Kurzer Jul 2011

Serum Igf-1 Concentrations Change With Soy And Seaweed Supplements In Healthy Postmenopausal American Women, Jane Teas, Mohammad R. Irhimeh, Susan Druker, Thomas G. Hurley, James R. Hébert, Todd M. Savarese, Mindy S. Kurzer

Faculty Publications

Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is an anabolic hormone important for growth and development. However, high-circulating serum concentrations in adults are associated with increased risk of postmenopausal breast cancer. Nutritional status and specific foods influence serum IGF-1 concentrations. Breast cancer incidence is typically low in Asian countries where soy is commonly consumed. Paradoxically, soy supplement trials in American women have reported significant increases in IGF-1. Seaweed also is consumed regularly in Asian countries where breast cancer risk is low. We investigated the possibility that seaweed could modify soy-associated increases in IGF-1 in American women. Thirty healthy postmenopausal women (mean age …

Transport Of Trace Elements In Runoff From Unamended And Pond‐Ash Amended Feedlot Surfaces, Jason R. Vogel, John E. Gilley, Gary L. Cottrell, Brian L. Woodbury, Elaine D. Berry, Roger Eigenberg Jul 2011

Transport Of Trace Elements In Runoff From Unamended And Pond‐Ash Amended Feedlot Surfaces, Jason R. Vogel, John E. Gilley, Gary L. Cottrell, Brian L. Woodbury, Elaine D. Berry, Roger Eigenberg

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The use of pond ash (fly ash that has been placed in evaporative ponds for storage and subsequently dewatered) for feedlot surfaces provides a drier environment for livestock and furnishes economic benefits. However, pond ash is known to have high concentrations of trace elements, and the runoff water‐quality effects of feedlot surfaces amended with pond ash are not well defined. For this study, two experimental units (plots) were established in eight feedlot pens. Four of the pens contained unamended soil surfaces, and the remaining four pens had pond‐ash amended surfaces. Before each test, unconsolidated surface material was removed from four …

Outcomes Assessment Of Role-Play Scenarios For Teaching Responsible Conduct Of Research, Stephanie N. Seiler, Bradley J. Brummel, Kerri L. Anderson, Kyoung Jin Kim, Serena G. Wee, C. K. Gunsalus, Michael C. Loui Jul 2011

Outcomes Assessment Of Role-Play Scenarios For Teaching Responsible Conduct Of Research, Stephanie N. Seiler, Bradley J. Brummel, Kerri L. Anderson, Kyoung Jin Kim, Serena G. Wee, C. K. Gunsalus, Michael C. Loui

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

We describe the summative assessment of role-play scenarios that we previously developed to teach central topics in the responsible conduct of research (RCR) to graduate students in science and engineering. Interviews with role-play participants, with participants in a case discussion training session, and with untrained students suggested that role-playing might promote a deeper appreciation of RCR by shifting the focus away from wanting to simply “know the rules.“ We also present the results of a think-aloud case analysis study and describe the development of a behaviorally-anchored rating scale (BARS) to assess participants' case analysis performance.

A Probabilistic Analysis Of A Simplified Biogeography-Based Optimization Algorithm, Daniel J. Simon Jul 2011

A Probabilistic Analysis Of A Simplified Biogeography-Based Optimization Algorithm, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is a population-based evolutionary algorithm (EA) that is based on the mathematics of biogeography. Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of biological organisms. We present a simplified version of BBO and perform an approximate analysis of the BBO population using probability theory. Our analysis provides approximate values for the expected number of generations before the population's best solution improves, and the expected amount of improvement. These expected values are functions of the population size. We quantify three behaviors as the population size increases: first, we see that the best solution in the initial randomly generated …

Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker Jul 2011

Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker

Communication ETDs

The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States brought a heightened awareness to the role of race and produced speculation about the idealized notion of the achievement of a post-racial United States. This dissertation examined mediated conversations on mixed race identity in response to some of the significant events in the Obama campaign and the first months of the Obama presidency. Specifically, this study examined the ways that newspapers and blogs construct discourses about race, mixed race, and racism. Further, I explored the biological, legal, and social implications as they relate to current constructions of mixed race …

