Dividends, Momentum And Macroeconomic Variables As Determinants Of The U.S. Equity Premium Across Economic Regimes, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar Jan 2011

Dividends, Momentum And Macroeconomic Variables As Determinants Of The U.S. Equity Premium Across Economic Regimes, Anastasios G. Malliaris, Ramaprasad Bhar

School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works

The equity premium of the S&P 500 index is explained in this paper by several variables that can be grouped into fundamental, behavioral, and macroeconomic factors. We hypothesize that the statistical significance of these variables changes across economic regimes. The three regimes we consider are the low‐volatility, medium‐volatility, and high‐volatility regimes in contrast to previous studies that do not differentiate across economic regimes. By using the three‐state Markov switching regime econometric methodology, we confirm that the statistical significance of the independent variables representing fundamentals, macroeconomic conditions, and a behavioral variable changes across economic regimes. Our findings offer an improved understanding …

Analysis Of Three Types Of Sources To Determine The Existence Of Native Bees In Historical San Francisco, East Bay Area, Sharon Lee Ordeman Jan 2011

Analysis Of Three Types Of Sources To Determine The Existence Of Native Bees In Historical San Francisco, East Bay Area, Sharon Lee Ordeman

Master's Theses

The arrival of the missionaries in the late eighteenth century began the transformation of the San Francisco East Bay area from wetlands to orchards, grain fields, and grazing lands. This research considers the possibility that European and American newcomers enlarged native bee ranges in the East Bay cities of San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and Hayward when imported pollen and nectar-producing flora were planted. Three types of sources are analyzed: journals and diaries of explorers, missionaries, and botanists; native bee and plant specimens collected before the Gold Rush in 1848; and ethnographies of Ohlone Native Americans. Conclusive evidence for the presence …

Wild Country Hall: Children’S Learning At A Residential Outdoor Education Centre., Anthony Thomas Rea Jan 2011

Wild Country Hall: Children’S Learning At A Residential Outdoor Education Centre., Anthony Thomas Rea

Plymouth Institute of Education Theses

This thesis is about learning at a residential outdoor education centre [pseudonym:- Wild County Hall]. It poses and answers three questions: • How useful might discursive positioning be as a perspective on learning? • What are the discourses at Wild Country Hall and how are they different to schooling discourses? • How might neo-Liberal discursive practices, including performativity and current schooling orthodoxies have affected the pedagogic practices at this centre? The review of literature provides an overview of the key literature on outdoor, adventure and experiential learning, considering these through the lenses of learning as acquisition, participation and transformation, before …

Peter Lanyon: A Life Geographic, Marion Parish Jan 2011

Peter Lanyon: A Life Geographic, Marion Parish

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences Theses

This research is a biography. It follows the creative and working life of Peter Lanyon, an artist born in 1918 in St Ives, as he painted landscapes of his home county, Cornwall, and his travels abroad. Here I open up a dialogue between the biographical and geographical, exploring a path between past and present, using material objects alongside memories and narratives affected by those objects. I explore material, embodied and sensuous relationships between landscape, history and biography and look towards how land, sea and air are animated and animating, forging other forms of geographical knowledge. Lanyon’s work is conceived as …

Cybertrash, Max Stul Oppenheimer Jan 2011

Cybertrash, Max Stul Oppenheimer

All Faculty Scholarship

Information stored in a physical object receives the same Fourth

Amendment protection as the physical object in which it is stored.

As information moves online, it becomes independent of physical

objects, and therefore traditional rules must be reexamined. Others

have argued persuasively/ and courts appear receptive to the

argument, that online communications and data should receive the

same protection as their analogs embodied in the physical world.

