Taxonomic Status Of Myotis Myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) And Myotis Blythii (Tomes, 1857) In Turkey(Mammalia: Chiroptera)*, Nursel Aşan, İrfan Albayrak
Turkish Journal of Zoology
Morphometrical, biological, ecological, and karyological data of 156 Myotis myotis and 149 M. blythii specimens collected from various provinces of Turkey between 1974 and 2007 were evaluated. Specimens from Turkish Thrace were referred to as M. m. myotis and the Mediterranean part as M. m. macrocephalicus. Specimens from the rest of Anatolia were assigned to an intermediate form. Due to a steady increase in body and cranial size detected in Myotis blythii from western to eastern Anatolia, we did not assign a subspecific name for the M. blythii populations in Turkey. In addition, body and cranial measurements of this species …

A Brief Review Of Morphological Variation In Natrix Tessellata In Israel: Between Sides, Among Individuals, Between Sexes, And Among Regions, Yehudah Leopold Werner, Tal Shapira
Turkish Journal of Zoology
After introducing the distribution and biology of Natrix tessellata in Israel, on the southern edge of its range, we address its intraspecific variation from the literature and examination of 262 museum specimens. Head pholidosis showed no significant directional asymmetry, but asymmetry in infralabial plates was significantly correlated with frequency of injured tails. Variation in body size showed no clear seasonal growth, presumably due to climatic fluctuations. The variation in number of ventrals (in males, 159-173, mode 165) was not geographical. Females attained 750-800 mm (head and body; mode 600-650) and males 700-750 (mode 500-600) mm. Females had significantly greater relative …

Too Hot To Handle: Climate Change And Agricultural Water Use, Denise D. Fort
Too Hot To Handle: Climate Change And Agricultural Water Use, Denise D. Fort
Faculty Scholarship
The world faces enormous challenges in responding to looming crises in food and water. Responding to this challenge will require flexibility; such flexibility may be impeded by legal institutions. This paper looks at the western United States and discusses the role of irrigated agriculture in that region. Because of climate change, a growing population, declining groundwater, the need to protect ecosystems and other conflicts, the author suggests that all water uses, including long-standing agricultural water rights, need to be examined in light of these changes. Legal systems have tended to serve the status quo, but perhaps the law can help …
The Fundamental Question When Applying The Welfare Principle: "Who Will Be The Better Parent Or Guardian"?, Siyuan Chen
The Fundamental Question When Applying The Welfare Principle: "Who Will Be The Better Parent Or Guardian"?, Siyuan Chen
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
The welfare principle – that is, when making a custody-related decision, the best interests of the child form the first and paramount consideration – is probably one of the cardinal principles of family law in many common law jurisdictions. While the welfare principle is generally considered a wide concept with no exhaustive definition or list of factors, it is submitted that there is an important question – sometimes neglected or misunderstood – that should actually feature most prominently when applying the welfare principle, particularly when joint or no order custody orders seem impossible. The question is simply that of “who …

