Evaluation Of Factors That Modulate Cellular Adipogenesis For Breast Tissue Engineering Strategies, Cheryl Gomillion
Evaluation Of Factors That Modulate Cellular Adipogenesis For Breast Tissue Engineering Strategies, Cheryl Gomillion
All Dissertations
It is estimated that this year more than 200,000 women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer. Treatment for most occurrences of breast cancer will often include surgical removal of the tumorigenic tissue, resulting in a soft tissue defect within the subcutaneous tissue of the skin. Post-surgical reconstruction methods are often sought by patients to restore the aesthetic function of the breast via cellular or non-cellular methods; however, because of complications associated with currently used methods for breast reconstruction, researchers are investigating tissue engineering methods to produce viable autologous adipose tissue for breast reconstruction.

Development And Characterization Of Novel Sub-Coatings With Polymorphic Brookite Titania Nanoparticles: Enhanced Uv/Vis Photocatalytic Antibacterial And Anticancer Properties, Donna Weinbrenner
All Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Nosocomial and community infections and biofilm formation from bacteria has increased significantly through adaptation combined with overuse of broad spectrum antibiotics. Because the world population continues to escalate, hospitals and long-term managed care will also escalate, thereby increasing transmission of infections, lowering patients' quality of health. Another disease on the rise throughout the world is skin cancer. A treatment modality that would cause less deleterious effects on the patient would be ideal. These two seemingly different issues could be solved with one product. First an inexpensive, safe, and non-selective antimicrobial surface coating would enhance the hospital arena and a …
Production And Characterization Of Aramid Copolymer Fibers For Use In Cut Protection, Jeffrey Moreland
Production And Characterization Of Aramid Copolymer Fibers For Use In Cut Protection, Jeffrey Moreland
All Dissertations
High-performance fibers such as para-aramids are used extensively in gloves for cut protection. However, the inherent cut resistance of these fibers and the relationship between cut resistance and other material properties is not known. To better understand cut resistance at the material level, an experiment was conducted using a lab-scale wet spinning system to produce and characterize aramid copolymer fibers.
To facilitate the use of lab-scale equipment, the experiment was conducted as a four-factor split-plot response surface design. The four treatment factors studied were solvent concentration in the coagulation bath, the amount of salt in the coagulation bath, the degree …

