Status-Seeking In Hedonic Games With Heterogeneous Players, Emiliya Lazarova, Dinko Dimitrov Nov 2010

Status-Seeking In Hedonic Games With Heterogeneous Players, Emiliya Lazarova, Dinko Dimitrov

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We study hedonic games with heterogeneous player types that reflect her nationality, ethnic background, or skill type. Agents' preferences are dictated by status-seeking where status can be either local or global. The two dimensions of status define the two components of a generalized constant elasticity of substitution utility function. In this setting, we characterize the core as a function of the utility's parameter values and show that in all cases the corresponding cores are non-empty. We further discuss the core stable outcomes in terms of their segregating versus integrating properties.

Examining Preschoolers' Trajectories Of Individual Learning Behaviors: The Influence Of Approaches To Learning On School Readiness, Michelle Filomena Maier Nov 2010

Examining Preschoolers' Trajectories Of Individual Learning Behaviors: The Influence Of Approaches To Learning On School Readiness, Michelle Filomena Maier

Open Access Dissertations

This study integrated variable- and child-centered techniques to investigate trajectories of four learning behaviors (initiative, persistence, planning, and problem-solving flexibility) and their influence on Head Start preschoolers' academic school readiness. Variable-centered findings revealed differential, quadratic growth trajectories for each of the four learning behaviors. However, where children began the year (intercept), how much they changed across the year (slope), and how much their rate of change changed across the year (quadratic) differed depending on the learning behavior. Initiative and problem-solving flexibility emerged as significant predictors of end-of-year academic school readiness skills, controlling for persistence and planning. There was no evidence …

Applying Ecodevelopmental Theory And The Theory Of Reasoned Action To Understand Hiv Risk Behaviors Among Hispanic Adolescents, Johis Ortega Nov 2010

Applying Ecodevelopmental Theory And The Theory Of Reasoned Action To Understand Hiv Risk Behaviors Among Hispanic Adolescents, Johis Ortega

Open Access Dissertations

The number of adolescents in the U.S. who engage in risk behaviors such as alcohol and drug use and unsafe sexual practices has reached alarming levels, with Hispanic adolescents in particular reporting high rates of substance use and sexual activity. This study explored risk and protective factors that influence high-risk behaviors in Hispanic adolescents. A theoretical model was developed based on an integration of Ecodevelopmental Theory and the Theory of Reasoned Action to investigate individual and social factors that affect the risk behaviors of Hispanic adolescents. This study was a cross-sectional, descriptive, secondary investigation of the baseline data of a …

Biometric Recognition Systems Employing Novel Shape-Based Features, Jindan Zhou Nov 2010

Biometric Recognition Systems Employing Novel Shape-Based Features, Jindan Zhou

Open Access Dissertations

With the increased security requirements in a variety of applications and advances in sensor technology, emerging biometric technologies, including using some lesser known biometrics, have become important research topics. This is due to the potential benefits they may provide as independent biometric markers or as compliments to existing biometric systems. In this work, our aim is to explore new biometric technologies for person identification. We consider three different biometrics, namely, Three Dimensional (3D) and Two Dimensional (2D) ear biometrics, 3D face recognition, and human identification based on dental X-Ray images. For the ear biometrics component, we propose a novel 3D …

Marketing Via Friends: Strategic Diffusion Of Information In Social Networks With Homophily, Roman Chuhay Nov 2010

Marketing Via Friends: Strategic Diffusion Of Information In Social Networks With Homophily, Roman Chuhay

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper studies the impact of homophily on the optimal strategies of a monopolist, whose marketing campaign of new product relies on a word of mouth communication. Homophily is a tendency of people to interact more with those who are similar to them. In the model there are two types of consumers embedded into a social network, which differ in friendship preferences and desirable design of product. Consumers can learn about the product directly from an advertisement or from their neighbors. The monopolist chooses the product design and price to influence a pattern of communication among consumers. We find a …

