Evaluation Of Hydro-Mechanical Pulsation For Rocket Injector Research, Matthew B. Wilson Jan 2010

Evaluation Of Hydro-Mechanical Pulsation For Rocket Injector Research, Matthew B. Wilson

Theses

The Propulsion Research Center at the University of Alabama in Huntsville has designed and built a hydro-mechanical pulsator to simulate the pressure fluctuations created by high frequency combustion instability. The pressure response characteristics were evaluated in an atmospheric test rig using filtered de-ionized water as the working fluid. The outlet of the pulsator was connected to a swirl injector post to provide downstream flow resistance. Previous low pressure and mass flow experimental data revealed a complex relationship between the control parameters and the pulsation response. For each test, the average mass flow rates of the waste water, water lost through …

Cold Flow Simulation Of Vortex Shedding In A Segmented Solid Rocket Motor, Rasheed Durojaye Jan 2010

Cold Flow Simulation Of Vortex Shedding In A Segmented Solid Rocket Motor, Rasheed Durojaye

Theses

Combustion instabilities are a major problem in large solid rocket boosters. They are responsible for exciting undesirable oscillations in the propellant burn rate. It is believed that vortex shedding from upstream inhibitors is one of the phenomena responsible for the onset of these instabilities. Vortex shedding frequencies are time dependent due to the unsteady nature of the flow inside the rocket motor. When one of these frequencies coincides with a structural frequency, the oscillations can increase substantially. The protruding inhibitors are caused by their slow burn rate compared to that of the fuel. In the current research, cold flow simulations …

A Study Of Hough Transform For Weld Extraction, Rakesh Gunaseelan Jan 2010

A Study Of Hough Transform For Weld Extraction, Rakesh Gunaseelan

LSU Master's Theses

The process of joining metals is called welding. At times, selecting a poor quality material or improper usage of welding technologies may cause defects in welded joints. Some of these welded joints have to be tested nondestructively, because their failure can cause lot of damage, for instance in power plants. Radiography is a very common method for non-destructive testing of welds. It is done by certified weld inspectors who have knowledge about weld flaws, looking at the radiograph of the welded joint with naked eye. The judgment of the weld inspector can be biased; subjective, because it is dependent on …

Communicating Conservation: Public Relations Practitioners' Communication Efforts To Inform The Public Of The Detriments Of Coastal Erosion And Wetlands Loss, Stephanie Ellene Shaddock Jan 2010

Communicating Conservation: Public Relations Practitioners' Communication Efforts To Inform The Public Of The Detriments Of Coastal Erosion And Wetlands Loss, Stephanie Ellene Shaddock

LSU Master's Theses

Coastal erosion is a serious problem that directly affects Louisiana and indirectly affects the entire United States. Between 1990 and 2000, Louisiana lost 24 square miles of land per year, which equals an approximate football field lost every 38 minutes (Barras, Bourgeois, & Handley, 1994). Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005 accelerated this land loss by transforming 217 square miles of marsh into open water (United States Geological Survey, 2006). As a leader in seafood, oil, and gas production, and shipping state, Louisiana and the nation have much at stake with continued land loss. To inform Louisiana’s citizens and a …

Why Do Firms Go Public?, James C. Brau Jan 2010

Why Do Firms Go Public?, James C. Brau

Faculty Publications

Why entrepreneurs choose to conduct an IPO has received relatively little attention when compared to other IPO topics such as initial underpricing and the long-run performance of IPOs. In this chapter, I summarize, analyze, and expand the current discussion on why firms go public. I begin by discussing the theoretical underpinnings and testable hypotheses offered thus far in the academic literature. I then discuss the empirical evidence for (and against) each of these potential explanations after presenting the intuition behind them. I focus on two types of empirical research: a) large-sample publicly-available financial and stock data and b) proprietary surveydata. …

Psychological Ownership And The Individual Appropriation Of Technology, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen Jan 2010

