Enhanced Mimo Lmmse Turbo Equalization, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao Dec 2010

Enhanced Mimo Lmmse Turbo Equalization, Jun Tao, Jingxian Wu, Yahong Rosa Zheng, Chengshan Xiao

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

We propose an enhanced linear minimum mean square error (LMMSE) turbo equalization scheme for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. the turbo equalizer employs soft interference cancelation (SIC), where tentative soft decisions of the interfering symbols are subtracted from the received samples before the LMMSE filtering. the enhanced LMMSE turbo equalization with SIC introduces two improvements over existing methods. First, unlike existing methods that completely rely on the a priori soft decisions at the equalizer input for SIC, the new scheme performs SIC by continuously updating the soft decisions with the a posteriori information of the symbols that have just been …

Extracting Physical Ic Models Using Near-Field Scanning, Zhenwei Yu, Jayong Koo, Jason A. Mix, Kevin Slattery, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Accurate modeling of chip and chip-package is critical for EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) and RFI (RF Interference) analysis and prediction. in this paper, a model based on an array of dipoles from near-field measurement is proposed. a simple active circuit is simulated in a 3-D full-wave simulation tool, and the dipole model is calculated from the near-field data in the simulation using inverse method with regularization technique. This model has clear physical meaning, and it is validated using field at another place. ©2010 IEEE.

An Equivalent Three-Dipole Model For Ic Radiated Emissions Based On Tem Cell Measurements, Siming Pan, Jingook Kim, Sungnam Kim, Jaesu Park, Heoncheol Oh, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

An equivalent dipole model is proposed in this paper to represent the source of radiated electromagnetic emissions from an integrated circuit (IC). the height of an IC is usually much smaller than its length and width, so only three dipole moments are sufficient to characterize an IC in terms of its electromagnetic emissions. the dipole moments can be extracted from three TEM cell measurements. the radiated fields from the IC can then be calculated based on the extracted dipole sources. This IC emission model with three dipole moments is validated using the far-field measurements in a semi anechoic chamber for …

Recently Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm has been applied to a range of problems in engineering with promising results. However, in most of the literature the standard PBIL with fixed learning rate has been used. It has been shown that when applied to dynamic environment as the one encountered in power systems, adaptive learning rate is more appropriate to use. in this paper, Population-Based Incremental Learning (PBIL) algorithm with adaptive learning rate is used to tune the parameters of a power system controller for damping power oscillations in a multi-machine power system. the optimization of controller's parameters has been performed …

Incorporating Correlation Matrices Into Hardware Triply Selective Fading Channel Emulators Using Kronecker Product, Fei Ren, Yahong R. Zheng Dec 2010

Incorporating Correlation Matrices Into Hardware Triply Selective Fading Channel Emulators Using Kronecker Product, Fei Ren, Yahong R. Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This article proposes a hardware triply selective Rayleigh fading channel emulator which is implemented by incorporating spatial and inter-tap correlation matrices into uncorrelated frequency-flat Rayleigh fading waveforms with a Kronecker product method. the Kronecker product of square roots of three correlation matrices are computed in real time via serial, parallel, or mixed serial-parallel computational methods and then combined with uncorrelated flat fading waveforms. a 4x4 multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) triply selective channel with 4 correlated delay-taps per subchannel is implemented on a Stratix III FPGA DSP development kit. We show that the three methods provide flexibility for designs in speed and …

Statistical Channel Modeling Of Wireless Shallow Water Acoustic Communications From Experiment Data, Jian Zhang, Jesse Cross, Yahong Rosa Zheng

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper analyzes statistical characteristics of underwater acoustic channels estimated by ocean experimental data. the baseband complex channel impulse responses (CIRs) are estimated by a time-domain least square method with sliding windows applied to long probing sequences. the probability density functions (PDF) of the real part, imaginary part, magnitude, and phase of the CIR are evaluated, and the two sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test is used to measure fitness of the magnitude PDF to the Gamma, Rayleigh, and compound-K distributions. the second-order statistics of the channel are also investigated in terms of autocorrelation function, channel coherence time, and scattering function. the experimental …

A Mean-Variance Optimization Algorithm, Istvan Erlich, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Nakawiro Worawat Dec 2010

A Mean-Variance Optimization Algorithm, Istvan Erlich, Ganesh K. Venayagamoorthy, Nakawiro Worawat

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new stochastic optimization algorithm referred to by the authors as the 'Mean-Variance Optimization' (MVO) algorithm is presented in this paper. MVO falls into the category of the so-called "population-Based stochastic optimization technique." the uniqueness of the MVO algorithm is based on the strategic transformation used for mutating the offspring based on mean-variance of the n-best dynamic population. the mapping function used transforms the uniformly distributed random variation into a new one characterized by the variance and mean of the n-best population attained so far. the searching space within the algorithm is restricted to the range - zero to one …

A hybrid approach to solve via impedance and model via transitions is presented in the paper. the method is a combination of via-plane capacitance extraction and the impedance matrices calculation of parallel plane pair. a new formulation of the integral equation method for axially symmetric geometry is used for the capacitance extraction. the method is validated with other model results. ©2010 IEEE.

