Family enterprises are very diversified and do not constitute a uniform group of economic subjects. Diversifying subjects of this type is bound most of all with their size and their membership to different sectors. Distinguishing family business is being carried out based on a number of criteria, coming down to pointing out connections between the property or running a company and the family in control. Family enterprise issues concern subjects controlled by one family, but problems of dependencies between family bonds and organizations are broader. Crystalline Order On Catenoidal Capillary Bridges, Mark Bowick, Zhenwei Yao

We study the defect structure of crystalline particle arrays on negative Gaussian curvature capillary bridges with vanishing mean curvature (catenoids). The threshold aspect ratio for the appearance of isolated disclinations is found and the optimal positions for dislocations determined. We also discuss the transition from isolated disclinations to scars as particle number and aspect ratio are varied.

Theatre of the Arts: Caribbean Intertextuality and the Muse of Place is a literary geography that explores how specific environments shape imaginative interventions into history and language. I begin by examining the unity of Derek Walcott's vision of the sea, tracing its ties to oral history, literary canon, and personal reveries of emplacement in Omeros and other epic-minded poems. I follow the sea to its continental origins, examining the Guyanas, an Amazonian bioregion on the borderlands of Guyana, Brazil, and Venezuela, as a place imaginatively remapped by twentieth-century novelists Alejo Carpentier, Wilson Harris, Mario de Andrade, and Pauline Melville. Declines in balance and postural control are believed to be the major neuromuscular factors that contribute to an increased risk of falling with age. Balance training has been reported to be an effective tool for increasing these parameters in older fallers, but its effectiveness in improving balance in higher-functioning, independent-living elders is uncertain. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to compare the impact of two formal balance-training interventions (Tai Chi and standardize balance exercise program [SBEP]) and an activity-promoting video game, the Wii Fit balance program. The Climate Action Plan for the University of Richmond establishes the framework for achieving the University’s climate action goals under the American College and University Presidents Climate Commitment. The University of Richmond’s goal is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions 30% by 2020 and 100% by 2050. In addition to emissions reduction, the Climate Action Plan articulates goals for embedding sustainability into the curricular and co-curricular aspects of a Richmond education. The plan has been developed under the leadership of the Sustainability Working Group and the University’s Sustainability Coordinator. Extraction Of Contact Resistance In Carbon Nanofiber Via Interconnects With Varying Lengths, Ken Li, Patrick Wilhite, Vinit Khera, Shoba Krishnan, Xuhui Sun, Cary Y. Yang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

A method to extract the contact resistance and bulk resistivity of vertically grown carbon nanofibers (CNFs) or similar one-dimensional nanostructures is described. Using a silicon-compatible process to fabricate a terrace test structure needed for the CNF length variation, the contact resistance is extracted by measuring in situ the resistances of individual CNFs with different lengths and within a small range of diameters using a nanoprober inside a scanning electron microscope. Accurate determination of contact resistances for various combinations of catalysts and underlayer metals can lead to eventual optimization of materials’ growth and device fabrication processes for CNF via interconnects.

Physics & Astronomy

Attachment of free, low-energy electrons to dinitrobenzene (DNB) in the gas phase leads to DNB as well as several fragment anions. DNB, (DNB-H), (DNB-NO), (DNB-2NO), and (DNB-NO(2)) are found to undergo metastable (unimolecular) dissociation. A rich pattern of resonances in the yield of these metastable reactions versus electron energy is observed; some resonances are highly isomer-specific. Most metastable reactions are accompanied by large average kinetic energy releases (KER) that range from 0.5 to 1.32 eV, typical of complex rearrangement reactions, but (1,3-DNB-H)(-) features a resonance with a KER of only 0.06 eV for loss of NO. (1,3-DNB-NO)(-) offers a rare …