Even assuming that this conclusion will be universally accepted, a

troubling consequence remains: the clear weight of authority holds

that Fourth Amendment protection does not apply to information

embodied in discarded physical trash. …

Attaining A Sustainable Future For Public Higher Education: The Role Of Institutional Effectiveness And Resource Dependence, Mirela Blekic Jan 2011

Attaining A Sustainable Future For Public Higher Education: The Role Of Institutional Effectiveness And Resource Dependence, Mirela Blekic

Dissertations and Theses

The world of today's higher education organizations is characterized by complexities brought about as a result of rapid change, economic and political turbulence, and increasing global interdependence. The complexity of the environment in which colleges and universities operate is also due in part to a need to serve multiple internal and external constituencies. In order to be more responsive to the demands of its numerous constituencies and at the same time preserve their intrinsic values, colleges and universities need to know how effective they are in what they do. This research asked: To what degree does institutional effectiveness allow public …

Factors Influencing The Marine Spatial Ecology Of Seabirds: Implications For Theory, Conservation And Management, William James Grecian Jan 2011

Factors Influencing The Marine Spatial Ecology Of Seabirds: Implications For Theory, Conservation And Management, William James Grecian

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Seabirds are wide-ranging apex-predators and useful bio-indicators of marine systems. Nevertheless, changes are occurring in the marine environment, and seabirds require protection from the deleterious effects of climate change, fisheries, pollution, offshore development, introduced predators and invasive species. The UK supports internationally important populations of seabirds but also has vast wind and wave resources, therefore understanding how seabirds use the marine environment is vital in order to quantify the potential consequences of further exploiting these resources. In this thesis I first describe the range of wave energy converting devices operational or in development in the UK, and review the potential …

Life Cycle Assessment Of Flax Fibres, Nilmini Pj Dissanayake Jan 2011

Life Cycle Assessment Of Flax Fibres, Nilmini Pj Dissanayake

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

This thesis aims to investigate the sustainability of bast fibres specifically flax fibres as the reinforcement for polymer matrix composites (referenced to glass fibres) by undertaking a quantitative Life Cycle Assessment using the eight environmental impact classification factors of global warming, acidification, eutrophication, human toxicity, aquatic toxicity, ozone depletion, photochemical oxidants creation and non-renewable/abiotic resource depletion. A data set was compiled from numerous literature sources to complete the Life Cycle Inventory for the production of flax fibres. Three scenarios were studied for the production of either flax sliver (pre-spun fibre) or yarn (post-spun fibre): low (no-till combined with warm water …

Sustainable Heritage Management Practices At Visited Heritage Sites In Devon And Cornwall, Susan Elizabeth Joan Darlow Jan 2011

Sustainable Heritage Management Practices At Visited Heritage Sites In Devon And Cornwall, Susan Elizabeth Joan Darlow

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Sustainability is one of the key challenges facing society in the twenty-first century. The adoption of sustainable practices in the heritage sector resonates with its long-established objectives to conserve and enhance the historic environment, although its implementation can also present significant dilemmas for the commodification, integrity, authenticity, accessibility and viability of these resources, particularly where sites are tourist attractions. The aim of this thesis was to investigate progress in the adoption of sustainable practices in heritage properties and sites in Devon and Cornwall. The findings were based on the compilation of an inventory of selected heritage resources; an extensive questionnaire …

The Ecotoxicology Of Engineered Nanoparticles To Freshwater Fish, Benjamin John Shaw Jan 2011

The Ecotoxicology Of Engineered Nanoparticles To Freshwater Fish, Benjamin John Shaw

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The use of nanoscale materials is growing exponentially, but there are also concerns about the environmental hazard to aquatic biota. Metal-containing engineered nanoparticles (NPs) are an important group of these new materials, and whilst there are undoubtedly a plethora of beneficial uses for these NPs, it is essential that an appropriate risk assessment is carried out in order to protect the environment and human health, with the consumption of contaminated fish a distinct possibility. The current study aimed to assess the bioavailability, uptake and toxicological effects of two metal-NPs (TiO2 NPs and Cu-NPs) to fish from both dietary and waterborne …

