À La Recherche Du Temps Perdu: Russian -‐‑Sja And -‐‑En-‐‑ In Asbmt, Leonard H. Babby

Russian Language Journal

In 1973-‐‑74, Dick Brecht and I wrote an article entitled The Syntax of Voice in Russian, which appeared in Language in 1975 (hereafter B&B 1975). Since then Dick and I have gone off in different directions, but I have returned periodically to the rich vein of data and problems in our paper and return to them again here, this time within the frame-‐‑ work of the argument-‐‑structure based theory of morphosyntax (ASBMT) proposed in Babby 2009, 2010a, 2010b, and 2011, which has enabled me, after the passage of 35 years, to pinpoint what was right in the Syntax of Voice …

Some Thoughts On The Societal Impact Of Linguistics, Arto Mustajoki Jan 2010

Some Thoughts On The Societal Impact Of Linguistics, Arto Mustajoki

Russian Language Journal

Today, scholars are obliged to justify the necessity of research in their own fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the channels of societal impact of linguistic research. In other words, I will try to answer the following question: in what ways is the work of scholars dealing with language(s) useful for society? The paper is based on my articles published in Finnish (Mustajoki 2005, 2011) and on oral presentations in various academic circles. I will first discuss some general ideas concerning the societal impact of research and researchers. I will then try to apply these ideas to …

On The Status Of Russian Perfective Passives In –Sja, James S. Levine Jan 2010

On The Status Of Russian Perfective Passives In –Sja, James S. Levine

Russian Language Journal

In an early and important study of voice in Russian, Babby and Brecht (1975) introduced significant theoretical revisions to prevailing transformational analyses of passives in Russian. In their article, B&B demonstrated the inadequacies of previous analyses, which posited a single “passive transformation” for Russian. Instead, they proposed an analysis of voice that achieved maximum generality by accounting in a principled way for the syntactic relations between active, passive, and middle sentences. In particular, they argued that passives formed with the suffix –en-‐‑ must be derived differently from passives in –sja, the former resulting from a lexical process that derived –en-‐‑adjectives …

Seeking Alternatives To Marijuana Prohibition, Rachel Kiesel Jan 2010

Seeking Alternatives To Marijuana Prohibition, Rachel Kiesel

Honors Program Theses

Marijuana legality is a highly controversial social issue. Although our society continues to be bombarded by negative images of drugs and crime in the media, cultural perceptions regarding marijuana have been changing over the past few years. Today, many people are more accepting of marijuana use than ever before. As a result of these shifting attitudes, several states have taken the initiative to pass new legislation on regulating marijuana with reduced restrictions.

An Archaeological Model Of Northern Warren County Prehistory With Survey Data, Whitney Alina Mark

Honors Program Theses

The following paper is an outline of prehistoric cultures within Central Iowa and more specifically northern Warren County. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the archaeological evidence near Middle River and the creation of a model to explain the location of this evidence. The model was created in order to predict what types of sites are common as well as what topographical locations they are located on. The number and location of known sites, as well as their cultural identification was analyzed in order to determine the probability that cultural remains could be found on the survey …

The Mirage Of Non-State Governance, Ralf Michaels Jan 2010

The Mirage Of Non-State Governance, Ralf Michaels

Utah Law Review

Postulating non-state governance challenges the state’s monopoly on the creation and adjudication of law, but it does not challenge the framework in which we think of governance, or government, as related and linked to the state. Nonstate governance is merely the flipside of a state government. Ironically, such a conception does not weaken the importance of the state for governance, but perpetuates it. It changes the state from a tacit background assumption to the prime criterion with which we differentiate between kinds of governance. This limits in crucial ways our ability to think creatively about governance. When we talk of …

Swirls And Whorls: Litigating Post-Conviction Claims Of Fingerprint Misidentification After The Nas Report, Jacqueline Mcmurtrie Jan 2010

Swirls And Whorls: Litigating Post-Conviction Claims Of Fingerprint Misidentification After The Nas Report, Jacqueline Mcmurtrie

Utah Law Review

A petitioner seeking to challenge a conviction that was based upon a fingerprint match will face difficulties, even when armed with the findings of the NAS Report. In the areas described above, CBLA and SBS, there were “insiders” who began to challenge the science underlying the forensic conclusions reached by experts in the field. The community of latent print examiners has yet yielded a William Tobin, or multiple experts such as those in the Edmunds case who testified they had changed their opinion about the scientific validity of the conclusions they had once endorsed. The committee convened by Congress to …

