Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky
Understanding And Using Advanced Statistics, Jeremy Foster, Emma Barkus, Christian Yavorsky
Emma Barkus
The spread of sophisticated computer packages and the machinery on which to run them has meant that procedures which were previously only available to experienced researchers with access to expensive machines and research students can now be carried out in a few seconds by almost every undergraduate. Understanding and Using Advanced Statistics provides the basis for gaining an understanding of what these analytic procedures do, when they should be used, and what the results provided signify. This comprehensive textbook guides students and researchers through the transition from simple statistics to more complex procedures with accessible language and illustration.
Geographic Disparities Associated With Stroke And Myocardial Infarction In East Tennessee, Ashley Pedigo Golden
Geographic Disparities Associated With Stroke And Myocardial Infarction In East Tennessee, Ashley Pedigo Golden
Doctoral Dissertations
Stroke and myocardial infarction (MI) are serious conditions whose burdens vary by socio-demographic and geographic factors. Although several studies have investigated and identified disparities in burdens of these conditions at the county and state levels, little is known regarding their geographic epidemiology at the neighborhood level. Both conditions require emergency treatments and therefore timely geographic accessibility to appropriate care is critical. Investigation of disparities in geographic accessibility to stroke and MI care and the role of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in reducing treatment delays are vital in improving health outcomes. Therefore, the objectives of this work were to: (i) classify …
Energy Functional For Nuclear Masses, Michael Giovanni Bertolli
Energy Functional For Nuclear Masses, Michael Giovanni Bertolli
Doctoral Dissertations
An energy functional is formulated for mass calculations of nuclei across the nuclear chart with major-shell occupations as the relevant degrees of freedom. The functional is based on Hohenberg-Kohn theory. Motivation for its form comes from both phenomenology and relevant microscopic systems, such as the three-level Lipkin Model. A global fit of the 17-parameter functional to nuclear masses yields a root- mean-square deviation of χ[chi] = 1.31 MeV, on the order of other mass models. The construction of the energy functional includes the development of a systematic method for selecting and testing possible functional terms. Nuclear radii are computed within …
Acute Myocardial Infarction Patient Data To Assess Healthcare Utilization And Treatments., Pedro Ramos
Acute Myocardial Infarction Patient Data To Assess Healthcare Utilization And Treatments., Pedro Ramos
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this study is to use a data mining framework to assess the three main treatments for acute myocardial infarction: thrombolytic therapy, percutaneous coronary intervention (percutaneous angioplasty), and coronary artery bypass surgery. The need for a data mining framework in this study arises because of the use of real world data rather than highly clean and homogenous data found in most clinical trials and epidemiological studies. The assessment is based on determining a profile of patients undergoing an episode of acute myocardial infarction, determine resource utilization by treatment, and creating a model that predicts each treatment resource utilization …

Screening And Counseling For Postpartum Depression By Nurses: The Women's Views, Lisa Segre, M. O'Hara, S. Arndt, C. Beck
Screening And Counseling For Postpartum Depression By Nurses: The Women's Views, Lisa Segre, M. O'Hara, S. Arndt, C. Beck
Lisa S. Segre
PURPOSE: In this part 2 article of research examining a model of care in which nurses screen and counsel postpartum women for postpartum depression, acceptability of such a model to postpartum patients was evaluated with a diverse sample of American women. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Descriptive survey of two groups: 691 predominately white postpartum women with relatively high annual incomes (Sample 1) and 132 low-income women, some of whom were ethnic minorities (Sample 2). The surveys were distributed and needed to be mailed back to the investigators. The response rate was 72% in Sample 1 and 30% in Sample 2. …

Nursing Care For Postpartum Depression, Part 1: Do Nurses Think They Should Offer Both Screening And Counseling?, Lisa Segre, M. O'Hara, S. Arndt, C. Beck
Lisa S. Segre
PURPOSE: To assess nurses' views of a nursing model in which nurses screen and also treat new mothers who exhibit symptoms of depression. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: This is Part 1 of this descriptive survey (Part 2 in MCN 35(5)), in which nurses (n = 520) completed a statewide survey assessing nurses' views of a model of nursing care that both screens and treats postpartum depression. RESULTS: The majority "strongly agreed" or "agreed" with the statement "having nurses screen for depression using a brief screening tool is a good idea." Most (67.1%) chose the Ob-Gyn Clinic as the appropriate site …

Biomarkers are indicators of biological processes and hold promise for the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Gliomas represent a heterogeneous group of brain tumors with marked intra- and inter-tumor variability. The extent of surgical resection is a significant factor influencing post-surgical recurrence and prognosis. Here, we used fluorescence and reflectance spectral signatures for in vivo quantification of multiple biomarkers during glioma surgery, with fluorescence contrast provided by exogenously-induced protoporphyrin IX (PpIX) following administration of 5-aminolevulinic acid. We performed light-transport modeling to quantify multiple biomarkers indicative of tumor biological processes, including the local concentration of PpIX and associated photoproducts, total hemoglobin …

Improving The Polymer Injection Manufacturing Process By Using Quality Engineering Methodology, Dotan I. Shvorin
Improving The Polymer Injection Manufacturing Process By Using Quality Engineering Methodology, Dotan I. Shvorin
Dr. Dotan Shvorin
Using quality engineering tools and methodologies are proven to be the back bone of a successful organization. Yet, they present challenges to engineers because in order to use them correctly the engineer needs to rely on his own analysis. From his findings, the engineer would be able to determine the location and the purpose for each unique quality tool or methodology. This paper presents a quality engineered methodology usage in the polymer injection manufacturing process in order to minimize the manufacturing process defects.

Excessive Weight Loss In Breastfed Infants During The Postpartum Hospitalization, Pamela Mulder, T. Johnson, L. Baker
Excessive Weight Loss In Breastfed Infants During The Postpartum Hospitalization, Pamela Mulder, T. Johnson, L. Baker
Pamela J. Mulder
OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in breastfeeding frequency, voids, and stools in infants with weight losses or =7% during the postpartum hospitalization. DESIGN: Secondary analysis of data from a primary psychometric study examining the Mother Infant Breastfeeding Progress Tool (MIBPT). Setting: A midwestern community hospital in a multicultural racially diverse community. PARTICIPANTS: Convenience sample of 53 breastfeeding women and infants hospitalized after birth. METHODS: Data were collected during a chart review; infants were divided into or =7% weight loss groups at 2 days postpartum, and breastfeeding frequency, voiding, and stooling were examined between groups and used to predict a > or =7% …

Graduate Student Perceptions Of An Effective Online Class, Steve M. Bounds
Graduate Student Perceptions Of An Effective Online Class, Steve M. Bounds
Administrative Issues Journal
Online learning is a growing trend within the higher education community. As more universities offer more graduate programs totally online for the convenience of the older student who often has a family and full-time job it is imperative that instructors give attention to what students believe constitutes an effective online class. This paper surveyed 36 graduate students to determine what they considered important in an online course. Students want a professor who uses multimedia effectively, who establishes social interaction among students, who has a well-designed online format, who has an online presence, and who is available to students.
