Characterization And Evaluation Of A Novel Tissue Engineered Aortic Heart Valve Construct, Mary Tedder Dec 2010

Characterization And Evaluation Of A Novel Tissue Engineered Aortic Heart Valve Construct, Mary Tedder

All Dissertations

Tissue engineering holds great promise for treatment of valvular diseases. Scaffolds for engineered heart valves must function immediately after implantation, but must also permit repopulation with autologous host cells and facilitate gradual remodeling.
Native aortic heart valves are composed of three layers, i.e. two strong external fibrous layers (ventricularis and fibrosa) separated by a central, highly hydrated spongiosa. The fibrous layers provide strength and resilience while the spongiosa layer facilitates shearing of the external layers. Our working hypothesis is that partially cross-linked collagen scaffolds that closely mimic the layered histo-architecture of the native valve would fulfill these requirements. To test …

A Meta-Analysis Of Human Factors Analysis And Classification System Causal Factors: Establishing Benchmarking Standards And Human Error Latent Failure Pathway Associations In Various Domains, Katherine Berry

All Dissertations

Many models of accident investigation have been created and have served as the basis for other tools and techniques. One of the most prominent techniques, Reason's Swiss Cheese Model (1990), is based on the idea of active and latent failures. Expanding on this idea, the Human Factors Analysis and Classification System (HFACS) was created with the idea to associate contributing factors and errors (Wiegmann & Shappell, 2003).
While HFACS has been frequently applied in the field of aviation in literature, other industry types are under-represented. Seventeen data sources encompassing various industry types were collected and included in this dissertation analysis. …

Influence Of The General Principles Of Community Law On Polish Antitrust Procedure, Marcin Kolasiński Dec 2010

Influence Of The General Principles Of Community Law On Polish Antitrust Procedure, Marcin Kolasiński

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This article presents the new legal problems related to the decentralization of the enforcement of Community competition law. The study shows that Regulation 1/2003 did not only give national antitrust authorities new rights and competences in that context but obligated them also to respect the general principles of Community law . This article contains an analysis of the first decisions issued by the UOKiK President on the basis of Community law and shows that the right of defence applicable to Polish proceedings differs from the standards developed by the European Commission and courts. The paper concludes with a number of …

Right To Be Heard Or Protection Of Confidential Information? Competing Guarantees Of Procedural Fairness In Proceedings Before The Polish Competition Authority, Maciej Bernatt

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The concept of procedural fairness plays an important role in the enforcement of competition law, which must not only be effective but also fair. Thus, legal institutions should guarantee a proper level of protection of the values of procedural fairness. This paper is dedicated to the possible conflict between the guarantees of procedural fairness that find their expression in the right to be heard and in the protection of confidential information. Both guarantees, the right to be heard on the one side, and the protection of confidential information on the other, should be properly balanced. Unlike EU law, Polish legislation …

Impact Of The New Approach To Article 102 Tfeu On The Enforcement Of The Polish Prohibition Of Dominant Position Abuse, Konrad Kohutek Dec 2010

Impact Of The New Approach To Article 102 Tfeu On The Enforcement Of The Polish Prohibition Of Dominant Position Abuse, Konrad Kohutek

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This paper will analyze the impact of the modernized approach to Article 102 TFEU on the application of the prohibition of dominant position abuse contained in Polish competition law. For that purpose, several questions will be answered. Has the consumer-welfare standard already become, or will it become (in particular under the influence of the effects-based approach), the decisive criteria for the finding of a violation of Article 9 of the Polish Competition Act as well as its past equivalents? Will EU’s new approach to the abuse of dominance lead to a re-orientation of the goals pursued by Polish competition law …

Who Controls Polish Transmission Masts? At The Intersection Of Antitrust And Regulation, Ewelina D. Sage Dec 2010

Who Controls Polish Transmission Masts? At The Intersection Of Antitrust And Regulation, Ewelina D. Sage

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

This paper will be devoted to the most acute point of intersection between sector specific regulation and the enforcement of competition law – a parallel scrutiny of the market position and behaviour of EMITEL TP, an incumbent infrastructure holder in the Polish broadcasting transmission field, by the national telecoms regulator and the antitrust authority. After presenting the relevant EU background, the discussion will focus on four basic factors that have influenced the relationship between antitrust and regulation in this case. The peculiarities of national legislation transposing the EU liberalisation package will be considered first, followed by the state of competition …

2008 And 2009 Eu Competition Law And Sector-Specific Regulatory Case Law Developments With A Nexus To Poland, Dagmara Kośka, Krzysztof Kuik

Yearbook of Antitrust and Regulatory Studies

The 2008 issue of YARS contained an overview of EU law developments in the period of time from 2004 to 2007. This overview covers the years 2008-2009. It confirms that State aid cases remained numerous (6 in total) and that the Commission’s enforcement activities in the area of State aid control continued at a similar pace as before. With respect to other areas of competition law and policy, the overall picture shows a relatively high level of scrutiny in mergers (5) and antitrust cases or inquiries (2). Moreover, EU Courts adopted several decisions in Polish cases, notably in the regulatory …

Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals

Titanium silicide compound was synthesized from the mixture of titanium and silicon powder with atomic ratios of 60:40 and 70:30. The powders were mixed by ball milling and pressed by different methods: by using uniaxial pressing at 64 MPa, cold isostatic pressing (CIP) at 200 MPa, hot forging (HF) at 648 MPa, and hot pressing (HP) at 24 MPa. The samples were then sintered at 1300o C or 1600o C for 2 hours soaking time in argon atmosphere. The sintered samples were subsequently characterized for phase constitution using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Ti5Si3 was observed as main compound of mixtures with …

Thermal Models For A 3 Cm Miniature Xenon Ion Thruster, Coleman Thomas Younger Dec 2010

Thermal Models For A 3 Cm Miniature Xenon Ion Thruster, Coleman Thomas Younger

Master's Theses

In order to support UCLA’s development of the 3 cm Miniature Xenon Ion (MiXI) thruster, Cal Poly has a 3 cm thruster under development. This version, called MiXI Cal Poly Version 1 (MiXI-CPv1), is complete and has been utilized in vacuum chamber thermal validation testing. Testing on this version was used to check the validity of heat transfer simulations modeled in SolidWorks. Investigations of the 3 cm ion thruster configuration were intended to discover the driving factors affecting the thermal behavior of the discharge chamber and surrounding design space.

