Using Law To Fight A Silent Epidemic: The Role Of Healthy Literacy In Health Care Access, Quality & Cost, Brietta Clark Jan 2011

Using Law To Fight A Silent Epidemic: The Role Of Healthy Literacy In Health Care Access, Quality & Cost, Brietta Clark

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

The dominant rhetoric in the health care policy debate about cost has assumed an inherent tension between access and quality on the one hand, and cost effectiveness on the other; but an emerging discourse has challenged this narrative by presenting a more nuanced relationship between access, quality, and cost. This is reflected in the discourse surrounding health literacy, which is viewed as an important tool for achieving all three goals. Health literacy refers to one's ability to obtain, understand and use health information to make appropriate health decisions. Research shows that improving patients' health literacy can help overcome access barriers …

Flt3l Controls The Development Of Radiosensitive Dendritic Cells In The Meninges And Choroid Plexus Of The Steady-State Mouse Brain, Niroshana Anandasabapathy, Gabriel D. Victora, Matthew M. Meredith

Publications

Antigen-presenting cells in the disease-free brain have been identified primarily by expression of antigens such as CD11b, CD11c, and MHC II, which can be shared by dendritic cells (DCs), microglia, and monocytes. In this study, starting with the criterion of Flt3 (FMS-like receptor tyrosine kinase 3)-dependent development, we characterize the features of authentic DCs within the meninges and choroid plexus in healthy mouse brains. Analyses of morphology, gene expression, and antigen-presenting function established a close relationship between meningeal and choroid plexus DCs (m/chDCs) and spleen DCs. DCs in both sites shared an intrinsic requirement for Flt3 ligand. Microarrays revealed differences …

Foxp3 + regulatory T cells (T reg cells) effectively suppress immunity, but it is not determined if antigen-induced T reg cells (iT reg cells) are able to persist under conditions of inflammation and to stably express the transcription factor Foxp3. We used spleen cells to stimulate the mixed leukocyte reaction (MLR) in the presence of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) and retinoic acid. We found that the CD11c high dendritic cell fraction was the most potent at inducing high numbers of alloreactive Foxp3 + cells. The induced CD4 +CD25 +Foxp3 + cells appeared after extensive proliferation. When purified …

Synthetic Double-Stranded Rna Induces Innate Immune Responses Similar To A Live Viral Vaccine In Humans, Marina Caskey, François Lefebvre, Ali Filali-Mouhim Jan 2011

Synthetic Double-Stranded Rna Induces Innate Immune Responses Similar To A Live Viral Vaccine In Humans, Marina Caskey, François Lefebvre, Ali Filali-Mouhim

Publications

Adjuvants are critical for the success of vaccines. Agonists of microbial pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) are promising new adjuvant candidates. A mechanism through which adjuvants enhance immune responses is to stimulate innate immunity. We studied the innate immune response in humans to synthetic double-stranded RNA (polyinosinic:polycytidylic acid [poly IC] stabilized with poly-l-lysine [poly ICLC]), an agonist for toll-like receptor (TLR) 3, and the cytosolic RNA helicase MDA-5. Transcriptional analysis of blood samples from eight volunteers, after subcutaneous administration of poly ICLC, showed upregulation of genes involved in multiple innate immune pathways in all subjects, including interferon (IFN) and inflammasome signaling. …

Escape From Competition: Neighbors Reduce Centaurea Stoebe Performance At Home But Not Away, Ragan Callaway, Lauren Waller, Alecu Diaconu, Robert Pal, Alexandra Collins, Heinz Mueller-Schaerer, John Maron

Biological Sciences

The greater abundance of some exotic plants in their nonnative ranges might be explained in part by biogeographic differences in the strength of competition, but these competitive effects have not been experimentally examined in the field. We compared the effects of neighbors on the growth and reproduction of spotted knapweed (Centaurea stoebe) in Europe, where it is native, and in Montana, where it is invasive. There were strong negative competitive effects of neighboring vegetation on C. stoebe growth and reproduction in Europe. In contrast, identical experiments in Montana resulted in insignificant impacts on C. stoebe. Although the mechanisms that produce …

