Prepare, Process, Package, Walteria C. Tucker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Since Alejo Carpentier's 1944 encounter with the "real maravilloso" in the ruins of the Citadelle La Ferriáere, Haiti has been linked with the notion of Latin American identity, in particular, and American identity, in general. Interesting to me are the ways and the means by which Haiti resurfaces in Cuban and Puerto Rican narratives and what allusions to Haiti in these texts imply about its relationship to the Hispanic Caribbean. I will combine the ideas of John Beverley, Sybille Fischer, and Mimi Sheller to discuss how representations of Haiti work to perpetuate its disavowal and render it a consumable product …

Preschoolers' Use Of Intentionality In Understanding Causal Structure Of Objects During Imitation Learning, Amy K. Gardiner Jan 2011

Preschoolers' Use Of Intentionality In Understanding Causal Structure Of Objects During Imitation Learning, Amy K. Gardiner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Object use is a ubiquitous characteristic of the human species, and learning how objects function is a fundamental part of human development. This research examines the role that intentionality plays in children's understanding of causal relationships during imitation learning of object use. In Studies 1, 2, and 3, 2- to 5-year-olds observed demonstrations in which causally irrelevant and causally relevant actions were performed to achieve a desired goal of retrieving toys from within containers. Irrelevant actions were performed either intentionally ("There!") or accidentally ("Whoops! I didn't mean to do that!"). Study 1 found that 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds, but not …

Prevalence Of Antibiotic Resistant Commensal Bacteria In Endangered Avian Species, Caroline Ann Efstathion Jan 2011

Prevalence Of Antibiotic Resistant Commensal Bacteria In Endangered Avian Species, Caroline Ann Efstathion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study examines prevalence of antibiotic resistant bacteria in Amazon parrots in three different groups, one wild and two captive. Commensal bacteria were isolated from 24 parrots and screened for antibiotic resistance. Culture-based and molecular methods were used and a total of 546 isolates from the genus Staphylococcus and Rothia were obtained. Antibiotic resistance was found in all parrot groups in 161 isolates with 48 having multi-drug resistance. The highest frequency of resistance was found to Enrofloxacin and Amoxicillin/Clavulnate though all antibiotics tested were resisted by some bacterial isolates. Both captive groups exhibited more resistant individuals than the wild. This …

Protective Mechanism Of Sulindac Against Animal Model Of Ischemic Stroke, Jigar P. Modi Jan 2011

Protective Mechanism Of Sulindac Against Animal Model Of Ischemic Stroke, Jigar P. Modi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The Effect of Sulindac was studied on an animal model of ischemic stroke. Sulindac, a non steroid anti inflammatory drug (NSAID) could protect cell death due to hypoxia/reoxygenation. This drug was given 2 days before and 24 hrs after ischemia until animals were sacrificed on 3rd or 11th day. Infarct size was measured for these animals. Sulindac induced Hsp 27 in ischemic penumbra and core on Day 3 & 11 with uncoated nylon suture which shows its cell-survival and anti-apoptotic activity. Also, it increased expression of cell survival markers such as Akt, Bcl2 & Grp 78 in ischemic penumbra and …

Reconfiguring The Classic Narrative Of Pulp Fiction, Alexandria S. Gray Jan 2011

Reconfiguring The Classic Narrative Of Pulp Fiction, Alexandria S. Gray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project considers four writers that have used postmodern narrative strategies to reconfigure classic pulp science fiction tropes. The primary texts are Catherine L. Moore's "Shambleau," Eleanor Arnason's "The Warlord of Saturn's Moons", Robert Heinlein's "The Rolling Stones", and Margaret Atwood's "The Blind Assassin". Each experiments with narrative voices or uses a story-within-a-story structure. These strategies enable the authors to engage and comment on the process of how traditional tropes and narratives are brought into a new context through appropriation and reconstruction.

