Preparation And Characteristics Of Galangal Essential Oil/Alginate Microcapsules, T Jiamrungraksa, S Charuchinda
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
Galangal essential oil/alginate microcapsules were prepared by solidifying in liquid (orifice method) between sodium alginate and calcium chloride. The structure, morphology and also the thermal stability of the microcapsules were investigated by FT-IR, optical microscope, infrared moisture determination balance (IMDB) at 120°C for 2 hours. The galangal essential oil release content of microcapsules was estimated by measuring time course of weight of microcapsules determination by isothermal TGA at 37°C and 120°C. FT-IR spectral data confirmed the presence of galangal essential oil in the prepared microcapsules. An increase of sodium alginate concentration and oil content resulted in significantly higher average size …

In the United States, retirement income and health insurance are largely provided through private promises made incident to employment. These “benefit promises” are governed by a statute called ERISA, which many healthcare and pension scholars argue is the cause of fundamental problems with our nation’s health and retirement policy. Inevitably, however, they advance narrowly tailored proposals to amend the statute. This occurs because of the widely-held view that reform should leave undisturbed the underlying core of the statute. This Article develops a theory of ERISA designed to illustrate the unavoidable need for structural reform.

Re-Examining Customary International Law And The Federal Courts: An Introduction, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.
Re-Examining Customary International Law And The Federal Courts: An Introduction, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.
Journal Articles
Legal scholars have debated intensely the role of customary international law in the American federal system. The debate involves serious questions surrounding the United States's constitutional structure, foreign relations, and human rights. Despite an impressive body of scholarship, the debate has stood at an impasse in recent years, without either side garnering a consensus. This symposium–Re-examining Customary International Law and the Federal Courts–aspires to help advance the debate over the status of customary international law in the federal courts.
The symposium received thoughtful and constructive contributions from Professors Curtis A. Bradley, Bradford R. Clark, Andrew Kent, Carlos M. Vizquez, and …
The Political Branches And The Law Of Nations, Bradford R. Clark, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.
The Political Branches And The Law Of Nations, Bradford R. Clark, Anthony J. Bellia Jr.
Journal Articles
In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the U.S. Supreme Court went out of its way to follow background rules of the law of nations, particularly the law of state-state relations. As we have recently argued, the Court followed the law of nations because adherence to such law preserved the constitutional prerogatives of the political branches to conduct foreign relations and decide momentous questions of war and peace. Although we focused primarily on the extent to which the Constitution obligated courts to follow the law of nations in the early republic, the explanation we offered rested on an important, …

The kinematics model was derived following the Denavit-Hartenberg theory while the dynamic model was based on Euler-Lagrange equations of motion. The helicopter mathematical model includes the inertias of the counterweight, the beams and the propeller motors. This model was found competent …
Four Trinity Sunday Cantatas By J. S. Bach: An Examination And Comparison, Jeffry Blake Johnson
Four Trinity Sunday Cantatas By J. S. Bach: An Examination And Comparison, Jeffry Blake Johnson
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
While the four cantatas presented on Trinity Sunday during Bach's Leipzig years -- BWV 194, 176, 165, and 129 -- were all intended for the same liturgical day, a significant diversity exists among the four compositions. This diversity results from the variety of source material on which the cantatas were based, including material composed during the Leipzig years as well as material re-worked from previous Bach cantatas. The diversity also results from the different librettos and librettists that were utilized for the cantatas. Other factors include the variety of the cantatas' movement structures, performing forces, and the theological/philosophical themes that …

Equine Assisted Activities And Therapies, Carol C. Petitto
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is composed of three essays in which each carefully examines an important aspect of the field of equine assisted activities and therapies (EAAT). In the first essay, I review how equine assisted activities and therapies should be considered as an early intervention to help facilitate communication skills in children with autism. The majority of participants in NARHA programs have autism, and therefore it is critical to appraise the validity of EAAT as a positive intervention. Respondents of NARHA centers to a survey on their use of assessments in tracking the progress of their participants indicated that only 7% …
Mythscapes: Violent Spaces In Postmodern Literature And Culture, Jonathan R. Harvey
Mythscapes: Violent Spaces In Postmodern Literature And Culture, Jonathan R. Harvey
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This project focuses on British and American speculative novels written between the 1960s and the 2000s that position the reader to critique the contemporary world. Depictions of violent, fictional spaces, or what I call mythscapes, are playing an influential role in literary, political, religious, and even scientific discourses. The mythscape can initiate introspection on real issues by suggesting possible alternatives, conjecturing about potential consequences, and posing compelling comparisons. I define "mythscape" as an imagined space that features: a setting that is nonrealistic and radically different from, yet implicitly contrastive with, material reality; a rhetorical stance, which is inevitably grounded in …

