Skeletal Muscle Gender Dimorphism From Proteomics, Kalina Dimova, Lauren Ann Metskas, Mohini Kulp, Stylianos P. Scordilis Jan 2011

Skeletal Muscle Gender Dimorphism From Proteomics, Kalina Dimova, Lauren Ann Metskas, Mohini Kulp, Stylianos P. Scordilis

Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Gross contraction in skeletal muscle is primarily determined by a relatively small number of contractile proteins, however this tissue is also remarkably adaptable to environmental factors such as hypertrophy by resistance exercise and atrophy by disuse. It thereby exhibits remodeling and adaptations to stressors (heat, ischemia, heavy metals, etc.). Damage can occur to muscle by a muscle exerting force while lengthening, the so-called eccentric contraction. The contractile proteins can be damaged in such exertions and need to be repaired, degraded and/or resynthesized; these functions are not part of the contractile proteins, but of other much less abundant proteins in the …

Diverse Inflammatory Responses In Transgenic Mouse Models Of Alzheimer's Disease And The Effect Of Immunotherapy On These Responses, Donna M. Wilcock, Qun Zhao, Dave Morgan, Marcia N. Gordon, Angela Everhart, Joan G. Wilson, Jennifer E. Lee, Carol A. Colton

Molecular Pharmacology & Physiology Faculty Publications

While the presence of an inflammatory response in AD (Alzheimer's disease) is well known, the data on inflammation are conflicting, suggesting that inflammation either attenuates pathology, exacerbates it or has no effect. Our goal was to more fully characterize the inflammatory response in APP (amyloid precursor protein) transgenic mice with and without disease progression. In addition, we have examined how anti-Aβ (amyloid β-peptide) immunotherapy alters this inflammatory response. We have used quantitative RT–PCR (reverse transcription–PCR) and protein analysis to measure inflammatory responses ranging from proinflammatory to anti-inflammatory and repair factors in transgenic mice that develop amyloid deposits only …

Survival, Habitat Selection, And Body Condition Of The Woodchuck (Marmota Monax) Across An Urban-Rural Gradient, Eric C. Hellgren, Timothy J. Polnaszek Jan 2011

Survival, Habitat Selection, And Body Condition Of The Woodchuck (Marmota Monax) Across An Urban-Rural Gradient, Eric C. Hellgren, Timothy J. Polnaszek

Publications

Urban-adapter species facultatively exploit human-subsidized resources in the urban and suburban matrix. We used the woodchuck (Marmota monax) to study how aspects of autecology in an urban-adapter can vary across a gradient of urbanization. We captured and monitored woodchucks by radiotelemetry in southern Illinois from summer 2007 to spring 2009. We captured 47 woodchucks (19 adults, 19 yearlings, 8 young-of-the-year) during the active seasons, and implanted radiotransmitters in 17 adults and 3 yearlings (13 F, 7 M). Overall annual survival was estimated to be 0.76 ± 0.12, with three confirmed mortalities during the study period. Survival and home-range …

Record Of A Sixteen-Year-Old White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Carbondale, Illinois: A Brief Note., Clayton K. Nielsen, Jennifer L. Swan, Eric M. Schauber Jan 2011

Record Of A Sixteen-Year-Old White-Tailed Deer (Odocoileus Virginianus) In Carbondale, Illinois: A Brief Note., Clayton K. Nielsen, Jennifer L. Swan, Eric M. Schauber

Publications

In May 2004, a dead white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) radiocollared in 1991 was found in Carbondale, Illinois, and was aged at 16 years old via cementum annuli analysis. She was a member of an unharvested, free-ranging population and likely died of natural causes. Given the average longevity of deer in unharvested populations at about 8 years of age, our finding is quite rare. Increased longevity of deer can heighten lifetime reproductive output, which may contribute to elevated deer abundance and concentrated herbivory in urban settings.

Sampling Assemblages Of Turtles In Central Illinois: A Case Study Of Capture Efficiency And Species Coverage, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber, Craig K. Bloomquist, Douglas A. Brown Jan 2011

Sampling Assemblages Of Turtles In Central Illinois: A Case Study Of Capture Efficiency And Species Coverage, Robert D. Bluett, Eric M. Schauber, Craig K. Bloomquist, Douglas A. Brown

Publications

Low and variable rates of capture are chronic problems in chelonian studies. We conducted a pilot study to evaluate protocols for future inventories of turtles in Illinois by comparing capture efficiency and species coverage for 2 devices (hoop net and cage trap), baits (fresh and day-old fish), habitats (lentic and lotic) and time periods . We accrued 402 captures of 378 individuals representing 7 species. At Sanganois State Fish and Wildlife Area (Sanganois), hoop nets produced more captures of more species (n = 231; 6 species) than cage traps (n = 119; 4 species). Statistical tests were equivocal for a …