Imitation Of Basic Hand Preshapes By Fluid Based Method: Fluidics Formation Control, Umut Ti̇lki̇, İsmet Erkmen, Aydan Müşerref Erkmen
Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences
In this paper, a new approach is developed, avoiding the correspondence problem caused by the difference in embodiment between imitator and demonstrator in imitation learning. In our work, the imitator is a fluidic system of dynamics totally different than the imitatee, which is a human performing hand gestures. The fluidic system is composed of fluid particles, which are used for the discretization of the problem domain. In this work, we demonstrate the fluidics formation control so as to imitate by observation basic hand preshaping features. Our fluidic formation control is based on setting suitable parameters of Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH), …
Surface Characteristics Of Silica Polyamine Composites, Jesse James Allen
Surface Characteristics Of Silica Polyamine Composites, Jesse James Allen
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The goals of this dissertation were to explore the surface characteristics of silica polyamine composites (SPC) by elucidating coordination environments, measuring surface stability, and comparisons with analogous materials. Application of SPC materials as supports for heterogeneous catalysts was also investigated. Analytical techniques including NMR (both solution state and solid state), mercury porosimetry, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the materials.
Cobalt was found to irreversibly bind to the chelating polymer polyethyleneimine (PEI). This was due to oxidation of Co2+ to Co3+, which was enabled by the chelate's ligand field stabilization. Detailed analysis of SPC surface coordination environments …
The Economic Impacts Of Wolves On Calf Production On Western Montana Cattle Ranches Beyond Direct Depredation, Joseph Ramler
The Economic Impacts Of Wolves On Calf Production On Western Montana Cattle Ranches Beyond Direct Depredation, Joseph Ramler
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
A novel sample of 18 western Montana cow-calf ranching operations were analyzed over a 16 year time period (1995-2010) using an ordinary least squares linear regression estimation model with robust standard errors focused on the potential effects wolves may have on average calf weight gain. Incorporating calf sex, calf breed, ranch, and year fixed effects into the estimation model, a vector of variables that changed both across ranches and over time were used to significantly explain (F = 59.32; p < 0.001) the variation in yearly average calf weaning weights on sample ranches with fairly good accuracy (R2 = 0.846). The use of hormone implanting (â=24.5), calf age (â=.34), annual aggregate precipitation (â=2.16), annual aggregate snowfall (â=-0.24), annual average temperature (â=4.27), and the standard deviation of NDVI (â=1.67) were found to be significant at least at the .1 level. One measure used to account for wolf presence on sample ranches based on yearly estimated wolf home range data from Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks was found to have an insignificant effect on average calf weight (p = .569). The other measure used to account for wolf presence on sample ranches was found to be a significant factor on calf weight gain. On average, sample ranches that experienced at least one Wildlife Service (WS) confirmed wolf depredation on the ranch, weaned calves that were approximately 20 pounds lighter than ranches that did not have a WS confirmed wolf depredation in the same year, holding all else constant. The results suggest that calves on western Montana ranches that experience at least one WS wolf depredation in a year gain 20 pounds less weight than if there hadn’t been a WS confirmed wolf kill which directly correlates to decreased economic revenue received by affected ranchers.
The Effects Of Large Herbivores On Small Mammal Communities, Plants And Ecosystem Processes In Northern Arizona, Elliott Wentworth Reed Parsons
The Effects Of Large Herbivores On Small Mammal Communities, Plants And Ecosystem Processes In Northern Arizona, Elliott Wentworth Reed Parsons
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Large herbivores are major drivers of community structure and function in many terrestrial systems. Through their direct effects on plants, large herbivores can influence the structure and complexity of habitats, the population abundance of animals that rely on those habitats, and the rates of ecosystem processes within those systems. These manifold impacts on systems are potentially magnifying, as removal of top predators and changes in land use have triggered large increases in large herbivore populations. Although increasing evidence suggests that large herbivores can critically shape the structure and function of the ecosystems they inhabit, few studies have detailed the direct …

The Financial Crisis Of 2008-09: Capitalism Didn't Fail, But The Metaphors Got A 'C', Jeffrey M. Lipshaw
Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works
This is a paper for the Minnesota Law Review's October 15, 2010 symposium, "Government Ethics and Bailouts: Past, Present, and Future." The panel topic is "The Past: Did Capitalism Fail?" The paper addresses not the merits and demerits of modern global financial systems, but instead how those of us who are not financial professionals might make sense of them, particularly when they are in catastrophic mode. The thesis is that the question itself reveals the extent to which the financial crisis has not been so much about whether an economic system succeeds or fails, but the meaning human beings draw …