Wireless Sensing System For Load Testing And Rating Of Highway Bridges, Yan Luo
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Structural capacity evaluation of bridges is an increasingly important topic in the effort to deal with the deteriorating infrastructure. Most bridges are evaluated through subjective visual inspection and conservative theoretical rating. Diagnostic load test has been recognized as an effective method to accurately assess the carrying capacity of bridges. Traditional wired sensors and data acquisition (DAQ) systems suffer drawbacks of being labor intensive, high cost, and time consumption in installation and maintenance. For those reasons, very few load tests have been conducted on bridges.;This study aims at developing a low-cost wireless bridge load testing & rating system that can be …

Effects Of Acid Mine Drainage And Acid Precipitation On Leaf Litter Breakdown Rates In Appalachian Headwater Streams, Mary Fiona Stewart
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Acid precipitation and acid mine drainage have dramatically altered chemical conditions and biological assemblages in streams throughout the central Appalachians. Effects of acidification on functional stream processes such as organic matter decomposition, however, remain poorly understood. The objectives of this study were to: (1) quantify differences in organic matter decomposition among reference streams, streams impacted by acid precipitation, and streams impacted by acid mine drainage; and (2) determine if lowered decomposition rates are the result of reduced microbial activity or altered invertebrate shredder assemblages or both. I quantified water chemistry, organic matter decomposition, microbial activity, and macroinvertebrate community structure in …

The Experiences Of Expatriate Teachers In International Schools: Five Ethnographic Case Studies, James S. Anderson Edd
The Experiences Of Expatriate Teachers In International Schools: Five Ethnographic Case Studies, James S. Anderson Edd
Dissertations
An increasingly global economy has produced a growing demand for teachers to work in international schools. However, data about teachers who elect to move abroad and work in international settings are limited. The lack of research in this area is surprising, given the relatively large number of expatriate teachers who work in international schools. The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of how expatriate teachers perceive their experiences in international schools and the role that these perceptions may play in their decisions to continue at a school or to seek other employment. In order to explore …

Ecology Of Trifolium Stoloniferum (Muhl. Ex A. Eaton), A Federally Endangered Vascular Plant, At The Fernow Experimental Forest In West Virginia, John Q. Burkhart
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This thesis presents work addressing the ecology of Trifolium stoloniferum, a federally endangered vascular plant species, in the Fernow Experimental Forest, West Virginia. In this thesis, I describe the historical ecology of this species and make a case that at one time it occurred in great abundance in association with trails created by large mammals and humans that intersected rich, open forests. Similar conditions exist at the Fernow Experimental Forest in West Virginia, but instead of large mammals, the requisite soil disturbance, control of competing vegetation, and canopy perforation are created by timber-harvesting related disturbances, particularly gap creation by tree …

Consumers' Attitudes Towards Traceability Of Food And Meat Products, Kulmani Rana
Consumers' Attitudes Towards Traceability Of Food And Meat Products, Kulmani Rana
Honors Theses
The purpose of this research is to survey consumers on their support for Radio Frequency Identification tags on fruit and vegetable containers and their willingness to pay for traceability of meat products. Ironically, there is no single universally accepted definition of traceability. There is evidence that the US has fallen behind its major trading partners in terms of implementing a nationwide food traceability system. Researchers in the past have concluded that consumers' WTP for traceability increases significantly when bundled with additional assurances. There is real concern among consumers about implementation of traceability systems in food as well as meat products. …

The Mglur2/3 Agonist Ly397268 Improves Morphometric And Behavioral Outcomes In R6/2 Huntington's Disease Mice, Dennis Craig Lafferty
The Mglur2/3 Agonist Ly397268 Improves Morphometric And Behavioral Outcomes In R6/2 Huntington's Disease Mice, Dennis Craig Lafferty
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
A prominent theory for the pathology of Huntington's Disease (HD) is the excitotoxic injury to the striatum. Continual exposure of ionotropic NMDA receptors to glutamate from the cortex can be excitotoxic in HD and leave striatal neurons vulnerable to damage. Activation of presynaptic mGluR2/3 by an agonist dampens glutamate release from corticostriatal terminals. Treatments that target excitoxicity and oxidative stress thus may improve some of the symptoms in HD patients and it is therefore logical to pursue therapies aimed in this direction. LY379268 is an inviting mGluR2/3 agonist that has been shown to be neuroprotective in hypoxic and ischemic injuries …

Therapeutic Gene Delivery To Human Pancreatic Islets For Treatment Of Diabetes And The Effect Of Tfo On Liver Fibrosis Induced By Bile Duct Ligation, Ravikiran Panakanti
Theses and Dissertations (ETD)
Ex vivo gene transfer can improve the outcome of islet transplantation for treating Type I diabetes. Earlier we have shown co‑expression of human vascular endothelial growth factor (hVEGF) and human interleukin‑1 receptor antagonist (hI‑1Ra) after transfection of plasmid DNA encoding these two genes. Due to poor transfection efficiency of plasmid DNA and the better known islet transduction efficiency of adenoviral (Adv) vectors, in this study, we constructed Adv‑hVEGF‑hIL‑1Ra by cloning hVEGF and hIL‑1Ra coding sequences and polyA signal under separate cytomegalovirus (CMV) promoters in Adenoquick plasmid (Ad 13.1). There was dose and time dependent expression of these genes after transduction …
