Republicanism And The Foundations Of Criminal Law, Richard Dagger Jan 2011

Republicanism And The Foundations Of Criminal Law, Richard Dagger

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter makes a case for the republican tradition in political philosophy as a theory that can provide a rational reconstruction of criminal law. It argues that republicanism offers a reconstruction of criminal law that is both rational and plausible. In particular, it shows that republicanism can help us to make sense of three important features of criminal law: first, the conviction that crime is a public wrong; second, the general pattern of development of criminal law historically; and third, the public nature of criminal law as a cooperative enterprise. To begin, however, it explains what republicanism is and why …

Beyond Belief: Prayer As Communication In Religious Information Seeking, David H. Michels Jan 2011

Beyond Belief: Prayer As Communication In Religious Information Seeking, David H. Michels

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

Prayer role in information seeking has been largely neglected in LIS research. I propose that respondents understood prayer as communication with God. I compared their descriptions of prayer to God with research on interpersonal communication for information seeking. Prayer, for these respondents, met both cognitive and affective information needs.

Private Actors And Public Governance Beyond The State: The Multinational Corporation, The Financial Stability Board And The Global Governance Order, Larry Cata Backer Jan 2011

Private Actors And Public Governance Beyond The State: The Multinational Corporation, The Financial Stability Board And The Global Governance Order, Larry Cata Backer

Faculty Scholarship

Transnational corporations are at the center of extraordinary and complex governance systems that are developing outside the state and international public organizations, and beyond the conventionally legitimating framework of the forms of domestic or international hard law. Though these systems are sometimes recognized as autonomous and authoritative among its members, they are neither isolated from each other nor from the states with which they come into contact. Together these systems may begin to suggest a new template for networked governance beyond the state, but one in which public and private actors are integrated stakeholders. This provides the source of the …

Lemur Catta In The Region Of Cap Sainte-Marie, Madagascar: Introduced Cacti, Xerophytic Didiereaceae-Euphorbia Bush, And Tombs, Elizabeth Kelley

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This is the first study to document the natural history of Lemur catta, ring-tailed lemurs, outside of gallery forest environments: in xerophytic Didiereaceae-Euphorbia, bush habitat that represents over 90% of this species' potential range. Moreover, this study is the first to document ring-tailed lemurs, or any primate species for that matter, as cactus dwellers. Data were collected for 15 consecutive months on two different troops in the Cap Sainte-Marie: CSM) area, which is Madagascar's southernmost region. All-day follows, nutritional analyses, and health assessments were the methods used to test hypotheses on the following themes: a) behavioral flexibility, b) ecology, health, …

Regulation Of Neutrophil Homeostasis By Chemokines Signaling Through The Cxcr2 And Cxcr4 Receptors, Kyle Eash Jan 2011

Regulation Of Neutrophil Homeostasis By Chemokines Signaling Through The Cxcr2 And Cxcr4 Receptors, Kyle Eash

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The number of neutrophils in the blood is tightly regulated to ensure adequate protection against microbial pathogens while minimizing damage to host tissue. Neutrophil homeostasis in the blood is achieved through a balance of neutrophil production, release from the bone marrow, and clearance from the circulation. Accumulating evidence suggests that chemokine signaling in the bone marrow may play a key role in maintaining neutrophil homeostasis. Based on this evidence, we developed a "tug-of-war" model in which opposing chemokine gradients, specifically release-inducing CXCR2 signals and retention-promoting CXCR4 signals, act antagonistically to regulate neutrophil release from the bone marrow. We generated mice …

Role Of Hyperglycemia, Hypoglycemia, And Glucose Transporter 4 On Brain Glucose Sensing, Counterregulation, And Neuronal Viability, Erwin Puente Jan 2011

Role Of Hyperglycemia, Hypoglycemia, And Glucose Transporter 4 On Brain Glucose Sensing, Counterregulation, And Neuronal Viability, Erwin Puente

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

As glucose is the main fuel source for the brain and a major nutrient for peripheral tissues, the brain must sense and respond to changes in blood glucose in order to sustain its own nutritional requirements and maintain whole body energy homeostasis. Disruption of brain glucose sensing results in impaired glucose tolerance, a hallmark in the pathogenesis of diabetes, as well as increased risk of severe hypoglycemia as occurs with insulin therapy. Thus, understanding how the brain senses and responds to changes in glucose is particularly important to individuals with diabetes. Experiments in this thesis investigated: 1) the role of …

The Evolution And Reproductive Ecology Of Oenothera (Onagraceae), Kyra Krakos Jan 2011

The Evolution And Reproductive Ecology Of Oenothera (Onagraceae), Kyra Krakos

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation describes the role of pollination in the floral diversification of Oenothera with an integration of both ecological and phylogenetic approaches. Oenothera: Onagraceae) is a model system for studying plant reproductive biology. It provides excellent examples of shifts in reproductive traits such as pollination and breeding system, features that have been important in angiosperm diversification. These systems are evolutionarily labile; they easily shift between different states. These different reproductive traits may shift in a concerted fashion; therefore, a more comprehensive approach to understanding the evolution of these plant systems simultaneously addresses shifts in pollination and breeding system. Using 54 …