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are hydrophobic organic compounds consisting of two or more fused benzene rings. PAHs derive from many different sources including petroleum refining, wood treatment, and coal coking industries. Because of their structural stability and water insolubility, PAHs are extremely resistant to degradation. These compounds are also believed to have mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic effects. Therefore, there are currently 16 PAH compounds on the EPA's list of priority pollutants.
Many species of bacteria have the ability to breakdown these persistent pollutants. However, bioremediation strategies using these organisms have many unresolved issues. While laboratory experiments can easily demonstrate the …
Three Algorithms For Causal Learning, Roshan Ram Rammohan
Three Algorithms For Causal Learning, Roshan Ram Rammohan
Computer Science ETDs
The field of causal learning has grown in the past decade, establishing itself as a major focus in artificial intelligence research. Traditionally, approaches to causal learning are split into two areas. One area involves the learning of structures from observational data alone and the second, involves the methodologies of conducting and learning from experiments. In this dissertation, I investigate three different aspects of causal learning, all of which are based on the causal Bayesian network framework. Constraint based structure search algorithms that learn partially directed acyclic graphs as causal models from observational data rely on the faithfulness assumption, which is …
Simulating The Evolution Of Recruitment Behavior In Foraging Ants, Kenneth Letendre
Simulating The Evolution Of Recruitment Behavior In Foraging Ants, Kenneth Letendre
Computer Science ETDs
Spatial heterogeneity in the distribution of food is an important determinant of species' optimal foraging strategies, and of the dynamics of populations and communities. In order to explore the interaction of food heterogeneity and colony size in their effects on the behavior of foraging ant colonies, we built agent-based models of the foraging and recruitment behavior of harvester ants of the genus Pogonomyrmex. We optimized the behavior of these models using genetic algorithms over a variety of food distributions and colony sizes, and validated their behavior by comparison with data collected on harvester ants foraging for seeds in the field. …
The Preservation Of Archaeological Records And Photographs, Kelli Bacon
The Preservation Of Archaeological Records And Photographs, Kelli Bacon
Department of Anthropology: Theses and Student Research
Substantive and organized research about archaeological records and photograph preservation, especially those written by and for archaeologists, are few. Although the Society for American Archaeology has a code of ethics regarding archaeological records preservation, and the federal government has regulations regarding the care and preservation of federally owned archaeological collections, there is a lack of resources. This is detrimental to archaeology because not all archaeologists, given the maturity of the discipline, understand how important it is to preserve archaeological records and photographs. Without documents and photographs from projects, irreplaceable information is lost. This thesis adds to the existing body of …
The Molecular Mechanism Of Viral Transactivator Rta-Mediated Kaposi’S Sarcoma-Associated Herpesvirus (Kshv) Lytic Replication, Hui-Ju Wen
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Kaposi’s sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) is a member of the gamma-herpesvirinae subfamily and displays two distinct life phases, latency and lytic replication. Infection with KSHV mostly results in a latent state. A small population of infected cells can spontaneously undergo lytic phase, which is marked by abundant viral gene expression and production of infectious viral progeny. Lytic replication is important for transmission of KSHV in the population and development of diseases. RTA (replication and transcription activator) is a master regulator of KSHV lytic replication. Expression of RTA alone is sufficient to disrupt KSHV latency and initiate the lytic replication cascade. The …
Microsatellite Development, Population Structure And Demographic Histories For Two Species Of Amazonian Peacock Bass Cichla Temensis And Cichla Monoculus (Perciformes: Cichlidae)., Jason C. Macrander
Microsatellite Development, Population Structure And Demographic Histories For Two Species Of Amazonian Peacock Bass Cichla Temensis And Cichla Monoculus (Perciformes: Cichlidae)., Jason C. Macrander
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The Neotropics of South America represent one of the most diverse assemblages of freshwater organisms in the world. The geologic and ecological changes that have occurred throughout the Amazon and Orinoco River basins have resulted in the two most diverse rivers in the world producing very heterogeneous environments potentially influencing current population structure of Neotropical species. To investigate specific ecological and geological events influencing populations in these regions, I explore population structure and demographic histories of two species from the genus Cichla with wide distributions among the Amazon and Orinoco. First, I describe the methods used to isolate and characterize …
Relationship Between Inflation And Stock Market Returns: Evidence From Nigeria, Omotor G. Douglason
Relationship Between Inflation And Stock Market Returns: Evidence From Nigeria, Omotor G. Douglason
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
The linkage between stock prices and inflation has been subjected to extensive research in the past decades and has arouse the interests of academics, researchers, practitioners and policy makers globally, particularly since the 1990s. The issue has been the apparent anomaly of the negative relationship between inflation and stock market returns as most studies in the industrialized economies have shown. This paper investigates this relationship using monthly and quarterly data of Nigeria for the period 1985 to 2008. The findings of this paper seem to suggest that stock market returns may provide an effective hedge against inflation in Nigeria.
