Trichloroethylene Exposure And Traumatic Brain Injury Interact And Produce Dual Injury Based Pathology And Pioglitazone Can Attenuate Deficits Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Andrew David Sauerbeck Jan 2011

Trichloroethylene Exposure And Traumatic Brain Injury Interact And Produce Dual Injury Based Pathology And Pioglitazone Can Attenuate Deficits Following Traumatic Brain Injury, Andrew David Sauerbeck

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

The development of Parkinson's disease (PD) in humans has been linked to genetic and environmental factors for many years. However, finding common single insults which can produce pathology in humans has proved difficult. Exposure to trichloroethylene (TCE) or traumatic brain injury (TBI) has been shown to be linked to PD and it has also been proposed that multiple insults may be needed for disease development.

The present studies show that exposure to TCE prior to a TBI can result in pathology similar to early PD and that the interaction of both insults is required for impairment in behavioral function, and …

Gaze Estimation Using Sclera And Iris Extraction, Prashanth Rao Periketi Jan 2011

Gaze Estimation Using Sclera And Iris Extraction, Prashanth Rao Periketi

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Tracking gaze of an individual provides important information in understanding the behavior of that person. Gaze tracking has been widely used in a variety of applications from tracking consumers gaze fixation on advertisements, controlling human-computer devices, to understanding behaviors of patients with various types of visual and/or neurological disorders such as autism. Gaze pattern can be identified using different methods but most of them require the use of specialized equipments which can be prohibitively expensive for some applications. In this dissertation, we investigate the possibility of using sclera and iris regions captured in a webcam sequence to estimate gaze pattern. …

Participation In Agricultural Governmental Cost Share Programs In The Kentucky River Watershed, Pedro Miguel Fernandes Da Costa Jan 2011

Participation In Agricultural Governmental Cost Share Programs In The Kentucky River Watershed, Pedro Miguel Fernandes Da Costa

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to review existing literature of factors that influence farmers’ decision to participate in conservation programs. This study is also intended to collect county data and information on conservation programs and participation in the Kentucky River watershed region, which can be analyzed and used to draw differences in characteristics of the region that would suggest willingness to participate in a trading scheme for improvements in water quality.

The results suggest that more participation in a trading scheme from some counties than others should be expected. Counties with more farms and larger farms will probably have …

Reconstituting Land Use Federalism To Address Transitory And Perpetual Disasters: The Bimodal Federalism Framework, Blake Hudson Jan 2011

Reconstituting Land Use Federalism To Address Transitory And Perpetual Disasters: The Bimodal Federalism Framework, Blake Hudson

Journal Articles

Scholars analyzing the intersection of federalism and disaster law and policy have primarily focused on the difficulties federalism poses for interjurisdictional coordination of disaster response. Though scholars have highlighted that rising disaster risks and costs are associated with “land-use planning that exacerbates, rather than mitigates, disaster risk,” a more holistic analysis of land-use-related disaster law and policy is needed. This Article provides a more comprehensive framework within which to analyze prospective mitigation or prevention of disaster risk and costs through a rebalancing - or reconstituting - of the respective roles of the federal and state governments in land-use planning. The …

Commerce In The Commons: A Unified Theory Of Natural Capital Regulation Under The Commerce Clause, Blake Hudson Jan 2011

Commerce In The Commons: A Unified Theory Of Natural Capital Regulation Under The Commerce Clause, Blake Hudson

Journal Articles

Scholars continue to debate the scope of Congress’s Commerce Clause authority and whether fluctuations in the U.S. Supreme Court’s Commerce Clause jurisprudence place federal environmental regulatory authority at risk. Yet when one analyzes major Commerce Clause cases involving resource regulation since the beginning of the modern regulatory state, a consistent theme emerges: both the Supreme Court and Circuit Courts of Appeal have consistently upheld federal authority to regulate depletable natural resources, the appropriation of which is non-excludable - key characteristics of a commons. Commerce Clause jurisprudence can be interpreted as treating appropriation of this natural capital, here described as “privatized …

Epilog: Foreign Sovereign Immunity At Home And Abroad, Ingrid Wuerth

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Every author writing on U.S. law for this symposium notes that the extent to which the Executive Branch can make binding immunity determinations is an important issue going forward. In addition to Legal Adviser Koh, two other authors address this issue directly. Professor Peter Rutledge provides a typology of the various roles that the Executive Branch might play in immunity (and other) cases, distinguishing in particular between views articulated by the Executive Branch independently of ongoing litigation, and those expressed with respect to particular pending cases. And Lewis Yelin of the Department of Justice has contributed a major, comprehensive article …