The Repeated Prisoner’S Dilemma In A Network, Markus Kinateder Nov 2010

The Repeated Prisoner’S Dilemma In A Network, Markus Kinateder

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Imperfect private monitoring in an infinitely repeated discounted Prisoner’s Dilemma played on a communication network is studied. Players observe their direct neighbors’ behavior only, but communicate strategically the repeated game’s history throughout the network. The delay in receiving this information requires the players to be more patient to sustain the same level of cooperation as in a complete network, although a Folk Theorem obtains when the players are patient enough. All equilibria under exogenously imposed truth-telling extend to strategic communication, and additional ones arise due to richer communication. There are equilibria in which a player lies. The flow of information …

Harmful Signaling In Matching Markets, Alexey Kushnir Nov 2010

Harmful Signaling In Matching Markets, Alexey Kushnir

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Some labor markets have recently developed formal signalling mechanisms, e.g. the signalling for interviews in the job market for new Ph.D. economists. We evaluate the effect of such mechanisms on two-sided matching markets by considering a game of incomplete information between firms and workers. Workers have almost aligned preferences over firms: each worker has “typical” commonly known preferences with probability close to one and “atypical” idiosyncratic preferences with the complementary probability close to zero. Firms have some commonly known preferences over workers. We show that the introduction of a signalling mechanism is harmful for this environment. Though signals transmit previously …

The Paradox Of New Members In The Eu Council Of Ministers: A Non-Cooperative Bargaining Analysis, Maria Montero Nov 2010

The Paradox Of New Members In The Eu Council Of Ministers: A Non-Cooperative Bargaining Analysis, Maria Montero

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Power indices suggest that adding new members to a voting body may increase the power of an existing member, even if the number of votes of all existing members and the decision rule remain constant. This phenomenon is known as the paradox of new members. This paper uses the leading model of majoritarian bargaining and shows that the paradox is predicted in equilibrium for past EU enlargements. Furthermore, a majority of members would have been in favor of the 1981 enlargement even if members were bargaining over a fixed budget.

Stochastic Stability In The Best Shot Game, Leonardo Boncinelli, Paolo Pin Nov 2010

Stochastic Stability In The Best Shot Game, Leonardo Boncinelli, Paolo Pin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The best shot game applied to networks is a discrete model of many processes of contribution to local public goods. It has generally a wide multiplicity of equilibria that we refine through stochastic stability. In this paper we show that, depending on how we define perturbations, i.e. the possible mistakes that agents can make, we can obtain very different sets of stochastically stable equilibria. In particular and non-trivially, if we assume that the only possible source of error is that of an agent contributing that stops doing so, then the only stochastically stable equilibria are those in which the maximal …

Group Bargaining And Conflict, Nicolas Quérou Nov 2010

Group Bargaining And Conflict, Nicolas Quérou

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We consider a situation where groups negotiate over the allocation of a surplus (which is used to fund group specific goods). Each group is composed of agents who have differing valuations for public goods. Members choose a representative to take decisions on their behalf. Specifically, representatives can decide to enter either a (cooperative) negotiation protocol or a conflict to appropriate the surplus. In the cooperative negotiations, disagreement corresponds to a pro rata allocation (as a function of the size of the groups). We analyse the conditions (on the internal composition of the groups) under which conflict will be preferred to …

The Survival Of The Conformist: Social Pressure And Renewable Resource Management, Alessandro Tavoni, Maja Schlüter, Simon Levin Nov 2010

The Survival Of The Conformist: Social Pressure And Renewable Resource Management, Alessandro Tavoni, Maja Schlüter, Simon Levin

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This paper examines the role of pro-social behavior as a mechanism for the establishment and maintenance of cooperation in resource use under variable social and environmental conditions. By coupling resource stock dynamics with social dynamics concerning compliance to a social norm prescribing non-excessive resource extraction in a common pool resource (CPR), we show that when reputational considerations matter and a sufficient level of social stigma affects the violators of a norm, sustainable outcomes are achieved. We find large parameter regions where norm-observing and norm-violating types coexist, and analyze to what extent such coexistence depends on the environment.