The Green Legacy Project: Evaluating Campus Tree Benefits, Joy Fritschle, Gary Coutu, Joan Welch, Gerard D. Hertel

WCU Tree Campus USA Documents

Trees on our campus sequester and store carbon, mitigate urban heat island effects, ameliorate air pollution, reduce stormwater runoff, improve water quality, provide habitat for native birds and other animals, and enhance aesthetics. Adequate planning and management of this valuable resource first requires a sound understanding of existing conditions. To this end, a collaborative group of faculty, staff, and students at West Chester University initiated the Green Legacy Project. We conducted an inventory and assessment of north campus tree resources and developed a GIS management database. Approximately 1900 trees cover 16% of north campus, half of which are non-native species. …

Ampk Directly Inhibits Ndpk Through A Phosphoserine Switch To Maintain Cellular Homeostasis, R. U. Onyenwoke, L. J. Forsberg, L. Liu, Tyisha Williams, O. Alzate, J. E. Brenman

Biology Faculty Research

AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key energy sensor that regulates metabolism to maintain cellular energy balance. AMPK activation has also been proposed to mimic benefits of caloric restriction and exercise. Therefore, identifying downstream AMPK targets could elucidate new mechanisms for maintaining cellular energy homeostasis. We identified the phosphotransferase nucleoside diphosphate kinase (NDPK), which maintains pools of nucleotides, as a direct AMPK target through the use of two-dimensional differential in-gel electrophoresis. Furthermore, we mapped the AMPK/NDPK phosphorylation site (serine 120) as a functionally potent enzymatic “off switch” both in vivo and in vitro. Because ATP is usually the most abundant …

Influence Of Season And Sex On Terrapene C. Carolina (Eastern Box Turtle) Movements: An Observation Of A Population In West Virginia, Nathalie Caroline Aall

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Environmental conditions influence box turtle movements on multiple temporal scales as they navigate their home ranges. This study focuses on the impacts of seasonal shift and sex on straight-line distances traveled, movements along elevations, and home range sizes in the Eastern Box Turtle, Terrapene c. carolina. Radio telemetry was used to track nine T. c. carolina (5 males; 4 females) from May to October 2010 at Beech Fork State Park in Wayne County, West Virginia. Turtles were tracked once a day at two-day intervals. At each turtle location, microhabitat variables recorded were relative humidity, soil and ground surface temperature, canopy …

Dietary Interventions Against Mammary Glands And Prostate Cancers, Juliana Adedayo Akinsete Jan 2011

Dietary Interventions Against Mammary Glands And Prostate Cancers, Juliana Adedayo Akinsete

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Dietary components modulate normal cellular functions and, in cancer cells, alter processes that lead to cancer and/or its progression. The change in the patterns of human food production and consumption over time has contributed to increasing risk for diseases including cancer. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are classes of essential polyunsaturated fatty acids in the human diet and are required for normal growth and development. Omega-3 and omega-6 fats are thought to be required in the ratio of 1:1 to 1:4 on which humans are thought to have evolved. However, the Western diet has greatly shifted from this ratio. The …

Evaluation Of Toxicological Effects Of Intra Tracheal Instilled Ceo2 Nanoparticles On The Heart Of Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Radhakrishna Para Jan 2011

Evaluation Of Toxicological Effects Of Intra Tracheal Instilled Ceo2 Nanoparticles On The Heart Of Male Sprague-Dawley Rats, Radhakrishna Para

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The growing application of cerium oxide nanoparticles (CeO2 NP) in several industrial products is likely to be associated with increased risk of inhalation and exposure. How the inhalation of CeO2 NP may affect cardiac structure and function has to our knowledge, not been examined. To examine whether inhalation of CeO2 NP affects cardiac structure and function, male Sprague Dawley rats underwent a single intra tracheal instillation of nanoparticles (7 mg/kg body weight). Animals were sacrificed 1, 3, 14, and 28 days after instillation and protein isolates from the hearts were examined for the presence of oxidative stress, autophagy and apoptosis. …

Analysis Of Teens' Attitudes Toward Health Claims On Branded, Prepackaged Foods, Michael J. Mcateer Jan 2011

Analysis Of Teens' Attitudes Toward Health Claims On Branded, Prepackaged Foods, Michael J. Mcateer