Geochemical Support For A Climbing Habit Within The Paleozoic Seed Fern Genus Medullosa, Jonathan P. Wilson, Woodward W. Fischer Jan 2011

Geochemical Support For A Climbing Habit Within The Paleozoic Seed Fern Genus Medullosa, Jonathan P. Wilson, Woodward W. Fischer

Biology Faculty Scholarship

A long-standing problem in paleobotany is the accurate identification of the growth habits and statures of fossil plants. Tissue-specific analysis of stable carbon isotope ratios in plant fossils can provide an independent perspective on this issue. Lignin, a fundamental biopolymer providing structural support in plant tissues and the second most abundant organic material in plants, is ^(13)C depleted by several parts per thousand, averaging 4.1‰, relative to other plant constructional materials (e.g. cellulose). With this isotopic difference, the biochemical structural composition of ancient plants (and inferred stature) can be interrogated using microscale in situ isotope analysis between different tissues in …

The Law And Politics Of Embryo Research In America, O. Carter Snead Jan 2011

The Law And Politics Of Embryo Research In America, O. Carter Snead

Journal Articles

The moral, legal, and public policy dispute over embryonic stem cell research (and related matters, such as human cloning) is the most prominent issue in American public bioethics of the past decade. The primary moral question raised by the practice of embryonic stem cell research is whether it is defensible to disaggregate (and thus destroy) living human embryos in order to derive pluripotent cells (stem cells) for purposes of basic research that may someday yield regenerative therapies. This essay will explain the legal and political dimensions of the embryonic stem cell debate as it has unfolded at the national level …

Dynamic Cloth For The Digital Character, Martin Furness Jan 2011

Dynamic Cloth For The Digital Character, Martin Furness

All Theses

Cloth simulation tends to have a lingering reputation for being notoriously complex and therefore casually avoided. Very few artists are enthusiastic about a cloth simulator's primary use, and perhaps even fewer would consider cloth simulation for anything other than clothing. This thesis presents typical practices of cloth simulation based on the artistic perspective of a Cloth Technical Director (TD) who worked on the animated feature film and applied case study, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009). Through proof of concept using a generic character, simple props, and commercial software, key techniques are demonstrated to replicate the workflow of clothing …

Differently Able: A Review Of Academic Library Websites For People With Disabilities, Mary Cassner, Charlene Maxey-Harris, Toni Anaya

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

This research is based on the Library Services for People with Disabilities Policy, which was approved by the American Library Association in 2001. The policy identified focus areas for libraries including library services, facilities, collections, and assistive technology. Library websites frequently convey this information to users. Our study examined and compared academic library websites for the differently able. What services do academic libraries offer to the differently able? Is there a basic level of services that libraries identify or should offer? Are websites for people with disabilities easily located from the library’s home page?

Cell Assembly Sequences Arising From Spike Threshold Adaptation Keep Track Of Time In The Hippocampus, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Eva Pastalkova, György Buzsáki Jan 2011

Cell Assembly Sequences Arising From Spike Threshold Adaptation Keep Track Of Time In The Hippocampus, Vladimir Itskov, Carina Curto, Eva Pastalkova, György Buzsáki

Department of Mathematics: Faculty Publications

Hippocampal neurons can display reliable and long-lasting sequences of transient firing patterns, even in the absence of changing external stimuli. We suggest that time-keeping is an important function of these sequences, and propose a network mechanism for their generation. We show that sequences of neuronal assemblies recorded from rat hippocampal CA1 pyramidal cells can reliably predict elapsed time (15–20 s) during wheel running with a precision of 0.5 s. In addition, we demonstrate the generation of multiple reliable, long-lasting sequences in a recurrent network model. These sequences are generated in the presence of noisy, unstructured inputs to the network, mimicking …

Characterization Of Olfactory Sensilla Of Stomoxys Calcitrans And Electrophysiological Responses To Odorant Compounds Associated With Hosts And Oviposition Media, K. Tangtrakulwanich, Han Chen, Frederick P. Baxendale, Gary J. Brewer, J. J. Zhu Jan 2011

Characterization Of Olfactory Sensilla Of Stomoxys Calcitrans And Electrophysiological Responses To Odorant Compounds Associated With Hosts And Oviposition Media, K. Tangtrakulwanich, Han Chen, Frederick P. Baxendale, Gary J. Brewer, J. J. Zhu

