In Vitro Gene Regulatory Networks Predict In Vivo Function Of Liver, Youping Deng, David R. Johnson, Junmei Ai, Edward J. Perkins, Sharon A. Meyer

Background: Evolution of toxicity testing is predicated upon using in vitro cell based systems to rapidly screen and predict how a chemical might cause toxicity to an organ in vivo. However, the degree to which we can extend in vitro results to in vivo activity and possible mechanisms of action remains to be fully addressed.

Results: Here we use the nitroaromatic 2,4,6-trinitrotoluene (TNT) as a model chemical to compare and determine how we might extrapolate from in vitro data to in vivo effects. We found 341 transcripts differentially expressed in common among in vitro and in vivo assays …

ETSU Faculty Works

C-reactive protein (CRP) is a phylogenetically conserved protein; in humans, it is present in the plasma and at sites of inflammation. At physiological pH, native pentameric CRP exhibits calcium-dependent binding specificity for phosphocholine. In this study, we determined the binding specificities of CRP at acidic pH, a characteristic of inflammatory sites. We investigated the binding of fluid-phase CRP to six immobilized proteins: complement factor H, oxidized low-density lipoprotein, complement C3b, IgG, amyloid β, and BSA immobilized on microtiter plates. At pH 7.0, CRP did not bind to any of these proteins, but, at pH ranging from 5.2 to 4.6, CRP …

High Tech Vanity: Efficient Design With The Help Of Technology, Cassandra Krul Nov 2010

High Tech Vanity: Efficient Design With The Help Of Technology, Cassandra Krul

Theses

On a daily basis, humans execute multiple tasks. With technology becoming more prevalent in our everyday lives, we find it creeping into these rituals. This makes it easier to accomplish many tasks at once. The root of the success of technology is its ability to allow us to communicate in ways beyond a simple conversation. That is to say, means of communication are constantly being reinvented and developed.

With these developments, people are finding creative ways of implementing technology into everyday tasks For example, many of us start our day by waking up and taking a shower. Following that shower, …

Dewey's Pragmatism And The Great Community, Philip Schuyler Bishop Nov 2010

Dewey's Pragmatism And The Great Community, Philip Schuyler Bishop

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In investigating Dewey’s theory of the Great community, it is important to first examine closely Dewey’s theory of scientific inquiry and show how it evades the spectator theory of knowledge common to all modern epistemologies as closed systems. Dewey maintained that through controlled experimentalism we engage, and can solve, existential issues facing us for the purpose of expanding human freedom, promoting the democratic way of life and cultivating the institutions which foster these activities. The usage of inquiry to overcome problematic situations therefore stands as one of the first conditions needed to attain the great community.

Since Dewey did not …

New Peptide-Pair Screening Strategy And Peptidylglycine A-Hydroxylating Monooxygenase (Phm) Based Enrichment Method For The Discovery Of Novel A-Amidated Peptides, Zhenming An Nov 2010

New Peptide-Pair Screening Strategy And Peptidylglycine A-Hydroxylating Monooxygenase (Phm) Based Enrichment Method For The Discovery Of Novel A-Amidated Peptides, Zhenming An

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Peptide a-amidation is known as a signature of bioactivity due to the fact that half of the bioactive peptides found in the nervous and endocrine systems are a-amidated and that most known a-amidated peptides are bioactive. a-Amidated peptides are produced by the oxidative cleavage of glycine-extended precursors. Peptidylglycine a-amidating monooxygenase (PAM) is the only known enzyme responsible for catalyzing this reaction and its sole physiological function is to convert glycine extended prohormones to their a-amidated forms. High levels of PAM are found in certain tissues with no corresponding level of amidated products suggesting the presence of undiscovered a-amidated peptide hormones. …

Educators’ Beliefs About And Approaches To The Evaluation Of Student Writing, Vanessa Minick Nov 2010

Educators’ Beliefs About And Approaches To The Evaluation Of Student Writing, Vanessa Minick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The overarching purpose of this study was to describe educators’ beliefs about the evaluation of student writing. The inquiry was guided by the following research questions: (a) what are the differences in the ways in which educators approach evaluating student writing? (b) how do educators evaluate the effectiveness of their evaluation methods for judging the quality of students’ writing samples? and (c) what factors impact the evaluation decisions of educators? The following variables were considered: public and private school settings, evaluation methods, and educators’ beliefs about evaluating writing. In order to gain perspective of the current status of the methods …

Gender And The Social Structure Of Collaboration, Kjersten Bunker Whittington Nov 2010

Gender And The Social Structure Of Collaboration, Kjersten Bunker Whittington

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Previous research demonstrates that individuals’ network positions in their surrounding social structure of relations influence the extent of their output and performance. The unique situation of minority groups complicates the relationship, however, as issues of status, legitimacy, and marginality influence the flow and interpretation of information and resources. While several scholars have addressed differences in male and female networks in the workplace, the association between macro-level work arrangements and the micro-level interaction mechanisms of minority groups is unclear. Greater insight into stratification processes can be gained by studying how organizational forms affect the way men’s and women’s networks are structured …

John Mccone And The Cuban Missile Crisis, Christopher M. Heist Nov 2010

John Mccone And The Cuban Missile Crisis, Christopher M. Heist

Masters Theses

My thesis focused on John McCone and his role during the Cuban Missile Crisis. On this subject, I will examine John McCone's efforts from May to September 1962 to understand the Soviet buildup in Cuba, pushing President John F. Kennedy for more reconnaissance of the island to aid this effort. During the crisis in October 1962, McCone was one of the main officials responsible for briefing the Kennedy administration on the Soviet efforts in Cuba, where he sided with the members of the cabinet pushing for an air strike and invasion to remove the missiles. Following the crisis, McCone continued …
