A Study Of Recent Classification Algorithms And A Novel Approach For Biosignal Data Classification, Eyup Cinar
A Study Of Recent Classification Algorithms And A Novel Approach For Biosignal Data Classification, Eyup Cinar
Theses
Analyzing and understanding human biosignals have been important research areas that have many practical applications in everyday life. For example, Brain Computer Interface is a research area that studies the connection between the human brain and external systems by processing and learning the brain signals called Electroencephalography (EEG) signals. Similarly, various assistive robotics applications are being developed to interpret eye or muscle signals in humans in order to provide control inputs for external devices. The efficiency for all of these applications depends heavily on being able to process and classify human biosignals. Therefore many techniques from Signal Processing and Machine …
Development Of A Platform For Simulating And Optimizing Thermoelectric Energy Systems, John Kreuder
Development Of A Platform For Simulating And Optimizing Thermoelectric Energy Systems, John Kreuder
Theses
Thermoelectrics are solid state devices that can convert thermal energy directly into electrical energy. They have historically been used only in niche applications because of their relatively low efficiencies. With the advent of nanotechnology and improved manufacturing processes thermoelectric materials have become less costly and more efficient As next generation thermoelectric materials become available there is a need for industries to quickly and cost effectively seek out feasible applications for thermoelectric heat recovery platforms. Determining the technical and economic feasibility of such systems requires a model that predicts performance at the system level. Current models focus on specific system applications …

The Relationships Between Obesity, Obstructive Sleep Apnea And Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Performance, Jennifer Ann O'Neil
Theses
Obesity and Obstructive Sleep Apnea will impair Commercial Motor Vehicle operator performance. Obesity will increase the risk of developing serious medical conditions that may cause harm to human health and wellbeing. One condition that can be associated with obesity is known as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Various symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea will impair a commercial motor vehicle operator's ability to safely maneuver a vehicle. Many commercial motor vehicle collisions have been caused by operator fatigue and have resulted in serious injury and death. Due to unhealthy lifestyles, commercial motor vehicle operators are at a high risk of being obese. Obesity …
Auto-Generation Of Use Case Controllers, Pushkar Marathe
Auto-Generation Of Use Case Controllers, Pushkar Marathe
Master's Projects
The thesis is based on the concept of generating machine executable code from UML diagrams. There has been some research done on the same topic but it is mainly focused on class diagrams. My main focus will be on the use case diagrams, and sequence diagrams. Sequence diagrams give us the details of any process in a step-by-step fashion which makes it easier to extract the required information regarding the use cases and the controllers which help us generate the code. The process follows three steps, first being generation of UML diagrams. Secondly, these are converted into XMI (XML Metadata …

Field‐Derived Henry's Law Constants For Polychlorinated Biphenyls In Oceanic Waters, Rosalinda Gioia, Kevin C. Jones, Rainer Lohmann, Luca Nizzetto, Jordi Dachs
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Accurate knowledge of Henry's law constants (Kaw) is very important for fate and transport studies of organic chemicals. Here field‐derived Kaw values for polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners (PCBs 28, 49, 52, 118, 138, 149, and 153) were determined in the open Atlantic Ocean, at locations where air and seawater were assumed to be at equilibrium. Field‐based Kaw values were derived from air and seawater samples simultaneously collected at these locations, and their relationship with temperature was determined. The average field‐derived Kaw for PCBs 28, 49, 52, 118, and 138 was generally 2–3 times higher …

