Chronology Of The Grotte Du Renne (France) And Implications For The Context Of Ornaments And Human Remains Within The Châtelperronian, Thomas Higham, Roger Jacobi, Michèle Julien Nov 2010

Chronology Of The Grotte Du Renne (France) And Implications For The Context Of Ornaments And Human Remains Within The Châtelperronian, Thomas Higham, Roger Jacobi, Michèle Julien

KIP Articles

There is extensive debate concerning the cognitive and behavioral adaptation of Neanderthals, especially in the period when the earliest anatomically modern humans dispersed into Western Europe, around 35,000–40,000 B.P. The site of the Grotte du Renne (at Arcy-sur-Cure) is of great importance because it provides the most persuasive evidence for behavioral complexity among Neanderthals. A range of ornaments and tools usually associated with modern human industries, such as the Aurignacian, were excavated from three of the Châtelperronian levels at the site, along with Neanderthal fossil remains (mainly teeth). This extremely rare occurrence has been taken to suggest that Neanderthals were …

Supply Sensitive Services In Swiss Ambulatory Care: An Analysis Of Basic Health Insurance Records For 2003-2007, André Busato, Pius Matter, Beat Künzi, David C. Goodman Nov 2010

Supply Sensitive Services In Swiss Ambulatory Care: An Analysis Of Basic Health Insurance Records For 2003-2007, André Busato, Pius Matter, Beat Künzi, David C. Goodman

Dartmouth Scholarship

Swiss ambulatory care is characterized by independent, and primarily practice-based, physicians, receiving fee for service reimbursement. This study analyses supply sensitive services using ambulatory care claims data from mandatory health insurance. A first research question was aimed at the hypothesis that physicians with large patient lists decrease their intensity of services and bill less per patient to health insurance, and vice versa: physicians with smaller patient lists compensate for the lack of patients with additional visits and services. A second research question relates to the fact that several cantons are allowing physicians to directly dispense drugs to patients ('self-dispensation') whereas …

Virtual Coatings Application System, Jason M. Ebsensberger, Michael J. Bolick, Richard J. Klein Ii, Eric C. Peterson, Chad J. Zalkin, James B. Fisher, Leslie C. Hughes Nov 2010

Virtual Coatings Application System, Jason M. Ebsensberger, Michael J. Bolick, Richard J. Klein Ii, Eric C. Peterson, Chad J. Zalkin, James B. Fisher, Leslie C. Hughes

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)

A virtual coatings application system has several features to enhance the realism of simulated spray painting. The system generally includes a display screen on which is defined a virtual surface (such as a truck door) that is intended to be virtually painted or coated by the user. Alternatively, the system includes a head-mounted display unit that displays a virtual spray painting environment in which the virtual surface is defined. The user operates an instrumented spray gun controller that outputs one or more signals representing data as to the status of the controls on the spray gun controller. The system also …

Managing Government Business-Relations In Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr. Nov 2010

Managing Government Business-Relations In Pakistan, Ishrat Husain Dr.

Faculty Research - Talks, Speeches, & Discourse

I wish to thank the Management Association of Pakistan for inviting me this afternoon to attend this ceremony. As I am privileged to address a highly distinguished audience I would like to share my thoughts on a subject about which there is very little open debate and discourse. The topic I have chosen this afternoon “Managing Government Business – Relations in Pakistan” is quite critical to all the stakeholders in the economy of Pakistan. In almost all nation-states of the world, private businesses have to co-exist with governments. The balance between the two in economic space varies a lot. On …

Atmospheric Compensation Over Case Ii Waters: Simultaneous Aerosol And Water Constituent Retrieval, Donald Taylor Nov 2010

Atmospheric Compensation Over Case Ii Waters: Simultaneous Aerosol And Water Constituent Retrieval, Donald Taylor

Theses

In many algorithms designed to retrieve water constituent concentrations, an assumption of negligible water-leaving radiance is made in the near infrared (NIR) wavelengths (750-950 [nm]). This allows fairly accurate atmospheric correction to be applied to the oceanic imagery. Given this assumption, it is possible to derive model estimates of aerosol type and density and compensate for its effects in other regions of the spectrum. Unfortunately this assumption is only valid in areas of very low total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations, such as open ocean waters. Increased TSS load causes significant back-scattering within the water, increasing the water leaving signal in …

A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With The August 2006 Timing Glitch Of The Vela Pulsar, Duncan Brown, J. Abadie Nov 2010

A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With The August 2006 Timing Glitch Of The Vela Pulsar, Duncan Brown, J. Abadie

Physics - All Scholarship

The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasi-normal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two co-located Hanford gravitational wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a …

Search For Rare And Forbidden Decays Of Charm And Charmed-Strange Mesons To Final States H^+- E^-+ E^+, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, T. Skwarnicki Nov 2010

