The purpose ofthis study was originally to support the voices of African American adolescents and the emergence of their stories through the use of mentors hip, dance/movement therapy, and the production of an artistic performance. But what I truly found was that through parallel processing this study turned into an artistic inquiry that helped me uncover more insight about my own story: a story ofloss, isolation, rejection, recovery, independence, support and acceptance, and confidence.

Predicting Treatment Efficacy Via Quantitative Mri: A Bayesian Joint Model, Jincao Wu, Tim Johnson

The prognosis for patients with high-grade gliomas is poor, with a median survival of one year. Treatment efficacy assessment is typically unavailable until 5{6 months post diagnosis. Investigators hypothesize that quantitative MRI (qMRI) can assess treatment efficacy three weeks after therapy starts, thereby allowing salvage treatments to begin earlier. The purpose of this work is to build a predictive model of treatment efficacy using qMRI data and to assess its performance. The outcome is one-year survival status. We propose a joint, two-stage Bayesian model. In stage I, we smooth the image data with a multivariate spatio-temporal pairwise dierence prior. We …

Calvin College dorms have a chronic issue with wasting energy. The dorms have little insulation, high infiltration rates, and are heated by low efficiency boilers. These existing characteristics combine for a larger required heating load and increased energy usage. The excess heat, due to poor temperature control, is often vented out through the windows whenever students deem necessary. This project will attempt to reduce wasted energy and efficiently distribute heat as needed.

The Thermal Systems Design class of 2010 was challenged with retrofitting the Bolt-Heyns-Timmer (BHT) dorm to decrease energy consumption and improve efficiency. The class was presented with the …

It has been predicted that if you were born in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a one in two chanceof either living in a blended family as a child or as an adult (Coleman, Ganong, & Fine, 2000).In 1989, Glick predicted that in the 21st century, blended families would be the leading family form. Today in 2010, they are far from being a new phenomenon (Stewart, 2008). "Education reform and the passage of No Child Left Behind legislation are responsible for many innovative educational programs. The purpose of this study was to determine whether grouping ninth graders who share core teachers, known as freshman teams, affects students' academic success in high school. The study population consisted of 301 incoming freshmen at West Valley High School in Fairbanks, AK during the 2009-2010 school year. Student grades in both English and science were examined. Results of a school-sponsored, Likert-style survey were used to supplement the conclusions. A t-Test for Independent Groups was used to determine whether freshman teams affect …

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a slowly progressing neurodegenerative disease that leads to dementia. Histopathological hallmarks that characterize AD are senile plaques formed by extracellular deposition of Amyloid beta (Aβ) peptide and intracellular aggregates of hyperphosphorylated tau protein. The plaques, which are found in the brain parenchyma, comprise both 40 and 42 residue Aβ. Aggregation of Aβ is an established pathogenic mechanism in AD, but little is known about the initiation of this process in vivo. Several studies have revealed significant inflammatory markers such as activated microglia and cytokines surrounding the plaques. Plaques are a hallmark of AD, but they are …

Multiple fans are sometimes used in an array configuration to cool various types of electronic equipment. In addition to adding another noise source, using two fans with closely spaced blade passage frequencies (BPF) can create an annoying beat frequency. A two fan array with each fan having a different BPF was considered. The fans were theoretically modeled at the BPF and first harmonics. Each fan has two acoustic paths to the far field.