Coastal New England Pilot Study To Determine Fossil And Biogenic Formaldehyde Source Contributions Using Radiocarbon, Haiwei Shen, Brian G. Heikes, John T. Merrill, Ann P. Mcnichol, Li Xu
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Compound specific radiocarbon analyses of atmospheric formaldehyde are reported as fraction modern (Fm) for a limited number of winter and summer air samples collected in coastal southern New England in 2007. The 11 of 13 samples with Fm < 0.2 were collected under the influence of the semipermanent Bermuda high‐pressure system with transport from the Washington, D. C., to New York City urban corridor. The two samples with Fm > 0.2 (max ∼ 0.35) were collected on days with strong northwesterly flow and the least urban impact. The Fm data were combined with VOC observations from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management, estimates of oxygenated VOC (OVOC), and back trajectories to interpret the relative contributions of biogenic and fossil carbon sources. It is argued that CH2O sources were dominated …
Short- And Medium-Range Prediction Of Tropical And Transitioning Cyclone Tracks Within The Ncep Global Ensemble Forecasting System, Christian E. Buckingham, Timothy Marchok, Isaac Ginis, Lewis M. Rothstein, Dail Rowe
Short- And Medium-Range Prediction Of Tropical And Transitioning Cyclone Tracks Within The Ncep Global Ensemble Forecasting System, Christian E. Buckingham, Timothy Marchok, Isaac Ginis, Lewis M. Rothstein, Dail Rowe
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The NCEP Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS) is examined in its ability to predict tropical cyclone and extratropical transition (ET) positions. Forecast and observed tracks are compared in Atlantic and western North Pacific basins for 2006–08, and the accuracy and consistency of the ensemble are examined out to 8 days. Accuracy is quantified by the average absolute and along- and cross-track errors of the ensemble mean. Consistency is evaluated through the use of dispersion diagrams, missing rate error, and probability within spread. Homogeneous comparisons are made with the NCEP Global Forecasting System (GFS). The average absolute track error of the …
Unsplit Complex Frequency-Shifted Pml Implementation Using Auxiliary Differential Equations For Seismic Wave Modeling, Wei Zhang, Yang Shen
Unsplit Complex Frequency-Shifted Pml Implementation Using Auxiliary Differential Equations For Seismic Wave Modeling, Wei Zhang, Yang Shen
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The complex-frequency-shifted perfectly matched layer (CFS-PML) technique can efficiently absorb near-grazing incident waves. In seismic wave modeling, CFS-PML has been implemented by the first-order-accuracy convolutional PML technique or second-order-accuracy recursive convolution PML technique. Both use different algorithms than the numerical scheme for the interior domain to update auxiliary memory variables in the PML and thus cannot be used directly with higher-order time-marching schemes. We work with an unsplit-field CFS-PML implementation using auxiliary differential equations (ADEs) to update the auxiliary memory variables. This ADE CFS-PML results in complete first-order differential equations. Thus, the numerical scheme for the interior domain can be …

Transformation Of An Agulhas Eddy Near The Continental Slope, S. Baker-Yeboah, G. R. Flieri, Georgi G. Sutyrin, Y. Zhang
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The transformation of Agulhas eddies near the continental slope of southern Africa and their subsequent self-propagation are analyzed in both observational data and numerical simulations. Self-propagation results from a net dipole moment of a generalized heton structure consisting of a surface-intensified anticyclonic eddy and deep cyclonic pattern. Such Agulhas vortical structures can form near the retroflection region and further north along the western coast of southern Africa. We analyze nonlinear topographic wave generation, vortex deformations, and filament production as an important part in water mass exchange. Self-propagating structures provide a conduit for exchange between the deep ocean and shelf regions …
Momentum Flux Budget Across The Air–Sea Interface Under Uniform And Tropical Cyclone Winds, Yalin Fan, Isaac Ginis, Tetsu Hara
Momentum Flux Budget Across The Air–Sea Interface Under Uniform And Tropical Cyclone Winds, Yalin Fan, Isaac Ginis, Tetsu Hara
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
In coupled ocean–atmosphere models, it is usually assumed that the momentum flux into ocean currents is equal to the flux from air (wind stress). However, when the surface wave field grows (decays) in space or time, it gains (loses) momentum and reduces (increases) the momentum flux into subsurface currents compared to the flux from the wind. In particular, under tropical cyclone (TC) conditions the surface wave field is complex and fast varying in space and time and may significantly affect the momentum flux from wind into ocean. In this paper, numerical experiments are performed to investigate the momentum flux budget …

Modeling The Impact Of Declining Sea Ice On The Arctic Marine Planktonic Ecosystem, Jinlun Zhang, Yvette H. Spitz, Michael Steele, Carin Ashjian, Robert Campbell, Léo Berline, Patricia Matrai
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
We have developed a coupled 3‐D pan‐Arctic biology/sea ice/ocean model to investigate the impact of declining Arctic sea ice on the marine planktonic ecosystem over 1988–2007. The biophysical model results agree with satellite observations of a generally downward trend in summer sea ice extent during 1988–2007, resulting in an increase in the simulated photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) at the ocean surface and marine primary productivity (PP) in the upper 100 m over open water areas of the Arctic Ocean. The simulated Arctic sea ice thickness has decreased steadily during 1988–2007, leading to an increase in PAR and PP in sea …

Increase In Water Column Denitrification During The Last Deglaciation: The Influence Of Oxygen Demand In The Eastern Equatorial Pacific, P. Martinez, Rebecca S. Robinson
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
Here we present organic export production and nitrogen isotope results spanning the last 30 000 years from a core recovered off Costa Rica (Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 1242) on the leading edge of the oxygen minimum zone of the Eastern Tropical North Pacific. Marine export production reveals glacial-interglacial variations with low organic matter (total organic carbon and total nitrogen) contents during warm intervals, twice more during cold episodes and double peaked maximum during the deglaciation, between ~15.5–18.5 and 11–13 ka B.P. When this new export production record is compared with four nearby cores from within the Eastern Pacific along …