Search For Rare And Forbidden Decays Of Charm And Charmed-Strange Mesons To Final States H^+- E^-+ E^+, Raymond Mountain, Marina Artuso, S. Blusk, T. Skwarnicki

Physics - All Scholarship

We have searched for flavor-changing neutral current decays and lepton-number-violating decays of D^+ and D^+_s mesons to final states of the form h^+- e^-+ e^+, where h is either \pi or K. We use the complete samples of CLEO-c open-charm data, corresponding to integrated luminosities of 818 pb^-1 at the center-of-mass energy E_CM = 3.774 GeV containing 2.4 x 10^6 D^+D^- pairs and 602 pb^-1 at E_CM = 4.170 GeV containing 0.6 x 10^6 D^*+-_s D^-+_s pairs. No signal is observed in any channel, and we obtain 90% confidence level upper limits on branching fractions B(D^+ --> \pi^+ e^+ e^-) …

Concepts Of Bias And Appointments To The Governing Council Of The Canadian Institutes Of Health Research, Elaine Gibson Nov 2010

Concepts Of Bias And Appointments To The Governing Council Of The Canadian Institutes Of Health Research, Elaine Gibson

Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press

In October 2009, the academic health research community and the pharmaceutical industry were brought closer together with the appointment of Dr. Bernard Prigent, vice-president of Pfizer Canada, to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). This bridging of the two worlds has stirred up considerable debate before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health, in letters to CMAJ and in an online petition that garnered more than 4400 signatures. There are at least two distinct and vocal camps in the debate: those categorically in favour (including the federal minister of health and the president of …

The Monster In The Closet: Misperception Of Mental Illness, Sarah Alexandra Bernstein Nov 2010

The Monster In The Closet: Misperception Of Mental Illness, Sarah Alexandra Bernstein

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Mental illness affects all major aspects of an individual‟s life. From basic needs such as shelter and employment, to interactions with family, partners, and friends, the diagnosis represents likely difficulties due to stigma and negative attitudes. Efforts to bring forth the recognition and acceptance of mental illness in the United States, as well as around the world, start by confronting misconceptions through examination of causes. Increased access to needed resources and funding for treatment are also needed and may be accomplished through the use of media, education, and rising voices lobbying for the rights of people with mental illness.

Coaching Efficacy With Academic Leaders: A Phenomenological Investigation, Deanna Lee Vansickel-Peterson Nov 2010

Coaching Efficacy With Academic Leaders: A Phenomenological Investigation, Deanna Lee Vansickel-Peterson

College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The purpose of this psychological phenomenological research was to understand the efficacy of life coaching from the perspective of academic leaders. To date, not one investigation or attempt has been made towards the above stated purpose. This study includes a theoretical overview and a review of the coaching literature from Socrates (469-399 BC) to current day Humanistic theory presented in part by Roger (1902-1987). This process included data collection from five academic leaders who have been coached for at least two years. Levels of analysis of 365 statements, quote and/or comments produced finding of efficacy in life coaching with academic …

Fusarium Head Blight: Winter Wheat Cultivar Responses And Characterization Of Pathogen Isolates, John Fredy Hernandez Nopsa Nov 2010

Fusarium Head Blight: Winter Wheat Cultivar Responses And Characterization Of Pathogen Isolates, John Fredy Hernandez Nopsa

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fusarium Head Blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L). FHB reduces yield and grain quality and causes accumulation of the mycotoxin deoxynivalenol (DON) in grain. Cultivar resistance is one of the most effective management strategies for FHB. Experiments were conducted to 1) identify winter wheat cultivars with resistance to FHB and DON accumulation, 2) determine the effect of winter wheat cultivar on the relationship between FHB and DON concentration, and 3) identify the major species of Fusarium causing FHB in Nebraska and characterize its isolates. Differences (P ≤ 0.05) were detected among cultivars in …

Recent Uplift Of The Burica Peninsula, Panama And Costa Rica, Recorded By Marine Terraces, Daniel Davidson Nov 2010

Recent Uplift Of The Burica Peninsula, Panama And Costa Rica, Recorded By Marine Terraces, Daniel Davidson

Earth and Environmental Geosciences Student Honors Theses

Deformation and uplift of the Burica Peninsula along the Panama-Costa Rica border results from eastward migration of the Panama Triple Junction (PTJ); the boundary between three tectonic plates. As the triple junction migrates to the southeast at ~55 mm/yr along the Middle America Trench (MAT), the Panama Fracture Zone (PFZ), separating the Cocos and Nazca plates, subducts under the Panama microplate. Differences in the thickness of the plates across the PFZ, as well as the rate and angle of subduction between the Cocos and Nazca plates, cause the Panama microplate to step up and over the Cocos plate. A flight …