Interactions Between Bmp And Canonical Wnt Signaling Regulate Critical Stages Of The Osteoblast Lifecycle, Valerie Salazar Jan 2011

Interactions Between Bmp And Canonical Wnt Signaling Regulate Critical Stages Of The Osteoblast Lifecycle, Valerie Salazar

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Skeletal development and post-natal bone homeostasis are dependent on the coordinated activity of bone-forming cells called osteoblasts and bone-resorbing cells called osteoclasts. Over 10 million people in the US currently suffer from osteoporosis, which increases the risk of low-trauma fractures and accounts for health care expenditures exceeding $14 billion per year. Osteoporosis is often treated with anti-resorptive compounds, primarily bisphosphonates, which inhibit osteoclast-mediated bone destruction. However, these drugs do not restore bone mass, which can only be accomplished by activation new bone formation, as with intermittent parathyroid hormone therapy. The development of additional bone "anabolic" therapies will require genetic and …

The Role Of Dsrna In Nuclear Differentiation And Remodeling In The Ciliate, Tetrahymena Thermophila, Jason Motl Jan 2011

The Role Of Dsrna In Nuclear Differentiation And Remodeling In The Ciliate, Tetrahymena Thermophila, Jason Motl

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The ciliate, Tetrahymena thermophila, like a handful of other eukaryotes, engages in massive genome reorganization known collectively as chromatin diminution. Part of this process involves large-scale DNA excision known as DNA elimination. Recent data has shown DNA elimination to be dependent on RNA interference: RNAi). Using T. thermophila, I have sought to determine the role of non-coding RNA: ncRNA) in RNAi-dependent DNA elimination through studies of DNA sequences that are to be eliminated called internal eliminated sequences: IESs) and through a conjugation-specific Dicer protein and its putative tandem dsRNA-binding motif: DSRM) protein partners. Studies of the R IES revealed the …

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Non-Catalytic Pol Iv And V Subunits, Ek Han Tan Jan 2011

Molecular Genetic Analysis Of Non-Catalytic Pol Iv And V Subunits, Ek Han Tan

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Among eukaryotes, plants have the distinction of encoding multisubunit RNA polymerases used exclusively for RNA directed DNA Methylation: RdDM) in addition to Pol I, II, and III. In Arabidopsis thaliana, Pol IV is required for the biogenesis of 24nt siRNAs whereas Pol V transcription is needed for cytosine methylation of the DNA sequences corresponding to these siRNAs. The ancestry of Pol IV and V can be traced back to Pol II, and Pol II, IV and V still utilize multiple non-catalytic subunits encoded by the same genes. Genetic analysis of non-catalytic subunits that are highly similar reveals that these subunits …

Relational Selves In Eighteenth-Century Literature, Kate Parker Jan 2011

Relational Selves In Eighteenth-Century Literature, Kate Parker

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

We imagine the eighteenth century to be the time when modern individuals constituted themselves against the forces of communal obligation, when marriage emerged as a union based on singular affection, and when heterosexuality cohered as an ideology. But Relational Selves in Eighteenth Century Literature argues that a libertine logic of communal attraction, spontaneous affiliation, and transitory affection remains central to the literary production of modern selfhood in the eighteenth century. It thus departs from well-established critical narratives that entwine the modern self with the eighteenth-century emergence of sexual complementarity, the companionate marriage, and bourgeois individualism. I show instead how eighteenth-century …

Pelvic Shape, Hip Abductor Mechanics And Locomotor Energetics In Extinct Hominins And Modern Humans, Anna Warrener Jan 2011

Pelvic Shape, Hip Abductor Mechanics And Locomotor Energetics In Extinct Hominins And Modern Humans, Anna Warrener

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Habitual bipedal locomotion in hominins required major alterations in pelvic shape, particularly the recruiting of the minor gluteal muscles to act as abductors, stabilizing the pelvis during walking and running. However, significant disagreement has emerged regarding the effect of variation in pelvic breadth, in both extinct hominins and in modern humans, on hip abductor mechanics and locomotor energetics. The purpose of this dissertation was to test whether skeletal measures of pelvic width are correlated with relevant mechanical dimensions during locomotion, and how hip abductor mechanics may influence locomotor cost. Twenty-seven individuals participated in biomechanics testing, including kinematics, force plate and …

Targeting And Activity Of The Aaa+ Atpase Torsina Within The Endoplasmic Reticulum, Abigail Vander Heyden Jan 2011

Targeting And Activity Of The Aaa+ Atpase Torsina Within The Endoplasmic Reticulum, Abigail Vander Heyden

