The Effects Of The Beta1 Receptor Antagonist, Metoprolol, On Methamphetamine-Induced Changes In Body Temperature In Varying Ambient Temperatures, Ricki Lee Harrell
The Effects Of The Beta1 Receptor Antagonist, Metoprolol, On Methamphetamine-Induced Changes In Body Temperature In Varying Ambient Temperatures, Ricki Lee Harrell
Honors Theses
Methamphetamine (METH) induces hyperthermia or hypothermia depending on the ambient temperature. The β1 receptor is involved in body temperature control via brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis. Our objective was to determine the effect of selective β1 antagonist, metoprolol (METO), on METH-induced changes in body temperature in varying ambient conditions. Rats received pretreatment injections of saline, 5.0 mg/kg METO, 10.0 mg/kg METO, or 15.0 mg/kg METO 30 minutes prior to receiving cither saline or 5.0 mg/kg METH injection. Body temperature was measured telemetrically at either 18°C, 24°C, or 30°C ambient temperatures. 10.0 mg/kg METO attenuated METH-induced hyperthermia at 60 minutes in …
The Mobilization Of China’S Legal System And Religious Bureaucracy As A Means Of Combating The Threat Of The Falun Gong, Cooper Reves
The Mobilization Of China’S Legal System And Religious Bureaucracy As A Means Of Combating The Threat Of The Falun Gong, Cooper Reves
Honors Theses
In 1992, Li Hongzhi, an obscure man from the northern Chinese province of Jilin, introduced to the world a set of five Qigong exercises which would form the basis of the Falun Gong movement. In the years that followed, the Falun Gong quickly grew to an estimated 100 million practitioners worldwide that expeditiously spread from China to the rest of the world. Though the group was pacifistic in its ideology, the Chinese government was never quite comfortable with the Falun Gong's presence, and in 1999, the government began a widespread effort to discredit the Falun Gong, culminating in the arrest …

The Kirchner Administration’S Soybean Export Tax Policy In Argentina As An Analytical Tool For Determining Political And Economic Shifts In Latin America Since The Neoliberal Era, Patrick Joseph Woodyard
Honors Theses
PATRICK JOSEPH WOODYARD: The Kirchner Administration’s Soybean Export Tax Policy in Argentina as an Analytical Tool for Determining Political and Economic Shifts in Latin America since the Neoliberal Era (Under the direction ofDr. Jeffrey Jackson)
This study contributes to current scholarship on the political responses to neoliberalism and the current state ofthe political economy ofLatin America. By exploring the complexities involved in politically aligning leaders in the region, this study suggests a need for scholarship that focuses on the policies leaders employ rather than the broad characteristics ofpoliticians. By concentrating on the soybean export tax policy in Argentina, this study …

From Degenerate Monsters To Revenge Of The Big Mac: A Study Of French Anti-Americanism, Jill Peets
Honors Theses
Jill Peets: From Degenerate Monsters to Revenge of the Big Mac: A Study of French anti-Americanism (Under the direction of Dr. Anne Quinney)
Franco-American relations date back to the eighteenth century and are a topic that historians have studied for years. France has never been to war with the United States, yet the French are ardently anti-American. The phenomenon of French anti-Americanism is what this thesis seeks to understand and explain. Through various secondary sources, historical data, and public opinion polls, the thesis examines events throughout time, from the American Revolution in 1776 until the Haitian earthquake in 2010. By …
Climate Change Adaptation: A Collective Action Perspective On Federalism Considerations, Robert L. Glicksman, Richard E. Levy
Climate Change Adaptation: A Collective Action Perspective On Federalism Considerations, Robert L. Glicksman, Richard E. Levy
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The buildup of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and the likely growth in future emissions due to increased energy consumption in developing nations have convinced many scientists and policymakers of the need to develop policies that will allow adaptation to minimize the adverse effects of climate change. Climate change adaptation is designed to increase the resilience of natural and human ecosystems to the threats posed by a changing environment. Although an extensive literature concerning the federalism implications of climate change mitigation policy has developed, less has been written about the federalism issues arising from climate change adaptation policy. This article …
Anatomy Of Industry Resistance To Climate Change: A Familiar Litany, Robert L. Glicksman
Anatomy Of Industry Resistance To Climate Change: A Familiar Litany, Robert L. Glicksman
GW Law Faculty Publications & Other Works
The industries that generate environmental risks in the United States have long been hostile to regulatory programs that increase their costs of operation and reduce their profits. While industry may have been unprepared for, and thus poorly organized to resist, the first wave of federal environmental legislation enacted during the “environmental decade” of the 1970s, it quickly marshaled its forces. Regulated or potentially regulated entities, their trade associations, and their lobbyists began a concerted effort to defeat, delay, and weaken environmental regulation.
This book chapter describes the process by which regulatory opponents successfully relied on free market ideology to couch …

The Story Of Bob Jones University V. United States: Race, Religion, And Congress' Extraordinary Acquiescence, Olatunde C.A. Johnson