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

In the 31 years since Stuart Hall added a defiant read to audience reception analysis, several scholars have broadened its use beyond television discourse. The current study used directed focus groups to attempt the same. Encoding/decoding (1980) revolutionized modern critical thought by expanding audience interpretation. Gone were notions that mass audiences simply bowed to their message overlords in every case without thought or conviction. The oppositional read was a breakthrough with few comparisons. Still present and true to standard critical thought, was the preferred read—an interpretation of text that closely followed authorial intent (Hall,1980, p. 107). The negotiated read yielded …

Narrativizing Success : Attitudes Toward African American Vernacular English In The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Diorio Jan 2011

Narrativizing Success : Attitudes Toward African American Vernacular English In The Composition Classroom, Christopher W. Diorio

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

My thesis analyzes academia’s response to African American Vernacular English (AAVE) features in academic writing and how teachers’ responses to AAVE writing create socially constructed personas for students based on their vernacular dialect features. The results show spoken language strongly influences written language, although the range of dialect use varies from single feature usage to use of multiple features, and occurrences of use are highly localized. While instances of AAVE in academic writing are irregular, instructor response to features shows a pattern of strikethroughs and imperative statements used to correct language. As studies demonstrate such approaches to writing have negligible …

Rediscovering The Maryland Darter (Etheostoma Sellare), Tyler Russell Hern Jan 2011

Rediscovering The Maryland Darter (Etheostoma Sellare), Tyler Russell Hern

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The Maryland darter has not been observed since 1988. Historic populations were located in Deer Creek, Swan Creek, and Gashey’s Run all of which occur in the lower Susquehanna drainage. At these locations, specimens were collected or observed at the lowest riffle of the stream. Some researchers suggest this may be a large river darter. The Conowingo Dam complicates surveying below the facility due to the rapid fluctuations in water levels caused by regulation for power production. Surveying efforts included trawling in the mainstem, and visual surveys in the mainstem, and searching/sampling all historically known locations of Etheostoma sellare. During …

Cancer Cachexia And Cardiac Atrophy In The Apcmin/+ Mice Model Of Colon Cancer, Nandini Durga Prasanna Kumar Manne Jan 2011

Cancer Cachexia And Cardiac Atrophy In The Apcmin/+ Mice Model Of Colon Cancer, Nandini Durga Prasanna Kumar Manne

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Cancer cachexia is a muscle wasting condition that occurs in response to a malignant growth in the body. Cachexia is associated with heart failure and is estimated to be the immediate cause of death in about a third of all cancer patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate cardiac atrophy in the APCmin/+ mouse model of colorectal cancer. Compared to age matched C57BL/6 (BL6) mice, APCmin/+ body mass and heart mass were lower at 12 (11.1 Ѡ4.5% and 7.6 Ѡ2.8%, respectively) and 20-weeks (26.1 Ѡ2.5% and 6.0 Ѡ3.8%, respectively) of age (P < 0.05). Immunoblot analysis revealed that these changes in mass were accompanied by increased activation of protein kinase B (Akt Thr 473: 74.4 Ѡ10.9% and 216.0 Ѡ19.6% ; Akt Ser 308: 161.6 Ѡ31.7% and 367.4 Ѡ41.6% at 12- and 20-weeks, respectively, (P < 0.05)), mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR Ser2448: 23.2 Ѡ13.2% and 44.0 Ѡ16.4% at 12- and 20-weeks, respectively, (P < 0.05)), 5' adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK: 19.6 Ѡ5.2% and 22.5 Ѡ5.5% at 12- and 20-weeks, respectively, (P < 0.05)) and elevated levels of the autophagy regulator beclin1 (4.7 Ѡ3.3% and 9.5 Ѡ3.0% at 12- and 20-weeks, respectively, (P < 0.05)). No evidence of increased cardiac apoptosis, protein ubiquitination or activation of cardiac caspases or calpains was noted. Taken together, these data suggest that the cardiac atrophy that occurs in the 12- and 20-week old APCmin/+ mouse is relatively modest compared to that seen with other tumor models [1] and is associated with evidence of increased cardiac autophagy.