Psychological Ownership And The Individual Appropriation Of Technology, James Gaskin, Kalle Lyytinen

Faculty Publications

We use information technology to accomplish a significant portion of our daily tasks. The way individuals choose to use technology varies as much as the outcomes of their usage. Appropriation – the way that people choose or learn to use technology – has been explored at a group level to explain group behaviors and performance. Although appropriation antecedents and outcomes have been investigated in many studies, none has attempted to explain the motivations or factors influencing the individual appropriation of technology; nor has extant research discovered the impacts resulting from individual appropriation. In this exploratory paper, we inquire within this …

German Enemy Aliens And The Decine Of British Liberalism In World War I, Ansley L. Macenczak Jan 2010

German Enemy Aliens And The Decine Of British Liberalism In World War I, Ansley L. Macenczak

LSU Master's Theses

After the start of World War I in 1914, the British government began internment of enemy alien men, disrupting the large German population settled in the country. This move seemed to be in complete contrast in comparison to the lax immigration laws during the long nineteenth century, when Great Britain had one of the most liberal immigration laws of any country in Europe. The British public was proud of this tradition and Britain’s image as an open haven for refugees and individuals seeking a better life. Foreigners were attracted to Britain by its liberal traditions, most clearly exemplified by the …

Innovations And Barriers In Health Microinsurance, Sheila Leatherman, Lisa Jones Christensen, Jeanna Holtz Jan 2010

Innovations And Barriers In Health Microinsurance, Sheila Leatherman, Lisa Jones Christensen, Jeanna Holtz

Faculty Publications

Health microinsurance (HMI) offers a promising way to mitigate the risks of disease and ill health, which are disproportionately borne by the world’s poorest citizens. Despite that HMI is a relatively new phenomenon, recent figures indicate that approximately 40 million people worldwide have some form of HMI coverage, principally in India.

The emergence of HMI programmes worldwide provides hope that the poor will receive, at a minimum, a reliable, adequate level of access to affordable healthcare. Research shows that access to HMI reduces out-of-pocket health expenses, especially for catastrophic health events, and improves access to quality health care for those …

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

This study evaluated and compared the peak vertical ground reaction force (GRF) and rate of force development (RFD) for the eccentric and concentric phases of 4 lower body resistance training exercises, including the back squat, deadlift, step-up, and forward lunge. Sixteen women performed 2 repetitions of each of the 4 exercises at a 6 repetition maximum load. Kinetic data were acquired using a force platform. A repeated measures ANOVA was used to evaluate the differences in GRF between the exercises. Results revealed significant main effects for GRF both the eccentric (p ≤ 0.001) and concentric (p ≤ 0.001) …

The Acute Time Course Of Concurrent Activation Potentiation, Luke Garceau, Erich Petushek, Mckenzie Fauth, William Ebben

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

This study evaluated the acute time course of the ergogenic effect of concurrent activation potentiation (CAP). Forty-two men and women, including CAP non-responders and responders, performed a 5 second isometric knee extension on a dynamometer with the use of remote voluntary contractions (RVC). Mean torque was assessed in seven 500 millisecond (ms) time periods. A two-way repeated measures ANOVA revealed significant main effects for time period (p ≤ 0.001), but no significant interaction between time period and CAP non-responders and responders (p > 0.05). The ergogenic effects of CAP are accrued during the first 1000ms. Concurrent activation potentiation responders produce greater …

Basic Skills Testing In Math 2008, Susie M. Lanier, Sharon Taylor, Donna B. Saye Jan 2010

Basic Skills Testing In Math 2008, Susie M. Lanier, Sharon Taylor, Donna B. Saye

Proceedings of the Annual Meeting of the Georgia Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators

Math 2008 is an Area F course for early childhood majors in the University System of Georgia. The course covers basic skills that pre-service teachers will most likely be teaching in their career. At Georgia Southern University, many students in the course do not possess or have forgotten these basic skills. In Fall 2009, a basic skills test was implemented for Math 2008. Students must earn a score of 90 or higher on the test in order to pass the course. The test not only serves to let students know their areas of weakness, but also informs the instructor’s teaching. …