Long Overdue: Utah’S Incomplete Approach To Eyewitness Identification And Suggestions For Reform, Steven J. Joffee Jan 2010

Long Overdue: Utah’S Incomplete Approach To Eyewitness Identification And Suggestions For Reform, Steven J. Joffee

Utah Law Review

On January 17, 1985, Ronald Cotton, a twenty-two-year-old black man, was convicted of rape and sentenced to life in prison. That evening, his alleged victim, Jennifer Thompson, “toasted her victory with champagne.” Approximately six months earlier, in July of 1984, when Thompson was a twenty-two-year-old college student, a black male had broken into Thompson’s apartment, “held a knife to her throat, and forced her to submit to sexual intercourse.” During the course of the horrific attack, Thompson vowed to stay alert so that she could later help police catch her attacker and put him away forever. At one point during …

A Ticking Time Bomb? University Data Privacy Policies And Attorney-Client Confidentiality In Law School Settings, Gregory C. Sisk, Nicholas Halbur Jan 2010

A Ticking Time Bomb? University Data Privacy Policies And Attorney-Client Confidentiality In Law School Settings, Gregory C. Sisk, Nicholas Halbur

Utah Law Review

Looking only at the specific problem of the attorney-client privilege, to say that university data privacy policies that fail to explicitly protect professional confidences are a ticking time bomb (as suggested by the title of this Article) may be hyperbolic. Unlike the “Surveillance Society” that has taken hold in the American corporate workplace, most American universities remain committed to the principle of academic freedom and encourage largely uninhibited exploration of ideas. The educational culture itself may foster a greater expectation of privacy in use of information technology—notwithstanding contradictory language in a formal university data privacy policy. If an outside challenge …

Blood/Lust: Freud And The Trauma Of Killing In War, Nolen Gertz Jan 2010

Blood/Lust: Freud And The Trauma Of Killing In War, Nolen Gertz

Publications and Research

During World War I, Sigmund Freud and his followers held a special symposium in Budapest entitled "Psycho-Analysis and the War Neuroses." Their contributions centered on the importance of trying to understand what can cause a soldier to become traumatized in war by investigating the individual factors of each case as opposed to merely the situational factors. Thus by redefining such ambiguous illnesses as shell shock and war strain into the Freudian framework of the traumatic neuroses, they were able to do what the neurologists could not — explain the meaning behind the soldiers' symptoms and treat them with successful results. …

Teachers’ Attitudes Towards English Language Learners In Rural Schools Implementing Sheltered English And English As A Second Language Compared To Teachers’ Attitudes In Schools With No Clearly Defined Model Of Language Services, Mary R. Smith

Student Work

The need for accurate information about teachers' attitudes towards ELL student services in low incidence districts is essential. The purpose of this posttest-only comparative efficacy study was to determine elementary ( n = 28) and secondary teachers' (n = 28) reported attitudes on the Survey of Teachers in Rural, Low Incidence ELL School Districts (Reeves, 2006) about (a) general beliefs, (b) practices, (c) impact of inclusion, and (d) teacher supports towards English Language Learners in rural low incidence schools with a dual program model of Sheltered English and English as a Second Language compared to elementary ( n = 28) …

The Effect Of Explicitly Differentiated Reading Instruction Groups On Eighth-Grade Students’ Achievement, Behavior, And Engagement In A School Seeking To Reestablish Adequate Yearly Progress Benchmarks, Sean P. Dunphy Jan 2010

The Effect Of Explicitly Differentiated Reading Instruction Groups On Eighth-Grade Students’ Achievement, Behavior, And Engagement In A School Seeking To Reestablish Adequate Yearly Progress Benchmarks, Sean P. Dunphy

Student Work

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of explicitly differentiated reading instruction groups on eighth-grade students' achievement, behavior, and engagement in a school seeking to reestablish adequate yearly progress benchmarks. The results of this study supported student participation in explicitly differentiated reading instruction groups. Because students in High Reading Ability (n = 25), Middle Reading Ability (n = 25), and Low Reading Ability (n = 25) groups maintained average to above average achievement test scores on several measures with commensurate classroom grade performance, and appropriate behavior and engagement to support school success during eighth grade, the results …

Acquiring The High Vowel Contrast In Quebec French: How Assibilation Helps, Wendy Baker, Laura Catharine Smith Jan 2010