Regulation Of Rapid Signaling At The Cone Ribbon Synapse Via Distinct Pre- And Postsynaptic Mechanisms, Matthew Jm Rowan Jan 2011

Regulation Of Rapid Signaling At The Cone Ribbon Synapse Via Distinct Pre- And Postsynaptic Mechanisms, Matthew Jm Rowan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Background: Light-adaptation is a multifaceted process in the retina that helps adjust the visual system to changing illumination levels. Many studies are focused on the photochemical mechanism of light-adaptation. Neural network adaptation mechanisms at the photoreceptor synapse are largely unknown. We find that large, spontaneous Excitatory Amino Acid Transporter (EAATs) activity in cone terminals may contribute to cone synaptic adaptation, specifically with respect to how these signals change in differing conditions of light. EAATs in neurons quickly transport glutamate from the synaptic cleft, and also elicit large thermodynamically uncoupled Cl- currents when activated. We recorded synaptic EAAT currents from cones …

Rifles, Residents, And Runaways, Brian Thomas Dunne Jan 2011

Rifles, Residents, And Runaways, Brian Thomas Dunne

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In the fall of 1864, Maryland became the first Border State to abolish slavery with the adoption of a new state constitution. In order to best understand the evolution of this event, the purpose of this study was to examine the civil-military relations of Maryland during the Civil War and how these relations affected the institution of slavery in the state. Therefore, the main argument is that the conflict between military and civil authorities in Maryland during the war revealed two points: first, that the federal government maintained a faithful vigilance over the state during the war and second, that …

Scenographia, Sofâia. Matsi Jan 2011

Scenographia, Sofâia. Matsi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Informed by my training in the physical sciences, my thesis show presents results of research on the elements of line and dramatic staging. My process is documented through the experimental grounds of my sketchbooks. Originating from observational drawings of organic forms, my fascination with line quality and my desire for theatrical settings propelled these drawings to acquire a three dimensional presence. Through constructed book formats, staged micro-scenes, and photographs, I test my extracted, abstract forms in varying intimate environments. I control these worlds through scale, space and lighting, and I observe and record how they behave. I gather data through …

Studies On The Mechanism By Which Sulindac Sensitizes Cancer Cells To Oxidative Stress, Alexander Kreymerman Jan 2011

Studies On The Mechanism By Which Sulindac Sensitizes Cancer Cells To Oxidative Stress, Alexander Kreymerman

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Sulindac is a known NSAID that has also been shown to have anti-cancer activity that is not related to its ability to inhibit COX 1 and 2. During the past 15 years there have been a large number of studies attempting to elucidate its mechanism of action. Our laboratory has shown that sulindac can both protect normal cells and enhance the killing of cancer cells under oxidative stress from H2O2 and TBHP. However, except for mitochondrial dysfunction and ROS production, the mechanism by which sulindac sensitized the cancer cells to oxidative stress remains unknown. Results of this research project suggest …

Studied Girlhoods, Regina. Dilgen Jan 2011

Studied Girlhoods, Regina. Dilgen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Dorothy Allison's Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, Mary Karr's The Liars' Club, and Barbara Robinette Moss's Change Me into Zeus's Daughter are memoirs published in the 1990s of girlhoods in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This dissertation uses and expands upon the approaches of the multi-disciplinary Girls' Studies in analyzing how these memoirists theorize their own girlhoods. Each memoirist represents her experience in a culture that attempts to marginalize, silence, and define her. An application of the foundational work on girlhood in developmental psychology provides for an analysis of each memoirist's depiction of girlhood as a …

Systematic Evaluation Of Object Detection And Recognition Approaches With Context Capabilities, Urbina Rafael J Giusti Jan 2011

Systematic Evaluation Of Object Detection And Recognition Approaches With Context Capabilities, Urbina Rafael J Giusti

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Contemporary computer vision solutions to the problem of object detection aim at incorporating contextual information into the process. This thesis proposes a systematic evaluation of the usefulness of incorporating knowledge about the geometric context of a scene into a baseline object detection algorithm based on local features. This research extends publicly available MATLABRª implementations of leading algorithms in the field and integrates them in a coherent and extensible way. Experiments are presented to compare the performance and accuracy between baseline and context-based detectors, using images from the recently published SUN09 dataset. Experimental results demonstrate that adding contextual information about the …

Uncovering The Role Of The Rodent Dorsal Hippocampus In Spatial And Object Memory Retrieval, Lisa Rios Jan 2011

Uncovering The Role Of The Rodent Dorsal Hippocampus In Spatial And Object Memory Retrieval, Lisa Rios

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Male C7BL/6J mice were implanted with bilateral dorsal CA1 guide cannulae. After confirming that intrahippocampal microinfusion of muscimol impaired hippocampal function, demonstrated by impaired performance in the Morris water maze, the influence of intrahippocampal muscimol was tested in the Novel Object Recognition paradigm. During a test session 24 h after the last habituation/sample session, mice were presented with one familiar object and one novel object. Successful retention of object memory was inferred if mice spent more time exploring the novel object than the familiar object. Results demonstrate that muscimol infused into dorsal CA1 region prior to the test session eliminates …