Nopalitos Mean Something: Communicating Identity In Mother-Daughter Relationships Through Food And Recipe, Darla Antoine

Communication ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a memoir/cookbook to highlight the unique role of food and recipes in relationships among women—specifically within mother-daughter relationships. The text highlights how food and recipes can become emotionally entwined in our life stories and in our relationships. Using cluster analysis, the analytical research of this thesis creates conversations about food and recipes as communicative vessels of intimacy and legacy among women and their daughters. Finally, this thesis demonstrates new ways food and recipes may help women navigate their own identities within both the psychoanalytical stages of the Oedipal complex and the psychological …

Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin Jul 2011

Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study on Gender-Responsive Budgeting is based primarily on the Community-Based Monitoring System (CMBS) individual-level (more than 263,000 individuals) and household-level (more than 65,000 households) data of Pasay City for 2005. Other supplemental information from the documents of the different offices of the City Government was used to answer the objectives of the study. However, the lack of disaggregated data based on gender and age from the CBMS database and the Pasay City Government reports made it difficult to substantially determine whether the City’s programs and budgets have been responsive to gender differentials in the different aspects of quality of …

How Does The Fictional Tv Marriage Influence A Young Adult's Own Perceptions About Marriage?, Gina A. Svedsen Jul 2011

How Does The Fictional Tv Marriage Influence A Young Adult's Own Perceptions About Marriage?, Gina A. Svedsen

Student Work

This study explored the relationship between television influence and the young adult‘s perception of marriage. The participants were 178, college-aged males and females (median age 20) from a large Midwestern university. How much television participants watched and the types of programs they watched were examined. Participants were asked where they got their information about marriage and how they thought marriage was displayed on TV. Two hypotheses were tested -- H1: Female students are more likely than male students to use TV programs for ideas on what marriage is really like; H2: Television has a greater influence over female students than …

A Recent Escherichia Coli O104:H4 Outbreak In Germany, Pattarachai Kiratisin, Amornrut Leelaporn

Asian Medical Journal and Alternative Medicine

The outbreak of Escherichia coli in Germany and in other countries in Europe, including the USA and Canada, in May and June 2011, was apparently the biggest outbreak of food-borne infection. Several thousands of cases have been reported with a high number of deaths. The causative pathogenic organism is enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC) O104:H4. Raw bean sprouts grown in northern Germany were likely the reservoir of the pathogens. Genetic study has revealed an interesting information that the pathogen is a strain of enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC) with an acquisition of Shiga toxin-encoding gene. Such toxin gene normally occurred in strains …

Kneejerks And Fresh Starts: A History Of Speakers And Authors Of Protibaad, Atreyee Majumder

Socio-Legal Review

I hadn't seen a michheel in close to a decade. Until yesterday. Middle-aged Writers' Buildings officials, of Congress leanings, protested the attacks on Congress leaders in Burdwan saying that it was possible due to police apathy and negligence. There were hardly any banners, mostl slogans. Even as some tyres are deflated and buses burnt down in the heart of South Calcutta. The Congress is back with a bang, say the newspapers. These attacks have reinvigorated our workers. A Congress leader is quoted. A feeble identity that was getting increasingly engulfed by the grassroot diva of the state is now fed …

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 And Transforming Growth Factor-Β Stimulate Cystine/Glutamate Exchange Activity In Dental Pulp Cells, Katherine Pauly, Kymberly Fritz, Alyssa Furey, Doug Lobner Jul 2011

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 And Transforming Growth Factor-Β Stimulate Cystine/Glutamate Exchange Activity In Dental Pulp Cells, Katherine Pauly, Kymberly Fritz, Alyssa Furey, Doug Lobner

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction

The growth factors insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) are protective to dental pulp cells in culture against the toxicity of the composite materials Durafill VS and Flow Line (Henry Schein Inc, New York, NY). Because the toxicity of these materials is mediated by oxidative stress, it seemed possible that the protective effects of IGF-1 and TGF-β were through the enhancement of an endogenous antioxidant mechanism.