Acquiring The High Vowel Contrast In Quebec French: How Assibilation Helps, Wendy Baker, Laura Catharine Smith

Faculty Publications

In Quebec French (QF), /t/ and /d/ are assibilated to [ts] and [dz] before /i/ and /y/, but not before /u/. Since the /y/-/u/ contrast is known to be difficult for English speakers learning French as a second language (L2), we examine whether L2 learners of French who have acquired the assibilation rule have any advantage in producing and perceiving the French /i/-/y/-/u/ contrast over L2 learners who produce less or no assibilation in their L2 French. Results demonstrate that L2 learners who are strong assibilators are better at producing vowels similarly to native QF speakers than weak assibilators, but …

"Youth are never taken seriously, and we sometimes have ideas that would be good for all people." ~ Alex, Croatia

"... Some things do depend on us; war, consequences of the war, poverty; the influence of the church interfering with the state affairs, which must not be so. " ~ Ljubicia, Serbia

The State of Utah has one of the highest food insecurity rates in the nation. It is ranked in the top 4% in the nation of being food insecure and 34% of the state is considered low-income, defined as at or below 185% of poverty level (LeBlanc, Christofferson, & Christensen, 2008). These trends place Utah’s low-income population at increased risk of obesity and chronic disease. The Center of Hunger and Poverty reported a high rate of obesity among low-income individuals, with hunger, poverty, and obesity frequently occurring at the same time (USDA, 2009). With limited income, quantity is often more …

Almodóvar's Female Odyssey, Corinne Ondine Pache Jan 2010

Almodóvar's Female Odyssey, Corinne Ondine Pache

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Although Pedro Almodóvar's 2006 film Volver does not refer to Homeric epic, Odyssean motifs are ubiquitous in the narrative. As they must be, insofar as Homer's poem is the foundational text in Western culture of the very idea of homecoming, or nostos. A meditation on the notion of return (Spanish volver), the film focuses on the modern experience of the family, the connections between husbands and wives, parents and children, memory and identity. Irrespective of intention on Almodóvar's part, to raise and to represent the phenomenon of return is to start a conversation with Homer's Odyssey, which …

Cypro-Minoan, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld Jan 2010

Cypro-Minoan, Nicolle E. Hirschfeld

Classical Studies Faculty Research

There are approximately two hundred identified Cypro-Minoan inscriptions (excluding potmarks). Most are very short (one or two sequences totaling fewer than ten signs). They are impressed, incised, or painted on a variety of objects and materials in an assortment of lengths and formats and are found in a diversity of contexts widely dispersed across the island of Cyprus and at Ras Shamra-Ugarit on the mainland. They span the entire Late Bronze Age (16th-11th centuries BC) and perhaps continue into the very early Iron Age.

The earliest discoveries were made at the end of the 19th century; most recently, Cypro-Minoan has …

Critical Moments In Classical Literature [Review], Lawrence Kim Jan 2010

Critical Moments In Classical Literature [Review], Lawrence Kim

Classical Studies Faculty Research

Critical Moments in Classical Literature is a curious book; deeply learned, elegantly written, and filled with subtle observations on a vast array of texts, but also somewhat diffuse, elusive, and in the end frustrating. On the face of it, the subtitle, Studies in the Ancient View of Literature and its Uses, is a good description of the book’s six chapters, each focused on a text constituting a ‘critical moment’ in ancient literary criticism: (1) Aristophanes’ Frogs, (2) Euripides’ Cyclops, (4) Dionysius of Halicarnassus’ On Imitation, (5) Longinus’ On the Sublime, and (6) Plutarch’s How the …

The Moralizing Distance In Adam Smith: The Theory Of Moral Sentiments As Possible Praise Of Commerce, Maria Pia Paganelli Jan 2010

The Moralizing Distance In Adam Smith: The Theory Of Moral Sentiments As Possible Praise Of Commerce, Maria Pia Paganelli

Economics Faculty Research

The Theory of Moral Sentiments can be read as a book praising commerce. In The Theory of Moral Sentiments, Adam Smith claims that viewing oneself from a distance decreases the natural tendency toward self-deception and increases the propriety of one’s behavior. In front of strangers and distant acquaintances, an individual would generally restrain the more self-indulgent and excessive passions and be more composed than in front of family and close friends. Frequent exposure to strangers fosters the habit of propriety - the base of moral behavior. Commerce enlarges one’s opportunities to interact with strangers and introduces distance in interpersonal relationships. …