We Once Lived In Caves And Other Stories, Khristian. Mecom Jan 2011

We Once Lived In Caves And Other Stories, Khristian. Mecom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The following manuscript is a collection of eight short stories that center on the theme of how stories and storytelling, in all their different forms, fill our lives. In one story a girl that lives in other people's houses, longs to tell her story, while in another story a girl struggles with a secret her grandmother leaves behind as she tries to reconstruct her grandmother's story. Some stories use magical and fairy tale-like elements, which work as allusions in the stories and echo the events happening in characters' lives. Another theme present in the collection is that of family and …

Young Children's Artifact Conceptualization, Patricia P. Schultz Jan 2011

Young Children's Artifact Conceptualization, Patricia P. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

One of the most fundamental functions of human cognition is to parse an otherwise chaotic world into different kinds of things. The ability to learn what objects are and how to respond to them appropriately is essential for daily living. The literature has presented contrasting evidence about the role of perpetual features such as artifact appearance versus causal or inductive reasoning in chldren's category distinctions (e.g., function). The present project used a child-initiated inquiry paradigm to investigate how children conceptualize artifacts, specifically how they prioritize different types of information that typify not only novel but also familiar objects. Results underscore …

Conservation Easements At The Climate Change Crossroads, Jessica Owley Jan 2011

Conservation Easements At The Climate Change Crossroads, Jessica Owley

Journal Articles

The essence of a conservation easement as a static perpetual restriction is coming to a head with the understanding that the world is a changing place. This demonstration is nowhere more dramatic than in the context of global climate change. In response to this conflict, users of conservation easements face the decision of either (1) changing conservation easement agreements to fit the landscape or (2) changing the landscape to fit the conservation easements. Both of these options present benefits and challenges in implementation. Where conservation easement holders’ ultimate goal is to keep a maximum number of acres under protection from …

Administrative Change, Randy J. Kozel, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski Jan 2011

Administrative Change, Randy J. Kozel, Jeffrey A. Pojanowski

Journal Articles

Determining the standard of review for administrative actions has commanded judicial and scholarly interest like few other topics. Notwithstanding the extensive debates, far less consideration has been given to the unique features of agencies’ deviations from their own precedents. In this article we examine this puzzle of administrative change. By change, we mean a reversal of the agency’s former views about the best way to implement and interpret its regulatory mandate. We trace the lineage of administrative change at the Supreme Court and analyze features that distinguish agency reversals from other administrative actions. In particular, we contend that because administrative …

Power, Knowledge, Animals, Lisa Johnson Jan 2011

Power, Knowledge, Animals, Lisa Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Although Foucault did not address the question of the animal, he asserted the assessment of whether a new politics of truth can be constituted as "the essential political problem" (1980, p. 134). Though the "essential political problem" may be considered as it relates to the politics of truth about animals, a Foucaultian perspective does not allow a prediction in response, other than the recognition that change may occur. What is understood to be "true" about animals may change if the relationships between events that exist at a given time ("conditions") require the emergence of a different way of knowing. This …

Culture For Sale? An Exploratory Study Of The Crow Fair, Thomas D. Bordelon, Marie Opatrny, Wendy G. Turner, Steven D. Williams

The Qualitative Report

This paper describes an ethnographically-oriented participant-observation study conducted during the annual Crow Fair, held in south central Montana. Data collected included audio-recorded interviews with participants, participant observations, photographic and video recordings. Narrative interviews were transcribed and analyzed using the constant comparison method. Multiple data sources improved the veracity of this study through triangulation, and four themes emerged from the data: commercialization, alcohol abuse, spirituality, and community. The researchers discuss these themes and their conclusions regarding the "selling" of Native American culture as a form of cultural transmission. Theme analysis revealed the researchers recognized that the principal researcher had changed his …

Anxiety, Knowledge And Help: A Model For How Black And White College Students Search For Hiv/Aids Information On The Internet, Kim Smith Jan 2011

Anxiety, Knowledge And Help: A Model For How Black And White College Students Search For Hiv/Aids Information On The Internet, Kim Smith