Encoding Strategies And Mechanisms Underpinning Adaptation To Stimulus Statistics In The Rat Barrel Cortex, Lucy Anne Davies Jan 2011

Encoding Strategies And Mechanisms Underpinning Adaptation To Stimulus Statistics In The Rat Barrel Cortex, Lucy Anne Davies

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

It is well established that, following adaptation, cells adjust their sensitivity to reflect the global stimulus conditions. Two recent studies in guinea pig inferior colliculus (IC, Dean, Harper & McAlpine 2005) and rat barrel cortex (Garcia-Lazaro, Ho, Nair & Schnupp 2007) found that neural stimulus-response functions were displaced laterally in a manner that was dependent on the mean adapting stimulus. However, the direction of gain change, following adaptation to variance, was in contradiction to Information Theory, which predicts a decrease in gain with increased stimulus variance. On further analysis of the experimental data, presented within this thesis, it was revealed …

Elucidating The Relative Importance Of The Bacterial And Fungal Feeding Channels Within The Soil Food Web Under Differing Land Managements, Felicity Victoria Crotty Jan 2011

Elucidating The Relative Importance Of The Bacterial And Fungal Feeding Channels Within The Soil Food Web Under Differing Land Managements, Felicity Victoria Crotty

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The overall aim of this thesis was to elucidate the relative importance of the bacterial and fungal energy channels within the soil food web and to differentiate and appreciate the differences in niche of the soil fauna when affected by differing land management. Feeding niche of the soil fauna is ambiguous and has been previously determined by observation, inference or biochemical studies. One method that can determine feeding preferences in situ is the use of stable isotopes. Stable isotopes trace the passage of C and N through different trophic levels, both at natural abundance and by the addition of a …

Late Medieval Roof Bosses In The Churches Of Devon, Susan Andrew Jan 2011

Late Medieval Roof Bosses In The Churches Of Devon, Susan Andrew

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Susan Andrew LATE MEDIEVAL ROOF BOSSES IN THE CHURCHES OF DEVON Abstract The extensive survival of late medieval bosses in the roofs of many parish churches in Devon has long been recognised. These carvings escaped the widespread destruction of images during the Reformation through their relative inaccessibility, and yet most have never before been recorded; nor has systematic study been made of their design, their positioning within a sacred space, or the ways in which they may have been viewed and used by a largely illiterate audience. This thesis rectifies this oversight in its detailed documentation and photography of figural …

Application Of Intermediate Multi-Agent Systems To Integrated Algorithmic Composition And Expressive Performance Of Music, Alexis Kirke Jan 2011

Application Of Intermediate Multi-Agent Systems To Integrated Algorithmic Composition And Expressive Performance Of Music, Alexis Kirke

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

We investigate the properties of a new Multi-Agent Systems (MAS) for computer-aided composition called IPCS (pronounced “ipp-siss”) the Intermediate Performance Composition System which generates expressive performance as part of its compositional process, and produces emergent melodic structures by a novel multi-agent process. IPCS consists of a small-medium size (2 to 16) collection of agents in which each agent can perform monophonic tunes and learn monophonic tunes from other agents. Each agent has an affective state (an “artificial emotional state”) which affects how it performs the music to other agents; e.g. a “happy” agent will perform “happier” music. The agent performance …

Eniatype: Transdisciplinary Practice For Methodologies Of Communication, Shaun Patrick Murray Jan 2011

Eniatype: Transdisciplinary Practice For Methodologies Of Communication, Shaun Patrick Murray

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

The thesis demonstrates a rethinking of methodologies of communication through ecological design. Human communication and ecological accountability are inextricably linked in architectural design: the current global ecological crisis underscores this fundamental connection. Within architectural practice the communication from architect to participant or environment is not at all straightforward. This is also true of the dyadic relation between context, design and communication in architectural education. Notational systems within architectural education used as a communication tool have made the composition of architecture an activity like the composition of fiction: the activity of communication. So deep is the connection between architecture and communication …