Efficient Mid-Frequency Plane Inductance Computation, Fan Zhou, Albert E. Ruehli, Jun Fan Dec 2010

Efficient Mid-Frequency Plane Inductance Computation, Fan Zhou, Albert E. Ruehli, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In power distribution networks (PDN), the modelling of the mid-frequency inductance for Zpp type plane pairs is very important. It is a key step for the placement of the decoupling capacitors. This paper gives an efficient approach for the calculation of the inductance for different capacitor placements. the PEEC based formulations takes advantage of the opposite currents in the planes. This leads to compute time reductions and memory savings for both the element calculation and the matrix solve step. We also use a formulation where placement of capacitors leads to only small changes in the circuit matrix. Comparisons with other …

A Novel Impedance Definition Of A Parallel Plate Pair For An Intrinsic Via Circuit Model, Yaojiang Zhang, Gang Feng, Jun Fan Dec 2010

A Novel Impedance Definition Of A Parallel Plate Pair For An Intrinsic Via Circuit Model, Yaojiang Zhang, Gang Feng, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Rigorous analysis of via-plate-pair interactions requires the impedance of a plate pair to be defined in terms of radial transmission lines on perfect magnetic conductor (PMC) ports. the plate domain is not a solid plate pair but one with multiple PMC holes where conventional impedance definitions are not suitable. a new impedance definition is proposed where port voltages and currents are expressed in terms of the inward and outward zero-order modes of a radial transmission line. Radial scattering parameters among multiple radial ports are then introduced and the transforms between the radial scattering and impedance matrices are given. an analytical …

Equivalent Transmission-Line Model For Vias Connected To Striplines In Multilayer Print Circuit Boards, Siming Pan, Jianmin Zhang, Qinghua B. Chen, Jun Fan

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Vias are typical discontinuities for high-speed signal transmission in printed circuit boards. Previous work has studied the through-hole via connections from the top layer to the bottom between microstrip traces and proposed an equivalent transmission-line model for impedance matching between traces and vias. in this paper, the equivalent transmission-line model is extended for the via structures connected to strip lines based on modal decomposition. Both single-ended and differential cases are discussed, and the effects of the model parameters on the performance of signal transition are also investigated. the extended equivalent transmission-line model is accurate and fast to be embedded in …

Frequency-Domain Turbo Detection For Ldpc-Coded Single-Carrier Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Longbao Wang, Jun Tao, Chengshan Xiao, T. C. Yang Dec 2010

Frequency-Domain Turbo Detection For Ldpc-Coded Single-Carrier Mimo Underwater Acoustic Communications, Longbao Wang, Jun Tao, Chengshan Xiao, T. C. Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This paper proposes a frequency-domain detection scheme for single-carrier multiple-input, multiple-output (MIMO) underwater acoustic (UWA) communication using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. the new scheme employs turbo equalization technology together with iterative decoding technique, leading to a double-layer turbo detection structure. in the outer-layer turbo equalization, a soft-decision frequency-domain equalizer (FDE) iteratively exchanges soft information with the soft-decision LDPC channel decoder. within each outer-layer iteration, the LDPC decoder performs inner-layer iterative decoding with sum-product algorithm. the new scheme achieves excellent detection performance attributing to the double layers of iterative operation, which has been tested by experimental data measured in two undersea …

3-D Virtual World Education: An Empirical Comparison With Face-To-Face Classroom, Xiaofeng Chen, Keng Siau, Fiona Fui-Hoon Nah

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

3-D virtual worlds are increasing in popularity as a means of pedagogical delivery in higher education. In this research, we assess the relative effectiveness of a 3-D virtual world learning environment, Second Life, and traditional face-to-face learning environment. We also assess the efficacy of instructional strategies in these two learning environments and their effects on interactivity, perceived learning, and satisfaction. Our findings suggest that there is an interaction effect of learning environment and instructional strategy. Pair-wise comparisons indicate that when interactive instructional strategy is used, there is no significant difference for perceived learning and satisfaction between 3-D virtual world and …