Is The Stock Market A Leading Indicator Of Economic Activity In Nigeria?, Alvan E. Ikoku
Is The Stock Market A Leading Indicator Of Economic Activity In Nigeria?, Alvan E. Ikoku
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
In an effort to address the lacuna in leading indicator studies of African economies and Nigeria in particular, this paper examines the causal relationships among stock market prices, real GDP and the index of industrial production in Nigeria, using quarterly data from 1984Q1 to 2008Q4. Granger causality tests indicate bidirectional causality between stock prices and GDP but no causality between stock prices and industrial production or between GDP and industrial production. Stock prices and GDP are found to be cointegrated, leading to the estimation of vector error correction models. Out-of-sample forecasts constructed with AR(1), ARIMA, structural ARIMA, and VEC models …
Monetary And Fiscal Policy Interactions In Nigeria: An Application Of A State-Space Model With Markov-Switching, Chuku V. Chuku
Monetary And Fiscal Policy Interactions In Nigeria: An Application Of A State-Space Model With Markov-Switching, Chuku V. Chuku
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This paper uses quarterly data to explore the monetary and fiscal policy interactions in Nigeria between 1970 and 2008. As a preliminary exercise, the paper examines the nature of fiscal policies in Nigeria using a vector autoregression (VAR) model. The simulated generalized impulse response graphs generated from the VAR estimation provides evidence of a non-Ricardian fiscal policy in Nigeria. Further, the paper analyzes the interactions between monetary and fiscal policies by applying a State-space model with Markov-switching to estimate the time-varying parameters of the relationship. The evidence indicates that monetary and fiscal policies in Nigeria have interacted in a counteractive …
Optimal Designs Approach To Portfolio Selection, Etukudo A. I.
Optimal Designs Approach To Portfolio Selection, Etukudo A. I.
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
In order to obtain the best tradeoff between risk and return, optimization algorithms are particularly useful in asset allocation in a portfolio mix. Such algorithms and proper solution techniques are very essential to investors in order to circumvent distress in business outfits. In this paper, we show that by minimizing the total variance of the portfolio involving stocks in two Nigerian banks which is a measure of risk, optimal allocation of investible funds to the portfolio mix is obtained. A completely new solution technique – modified super convergent line series algorithm which makes use of the principles of optimal designs …
A Distributional Analysis Of Out-Of-Pocket Healthcare Financing In Nigeria Using A New Decomposable Gini Index, Ichoku Eme Hyacinth, William M. Fonta, Abdelkrim Araar
A Distributional Analysis Of Out-Of-Pocket Healthcare Financing In Nigeria Using A New Decomposable Gini Index, Ichoku Eme Hyacinth, William M. Fonta, Abdelkrim Araar
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
This study applies a new method of decomposing total redistributive effect of taxation proposed by Duclos et al. (2003) to assess the redistributive effects of direct healthcare financing in Nigeria. This new framework makes it possible not only to introduce into the conventional Gini Index estimation framework a flexible ethical measure of aversion to inequality but also a novel concepts of horizontal inequity and re-ranking. The empirical results indicate that when the decision to utilize healthcare is always linked to the decision to pay for healthcare, as is the case in Nigeria, out-of-pocket payment, contrary to existing literature, may indeed …
Factors, Preventions And Correction Methods For Non-Response In Sample Surveys, Godwin Nwanzu Amahi
Factors, Preventions And Correction Methods For Non-Response In Sample Surveys, Godwin Nwanzu Amahi
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
Missing survey data occur because of unit and item non-response. This is practically independent of the method of data collection. As a result of the bias that non-response sometimes introduces in survey estimates, identifying factors that promote it, and taking measures of prevention and correction methods are clearly necessary. The standard method to compensate for unit non-response is by weighting adjustment, while item non-responses are handled by some form of imputation. This paper reviews factors that give rise to nonresponse and the corresponding methods used for its prevention and control. It also discusses their properties.
Addressing The Problem Of Non-Response And Response Bias, Fabian C. Okafor
Addressing The Problem Of Non-Response And Response Bias, Fabian C. Okafor
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
Survey planners and analysts in Nigeria have devoted much more attention to sampling errors at the expense of nonsampling errors (non-response and response errors). Sampling error is the degree to which the sample estimate differs from the average value of the characteristic due to chance. The present discussion will be centered on non-sampling error, which may present serious deficiencies in the statistics and render the survey useless. According to Platek and Gray (1986), “Non-response has been generally recognized as important measure of the quality of data since it affects the estimates by introducing a possible bias in the estimates and …
Statistics For National Development, Sani I. Doguwa
Statistics For National Development, Sani I. Doguwa
CBN Journal of Applied Statistics (JAS)
Good statistics that has been collected according to agreed good practices are crucial as a tool for development. Gross domestic product (GDP) and other measures of economic activity such as Gross National Income (GNI) together with their individual components, show how the economy is responding to government policy and other influences. The balance of payments can demonstrate the requirement for policy adjustments and is also one of the indicators scrutinised by potential foreign investors in the country. Agricultural statistics clearly have implications for longer-term planning, particularly if they show a move away from the land into urban areas or a …