Ludics For A Ludic Society. The Art And Politics Of Play, Margarete Jahrmann Jan 2011

Ludics For A Ludic Society. The Art And Politics Of Play, Margarete Jahrmann

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This dissertation provides an analysis of, and critical commentary on, the practice of playfulness as persistent phenomenon in the arts, technology and theory. Its aim is to introduce political reflections on agency through the study of playful technological artefacts, which were largely ignored in the recent discussions on game and play. Following the critical analysis of historic discourses and actual studies of play under differing auspices, and in order to understand play as inherently political agency, this thesis’ research question addresses the immersive effects of playful agency in symbolic exchange systems and in the material consciousness of the player. This …

A Cortical Model Of Object Perception Based On Bayesian Networks And Belief Propagation., Salvador Durá-Bernal Jan 2011

A Cortical Model Of Object Perception Based On Bayesian Networks And Belief Propagation., Salvador Durá-Bernal

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Evidence suggests that high-level feedback plays an important role in visual perception by shaping the response in lower cortical levels (Sillito et al. 2006, Angelucci and Bullier 2003, Bullier 2001, Harrison et al. 2007). A notable example of this is reflected by the retinotopic activation of V1 and V2 neurons in response to illusory contours, such as Kanizsa figures, which has been reported in numerous studies (Maertens et al. 2008, Seghier and Vuilleumier 2006, Halgren et al. 2003, Lee 2003, Lee and Nguyen 2001). The illusory contour activity emerges first in lateral occipital cortex (LOC), then in V2 and finally …

The Molecular And Behavioural Ecology Of Click Beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) In Agricultural Land, Carly Marie Benefer Jan 2011

The Molecular And Behavioural Ecology Of Click Beetles (Coleoptera: Elateridae) In Agricultural Land, Carly Marie Benefer

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

The larvae (wireworms) of some click beetle genera inhabit the soil in agricultural land and are crop pests. In the UK, a pest complex of Agriotes species, A. obscurus, A. sputator and A. lineatus, has been identified as the cause of the majority of damage. However, studies on their ecology are lacking, despite knowledge of this being important for the development of sustainable risk assessment and pest management strategies, in part due to the morphologically cryptic nature of wireworms. The ecology of economically important click beetle species was investigated, focusing on UK Agriotes species. The relationship between sex pheromone trapped …

Necessity, Possibility And The Search For Counterexamples In Human Reasoning, Sylvia Mary Parnell Serpell Jan 2011

Necessity, Possibility And The Search For Counterexamples In Human Reasoning, Sylvia Mary Parnell Serpell

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Abstract Necessity, Possibility and the Search for Counterexamples in Human Reasoning Sylvia Mary Parnell Serpell This thesis presents a series of experiments where endorsement rates, latencies and measures of cognitive ability were collected, to investigate the extent to which people search for counterexamples under necessity instructions, and alternative models under possibility instructions. The research was motivated by a syllogistic reasoning study carried out by Evans, Handley, Harper, and Johnson-Laird (1999), and predictions were derived from mental model theory (Johnson-Laird, 1983; Johnson-Laird & Byrne, 1991). With regard to the endorsement rate data: Experiment 1 failed to find evidence that a search …

Population Structuring And Dispersal In The Highly Pelagic Leach's Storm-Petrel: Implications For The Eu Population, Anthony William James Bicknell Jan 2011

Population Structuring And Dispersal In The Highly Pelagic Leach's Storm-Petrel: Implications For The Eu Population, Anthony William James Bicknell

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Dispersal is a fundamental process that shapes many aspects of population ecology and evolution. Dramatic local population declines brought about by anthropogenic-driven changes to ecological processes are unfortunately becoming ubiquitous and increasing the urgency to understand dispersal behaviour in many species. For species where direct methods of tracking movement and dispersal are unsuitable, other indirect methods need to be employed to understand and characterise these behaviours. The steep population decline, due to predation, at the largest EU population of Leach’s storm-petrels Oceanodroma leucorhoa (St Kilda, Scotland), and the potential part immigrant birds have in buffering this threat, highlighted the need …