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

This paper presents a structure first image inpainting method based on self-organizing map (SOM). SOM is employed to find the useful structure information of the damaged image. The useful structure information which includes relevant edges of the image is used to simulate the structure information of the lost or damaged area in the image. The structure information is described by distinct or indistinct curves in an image in this paper. The obtained target curves separate the damaged area of the image into several parts. As soon as each part of the damaged image is restored respectively, the damaged image is …

Robust Neural Network Rise Observer Based Fault Diagnostics And Prediction, James W. Fonda, S. (Sarangapani) Jagannathan, Steve Eugene Watkins Dec 2010

Robust Neural Network Rise Observer Based Fault Diagnostics And Prediction, James W. Fonda, S. (Sarangapani) Jagannathan, Steve Eugene Watkins

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel fault diagnostics and prediction scheme in continuous time is introduced for a class of nonlinear systems. The proposed method uses a novel neural network (NN) based robust integral sign of the error (RISE) observer, or estimator, allowing for semi-global asymptotic stability in the presence of NN approximation errors, disturbances and unmodeled dynamics. This is in comparison to typical results presented in the literature that show only boundedness in the presence of uncertainties. The output of the observer/estimator is compared with that of the nonlinear system and a residual is used for declaring the presence of a fault when …

Map Estimation For Graphical Models By Likelihood Maximization, Akshat Kumar, Shlomo Zilberstein Dec 2010

Map Estimation For Graphical Models By Likelihood Maximization, Akshat Kumar, Shlomo Zilberstein

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Computing a maximum a posteriori (MAP) assignment in graphical models is a crucial inference problem for many practical applications. Several provably convergent approaches have been successfully developed using linear programming (LP) relaxation of the MAP problem. We present an alternative approach, which transforms the MAP problem into that of inference in a finite mixture of simple Bayes nets. We then derive the Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithm for this mixture that also monotonically increases a lower bound on the MAP assignment until convergence. The update equations for the EM algorithm are remarkably simple, both conceptually and computationally, and can be implemented …

Evaluating Multiple Prevention Programs: Methods, Results, And Lessons Learned, Francesca Adler-Baeder, Jennifer Kepleman, Melody M. Griffin, David G. Schramm

Journal of Extension

Extension faculty and agents/educators are increasingly collaborating with local and state agencies to provide and evaluate multiple, distinct programs, yet there is limited information about measuring outcomes and combining results across similar program types. This article explicates the methods and outcomes of a state-level evaluation of approximately 200 individual programs across eight program types. A three-tiered approach was devised and implemented with a collaborative, iterative approach to assess the extent to which common program objectives were met. Results provided evidence of efficacy and impact, and offered tools for diverse stakeholders. Lessons learned and implications for Extension professionals are offered.

Self-Evaluation Of A Statewide Conservation Planning Program: Perceptions Of An Extension Partner, Jeremy Murdock, Robert F. Brzeszek, Timothy J. Schauwecker

Journal of Extension

Statewide organizations should use expert information gathered from their personnel to evaluate methods for reaching goals and objectives. As Extension personnel continue to partner on natural resource programs with other state and federal entities, they can improve information dissemination by learning about the conservation planning process. The study reported here was a statewide program evaluation of Natural Resource Conservation Service personnel and their opinions regarding conservation planning, incentive programs, and farmers' reasons for not adopting conservation programs. We recommend that Extension agencies study the perceptions and activities of partner entities that rely on them for information, materials, and programs.

Profiling Community Gardeners, Thomas W. Blaine, Parwinder S. Grewal, Ashley Dawes, Darrin Snider Dec 2010

Profiling Community Gardeners, Thomas W. Blaine, Parwinder S. Grewal, Ashley Dawes, Darrin Snider

Journal of Extension

A profile of participants in an Extension urban community gardening program reveals that the program is successful in bringing together a large number of people from diverse income and age groups. Community gardening contributes to a change in diet among 3/f4 of both new and continuing gardeners. Time spent in the garden per week is a function of number of years in the program, income, diet, whether the gardener donates produce to charity, and time taken to respond to the survey. Inclusion of the latter variable provided for control of potential non-response bias.

