Silicon-Controlled Rectifier (Scr) Device For High-Voltage Electrostatic Discharge (Esd) Applications, Juin Liou, Zhiwei Liu, James Vinson Nov 2010

Silicon-Controlled Rectifier (Scr) Device For High-Voltage Electrostatic Discharge (Esd) Applications, Juin Liou, Zhiwei Liu, James Vinson

UCF Patents

A silicon controlled rectifier (SCR) device having a high holding voltage includes a PNP transistor and an NPN transistor, each transistor having both p-type and n-type dopant regions in their respective emitter areas. The device is particularly suited to high voltage applications, as the high holding voltage provides a device which is more resistant to latchup subsequent to an electrostatic discharge event compared to devices having a low holding voltage.

Chemical Plume Tracing By Discrete Fourier Analysis And Particle Swarm Optimization, Eugene Jun Jie Neo, Eldin Wee Chuan Lim Nov 2010

Chemical Plume Tracing By Discrete Fourier Analysis And Particle Swarm Optimization, Eugene Jun Jie Neo, Eldin Wee Chuan Lim

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

A novel methodology for solving the chemical plume tracing problem that utilizes data from a network of stationary sensors has been developed in this study. During a toxic chemical release and dispersion incident, the imperative need of first responders is to determine the physical location of the source of chemical release in the shortest possible time. However, the chemical plume that develops from the source of release may evolve into a highly complex distribution over the entire contaminated region, making chemical plume tracing one of the most challenging problems known to date. In this study, the discrete Fourier series method …

Criminal Intelligence Career Development – Supporting The Case For Integration And Inclusion, Wayne Snell

Australian Security and Intelligence Conference

The implementation of a developmental continuum for intelligence professionals, based on a traditional competency model may be ubiquitous across the breadth of intelligence. This paper argues that specialised contextual and cultural education and training and subsequent recognition of those skills, knowledge and attributes, is an essential element in achieving organisational and individual objectives for criminal intelligence professionals. The full integration of criminal intelligence operations into police and law enforcement decision making at the tactical, operational and strategic levels is an aspirational step in achieving a multidisciplinary operational environment. The delineation of intelligence practitioners based on employment status, facilitated by the …

Error Correcting Codes For Cooperative Broadcasting, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza Nov 2010

Error Correcting Codes For Cooperative Broadcasting, Robert H. Morelos-Zaragoza

Faculty Publications

This talk considers the design and implementation of error correcting codes for cooperative broadcasting in wireless networks. Focus is on the case of two cooperating sources transmitting two classes of information to a single receiver. This case was first introduced in the seminal work of Bergmans and Cover and referred to as "over the air mixing". Two levels of protection are provided using two low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes combined using Plotkin's |u|u+v|-construction. Expressions are derived for the bit metrics used in iterative decoding for two-level codes combined with BPSK, QPSK and 4-PAM modulations. Several examples of codes and their performance …

Exploring Relationships Between Racism, Housing And Child Illness In Remote Indigenous Communities, Naomi Priest, Yin Paradies, Matthew Stevens, Ross Bailie Nov 2010

Exploring Relationships Between Racism, Housing And Child Illness In Remote Indigenous Communities, Naomi Priest, Yin Paradies, Matthew Stevens, Ross Bailie

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

Background Although racism is increasingly acknowledged as a determinant of health, few studies have examined the relationship between racism, housing and child health outcomes. Methods Cross-sectional data from the Housing Improvement and Child Health study collected in ten remote indigenous communities in the Northern Territory, Australia were analysed using hierarchical logistic regression. Carer and householder self-reported racism was measured using a single item and child illness was measured using a carer report of common childhood illnesses. A range of confounders, moderators and mediators were considered, including socio-demographic and household composition, psychosocial measures for carers and householders, community environment, and health-related …

What Are The Implications Of Venezuela's Nuclear Ambitions?, Inter-American Dialogue's Latin American Energy Advisor

Latin American Energy Dialogue, White Papers and Reports

Last month, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev announced plans to build the first nuclear power plant in Venezuela, a two-unit facility with a capacity of 2,400 megawatts and a research reactor to produce isotopes for medical and agricultural purposes, Russian media reported. How are Venezuela's nuclear power plans being perceived by neighbors or other countries in the world worried about the potential for the proliferation of nuclear weapons? Is nuclear energy the best option for Venezuela's power grid, long criticized for being outdated and inefficient?

Faculty Publications

Near-surface waters ranging from the Pacific subarctic (58°N) to the Southern Ocean (66°S) contain the neurotoxin domoic acid (DA), associated with the diatom Pseudo-nitzschia. Of the 35 stations sampled, including ones from historic iron fertilization experiments (SOFeX, IronEx II), we found Pseudo-nitzschia at 34 stations and DA measurable at 14 of the 26 stations analyzed for DA. Toxin ranged from 0.3 fg·cell-1 to 2 pg·cell-1, comparable with levels found in similar-sized cells from coastal waters. In the western subarctic, descent of intact Pseudo-nitzschia likely delivered significant amounts of toxin (up to 4 μg of DA·m-2·d …

The Unit Rbf Network: Experiments And Preliminary Results, Peter G. Anderson Nov 2010

The Unit Rbf Network: Experiments And Preliminary Results, Peter G. Anderson

Articles

URBF, the unit radial basis function network is an RBF neural network with all second layer weights set to +/- 1. The URBF models functions or physical phenomena by sampling their behaviors at various probe points, and correcting the model, more and more delicately (i.e., using Gaussian functions with ever narrower spread), when discrepancies are discovered. The probe points---input space positions to test and adjust the network---are linear pixel shuffling points, used for their highly uniform sampling property. We demonstrate the network's performance on several examples. It shows its power via good extrapolation behavior: for smooth-boundary discriminations, very few new …

System And Technique For Retrieving Depth Information About A Surface By Projecting A Composite Image Of Modulated Light Patterns, Laurence G. Hassebrook, Daniel L. Lau, Chun Guan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Patents

A technique, associated system and program code, for retrieving depth information about at least one surface of an object, such as an anatomical feature. Core features include: projecting a composite image comprising a plurality of modulated structured light patterns, at the anatomical feature; capturing an image reflected from the surface; and recovering pattern information from the reflected image, for each of the modulated structured light patterns. Pattern information is preferably recovered for each modulated structured light pattern used to create the composite, by performing a demodulation of the reflected image. Reconstruction of the surface can be accomplished by using depth …

Attitudes About Addiction: A National Study Of Addiction Educators, Angela D. Broadus, Joyce A. Hartje, Nancy A. Roget, Kristy L. Cahoon, Samantha S. Clinkinbeard

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

The following study, funded by the National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), utilized the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI; Luke, Ribisl, Walton, & Davidson, 2002) to examine addiction attitudes in a national sample of U.S. college/university faculty teaching addiction-specific courses (n = 215). Results suggest that addiction educators view substance abuse as a coping mechanism rather than a moral failure, and are ambivalent about calling substance abuse or addiction a disease. Most do not support individual efficacy toward recovery, the ability to control use, or social use after treatment. Modifiers of addiction educator attitudes include level of college education; teaching …