An Integrated Ecotoxicological Assessment Of The Engineered Nanoparticles, C60 Fullerenes In Different Life Stages Of Marine Mussels, Mytilus Edulis, Sherain Al-Subiai Jan 2011

An Integrated Ecotoxicological Assessment Of The Engineered Nanoparticles, C60 Fullerenes In Different Life Stages Of Marine Mussels, Mytilus Edulis, Sherain Al-Subiai

Other Faculty of Science and Engineering Theses

Studies were undertaken to determine ecotoxicological effects of model manufactured or engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), either alone or in combination with a representative polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (i.e. PAHs: fluoranthene) at different levels of biological organisation (viz. biochemical, histological and behavioural levels) in a sentinel, widely distributed marine invertebrate species, Mytilus edulis. With the current and predicted levels of pollution in the marine and coastal environment, there is an urgent need to establish the potential effects of persistent and emerging contaminants which includes ENPs and PAHs, to protect human and environmental health. In this study, initially, it was aimed to optimise the …

William Peckitt’S Great West Window At Exeter Cathedral, Caroline Sarah Atkinson Jan 2011

William Peckitt’S Great West Window At Exeter Cathedral, Caroline Sarah Atkinson

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

This thesis examines the Great West Window at Exeter Cathedral designed by William Peckitt of York (1731-95). Peckitt was arguably the most important glass designer of the eighteenth century and undertook prestigious commissions at York, Oxford and elsewhere. In 1764 he was contracted by the Dean of Exeter, Jeremiah Milles, to supply glass to complete the restoration of the Cathedral’s glazing and to make the new window, which has often been considered to be his masterpiece. Peckitt’s Great West Window is no longer extant (although portions of it have been salvaged), having been replaced in 1904 with a window, designed …

A Mythography Of The Crossroads:How Is The Severance/Threshold/Return Progression In Both Mythology And Modern Wilderness Rites-Of-Passage Established Through Metaphor? An Enquiry Conducted Through Contemporary Storytelling Practice, Martin Shaw Jan 2011

A Mythography Of The Crossroads:How Is The Severance/Threshold/Return Progression In Both Mythology And Modern Wilderness Rites-Of-Passage Established Through Metaphor? An Enquiry Conducted Through Contemporary Storytelling Practice, Martin Shaw

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

How is the Severance/Threshold/Return progression in both mythology and modern wilderness rites-of-passage established through metaphor? An enquiry conducted through contemporary storytelling practice. This research examines the metaphorical structures within seven selected myths in relation to wilderness rites-of-passage, and the key thematic progression of Severance/Threshold/Return. These rites-of-passage are an essential component of an ongoing programme offered to the general public. The research is primarily creative in that the oral texts have been developed from extant myth over several years, and adapted to a variety of performance contexts. The evolution of these oral texts is examined in an analytical text, which draws …

Communicating The Unspeakable: Linguistic Phenomena In The Psychedelic Sphere, Diana R. Slattery Jan 2011

Communicating The Unspeakable: Linguistic Phenomena In The Psychedelic Sphere, Diana R. Slattery

Other Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Business Theses

Psychedelics can enable a broad and paradoxical spectrum of linguistic phenomena from the unspeakability of mystical experience to the eloquence of the songs of the shaman or curandera. Interior dialogues with the Other, whether framed as the voice of the Logos, an alien download, or communion with ancestors and spirits, are relatively common. Sentient visual languages are encountered, their forms unrelated to the representation of speech in natural language writing systems. This thesis constructs a theoretical model of linguistic phenomena encountered in the psychedelic sphere for the field of altered states of consciousness research (ASCR). The model is developed from …