The Role Of Methyl Cpg Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In The Regulation Of Embryonic And Fetal Β-Type Globin Genes, Merlin Nithya Gnanapragasam Jan 2010

The Role Of Methyl Cpg Binding Domain Protein 2 (Mbd2) In The Regulation Of Embryonic And Fetal Β-Type Globin Genes, Merlin Nithya Gnanapragasam

Theses and Dissertations

The reexpression of the fetal γ-globin gene in adult erythrocytes is of therapeutic interest due to its ameliorating effects in β-hemoglobinopathies. We recently showed that Methyl CpG Binding Domain Protein2 (MBD2) contributes to the silencing of the chicken embryonic ρ-globin and human fetal γ-globin genes. We further biochemically characterized an erythroid MeCP1 complex that is recruited by MBD2 to mediate the silencing of these genes. These observations suggest that the disruption of the MeCP1 complex could augment the expression of the fetal/embryonic globin genes. In the studies presented in chapter 2, we have pursued a structural and biophysical analysis of …

Primary Care Of The Adult With Diabetes, Debra Gates Jan 2010

Primary Care Of The Adult With Diabetes, Debra Gates

Nursing Doctoral

The landmark diabetes studies of the 1990’s demonstrated to the world the importance of blood glucose control in diabetes mellitus. It is now with out question controlling blood sugar significantly reduces the development of or delays the onset of diabetes related complications. Since the time of these research findings, there has been a tremendous amount of effort to both develop and study strategies that were most effective in managing diabetes. Despite this, it has been said that diabetes care in the United States is suboptimal (Mc Laughlin, 2000, p.5). Many studies individually show promise. Collectively these studies may also form …

Tribal Civil Judicial Jurisdiction Over Nonmembers: A Practical Guide For Judges, Sarah Krakoff

Publications

This Article provides a summary of the law of tribal civil jurisdiction over persons who are not members of the governing tribe ("nonmembers'), followed by an analysis of trends in the lower courts. It was written to respond to a consensus view at the University of Colorado Law Review Symposium: "The Next Great Generation of American Indian Law Judges," in January 2010, that a concise, practical, yet in-depth treatment of this subject would be useful to the judiciary as well as practitioners. The Article traces the development of the Supreme Court's common law of tribal civil judicial jurisdiction from 1959 …

Telling Through Type: Typography And Narrative In Legal Briefs, Derek H. Kiernan-Johnson Jan 2010

Telling Through Type: Typography And Narrative In Legal Briefs, Derek H. Kiernan-Johnson

Publications

Most legal authors today self-publish, using basic word-processing software and letting the software’s default settings determine what their documents will look like when printed. As these settings are not optimized for legal texts, they do so at their peril. The default font Times New Roman, for example, as Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook warns, is "utterly inappropriate for long documents [such as] briefs."

Commentators have started urging a more deliberate approach to legal typography. Their suggestions, however, have been content-neutral, intended for all legal texts and focused on goals such as legibility and readability.

Typography, however, has much greater potential. The …

Tort Damages And The New Science Of Happiness, Rick Swedloff, Peter H. Huang Jan 2010

Tort Damages And The New Science Of Happiness, Rick Swedloff, Peter H. Huang

Publications

The happiness revolution is coming to legal scholarship. Based on empirical data about the how and why of positive emotions, legal scholars are beginning to suggest reforms to legal institutions. In this article we aim to redirect and slow down this revolution.

One of their first targets of these legal hedonists is the jury system for tort damages. In several recent articles, scholars have concluded that early findings about hedonic adaptation and affective forecasting undermine tort awards for pain and suffering, mental anguish, loss of enjoyment of life, and other non-economic damages. In the shadow of a broader debate about …