The End Of The Beginning And The Beginning Of The End: The Decline Of Public Agricultural Extension In Ontario, Lee-Anne S. Milburn, Susan J. Mulley, Carol Kline Dec 2010

The End Of The Beginning And The Beginning Of The End: The Decline Of Public Agricultural Extension In Ontario, Lee-Anne S. Milburn, Susan J. Mulley, Carol Kline

Journal of Extension

Canadian Extension has reached a critical point: the last 20 years have seen drastic reduction in governmental agricultural Extension services in Ontario. This article proposes that the breakdown of the Canadian Extension system has been the result of a variety of factors. The situation in Ontario suggests that Extension in the United States needs to recreate itself: it must address the changing profile of rural residents, shift program foci and delivery models, document and promote its benefits, redefine its contribution to the research system, (re)train Extension experts, use technology creatively, and maintain field staff to protects its role in rural …

Branding The Land Grant University: Stakeholders' Awareness And Perceptions Of The Tripartite Mission, Katie Abrams, Courtney Meyers, Tracy Irani, Lauri Baker Dec 2010

Branding The Land Grant University: Stakeholders' Awareness And Perceptions Of The Tripartite Mission, Katie Abrams, Courtney Meyers, Tracy Irani, Lauri Baker

Journal of Extension

Several land-grant institutions have adopted a name to encompass the teaching, research, and Extension components of the university, creating a brand identity for those public services. But, in the mind of stakeholders, has the connection between the tripartite mission and the brand name been made? The study reported here sought to determine agricultural producers' and community leaders' awareness and perceptions of the mission of a land-grant institution. Both groups were informed and held positive views about the research, education, and Extension activities of the university, but, unaided, did not connect these activities with the brand name.

The issue of antimicrobial resistance in food animal agriculture was addressed by conducting clinical trials to assess alternatives to antimicrobials in dairy calf-raising and developing outreach to three different audiences. Current research was integrated into Extension programs for calf-raisers, animal science and veterinary students, and food animal veterinarians. A complex issue such as resistance in bacteria from the use of antimicrobials in food animal agriculture requires an integrated approach—from the science to its translation to judicious drug use on-farm but also a wide reach, to multiple audiences.

Forgotten Highways: The Next Economic Development Opportunity?, John L. Gann Jr Dec 2010

Forgotten Highways: The Next Economic Development Opportunity?, John L. Gann Jr

Journal of Extension

Good but little-used non-Interstate ("UNterstate") highways can bring economic development to bypassed rural areas that attract neither industry nor tourists if travelers can be induced to use them for longer trips. Today these routes offer little-appreciated advantages compared with both flying and Interstate Highway travel that can be marketed to travelers. Enterprising Extension agents are well positioned to have major roles in launching and managing UNterstate Highway marketing programs.

Guarding The Chapel: The Story Of A Small Community, Kept Faith, And An Ever-Changing River, Leigh Ann Vanscoy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

This piece emerged from an article I wrote for The Poughkeepsie Journal, a Gannett daily newspaper in the Mid-Hudson region of New York State. As a summer reporter for the local section I wrote weekly “Dateline” stories that highlighted local and historical places in the area. I chose to write about my own church, St. Nicholas on the Hudson, because of its history and community spirit in the small river town of New Hamburg. Membership and resources were dropping and I hoped that my article would promote interest in the chapel. While researching and interviewing for that news story I …

"The Leprosy Of Unreality": The Capacity Of Suffering To Deform Or Redeem In Dickens's Great Expectations, A Tale Of Two Cities, And Little Dorrit, Kathryne Marie Hoyle-Brown

This thesis examines the ramifications of suffering in Dickensian transformation. Ideally, suffering should reveal the best aspects of human nature, and this thesis suggests that while it is possible to have pain without heroism, it is impossible to have heroism without pain. Couched within Dickens's discourse on suffering and redemption are both overt and covert messages to his Victorian audience as Dickens urges them to strip away their masks of pretense, "the leprosy of unreality"that enslaves them. Dickens delights in blurring apparently dichotomous boundaries as he paradoxically seeks reality through his fiction. For him, redemption is a discursive structure that …

The Homefront Food Fight: The Conflict Between The American Public And Enemy Prisoners Of War During World War Ii, Kathryn Elizabeth Russell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Food rationing and shortages on the homefront during World War II led to severe criticism by the American public of the rations given to enemy prisoners of war held in camps in the United States. In response to public and congressional criticism, the War Department reduced rations to enemy prisoners of war. The official exclamation proffered by the War Department for the reduction in rations was the food shortages across the country. However, analysis of the timeline of press reports and congressional investigations, coupled with the military's excessive food procurement activities, belie the assertion by the War Department that the …
