Characterization Of The Structure And Function Of Nucleotide Pyrophosphatase/Phosphodiesterase 7, Irene Werengekha Wanjala

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phosphdiesterase (NPP) 7 , also known as alkaline sphingomyelinase (Alk-SMase) is a membrane-anchored ectoenzyme initially discovered in the intestinal tract in 1969. It is the most recently identified NPP isoform. The NPP family of enzymes currently consists of seven members, NPP1-7, numbered according to the order in which they were first associated with the NPP family.NPP enzymes hydrolyze a wide range of substrates. NPP1 and 3 are nucleotide pyrophosphatases that cleave inorganic phosphate from nucleatides and their derivatives. In contrast, NPP2, NPP6 and NPP7 are phosphodiesterases that hydrolyze phosphodiester bonds in lysolipid substrates and their derivatives. NPP4 and NPP5 are …

Inseparable Companion: The Consolation Of Heloise, Carol Parsons Ciscel Nov 2010

Inseparable Companion: The Consolation Of Heloise, Carol Parsons Ciscel

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The twelfth-century love story of Abelard and Heloise, which has been both an inspiration for poets and novelists and a challenge and boon to historians, has often suffered from misinterpretation. Abelard was master of the Paris schools and wrote many works which have survived, but Heloise is represented almost entirely through letter exchanges with him. This work focuses on Heloise, now established as a scholar in her own right and the author of her letters, but importantly, it turns some crucial aspects of the traditional picture of Heloise upside down. She has been painted as a woman of unusually robust …

America's P.R.I.D.E.: Entertainment Education As A Health Communication Intervention Strategy For Middle School And High School Students, Elizabeth Stephens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this dissertation research was to study the ways that members of the P.R.I.D.E. club at Houston High School in Germantown, Tennessee used entertainment-education communication strategies in their presentations and the interpersonal persuasive strategies members used when talking with peers about substance abuse. Participants in this study were members of the P.R.I.D.E. club and ranged in age from 14-years-old to 18-years-old. My research questions examined how P.R.I.D.E. incorporated constructs of entertainment-education (emotional involvement, identification with characters, self-efficacy, perceived realism, and fear appeals) into their presentations to persuade peers to abstain from using alcohol, tobacco, and drugs, and examined …

Requirement For Golgi-Localized Pi(4)P In Fusion Of Copii Vesicles With Golgi Compartments, Andres Lorente-Rodriguez, Charles Barlowe Nov 2010

Requirement For Golgi-Localized Pi(4)P In Fusion Of Copii Vesicles With Golgi Compartments, Andres Lorente-Rodriguez, Charles Barlowe

Dartmouth Scholarship

The role of specific membrane lipids in transport between endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and Golgi compartments is poorly understood. Using cell-free assays that measure stages in ER-to-Golgi transport, we screened a variety of enzyme inhibitors, lipid-modifying enzymes, and lipid ligands to investigate requirements in yeast. The pleckstrin homology (PH) domain of human Fapp1, which binds phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PI(4)P) specifically, was a strong and specific inhibitor of anterograde transport. Analysis of wild type and mutant PH domain proteins in addition to recombinant versions of the Sac1p phosphoinositide-phosphatase indicated that PI(4)P was required on Golgi membranes for fusion with coat protein complex II (COPII) …

Tilted Versus Reasonable Interpretation Of Tax Law, Steve R. Johnson Nov 2010

Tilted Versus Reasonable Interpretation Of Tax Law, Steve R. Johnson

Scholarly Publications

In part, Interpretation Matters is about the craft of advocacy, how statutory interpretation arguments can be effectively made – and effectively countered – in state and local tax cases. For example, when one’s opponent in such a case invokes one or another of the canons of construction, how is that canon to be blunted?

One strategy we often have explored is fighting fire with fire – that is, identifying and asserting another recognized canon that leads to an opposite conclusion. One of the most famous articles on statutory interpretation arrayed dozens of pairs of canons that seemingly contradict each other. …