African Language Publishing For Children In South Africa: Challenges For Translators, Viv Edwards, Jacob Marriote Ngwaru

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

The commitment to multilingualism embedded in the 1996 South African Constitution has wide ranging implications for many aspects of education. This paper focuses on the dearth of teaching and learning materials in African languages required to deliver effective bilingual education, and on the potential role of translation in offering solutions for this problem. Drawing on an analysis of currently available African language books for children and interviews with educators, writers, publishers, translators and organisations concerned with book promotion, it explores issues which have emerged as critical for both the quality and availability of translation. Attention is drawn to the ways …

Homemaker To Seductress: A Content Analysis Of Gender Stereotypes In Online Embedded Advertisements, Danica L. Stith Jan 2011

Homemaker To Seductress: A Content Analysis Of Gender Stereotypes In Online Embedded Advertisements, Danica L. Stith

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Countless studies have documented and analyzed the presence of gender stereotypes in print and television advertisements, but very few have been performed on online advertisements. While the World Wide Web is no longer an exciting new domain for us, researchers are only beginning to analyze the vast number of gender stereotypes that are presented to viewers on a daily basis. The proliferation of gender stereotypes (specifically female stereotypes) is obvious in print advertisements and television advertisements, but do they also abound in online advertisements? In my research, I performed a content analysis of online embedded advertisements, specifically in three types …

A Study Of Turkish And English Refusal Speech Acts With A Secondary Examination For Bi-Directional Language Transferrals, Morgan Jerome Moody

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

It has been found that when students learn new languages, certain aspects of their native language can transfer to their L2 in usage and the L2 may alter the usage of the native language. One method used to examine the possibility of transfers between languages, or compare languages, is the discourse completion task (DCT). The present study examines the linguistic past of Turkey. The current study had monolingual Turkish speakers, monolingual English speakers of North America and bilingual Turkish/English individuals in Turkey as participants. The results of the present study show differences as well as similarities in the way that …

A New Skeleton Of The Cryptoclidid Plesiosaur Tatenectes Laramiensis Reveals A Novel Body Shape Among Plesiosaurs, F. Robin O’Keefe, Hallie P. Street, Benjamin C. Wilhelm, Courtney D. Richards, Helen Zhu Jan 2011

A New Skeleton Of The Cryptoclidid Plesiosaur Tatenectes Laramiensis Reveals A Novel Body Shape Among Plesiosaurs, F. Robin O’Keefe, Hallie P. Street, Benjamin C. Wilhelm, Courtney D. Richards, Helen Zhu

Biological Sciences Faculty Research

Current knowledge of plesiosaurs of clade Cryptoclidia is constrained by a lack of fossils from outside the Oxford Clay deposits of England. Recent fieldwork in the Sundance Formation of the Bighorn Basin, Wyoming, has resulted in the recovery of significant new fossils of cryptoclidid plesiosaurs, including the small-bodied form Tatenectes laramiensis. A new partial skeleton of this taxon is reported here; it is the most complete and best-preserved example of the taxon found to date, comprising a complete dorsal vertebral series, many ribs and gastralia, and a complete pelvic girdle. This skeleton illuminates several unique features of the taxon, …

Contractual And Covenantal Conceptions Of Modern Treaty Interpretation, Dwight Newman Jan 2011

Contractual And Covenantal Conceptions Of Modern Treaty Interpretation, Dwight Newman

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

The Aboriginal rights discourse of recent decades has sought to foster negotiation processes and a new wave of treaty-making. Two decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada, Moses and Little Salmon, speak directly to principles of interpretation applicable to modern treaties with Aboriginal communities that differ from those applicable to historical treaties. This paper seeks to show the commonalities on this issue between the positions of the different judgments in the two cases. It also draws out the contract-oriented interpretation methods to which the judges adhere, arguing that some of these methods are not necessarily wrong in principle but should …

Development Of A Nanoparticulate Drug Delivery Vehicle For Retinoic Acid, Noah Capurso Jan 2011

Development Of A Nanoparticulate Drug Delivery Vehicle For Retinoic Acid, Noah Capurso

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Retinoic acid (RA) is a small molecule capable of shunting developing T cells away from the Th17 lineage and towards the Treg phenotype, making it a potentially useful therapeutic for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. However, therapy can be complicated by systemic toxicity and unpredictable bioavailability, making a targeted drug delivery vehicle for local therapy desirable. A promising approach is the use of nanoparticles, which have been demonstrated to increase potency and decrease toxicity of therapies in a variety of disease models including Th17 mediated diseases. We therefore constructed a nanoparticulate drug delivery platform from poly(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) capable of encapsulating …

