Investigations Into The Use Of The M-Protein For The Production Of A Vaccine Against Streptococcus Equi Subspecies Equi Using Chicken Igy, Rachel Lantz
Senior Honors Theses
Strangles is a destructive disease in horses caused by an infection of the bacteria Streptococcus equi subspecies equi. Current vaccines designed to protect horse populations for this infection are only 50% effective at preventing the disease. The aim of this study was to develop a vaccine against Streptococcus equi by targeting the antiphagocytic virulence factor of the bacteria, the M-Protein (SeM18). SeM18 was expressed using the ampicillin resistant pET vector system and purified by metal affinity column using Cu(II). Purified protein was used to vaccinate chickens, and the anti-SeM18 IgY present in the yolk of the eggs produced by …

The Door(S) Of No Return : How The Legacy Of Slavery Impacts Birth Outcomes For African American Women, Jennifer Baxendale Lally
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This theoretical study will explore the health disparity between the birth outcomes for white Americans and African Americans. Over the past five years there has been an increase in the literature coming out of the medical community examining this disparity. The recent interest has to do, in part, with the unresolved mystery these stark discrepancy posses. Through an exploration of historical developments beginning with the trans Atlantic slave through to the current state of African American women's reproductive health I will attempt to expand the understanding of how we as a society might better address the great imbalance in health …
Implementation Of China's 2007 Open Government Information Regulation, Nolan R. Shaw
Implementation Of China's 2007 Open Government Information Regulation, Nolan R. Shaw
UC Law Business Journal
This note reviews the implementation of China's 2007 Open Government Information Regulation both in and outside the courts. Increased information about the workings of government promotes fairness, improved government work, civic participation, and faith in government. This note reviews the unsurprising hiccoughs in the initial implementation of the OGI Regulation, but also notes that most government offices are making positive efforts to comply with the OGI Regulation. The note concludes that the law is an important step in China's move towards greater transparency, but needs broader judicial application to be effective.
Therapeutic Options For The Treatment Of Hypertension In Children And Adolescents, Mary M. Stephens, Beth A. Fox, Lisa Maxwell
Therapeutic Options For The Treatment Of Hypertension In Children And Adolescents, Mary M. Stephens, Beth A. Fox, Lisa Maxwell
ETSU Faculty Works
Primary hypertension in children is increasing in prevalence with many cases likely going undiagnosed. The prevalence is currently estimated at between 3%-5% in the United States and may be higher in certain ethnic groups. Primary hypertension once felt to be rare in children is now considered to be about five times more common than secondary hypertension. This review provides information to guide physicians through an organized approach to: 1) screening children and adolescents for hypertension during routine visits; 2) using normative percentile data for diagnosis and classification; 3) performing a clinical evaluation to identify the presence of co-morbidities; 4) initiating …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
The idea of this issue is to consider the possibility of Babelian performances in the context of scholarly mediations on multilingual realities in translation. The idea came to me as I was reading John le Carré’s 2007 novel A Most Wanted Man. While generic conventions have long prescribed at least one polyglot character per spy novel—often the spy himself—le Carré goes out of his way to represent in his post-cold-war fiction the traffic in languages that the locale demands. Set in Hamburg amid the war on terrorism and the global traffic in capital in the first decade …

Legislative Control Of The Menhaden Fishery, Nicole M. Rovner, Matthew G. Curtis
Legislative Control Of The Menhaden Fishery, Nicole M. Rovner, Matthew G. Curtis
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
This year, six menhaden- related bills were introduced in the Virginia General Assembly. Delegate John Cosgrove (RChesapeake) introduced legislation in the House of Delegates that was identical to Senate Bill 765, a bill that proposed to shift oversight of the menhaden fishery to the VMRC. This article aims to highlight the unique stance taken by Virginia's legislature and explain why this management is better left to the commission responsible for managing every other fishery in the Commonwealth. While there may not be a conclusive link between reduction industry practices and a decline in water quality, Virginia's legislators should recognize the …

Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice,, Katherine Womack
Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest
This article first examines the historical background of the Virginian-American Indian identity after European contact in Part I. This section looks at the early interactions between American Indians and colonial settlers, the treaties that defined American Indian identity, and the first government-to-government relationships between the tribes and colonial powers. It also follows the changing social attitudes toward American Indians. Part II discusses how social attitudes in the early twentieth century about American Indians led to longreaching legal effects for Virginian-American Indians. Part III details the federal recognition process, and discusses how and why it denies Virginia's tribes an equal place …

Shale Gas Rock Characterization And 3d Submicron Pore Network Reconstruction, Malek Elgmati
Shale Gas Rock Characterization And 3d Submicron Pore Network Reconstruction, Malek Elgmati
Masters Theses
"Determining shale gas petrophysical properties is the cornerstone to any reservoir-management practice. Hitherto, conventional core analyses are inadequate to attain the petrophysical properties of shale gas at submicron-scale. This study combines interdisciplinary techniques from material science, petrophysics, and geochemistry to characterize different shale gas samples from North America including Utica, Haynesville and Fayetteville shale gas plays. Submicron pore structure, clay mineralogy, wettability and organic matter maturation were investigated to evaluate the petrophysical properties of shale gas rocks and to determine the impact of organic and inorganic matters on wettability alteration for different fracturing fluids on shale gas rocks.

Managing A Solar Sensor Array Project: Analyzing Insolation & Motivation, Beth A. Yount
Managing A Solar Sensor Array Project: Analyzing Insolation & Motivation, Beth A. Yount
Masters Theses
"The renewable power industry is rapidly growing today and is in need of much data to augment the advancement of the field. Photovoltaic technology, while making substantial improvement over the last 60 years, still has some significant hurdles to overcome. When shading, dust, or damaged cells reduce the power output of one panel, the traditional series-parallel configurations make it so every panel in series with that lower current panel, will also have its current lowered; this lowers the overall power output of the array significantly. Advancements in configurations and converters could change this phenomenon and dramatically increase a solar array's …
Mutation Of The Hof1 Pest Domain Affects Cytokinesis In Budding Yeast, Katherine E. Stockstill
Mutation Of The Hof1 Pest Domain Affects Cytokinesis In Budding Yeast, Katherine E. Stockstill
Masters Theses
"Cytokinesis is the division of a cell into two daughter cells. Cytokinesis failure results in polyploidy, which may contribute to tumorigenesis or cause cell death. The Saccharomyces cerevisiae protein Hof1, which is required for efficient cytokinesis, is phosphorylated during mitosis. The hypothesis that MEN (mitotic exit network) dependent phosphorylation regulates Hof1 degradation, triggering completion of cytokinesis was tested. Hof1 contains a PEST sequence, which is rich in proline, glutamic acid, serine, and threonine, and is believed to be involved in protein degradation. To test the hypothesis, we created two non-phosphorylatable mutants of the Hof1 PEST domain tagged with GFP. The …

Eyes Don't Lie: Understanding Users' First Impressions On Website Design Using Eye Tracking, Sirjana Dahal
Masters Theses
"Websites are becoming more prevalent these days. They need to create a favorable first impression on the users during initial exposure. After allocating their attention to stimuli, users form a cognitive representation of the visual information leading to first impression. Hence, first impression is important to evaluate the effectiveness of a website. This research tries to examine the amount of exposure time needed to form first impression; identify the web design factors that influence the formation of users' first impression; study the emotional responses of users on website design; and finally understand the relationship between first impression and eye movement. …

Assess Commercialization Feasibility Of Algae-Based Bio-Fuel With Dashboard And Scorecard Technologies, Madhur Chopra
Masters Theses
"The growing energy depleting energy supplies and increasing environmental pollution has motivated researchers across the globe to look for alternative energy sources. Various energy sources have been identified but none of them have the capability of realistically replacing the fossil fuels and meeting the current demand. Algae based bio-fuels give some hope but producing them at large scale is a challenge which needs to be overcome.
The underlying objective of this research project is two folds. Firstly, the project aims to assist with the commercialization of algae based bio-fuels by developing Dashboard based and Balanced Scorecard based monitoring prototypes. The …