Information, Stability And Dynamics In Networks Under Institutional Constraints, Norma Olaizola, Federico Valenciano Nov 2010

Information, Stability And Dynamics In Networks Under Institutional Constraints, Norma Olaizola, Federico Valenciano

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In this paper we study the effects of institutional constraints on stability, efficiency and network formation. More precisely, an exogenous "societal cover" consisting of a collection of possibly overlapping subsets that covers the whole set of players and such that no set in this collection is contained in another specifies the social organization in different groups or "societies". It is assumed that a player may initiate links only with players that belong to at least one society that s/he also belongs to, thus restricting the feasible strategies and networks. In this way only the players in the possibly empty "societal …

Static And Dynamic Efficiency Of Irreversible Health Care Investments Under Alternative Payment Rules, Rosella Levaggi, Michele Moretto, Paolo Pertile Nov 2010

Static And Dynamic Efficiency Of Irreversible Health Care Investments Under Alternative Payment Rules, Rosella Levaggi, Michele Moretto, Paolo Pertile

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The paper studies the incentive for providers to invest in new health care technologies under alternative payment systems, when the patients' benefits are uncertain. If the reimbursement by the purchaser includes both a variable (per patient) and a lump-sum component, efficiency can be ensured both in the timing of adoption (dynamic) and the intensity of use of the technology (static). If the second instrument is unavailable, a trade-off may emerge between static and dynamic efficiency. In this context, we also discuss how the regulator could use the control of the level of uncertainty faced by the provider as an instrument …

Diffusion Of Innovations On Community Based Small Worlds: The Role Of Correlation Between Social Spheres, Emily Tanimura Nov 2010

Diffusion Of Innovations On Community Based Small Worlds: The Role Of Correlation Between Social Spheres, Emily Tanimura

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Which types of networks favor the diffusion of innovations in the sense that an innovation whose intrinsic benefits are greater than those of an established choice will be able to replace the latter when it is initially used only by a small fraction of a large population? For deterministic and regular networks there are characterizations, based on a coordination game model of the diffusion of innovations. Here we study this question for a class of irregular random networks, Small world networks, which are of interest as more realistic models of social networks. We consider a random graph model based on …

Orphan, Indiana, David Dodd Lee

University of Akron Press Publications

Orphan, Indiana is a collection of spontaneous outbursts framed by reticence and the guiding mania of the subconscious. Profane and poignant, accidental-seeming but soaring with satirical intent, David Dodd Lee's poems capture a verisimilitude that's phenomenological, and yet of the moment.

Core-Stable Rings In Second Price Auctions With Common Values, Françoise Forges, Ram Orzach Nov 2010

Core-Stable Rings In Second Price Auctions With Common Values, Françoise Forges, Ram Orzach

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

In a common value auction in which the information partitions of the bidders are connected, all rings are core-stable. More precisely, the ex ante expected utilities of rings, at the (noncooperative) sophisticated equilibrium proposed by Einy, Haimanko, Orzach and Sela (Journal of Mathematical Economics, 2002), describe a cooperative game, in characteristic function form, in spite of the underlying strategic externalities. A ring is core-stable if the core of this characteristic function is not empty. Furthermore, every ring can implement its sophisticated equilibrium strategy by means of an incentive compatible mechanism.

Crime And Education In A Model Of Information Transmission, Darwin Cortés, Guido Friebel, Darío Maldonado Nov 2010

Crime And Education In A Model Of Information Transmission, Darwin Cortés, Guido Friebel, Darío Maldonado

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We model the decisions of young individuals to stay in school or drop-out and engage in criminal activities. We build on the literature on human capital and crime engagement and use the framework of Banerjee (1993) that assumes that the information needed to engage in crime arrives in the form of a rumor and that individuals update their beliefs about the profitability of crime relative to education. These assumptions allow us to study the effect of social interactions on crime. We first show that a society with fully rational students is less vulnerable to crime than an otherwise identical society …

Three Cards, Josh Wilker Nov 2010

Three Cards, Josh Wilker

Booth

I started writing about my childhood baseball cards a little over a decade ago out of desperation. I didn't have a job, any my money was running out, and the novel I purported to be working on was dying of pretentiousness and exhaustion. Writing about baseball cards didn't solve any of those problems. But there was some life in it, at least. Over the years it has grown into a practice of sorts, or maybe it's a hobby, like building ships in bottles, who knows, but either way it seems to help keep me from completely unraveling.