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

AAA+ ATPase enzymes couple ATP hydrolysis to the exertion of conformational change on a substrate. TorsinA is one of the few AAA+ ATPases that resides within the lumen of the mammalian endoplasmic reticulum: ER). A glutamic acid deletion in the catalytic domain of torsinA causes DYT1 dystonia, but torsinA's function and the basis for disease remain unclear. I show that torsinA is dynamically targeted from the bulk ER to nuclear envelope: NE) upon coexpression with a cofactor protein, LULL1, and that torsinA's movement into the NE is concomitant with displacement of select linker of the nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton: LINC) complex …

The Rise In Elder Bankruptcy Filings And The Failure Of U.S. Bankruptcy Law, John A. E. Pottow Jan 2011

The Rise In Elder Bankruptcy Filings And The Failure Of U.S. Bankruptcy Law, John A. E. Pottow

Articles

Recent empirical legal scholarship on the consumer bankruptcy system has uncovered a marked rise in the proportion of elder Americans filing for relief under the Bankruptcy Code. But these studies have not probed the reasons behind that rise, an omission this Article seeks to address. Professor John Pottow and colleagues recently assembled the new dataset of the Consumer Bankruptcy Project (CBP), the largest national sample of consumer debtors in this country, which he uses to explore the sources of elder bankruptcy. The findings are both striking and ominous. While multiple factors, such as health problems and medical debts, contribute to …

A New Role For Secondary Proceedings In International Bankruptcies, John A. E. Pottow Jan 2011

A New Role For Secondary Proceedings In International Bankruptcies, John A. E. Pottow

Articles

Secondary proceedings-the ugly stepsisters to main proceedings-get short shrift in international bankruptcy scholarship. This article seeks to remedy that deficiency. First, it describes what it argues are the traditional conceptions-both stated and implicit-of secondary proceedings in international bankruptcies. Second, it offers a revised way of thinking about secondary proceedings, proposing to restrict their scope through the use of "synthetic" hearings. Third, it addresses some problems with the proposed new role of secondary proceedings and sketches a possible solution involving the creation of an international priorities registry.

Pretense Theory And The Imported Background, Jeffrey C. Goodman Jan 2011

Pretense Theory And The Imported Background, Jeffrey C. Goodman

Faculty Scholarship

Kendall Walton’s pretense theory, like its rivals, says that what’s true in a fiction F depends in part on the importation of background propositions into F.  The aim of this paper is to present, explain, and defend a brief yet straightforward argument – one which exploits the specific mechanism by which the pretense theory says propositions are imported into fictions – for the falsity of the pretense theory.

Rethinking The Development Of Weapons And Their Impact, Petros J. Katsioloudis, Mildred V. Jones Jan 2011

Rethinking The Development Of Weapons And Their Impact, Petros J. Katsioloudis, Mildred V. Jones

STEMPS Faculty Publications

The article presents information on conventional weaponry and threats posed by it for the environment. Weapons consist of chemical, biological, depleted uranium, landmines, nuclear, jet fighters, and even the conventional lead bullets. It is stated that the manufacturing of biodegradable weapons that don't pollute the environment must be promoted, as they also strengthen the laws which ban the use of toxic and other chemical weapons. A table on correlation with standards for technological literacy, is also presented.

Honors Projects

This study reviews the biological mechanisms and recent advances in preventive dentistry therapies that prevent the formation dental caries, covering both traditional and novel techniques. The techniques covered prevent the formation of dental caries through two therapeutic approaches, either promoting the remineralization of the hard tooth surface or regulating the level and composition of the oral biofilm present in the mouth. Traditional therapies covered include fluoride and calcium treatments that promote the remineralization of the tooth surface, and antibiotic therapies that attempt to regulate oral biofilm levels, such as chlorhexidine, essential oils, systemic antibiotics, and salivation stimulating therapies. Novel applications …

Race, Body, And Sexuality In Music Videos, Erika Vandyke Jan 2011

Race, Body, And Sexuality In Music Videos, Erika Vandyke

Honors Projects

Previous research has demonstrated that women are objectified and sexualized in music videos, and that Black characters are underrepresented in most genres. This content analysis addressed the question of whether the bodies and sexuality of women in music videos were portrayed differently based on their race. Music videos (n=47) were coded for women’s character roles, body size, and visual performances of sexuality, and for Black women’s Afrocentricity. Videos were also coded for specific ways women’s bodies were objectified or sexualized through camera shots and angles. Implications include the idea that Black women may internalize video messages about beauty …

Physically-Based Modeling, Christopher Brinks Jan 2011

Physically-Based Modeling, Christopher Brinks

Honors Projects

Physically based modeling is a growing trend in computer animation. There are many implementations available for this topic. The most basic of these involves the movement of single particles (without a shape) moving through space. This implementation involves the movement of particles that have a rigid structure, such as a box or ball, known as rigid bodies. It features a simple box comprised of 8 points moving through space according to the laws of physics as it makes contact with a surface.