The Amicus Curiae: Friends No More?, S. Chandra Mohan
Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law
A term commonly used in both common law and civil law jurisdictions and in domestic and international tribunals is the Latin term amicus curiae or a 'friend of the court'. Who is this friend of the court and what is his role in legal proceedings? Largely because of the remarkable manner in which this ancient institution has developed in different legal systems and been used differently even in countries sharing a common legal tradition, such as the United States and the Commonwealth countries, the important question is whether the amicus curiae can still be considered a 'friend' of any tribunal …

Lawmakers As Lawbreakers, Ittai Bar-Siman-Tov
William & Mary Law Review
How would Congress act in a world without judicial review? Can
lawmakers be trusted to police themselves? This Article examines
Congress’s capacity and incentives to enforce upon itself “the law of
congressional lawmaking”—a largely overlooked body of law that is
completely insulated from judicial enforcement. The Article explores
the political safeguards that may motivate lawmakers to engage in
self-policing and rule-following behavior. It identifies the major
political safeguards that can be garnered from the relevant legal,
political science, political economy, and social psychology scholarship,
and evaluates each safeguard by drawing on a combination of
theoretical, empirical, and descriptive studies about …
The Wrong Tool For The Job: The Ip Problem With Noncompetition Agreements, Viva R. Moffat
The Wrong Tool For The Job: The Ip Problem With Noncompetition Agreements, Viva R. Moffat
William & Mary Law Review
This Article argues that employee noncompetition agreements ought to be unenforceable. It begins by recognizing that there is momentum for change in the law of noncompetes: a number of states and the American Law Institute (ALI) are in the process of reconsidering noncompete doctrine, and recent empirical studies provide evidence as to the mostly negative effects of the agreements. Existing critiques have focused on the problematic nature of noncompetes within the employment relationship. This Article synthesizes those critiques, adding support from empirical studies, and then examines noncompetes from a new perspective.
Commentators have neither recognized nor evaluated the role noncompetes …
Why Are There Tax Havens?, Adam H. Rosenzweig
Why Are There Tax Havens?, Adam H. Rosenzweig
William & Mary Law Review
Recently, the issue of tax havens has risen to the fore of the fiscal policy debate, with tax havens being singled out as the root cause of many of the fiscal shortfalls plaguing the governments of the world. Surprisingly, however, although there has been a fair amount of literature on why tax havens are harmful to the modern international tax regime, which countries become tax havens, and what means are available to combat tax havens, there has been less written specifically on the underlying question of why, notwithstanding all these points, tax havens exist in the first place, or why …

Rejecting Refugees: Homeland Security's Administration Of The One-Year Bar To Asylum, Philip G. Schrag, Andrew I. Schoenholtz, Jaya Ramji-Nogales, James P. Dombach
William & Mary Law Review
Since 1980, the Refugee Act has offered asylum to people who flee to the United States to escape persecution in their homeland. In 1996, however, Congress amended the law to bar asylum—regardless of the merits of the underlying claim—for any applicant who fails to apply within one year of entering the United States, unless the applicant qualifies for one of two exceptions to the rule.
In the years since the bar was established, anecdotal reports have suggested that genuine refugees, with strong claims to asylum, have been rejected solely because of the deadline. Many scholars and practitioners suspected that this …

Journal of Medical Education
Physician manpower is considered to be an important index when evaluating medical service quality. Furthermore, gender has become an important topic recently. Variations in the gender profile of physicians may influence outcomes in terms of medical services. As a result, concern has focused lately on differences in the distributions of male and female physicians across specialties. We collected data from the Department of Education, Taiwan, and the National Health Insurance Database, Taiwan, in order to examine the male/female distribution of first year medical students, graduated medical students and new physicians over the years 1998 to 2007. Furthermore, we evaluated the …

The Chicago Experiment: Finding The Voice And Charting The Course Of Religious Education In The Church, Casey P. Griffiths
BYU Studies
In many professions, Latter-day Saints often struggle to find harmony between their religion and their career. This has been especially true in academia, in most of its diverse disciplines. These challenges were particularly fierce when the Church began developing its own corps of professional religious educators to teach and lead in the newly founded seminary and institute programs of the early twentieth century. In the early 1930s, religious educators in the Church developed a close relationship with the School of Divinity at the University of Chicago. Eleven young Latter-day Saint scholars earned advanced degrees at the school at the Church's …

A Question On My Mind: Robert Mccorkle's 1844 Letter To Joseph Smith, Hal R. Boyd, Susan E. Black
BYU Studies
Robert McCorkle (1807–1873) was one of many Americans curious about Mormonism. In 1844 he visited Nauvoo, Illinois, then headquarters of the Latter-day Saints. He hoped to obtain an audience with Joseph Smith but was able only to hear Smith speak at public meetings. When he returned to his home in Tennessee, he wrote to Smith, asking questions and describing his willingness to relocate to Nauvoo if Smith could prove that he was a true prophet. Interestingly, McCorkle wrote much of his letter in rhymed verse and hoped that Joseph Smith would reply in verse. It does not appear that Smith …