Development Of A Viral Vaccine Vector Expressing A P. Falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein Domain To Target Severe Malaria, Sara Eve Crager Jan 2011

Development Of A Viral Vaccine Vector Expressing A P. Falciparum Erythrocyte Membrane Protein Domain To Target Severe Malaria, Sara Eve Crager

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

There are an estimated 300-500 million cases of malaria every year, resulting in approximately 2 million deaths. Malaria mortality occurs primarily in children under the age of five, and is resultant from the development of severe malaria. Attempts to control P. falciparum malaria face rapidly escalating levels of resistance on two fronts: the parasite to anti-malarial drugs, and the mosquito vector to insecticides. Despite current prevention efforts, the global incidence of malaria continues to rise and there is a clear and urgent need for a malaria vaccine. Malaria vaccine efforts thus far have been largely unsuccessful in eliciting robust and …

Design, Synthesis, Biological Evaluation And Metabolic Stability Studies Of Sigma Receptor Ligands, Rohit Bhat Jan 2011

Design, Synthesis, Biological Evaluation And Metabolic Stability Studies Of Sigma Receptor Ligands, Rohit Bhat

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sigma receptors represent a unique family of proteins that includes two subtypes: sigma-1 and sigma-2. Sigma-1 receptors have been implicated in the behavioral and motivational effects of psychostimulants as well as in the pathophysiology of depression and Alzheimer's disease. Sigma-2 receptors are widely expressed on many tumor cells and they are believed to play an important role in tumor cell proliferation. Therefore, sigma receptors are attractive targets for developing pharmaceutical agents directed to the treatment of psychostimulant abuse, cancer, Alzheimer's disease as well as diagnostic agents for cancer and brain imaging. A derivatized 2(3H)-benzothiazolone, (3-(2-(azepan-1-yl)ethyl)-6-propylbenzo[ d]thiazol-2(3H)-one) was reported to have …

Application Of A Novel Boronated Porphyrin (H2Ocp) As A Dual Sensitizer For Both Pdt And Bnct, Ryo Hiramatsu, Shinji Kawabata, Shin Ichi Miyatake, Toshihiko Kuroiwa, Michael W. Easson, M. Graça H. Vicente

Faculty Publications

Background: and Objective Boronated porphyrins have emerged as promising dual sensitizers for use in both photodynamic therapy (PDT) and boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT), by virtue of their known tumor affinity, low cytotoxicity in dark conditions, and easy synthesis with high boron content. Octa-anionic 5,10,15,20-tetra[3,5-(nido-carboranylmethyl)phenyl] porphyrin (H2OCP) is a boronated porphyrin having eight boron clusters linked to the porphyrin ring. To evaluate H2OCP's applicability to both PDT and BNCT, we performed an in vitro and ex vivo study using F98 rat glioma cells. Materials and Methods We examined the time-dependent cellular uptake of H 2OCP by measuring the boron concentration …

Virus-Derived Sirnas And Pirnas In Immunity And Pathogenesis, Shou Wei Ding, Rui Lu Jan 2011

Virus-Derived Sirnas And Pirnas In Immunity And Pathogenesis, Shou Wei Ding, Rui Lu

Faculty Publications

Cellular organisms have evolved related pathways for the biogenesis and function of small interfering RNAs (siRNAs), microRNAs and PIWI-interacting RNAs (piRNAs). These distinct classes of small RNAs guide specific gene silencing at both transcriptional and posttranscriptional levels by serving as specificity determinants. Small RNAs of virus and host origins have been found to modulate virus-host interactions by RNA interference (RNAi), leading to antiviral immunity or viral pathogenesis. Deep sequencing-based profiling of virus-derived small RNAs as products of host immune recognition not only allowed us to gain insight into the expansion and functional specialization of host factors involved in the antiviral …

Oncogenic Potential Of Yin Yang 1 Mediated Through Control Of Imprinted Genes, Michelle M. Thiaville, Joomyeong Kim Jan 2011

Oncogenic Potential Of Yin Yang 1 Mediated Through Control Of Imprinted Genes, Michelle M. Thiaville, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

The transcription factor Yin Yang (YY) 1 is one of the most evolutionarily well-conserved DNA binding proteins that is ubiquitously expressed among different tissue types. YY1 functions as a critical regulator for a diverse set of genes, making its role in the cancerous environment elusive. Recent studies have demonstrated that clusters of YY1 binding sites are overrepresented in imprinted gene loci. These clustered binding sites may function as a molecular rheostat with respect to YY1 protein levels. YY1 levels were documented to be altered in various tumor tissues in conjunction with the transcriptional levels of the imprinted genes it regulates. …