The Qualitative Report

Using the "think aloud" protocol, which allows for the collection of data in real time, the researcher audio taped comments from 13 white college students from a predominately white university in the Southeastern United States and 15 black students from a predominately black university, as they explained how they searched for HIV/AIDS information on the Internet. A grounded theory analysis of the tapes revealed a three-stage model that students progressed through as they searched for HIV/AIDS information on the Internet. That model also revealed that all of the white students searched for general information about HIV/AIDS on the Internet, while …

Resolutions And Their Incongruities: Further Thoughts On Logical Mechanism, Christian F. Hempelmann, Salvatore Attardo Jan 2011

Resolutions And Their Incongruities: Further Thoughts On Logical Mechanism, Christian F. Hempelmann, Salvatore Attardo

Faculty Publications

This paper is a contribution to the study of the resolution of incongruities in humor. We reject some criticisms of logical mechanisms and analyze three different types of incongruities in humorous texts: completely backgrounded, backgrounded, and foregrounded. Only the latter are addressed by logical mechanisms. We identify a mechanism of “incongruity shifting” which may be a candidate for “deep” logical mechanism (along the lines of “parallelism” in Attardo et al. HUMOR: International Journal of Humor Research 15: 1–44, 2002). We finally discuss the similarities between Oring's (Engaging humor, University of Illinois Press, 2003) “appropriate incongruity” theory and our approach, which …

How-To Data Collection Series: The Evolution Of The Focused Discussion Group: From Non-Participant To One Of The Crew, José Luis Calderón

The Qualitative Report

This article is part of The Weekly Qualitative Report's occasional series on "How-To Collect Qualitative Data." The qualitative data collection method described is that of focused discussion groups (FDG's). This method involves the moderator, or scripter as is the preferred term in focused discussion groups, to move beyond that of a non-participant data collector to that of an engaged participant-observer, observer-participant who is willing to get into the discussion with the participants and to provide accurate information to them while prodding them to discuss the topic in increasingly personally meaningful ways. Focused discussion groups are particularly helpful for working with …

Investigation Of Trapped Vortex Combustion Using Hydrogen-Rich Fuels, Khaled. Zbeeb

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The combustion process of a fuel is a challenging subject when it comes to analyze its performance and resultant emissions. The main task of this study is to optimize the selection of a hydrogen-rich fuel based on its performance and emissions. Computational Fluid Dynamics analysis is performed to test the combustion performance and emissions from the vortex trapped combustor when natural gas fuel (methane) is replaced with renewable and alternative fuels such as hydrogen and synthesis gas. Correlation graphs for the trapped vortex combustor performance and NOx, CO, and CO2 emissions for various types of fuels with different compositions and …

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown Jan 2011

You Can't Go Home Again: The Place Of Tradition In "Firefly's" Dystopian-Utopia And Utopian-Distopia, R Brown

School of Art, Design and Architecture

Science fiction has long been a site in which utopian-dystopian visions have been articulated. This paper uses one exemplar of this genre as a springboard into a discussion of the desire for a return to origin and of flawed attempts to impose an image of that origin, with discursions into illustrations drawn from contemporary conditions. In opposition to the hegemonic and reductive tendencies inherent in such attempts, this paper proposes an alternative which engages with the everyday reality of life. Intrinsic to this proposition is that our traditions and utopias must be founded upon a continual (re)making in the everyday.

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani Jan 2011

Third Way Architecture: Between Cybernetics And Phenomenology, S Murrani

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article in its essence aims to challenge and unfold, each at a time, two different fields of methodology – cybernetics and phenomenology – that have direct effects on the product of being and the process of becoming in architectural discourse. Furthermore, this article suggests a third way philosophy for architecture that relates notions of post-phenomenology and technoscience, and considers both to be equally vital to development and speculation within current architectural discourse. First, the history of each of the two fields – cybernetics and phenomenology – will be unveiled with a focus on exploring their impact upon architecture in …

Propofol And Children--What We Know And What We Do Not Know., Ae Rigby-Jones, Jr Sneyd

Peninsula Medical School

The pharmacokinetics of propofol are relatively well described in the pediatric population. Recent work has confirmed the validity of allometric scaling for predicting propofol disposition across different species and for describing pediatric ontogenesis. In the first year of life, allometric models require adjustment to reflect ontogeny of maturation. Pharmacodynamic data for propofol in children are scarcer, because of practical difficulties in data collection and the limitations of currently available depth of anesthesia monitors for pediatric use. Hence, questions relating to the comparative sensitivity of children to propofol, and differences in time to peak effect relative to adults, remain unanswered. K(eo) …