Mapping Circulation In The Kuroshio Extension With An Array Of Current And Pressure Recording Inverted Echo Sounders, Kathleen A. Donohue, D. Randolph Watts, Karen L. Tracey, Andrew D. Greene, Maureen A. Kennelly
Graduate School of Oceanography Faculty Publications
The Kuroshio Extension System Study (KESS) aimed to quantify processes governing the variability of and the interaction between the Kuroshio Extension and the recirculation gyre. To meet this goal, a suite of instrumentation, including 43 inverted echo sounders equipped with bottom pressure gauges and current meters [current and pressure recording inverted echo sounders (CPIES)], was deployed. The array was centered on the first quasi-stationary meander crest and trough east of Japan, which is also the region of highest eddy kinetic energy. KESS was the first experiment to deploy a large quantity of these new CPIES instruments, and it was unique …
Open Source Analysis Of Biomedical Figures, David Shao
Open Source Analysis Of Biomedical Figures, David Shao
Master's Projects
With a selection of biomedical literature available for open access, a natural pairing seems to be the use of open source software to automatically analyze content, in particular, the content of gures. Considering the large number of possible tools and approaches, we choose to focus on the recognition of printed characters. As the problem of optical character recognition (OCR) under rea- sonable conditions is considered to be solved, and as open source software is fully capable of isolating the location of characters and identifying most of them accurately, we instead use OCR as an application area for the relatively recent …

For an instructor, it has always been a challenging task to keep students engaged during the lecture and assess them in real time. Instructors use different methodologies to address the challenge of keeping students engaged during the class and increase their participation. Widely used methodologies for active learning include clickers and Tablet PCs. Clickers are small handheld devices which are used to collect student responses and present these responses graphically. Tablet PCs provide a functionality to use natural handwriting to provide feedback. Web browsers are a cost effective approaches. I have used a web based technology to create active learning …
Clustering And Validation Of Microarray Data Using Consensus Clustering, Sarbinder Kallar
Clustering And Validation Of Microarray Data Using Consensus Clustering, Sarbinder Kallar
Master's Projects
Clustering is a popular method to glean useful information from microarray data. Unfortunately the results obtained from the common clustering algorithms are not consistent and even with multiple runs of different algorithms a further validation step is required. Due to absence of well defined class labels, and unknown number of clusters, the unsupervised learning problem of finding optimal clustering is hard. Obtaining a consensus of judiciously obtained clusterings not only provides stable results but also lends a high level of confidence in the quality of results. Several base algorithm runs are used to generate clusterings and a co-association matrix of …
Parallel Programming Recipes, Thuy C. Nguyenphuc
Parallel Programming Recipes, Thuy C. Nguyenphuc
Master's Projects
Parallel programming has become vital for the success of commercial applications since Moore’s Law will now be used to double the processors (or cores) per chip every technology generation. The performance of applications depends on how software executions can be mapped on the multi-core chip, and how efficiently they run the cores. Currently, the increase of parallelism in software development is necessary, not only for taking advantage of multi-core capability, but also for adapting and surviving in the new silicon implementation. This project will provide the performance characteristics of parallelism for some common algorithms or computations using different parallel languages. …
Geometrical Structure And Analysis Of Association Rule, Rajat Sar
Geometrical Structure And Analysis Of Association Rule, Rajat Sar
Master's Projects
Association rule mining helps us to identify the association between items from a large transactional data set. It has always been a time consuming process because of repeatedly scanning of the data set. Apriori Algorithm [1] and FP-Tree Algorithm [2] are the two methods to find out the association of items in a large transactional item set. Both the above algorithm works differently (Apriori follows Bottom-Up Approach & FP-Tree follows Top-Down Approach) in order to get the association. Associations of items generated from the above two algorithms can be represented in geometry. The geometrical form of associations is called Simplical …

The article explores the last 10 years of literature relating to Davidoff and Florance’s informationist concept. An informationist provides many of the same services as a medical librarian, is a permanent member of the clinical team, and resides on the clinical floors. The author explores the job functions of the informationist and examines whether this service has come to fruition. The author argues that the informationist service can only be fully realized in large academic health sciences libraries, large teaching hospitals, and medical research organizations such as the National Institutes of Health. To facilitate this argument, a questionnaire was distributed …

Microbial Community Characterization And Pathogen Analysis Within Constructed Wetlands Of Varying Scale Designed For Contaminant Removal, Michael R. Mitzel
Microbial Community Characterization And Pathogen Analysis Within Constructed Wetlands Of Varying Scale Designed For Contaminant Removal, Michael R. Mitzel
Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)
Constructed wetlands (CWs) are complex treatment environments, requiring an integrative research approach to improve our understanding of them. The goal of this thesis was to establish an understanding of the functional and structural characteristics of microbial communities within bench-, field- and industrial-scale environmental treatment systems. The impact of pathogenic and/or antibiotic contaminants on these communities based on their functional and structural profiles using community-level physiological profiling (CLPP) and denaturing-gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE), respectively, was investigated. Under normal operation, bench-, field- and industrial-scale treatment systems were able to produce similarly behaving structural and functional profiles. Increased retention time was consistently associated …