Does The Charter Follow The Flag? Revisiting Constitutional Extraterritoriality After R V Hape, Chanakya Sethi
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
Jacques Maritain, the noted philosopher and political thinker and a principal drafter of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, once contended that “political philosophy must get rid of the word, as well as the concept, of Sovereignty.” He reasoned as much “not because [sovereignty] is an antiquated concept,” or “because the concept of Sovereignty creates insuperable difficulties and theoretical entanglements in the field of international law,” but because “this concept is intrinsically wrong and bound to mislead us if we keep on using it.” Maritain’s proposal may have been exceedingly bold and his criticisms perhaps too harsh, but they nonetheless …
The Patentability Of Human Embryonic Stem Cells: Is The Inconsistent Application Of The European Union Biotechnology Directive's Moral Exclusion Clause Undermining Investor Confidence In Europe, Providing A Competitive Advantage To The United States?, Stephen R. Donnelly
Dalhousie Journal of Legal Studies
The original justification for Directive 98/44/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 6 July 1998 on the Legal Protection of Biotechnological Inventions (the Directive) was to promote the growth of the European life science sector by harmonizing and clarifying European biotechnology patent laws. As early as 1985, the European Commission had identified the fragmentation of European patent laws as a potential problem. The Directive thus aimed to address obstacles to the unity of the internal market, which would arise if national Member States adopted divergent and uncoordinated policies and legislation in a field of economic activity that …
Emotion, Neuroscience, And Law: A Comment On Darwin And Greene, John Mikhail
Emotion, Neuroscience, And Law: A Comment On Darwin And Greene, John Mikhail
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Darwin’s (1871) observation that evolution has produced in us certain emotions responding to right and wrong conduct that lack any obvious basis in individual utility is a useful springboard from which to clarify the role of emotion in moral judgment. The problem is whether a certain class of moral judgments is “constituted” or “driven by” emotion (Greene 2008, p. 108) or merely correlated with emotion while being generated by unconscious computations (e.g., Huebner et al. 2008). With one exception, all of the “personal” vignettes devised by Greene and colleagues (2001, 2004) and subsequently used by other researchers (e.g., Koenigs et …
What Is Originalism? The Evolution Of Contemporary Originalist Theory, Lawrence B. Solum
What Is Originalism? The Evolution Of Contemporary Originalist Theory, Lawrence B. Solum
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
Debates over “originalism” have been a central focus of contemporary constitutional theory for three decades. One of the features of this debate has been disagreement about what “originalism” is. More worrisome is the possibility that the arguments between contemporary originalists and their opponents, the “living constitutionalists”, are confused–-with each side of the debate making erroneous assumptions about the content of their opponent’s theories.
The aim of this chapter is to clarify these debates by providing a history of contemporary originalism and then developing an account of the core or focal content of originalist theory. The history reveals that contemporary originalist …

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The process of composing a body of artwork was to prove my artistic ability and prepare work for submission to artist-in-residence programs. To achieve this goal, I committed eleven months to this project. Inspiration for pieces came from my travels, interests in American Indian culture, wildlife, trees, photographs, and still-life objects. I devoted as much time as possible in my make-shift apartment studio working on art. Balancing career and home activities was a habitual challenge. I learned to trust my intuition while creating art making choices that reflected my intended message. Fear of public opinion floated through my mind as …
Utilitarian And Industrial Ceramics Of Montana In The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Matthew Gregory Sadorf
Utilitarian And Industrial Ceramics Of Montana In The Late Nineteenth And Early Twentieth Centuries, Matthew Gregory Sadorf
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This thesis answers the question: What type of utilitarian and industrial ceramics were being produced or brought into Montana in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries? This question came from correspondences with the Montana Historical Society where the main research took place. This research was conducted in the Montana Historical Society archives which consisted of files and other sources to find evidence of ceramic production within the state. Further research was done to get an understanding of clays and ceramic production for this period of time. This thesis presents the information by first addressing clays, and then moving into …

Wolves And Livestock: A Review Of Tools To Deter Livestock Predation And A Case Study Of A Proactive Wolf Conflict Mitigation Program Developed In The Blackfoot Valley, Montana, Peter Douglas Brown
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The recent recovery of wolves in the Northern Rocky Mountains (NRM) was met with opposition from the ranching communities throughout Montana. This was not surprising, due to the fact that wolves are feared as a predator of livestock and therefore represent a direct economic loss for ranchers that experience depredations by wolves. Wolves are also revered as a native predator that have top down effects upon natural prey species. This in turn affects the web of plants and animals that make up natural ecosystems. This fact, as well as the strong emotional connection that some stakeholders have to wolves creates …

Organic Tracer Analyses And Receptor Modeling Of Pm2.5 In Fairbanks, Alaska, James Kevin Ormord
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Ambient particulate matter (PM) levels are of great importance to many areas around the world for both environmental and health concerns. It is well known that many sources of PM are anthropogenic in nature, including sources such as the combustion of petroleum products and wood. As per the Clean Air Act of 1970, the US EPA has established a National Ambient Air Quality Standard (NAAQS) of 35µg/m3 for a 24 hour average and 15µg/m3 for an annual average of ambient PM2.5 to improve the quality of air and reduce occurrences of respiratory illness resulting from exposure to high levels of …

Shall We Overcome? "Post-Racialism" And Inclusion In The 21st Century, Sheryll Cashin
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The subject of "post-racialism" has been rather topical since Barack Obama was elected President. I greatly appreciate this opportunity to reflect on the extent to which Americans have, or have not, transcended race. The topic interests me tremendously because for many years I have been an advocate for race and class integration, which I addressed at length in my book The Failures of Integration. In The Failures, my main argument for pursuing meaningful integration is that a nation premised on race and class separation renders the "American Dream" of residential choice leading to upward mobility impossibly expensive and …