On May 25, 1983, the Supreme Court ruled 8-1 that the United States Internal Revenue Service (IRS) had authority to deny tax-exempt status to Bob Jones University, Goldsboro Christian School, and other private and religious schools with racially discriminatory educational policies. The Court relied on the statute’s broad purpose and placed significant weight on Congress’ failure to enact legislation to overturn the IRS policy. A complete account of the legislative history, provided here, both supports and undercuts the Court’s opinion. More importantly, this story provides an account of the dynamic interaction among a Supreme Court critical of racial integration, a …
Food Consumption Trends And Drivers, John Kearney
Food Consumption Trends And Drivers, John Kearney
Articles
A picture of food consumption (availability) trends and projections to 2050, both globally and for different regions of the world along with the drivers largely responsible for these observed consumption trends are the subject of this review. Throughout the world, major shifts in dietary patterns are occurring, even in the consumption of basic staples towards more diversified diets. Accompanying these changes in food consumption at a global and regional level have been considerable health consequences. Populations in those countries undergoing rapid transition are experiencing nutritional transition. The diverse nature of this transition may be the result of differences in socio …

The WHO (2001) recommends exclusive breast-feeding and delaying the introduction of solid foods to an infant’s diet until 6 months postpartum. However, in many countries, this recommendation is followed by few mothers, and earlier weaning onto solids is a commonly reported global practice. Therefore, this prospective, observational study aimed to assess compliance with the WHO recommendation and examine weaning practices, including the timing of weaning of infants, and to investigate the factors that predict weaning at #12 weeks. From an initial sample of 539 pregnant women recruited from the Coombe Women and Infants University Hospital, Dublin, 401 eligible mothers were …

The processing of the Amyloid Precursor Protein (APP) is a critical event in the formation of amyloid plaques which are composed of the 4kDa amyloid beta-peptide (Abeta). Processing of APP occurs through a non-amyloidogenic pathway, mediated by initial alpha-secretase cleavage or through an amyloidogenic pathway via sequential cleavage by beta- and gamma-secretase enzymes, which produces Abeta peptides. Currently, the diagnosis of probable or possible Alzheimer's disease (AD) is primarily based on neuropsychological and neuroradiological assessment. Recent reports indicate that platelet beta-secretase activity is moderately increased in patients with AD and mild cognitive impairment (MCI). To our knowledge platelet alpha-secretase activity …
Genetic Connections Between Neurological Disorders And Cholesterol Metabolism, Ingemar Bjorkhem, Valerio Leoni, Steve Meaney
Genetic Connections Between Neurological Disorders And Cholesterol Metabolism, Ingemar Bjorkhem, Valerio Leoni, Steve Meaney
Articles
Cholesterol is an essential component of both the peripheral and central nervous systems of mammals. Over the last decade, evidence has accumulated that disturbances in cholesterol metabolism are associated with the development of various neurological conditions. In addition to genetically defined defects in cholesterol synthesis, which will be covered in another review in this Thematic Series, defects in cholesterol metabolism (cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis) and intracellular transport (Niemann Pick Syndrome) lead to neurological disease. A subform of hereditary spastic paresis (type SPG5) and Huntington's disease are neurological diseases with mutations in genes that are of importance for cholesterol metabolism. Neurodegeneration is generally …
Selective Solubilisation Of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Sourabhi Debnath
Selective Solubilisation Of Single Walled Carbon Nanotubes Using Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Sourabhi Debnath
Doctoral
Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTS) are proposed to be one of the most promising nanomaterials, with unique electronic and mechanical properties which lend themselves to a variety of applications. In all cases the quality of the SWCNT material is important, and for some applications it is paramount. Despite sustained efforts, all currently known SWCNT synthetic techniques generate significant quantities of impurities. They also grow in bundles or ropes and are largely insoluble in common organic solvents. SWCNTS can have a range of structures and their electronic properties (metallic or semiconducting) depend on their structure and as well on their diameters. Currently …
A Phenomenographic Study Of Introductory Physics Students: Approaches To Their Learning And Perceptions Of Their Learning Environment In A Physics Problem-Based Learning Environment, Paul Irving
Doctoral
This phenomenographic study describes students’ approaches to learning and their perceptions of the learning environment in an introductory physics course which is taught using a problem-based learning approach. This research builds on previous studies which showed that these students develop a greater conceptual knowledge than their counterparts in a more traditional learning environment while others showed very little development even though they engaged fully with the pedagogy. This study aimed to examine and describe the students’ approaches to learning. The definitions of surface, strategic and deep approaches to learning are not appropriate in this context and could not be applied …
Efficacy Of Ozone And Ultrasound For Microbial Reduction In Fruit Juice, Sonal Patil
Efficacy Of Ozone And Ultrasound For Microbial Reduction In Fruit Juice, Sonal Patil
Doctoral
Concerns have arisen regarding the microbiological safety of fruit juices due to a number of outbreaks associated with pathogens. Non-thermal technologies for the inactivation of microorganisms are of increasing interest to the food industry for the control of spoilage as well as safety concerns. The objective of this thesis was to investigate the efficacy of ultrasound and ozone treatments for control of microbial issues associated with fruit juices. Inactivation of Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922, NCTC 12900) using power ultrasound was found to be influenced by strain, prior acid adaptation and suspension liquid, but the effect was negated at the higher …

To compare macronutrient intakes of Swedish children and adolescents to population goals; to identify the major sources of energy, fat, saturated fat and sucrose; and to simulate the effect adherence to current food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG) would have on saturated fat and sucrose intakes. Cross-sectional study. From 24 h recall data, food groups contributing most to energy, fat, saturated fat and sucrose were identified. Based on the prevailing consumption of foods mentioned in the FBDG, we simulated five scenarios: changes in milk and yoghurt; cheese; energy-dense, nutrient-dilute foods; soft drinks; and burger and sausage consumption. Stockholm and Örebro (Sweden) in …