Methods

We used cultured dental pulp cells to determine the mechanism of the protective effects of IGF-1 and TGF-β, focusing on the glutathione system and the role of cystine/glutamate exchange …

Evolution And Culture, Athanasios Chasiotis Jul 2011

Evolution And Culture, Athanasios Chasiotis

Online Readings in Psychology and Culture

The goal of cross-cultural psychology to identify and explain similarities and differences in the behavior of individuals in different cultures requires linking human behavior to its context (Cole, Meshcheryakov & Ponomariov, 2011). In order to specify this relation, the focus is usually on the sociocultural environment and how it interacts with behavior. Since cross-cultural psychology also deals with the evolutionary and biological bases of behavior, this focus on culture has regularly led to an unbalanced view (Berry, Poortinga, Breugelmans, Chasiotis & Sam, 2011). Too often, biology and culture are seen as opposites: what is labeled as cultural is not biological …

Medical Pluralism In Morocco: The Cultural, Religious, Historical And Political-Economic Determinants Of Health And Choice., Tyler Martinson Jul 2011

Medical Pluralism In Morocco: The Cultural, Religious, Historical And Political-Economic Determinants Of Health And Choice., Tyler Martinson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Morocco is a culturally diverse intersection between the African continent, the Arab world and Europe. This multiplicity is mirrored in the country’s pluralistic medical system and beliefs surrounding the concepts of illness and health. Explanations of health are endorsed by culturally specific knowledge and are then naturalized and taken as objective. A synthesis of theoretical descriptions and political-economic of medical pluralism, along with historical analysis, explains the presence of multiple health practices and how a person’s choice of medical practice is heavily influenced by dynamic socio-cultural, religious, historical, political and economic factors. This study will help improve practitioner/client narratives of …

Techniques To Promote Garry Oak Seedling Growth And Survival In Areas With High Levels Of Herbivory And Competition, David R. Clements, Seth Luginbill, David A. Jordan, Randall Dragt

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

Though regeneration of Garry oak (Quercus garryana) seedlings within Garry oak ecosystems is important to maintain this threatened habitat, seedling regeneration is often poor. Two independent studies were initiated in the early 2000s to examine questions surrounding Garry oak recruitment: one at the Crow's Nest Ecological Research Area (CNERA) on Salt Spring Island, BC, and another at the Pacific Rim Institute for Environmental Stewardship (PRI) on Whidbey Island, WA. In both areas, Garry oak seedlings were caged and monitored for growth and relative health. Over 8 years at CNERA, growth of caged plants outpaced growth of controls, which was indicative …

Tumor-Derived Interleukin-10 As A Prognostic Factor In Stage Iii Patients Undergoing Adjuvant Treatment With An Autologous Melanoma Cell Vaccine., Amit Mahipal, Mizue Terai, David Berd, Inna Chervoneva, Kashyap Patel, Michael Mastrangelo, Takami Sato

Department of Medical Oncology Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: Interleukin-10 (IL-10) downregulates T-cell-mediated immune responses. We studied the association between IL-10 production by freshly isolated melanoma cell suspensions in vitro and overall survival in patients undergoing adjuvant treatment with a vaccine prepared from the same autologous melanoma cells modified with a hapten, dinitrophenyl (DNP).

METHODS: Forty-four patients with cutaneous melanoma (29 stage III and 15 stage IV) were prospectively evaluated. Tumor cells were extracted from metastatic deposits for production of DNP-modified autologous melanoma cell vaccine. Small aliquots of the melanoma cell suspensions were separated prior to vaccine processing and cultured overnight for IL-10 production. Based on a blind …

Teaching Aberrance: Cinema As A Site For African Feminism, Corinna Mcleod Jul 2011

Teaching Aberrance: Cinema As A Site For African Feminism, Corinna Mcleod

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines the influence of colonialist instructional cinema on modern African cinema production. The four films – Neria, Everyone’s Child, Wend Kuuni, and Taafe Fanga – differ in national origin, thematic approaches, and cinematic technique, but they share in displaying an element of instructional cinema. The instructional nature of the films asserts the value of women in post-colonial African societies, who, in the space of the films as in real life, are the double-colonized subject.
