Physiological Recordings Of High And Low Output Nmjs On The Crayfish Leg Extensor Muscle, Wenhui Wu, Robin L. Cooper
Physiological Recordings Of High And Low Output Nmjs On The Crayfish Leg Extensor Muscle, Wenhui Wu, Robin L. Cooper
Biology Faculty Publications
We explain in detail how to expose and conduct electrophysiological recordings of synaptic responses for high (phasic) and low (tonic) output motor neurons innervating the extensor muscle in the walking leg of a crayfish. Distinct differences are present in the physiology and morphology of the phasic and tonic nerve terminals. The tonic axon contains many more mitochondria, enabling it to take a vital stain more intensely than the phasic axon. The tonic terminals have varicosities, and the phasic terminal is filiform. The tonic terminals are low in synaptic efficacy but show dramatic facilitated responses. In contrast, the phasic terminals are …

The bread-making quality of wheat is strongly influenced by multiple low molecular weight glutenin subunit (LMW-GS) proteins expressed in the seeds. However, the organization, recombination and expression of LMW-GS genes and their functional mechanism in bread-making are not well understood. Here we report a systematic molecular analysis of LMW-GS genes located at the orthologous Glu-3 loci (Glu-A3, B3 and D3) of bread wheat using complementary approaches (genome wide characterization of gene members, expression profiling, proteomic analysis). Fourteen unique LMW-GS genes were identified for Xiaoyan 54 (with superior bread-making quality). Molecular mapping and recombination analyses revealed that the three Glu-3 loci …

Ba Ni Al O (y = 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0) catalysts were tested for the partial oxidation of CH at temperatures between 200 and 900 °C. Temperature programmed reaction results indicate that light-off for the partial oxidation reaction occurred between 665 and 687 °C for all catalysts. Isothermal runs performed at 900 °C on the catalysts showed stable reaction product concentrations, consistent with equilibrium. Post-reaction analysis of the used catalysts showed that there are two distinct zones in the catalyst bed. In a short leading edge of the bed, the apparently complete consumption of oxygen leads to a …

A glance at local and national media might lead one to believe there’s little good news about secondary schools and the literacy skills of their students: Low test scores. Few students reading for pleasure. Their inability to think incisively or write coherently.
Here in the metropolitan Omaha area, however, there is a major effort under way to support the reading and writing skills for high school and middle school students.
For the past year, an organization called METLink — a partnership of UNO’s College of Education and College of Arts and Sciences with area middle and high schools — has …

Interactional Entanglements: A Frame Analysis Of Negotiated Identities In Ethnographic Research On The Language Classroom, Mark A. Ouellette
Interactional Entanglements: A Frame Analysis Of Negotiated Identities In Ethnographic Research On The Language Classroom, Mark A. Ouellette
UTA Working Papers in Linguistics - Archive
This study examines interactional entanglements that occurred during ethnographer-participant interactions in a language classroom. It draws upon Goffman's notion of framing to analyze how research participants use deixis to position the ethnographer vis-à-vis themselves within classroom speech events. The analysis shows that the teacher and students negotiated identities by appealing to the researcher's allegiances within an underlying judicial trial frame. As a marginal native, the ethnographer is particularly susceptible to others' social positioning, which raises questions concerning the very personal involvement of the ethnographer conducting research in an educational setting. This article underscores the argument that impression management is not …
