Myths And Realities, Isoko Onodera Jan 2011

Myths And Realities, Isoko Onodera

LSU Master's Theses

My work explores the manifold personalities and roles of contemporary women, through depicting different female figures from western mythology. The mythic women in my paintings each have their own personalities, stories and roles to play, which are often conflicting in nature. By having my model act as a mythological character and by replacing the scenes from mythology with a contemporary setting, my paintings emphasize the universal and timeless essence of women. Each painting also utilizes the symbolic use of color to intensify the sensory experience of the viewer. The mythic figures I rendered are Proserpine, Venus, Psyche, Penelope, Artemis, and …

Rights, Needs, And The Creation Of Ethical Community, Natalie Susan Gaines Jan 2011

Rights, Needs, And The Creation Of Ethical Community, Natalie Susan Gaines

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Despite a half-century of dominance by the rights discourse, the supremacy of rights in theories of human obligation has recently come under attack from political theorists. Though scholars have questioned the ability of rights to explain satisfactorily the responsibility we have for the well-being of others, there are few viable alternatives offered. In this dissertation, I argue that a theory of needs provides a better explanation of the intellectual and moral foundations of obligation. Human need is deeply rooted in subjective potentiality, but studies in human psychology have also provided an increasingly universal picture of the needs human beings experience. …

Development And Characterization Of Novel Monoclonal Antibodies For Studying Prion Pathogenesis, Chu-Chun Weng

University of Kentucky Master's Theses

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) recognizing different regions of PrP are potential tools in the study of prion diseases and immunotherapy. We used shuffled recombinant prion protein containing elk and mouse PrP as antigen to produce monoclonal antibodies in mice. We found that mAb 5C6 mapped to a discontinuous epitope comprised of amino acid 132 and 158 (mouse numbering). Monoclonal anibody 9E9 which maps to a unique N-terminal epitope at amino acid preferentially recognized cervid PrP. In contrast, the epitope of mAb 9H9 is located in the C-terminus and only reacted with mouse and hamster. The epitope for mAb 7H11 appears to …

Stories Of The Proterozoic Earth: Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Arcitarchs And Neoproterozoic ¹⁷O-Depleted Barite, Yongbo Peng

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation consists of two independent topics, both critical to understanding Earth history during the Proterozoic Eon. (1) Paleoproterozoic Chuanlinggou Acritarchs: The eukaryotic affinity of acritarchs from the Chuanlinggou Formation has been questioned because of lack of indisputable morphological evidence. In this study, Chuanlinggou acritarchs were examined by jointly using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and transmission electron microscopy. In most cases, an ovoidal group of acritarchs represents a half-vesicle following a complete longitudinal rupture, which is a morphological model different from a whole envelope with medial splits, as proposed by earlier studies. This ovoidal group displays a bipolar morphology, …

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigated the influences of attention and retrospective memory processes on prospective memory. In Experiment 1, participants who processed prospective memory cues under conditions that did not coincide with the processes required for making judgments in an ongoing task showed greater levels of performance at the expense of the attentional resources needed to complete the ongoing task. This differed compared to participants who processed cues under conditions that required the same processes needed to performance the ongoing task. In Experiment 2, the reinstatement of contextual features associated with prospective memory cues from the time of intention formation, or encoding, …

Inhibition And Nucleic Acid Binding Studies Of The Carboxyltransferase Component Of Bacterial Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Brian Benson Jan 2011

Inhibition And Nucleic Acid Binding Studies Of The Carboxyltransferase Component Of Bacterial Acetyl-Coa Carboxylase, Brian Benson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Acetyl-CoA carboxylase is an essential enzyme, as it catalyzes the first committed and regulated step in fatty-acid biosynthesis in all organisms excepting few Archaea and Eubacteria. Acetyl-CoA carboxylase from gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria is a multifunctional enzyme composed of three separate proteins. The carboxyltransferase subunit catalyzes the transfer of a carboxyl group from carboxybiotin to acetyl-CoA, forming malonyl-CoA. The crystal structure of the Escherichia coli (E. coli) carboxyltransferase component of acetyl-CoA carboxylase revealed a unique Zn-domain, presumed to mediate nucleic acid binding, that is absent in the eukaryotic enzyme. Notably, the Zn-domain, adjacent to the active site of carboxyltransferase, makes …

Arginine Metabolism In The Edwardsiella Ictaluri- Channel Catfish Macrophage Dynamic, Wes Arend Baumgartner

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Edwardsiella ictaluri encodes a urease operon and an arginine decarboxylase (AdiA) that are required for virulence in head kidney derived macrophages (HKDM). The urease produces ammonia in amounts sufficient to alter environmental pH from acid to neutral. A hypothetical model was proposed, involving arginine metabolism in E. ictaluri infected HKDM, focusing on bacterial urease, AdiA, a second arginine decarboxylase (SpeA), and agmatinase (SpeB). Using fluorescence based ratiometric pH determination of E. ictaluri in live HKDM, it was shown that E. ictaluri modulates HKDM phagosome pH to above six. Urease and AdiA mutants failed to up-regulate vacuole pH, while vacuole pH …
