Replication of plus-strand RNA viruses depends on host factors that are recruited into viral replicase complexes. Previous studies showed that eukaryotic translation elongation factor (eEF1A) is one of the resident host proteins in the highly purified tombusvirus replicase complex. Using a random library of eEF1A mutants, we identified one mutant that decreased and three mutants that increased Tomato bushy stunt virus (TBSV) replication in a yeast model host. Additional in vitro assays with whole cell extracts prepared from yeast strains expressing the eEF1A mutants demonstrated several functions for eEF1A in TBSV replication: facilitating the recruitment of the viral RNA template …

Wilson V. Northwestern Mut. Ins. Co., 625 F. 3d 54 - Court Of Appeals, 2nd Circuit 2010, Roger J. Miner '56
Circuit Court Opinions
Plaintiff-appellant Michelle Wilson ("Wilson") appeals from a summary judgment entered on March 31, 2009, in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York (Young, J., sitting by designation), in favor of defendant-appellee Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company ("Northwestern") on Wilson's claim that she is the beneficiary of two life insurance policies issued to her late husband, Kenneth Wilson ("Kenneth"), by Northwestern. The District Court determined that there were no genuine issues of material fact as to Kenneth's termination of one life insurance policy, the "Whole Life Policy," on February 28, 2005, and failure to pay any …

Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Seeing Double: A Diplopic Aesthetic In Experience And Performance, Samuel S. Sloan
Research Papers
This investigation uses an autoethnographic approach to investigate the author's personal, phenomenological experience of diplopia, double vision, in order to apply the lived condition to an aesthetic form in performance. Using Kuppers's notion of a “crip aesthetic,” this piece re-functions a potential aspect of disability, the condition of diplopia, as a way of opening up discourses of multiplicity in art and performance. The author also calls for others to integrate non-normative body states into their art praxis.
Kinematic Changes Of The Tennis Forehand Ground Stroke As Post Contact Ball Speed Increases, Merrill D. Funk
Kinematic Changes Of The Tennis Forehand Ground Stroke As Post Contact Ball Speed Increases, Merrill D. Funk
Theses and Dissertations
Neuromuscular and kinematic patterns during the tennis forehand have been studied extensively. However, no one has evaluated potential upper-extremity kinematic changes during the forehand as ball speed increases. The purpose of this study was to evaluate changes in shoulder and trunk kinematics as forehand ball speed increased, in an attempt to better understand how kinematics may promote forehand ball speed. Peak trunk rotation angle, shoulder horizontal abduction/adduction and internal/external rotation angle, and corresponding angular velocities were measured between initial backswing and ball contact during forehands that were performed at three different speeds (50%, 75%, and 100% of maximal post-impact ball …

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton
Last Friday, October 29th, the River Steward 2013 cohort made a visit to the Dayton Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP)... or more accurately called: the Water Reclamation Plant. The tour gave us an idea of what the necessary steps are for purifying the water that will be returned to the Great Miami River.

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton
Week 8 focused on power structures in a city, characteristics of each structure and when they are most effective. Janet Bednarek used the first half of the class to review the reading Power in the City and break down the different structures. Dick Ferguson then spent the remainder of the time applying the structures and roles to a current issue in Dayton: low-dam removal. This time was also used to discuss the Fitz Center’s model for community building and leadership.

Exploring Participant Perspectives On The Relationship Between Social Change Theater And Social Change Movements : A Project Based Upon An Investigation At The San Francisco Mime Troupe, Sins Invalid And The Outlook Community Theatre Project, San Francisco, California, Jesse Ehrensaft-Hawley
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This qualitative, exploratory study was designed to examine social change theater program participants' perspectives on the connection between their participation and their perceived capacity to create systemic social change. The research pursued the following questions: 1) How has participation in social change theatre affected the participants' sense of agency to create collective social change at the macro level; 2) What do participants perceive as their impact on systemic social change in relation to their participation in social change theater? 3) How do participants perceive the interaction of change at the level of the macro with change they may have experienced …

An Exploratory Study Of The Life Experiences Of Gay, Lesbian And Bisexual People Who Were Raised In The U.S.A. Mennonite Church : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Adele Kathleen Liechty
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study is to explore the life experiences of persons who were raised in the U.S.A Mennonite Church and came to identify as Gay, Lesbian, or Bisexual. The research was a qualitative study with a sample of 10 self-identified GLB people, who were raised in the Mennonite Church. Through face-to-face interviews, participants were asked to reflect on their life experiences as it pertained to being raised Mennonite and identifying as GLB. They were asked specifically to think about the intersections of their Mennonite identity with their GLB identity development. The findings of this study highlight the complex …

Contemplative Practice, Internal Family Systems And Affect Regulation : An Exploratory Study : A Project Based Upon An Independent Investigation, Jessica Jeanne Prodis
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
This exploratory study was undertaken to investigate the ways that contemplative practices across varied traditions may aid practitioners in the development of tools for emotional containment and regulation. The Internal Family Systems (IFS) model of psychotherapy (Schwartz, 1995) was used as a theoretical framework for this study. Findings were compared to the ways that affect regulation and containment are conceptualized within the IFS model. Eleven subjects who identified as utilizing contemplative practices from various traditions participated in this study. Interview questions were designed to explore the ways that engagement in a daily contemplative practice for five or more years had …

The Mycobacterium Tuberculosis Drugome And Its Polypharmacological Implications, Sarah L. Kinnings, Li Xie, Kingston H. Fung, Richard M. Jackson, Lei Xie, Phillip E. Bourne
Publications and Research
We report a computational approach that integrates structural bioinformatics, molecular modelling and systems biology to construct a drug-target network on a structural proteome-wide scale. The approach has been applied to the genome of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M.tb), the causative agent of one of today’s most widely spread infectious diseases. The resulting drug-target interaction network for all structurally characterized approved drugs bound to putative M.tb receptors, we refer to as the ‘TB-drugome’. The TB-drugome reveals that approximately one-third of the drugs examined have the potential to be repositioned to treat tuberculosis and that many currently unexploited M.tb receptors may be chemically druggable …