Numerical simulations indicate that the heating of the samarium cobalt permanent …

Examining Relationship Interactions Of Adult Children Of Alcoholics, Diana I. Loera Dec 2010

Examining Relationship Interactions Of Adult Children Of Alcoholics, Diana I. Loera

Master's Theses

The following study explores the factors associated with security of romantic attachment in Adult Children of Alcoholics (ACOAs). ACOAs are more vulnerable to inconsistent parenting and consequently are more likely to develop negative internal models of self, a stable construct that affects romantic attachments (Bowlby, 1982; Ainsworth et al, 1989; Bartholomew, 1990). This study examined associations between parent, and peer relationships as possible resiliencies. It was hypothesized that ACOAs will report less secure attachments with their parents (as measured by the IPPA), less romantic attachment anxiety and avoidance (as measured by the ECR-R), and no significant difference in peer attachment …

Assessing Potential Industry Growth For Economic Development In Oakland, Ca, Sonia Aery

Master's Theses

This study prepares a set of career ladders for the population of Oakland. Career ladders are long-term progression pathways to help individuals advance, particularly in high wage, high growth careers. Career ladders combine different statistics on the demographics of a population with statistics about the area’s economic vitality and potential. This combination helps to identify the potential to strengthen an area’s economy and enhance individuals’ qualifications and wages.

One of the main reasons that people and large firms are attracted to a given city is the potential for economic stability. A stable economy is the result of the availability of …

Water Quality Performance Of A Reciprocating Biofilm Reactor For Treatment Of Dairy Wastewater, Jason Patrick Kane Dec 2010

Water Quality Performance Of A Reciprocating Biofilm Reactor For Treatment Of Dairy Wastewater, Jason Patrick Kane

Master's Theses

Removal of organic matter and nitrogen from concentrated wastewaters is often a complex and costly process that is rarely implemented in animal agriculture, such as the dairy industry, despite regulatory pressures and the high cost of land for manure application in some regions. This paper describes results from the first implementation for treatment of dairy farm wastewater of the relatively simple ReCip® technology. ReCip® typically consists of two basins filled with rock aggregate through which wastewater is flowed in series. One basin is full of wastewater and the other is only partially full. Wastewater is alternately pumped between the basins …

As of January 2010, California Polytechnic State University has offered a mobile development class that teaches students how to write applications for phones running Google’s Android platform. This class aims at taking advantage of students’ current in- terest in mobile applications to teach them about difficult computer science topics. As a corollary, the class hopes …

Modeling And Simulation Of Autonomous Thermal Soaring With Horizon Simulation Framework, Zhenhua Li Dec 2010

Modeling And Simulation Of Autonomous Thermal Soaring With Horizon Simulation Framework, Zhenhua Li

Master's Theses

A thermal is a column of warm rising air triggered by differential heating on the ground. In recent studies UAVs were programmed to exploit this free atmospheric energy from thermals to improve their range and endurance. Researchers had successfully flown UAVs autonomously with thermal soaring method. Most research involved some form of flight simulation. Improvements to the aircraft and thermal models for simulation purpose would enable researchers to better design their UAVs and explore any potential flaws in their designs. An aircraft simulation with a thermal environment was created in Horizon Simulation Framework, a modeling and verification framework that was …

The Arrest Of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Donald E. Wilkes Jr. Dec 2010

The Arrest Of Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Donald E. Wilkes Jr.

Popular Media

Police forces tend to be among the most secretive and least accountable of all organizations. When pressed for accountability or sued for malfeasance, obfuscation and evasiveness are the typical response. The phenomenon is hardly limited to certain countries or societies–the unassailability of police organizations seems to be universal.–Michael H. Fox The serve-and-protect model of police motivation that was drummed into police corps across the country in the aftermath of the response to anti-war demonstrations in the sixties and seventies has been heavily encroached on by the control-and-suppress model.–J. Ackerman The best motto for a police officer is that sticks and …

School Sector, School Poverty, And The Catholic School Advantage, Maureen T. Hallinan, Warren N. Kubitschek

Journal of Catholic Education

Equality of educational opportunity is threatened by long-standing gaps in student achievement by race, gender, and student poverty, as well as by school sector and school poverty. The true magnitude of these gaps cannot be understood, however, unless these factors are considered simultaneously. While accounting for the effects of demographic characteristics, this article focuses on the effects of school sector and school poverty on gains in academic achievement. Analyses from a longitudinal study of public and Catholic middle school students in and around the city of Chicago show that neither the public nor Catholic sector has a consistent advantage in …

Bemdec: An Adaptive And Robust Methodology For Digital Image Feature Extraction, Isaac Kueth Gang

Dissertations

The intriguing study of feature extraction, and edge detection in particular, has, as a result of the increased use of imagery, drawn even more attention not just from the field of computer science but also from a variety of scientific fields. However, various challenges surrounding the formulation of feature extraction operator, particularly of edges, which is capable of satisfying the necessary properties of low probability of error (i.e., failure of marking true edges), accuracy, and consistent response to a single edge, continue to persist. Moreover, it should be pointed out that most of the work in the area of feature …