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Stable flies, Stomoxys calcitrans L. (Diptera: Muscidae), are economically important biting flies that have caused billions of dollars in losses in the livestock industry. Field monitoring studies have indicated that olfaction plays an important role in host location. To further our understanding of stable fly olfaction, we examined the antennal morphology of adults using scanning electron microscopy techniques. Four major types of sensillum were found and classified as: (a) basiconic sensilla; (b) trichoid sensilla with three subtypes; (c) clavate sensilla, and (d) coeloconic sensilla. No significant differences between male and female flies in abundances (total numbers) of these sensillum types …

Identification Of A Novel Aminopeptidase P-Like Gene (Onapp) Possibly Involved In Bt Toxicity And Resistance In A Major Corn Pest (Ostrinia Nubilalis), Chitvan Khajuria, Lawrent L. Buschman, Ming-Shun Chen, Blair D. Siegfried, Kun Yan Zhu Jan 2011

Identification Of A Novel Aminopeptidase P-Like Gene (Onapp) Possibly Involved In Bt Toxicity And Resistance In A Major Corn Pest (Ostrinia Nubilalis), Chitvan Khajuria, Lawrent L. Buschman, Ming-Shun Chen, Blair D. Siegfried, Kun Yan Zhu

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

Studies to understand the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) resistance mechanism in European corn borer (ECB, Ostrinia nubilalis) suggest that resistance may be due to changes in the midgut-specific Bt toxin receptor. In this study, we identified 10 aminopeptidase-like genes, which have previously been identified as putative Bt toxin receptors in other insects and examined their expression in relation to Cry1Ab toxicity and resistance. Expression analysis for the 10 aminopeptidase-like genes revealed that most of these genes were expressed predominantly in the larval midgut, but there was no difference in the expression of these genes in Cry1Ab resistant and susceptible strains. …

Environmental Impact And Cost Benefit Analysis Of Biological Control Application, Jaime Molina-Ochoa, John E. Foster

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The implications and interactions of the application of biological control agents in the environment, as well as the risks included by the introduction of exotic natural enemies are briefly reviewed. Description of the role of resistance or quality of the host plant to insect pests, and their interaction with biocontrol agents is provided. A need to increase applications or find new alternatives and environmental impact towards non target insects, and the real cost of its use against the benefits is discussed.

Machine Learning With Incomplete Information, Yaling Zheng Jan 2011

Machine Learning With Incomplete Information, Yaling Zheng

School of Computing: Technical Reports

Machine learning algorithms detects patterns, regularities, and rules from the training data and adjust program actions accordingly. For example, when a learner (a computer program) sees a set of patient cases (patient records) with corresponding diagnoses, it can predict the presence of a disease for future patients. A somewhat unrealistic assumption in typical machine learning applications is that data is freely available. In my dissertation, I will present our research efforts to mitigate this assumption in the areas of active machine learning and budgeted machine learning.

Reformulating R(*;M)C With Tree Decomposition, Shant Karakashian, Robert J. Woodward, Berthe Y. Choueiry

School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers

Local consistency properties and algorithms for enforcing them are central to the success of Constraint Processing. Recently, we have demonstrated the importance of higher levels of consistency and the effectiveness of their algorithms for solving difficult problems (Karakashian et al. 2010; Woodward et al. 2011). In this paper, we introduce two reformulation techniques for improving the effectiveness of our algorithm for the relational consistency property R(*;m)C (Karakashian et al. 2010). Both techniques exploit a tree decomposition of the constraint network of a Constraint Satisfaction Problem (CSP), which is a tree embedding of the network. Our first reformulation technique …

Microrna Expression And Regulation In Human Ovarian Carcinoma Cells By Luteinizing Hormone, Juan Cui, Joanna B. Eldredge, Ying Xu, David Puett

School of Computing: Faculty Publications

Background: MicroRNAs have been widely-studied with regard to their aberrant expression and high correlation with tumorigenesis and progression in various solid tumors. With the major goal of assessing gonadotropin (luteinizing hormone, LH) contributions to LH receptor (LHR)-positive ovarian cancer cells, we have conducted a genome-wide transcriptomic analysis on human epithelial ovarian cancer cells to identify the microRNA-associated cellular response to LHmediated activation of LHR.

Methods: Human ovarian cancer cells (SKOV3) were chosen as negative control (LHR2) and stably transfected to express functional LHR (LHR+), followed by incubation with LH (0–20 h). At different times of LH-mediated activation of LHR the …
