Using Environmental And Site-Specific Variables To Model Current And Future Distribution Of Red Spruce (Picea Rubens Sarg.) Forest Habitat In West Virginia, Nathan R. Beane
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Red spruce forests are a remnant ecosystem from the interglacial period of the Wisconsin glaciation and today are considered one of the most threatened forest ecosystems in the eastern United States. The extent of red spruce forests in West Virginia prior to exploitative logging which occurred from 1880--1920 is estimated at 190,000 ha, but today, these forests are estimated to occupy no more than 24,000 ha, resulting primarily from intense anthropogenic disturbances. With the extensive loss of presettlement habitat for red spruce in West Virginia, this species is a high priority for restoration, as these forests offer the unique habitat …
Understanding Plasmas Through Ion Velocity Distribution Function Measurements, Saikat Chakraborty Thakur
Understanding Plasmas Through Ion Velocity Distribution Function Measurements, Saikat Chakraborty Thakur
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This work concerns measurements of ion velocity distribution functions (IVDF) using three different diagnostic techniques in expanding argon plasmas generated by two different helicon plasma sources. A theoretical prediction by Lieberman et al., of enhanced upstream ionization by electrons accelerating upstream, due to the formation of a stable electrostatic current-free double layer (DL) in an expanding plasma, was verified through laser induced fluorescence (LIF) and retarding field energy analyzer (RFEA) measurements of the IVDF and Langmuir probe measurements of the plasma density. Keeping all other external source parameters constant and varying only the operating frequency of the helicon source HELIX, …

Economic Size And The Changing International Political Economy Of Trade: The Development Of Western Hemispheric Ftas, Gaspare Genna
Economic Size And The Changing International Political Economy Of Trade: The Development Of Western Hemispheric Ftas, Gaspare Genna
Departmental Papers (PS)
Why are some free trade agreements (FTAs) in the western hemisphere successfully negotiated and implemented while others seem to stagnate during negotiations? FTAs are more likely to develop when there is an asymmetrical power relationship and potential partners are satisfied with projected trade patterns. The European Union (EU) and United States have been successful in negotiating agreements with the Caribbean and Central American (CCA) countries. However, current bilateral and multilateral trade talks between the EU, the Common Market of the South (MERCOSUR), and United States are at a standstill. Although all four sets of trade negotiations include dissatisfactory conditions for …
Quality In Higher Education: Systems And Lifeworlds In Collision, Jeff Aper
Quality In Higher Education: Systems And Lifeworlds In Collision, Jeff Aper
International Education
Questions abound about the quality and purpose of American higher education in the early 21st century. Solutions have tended to be framed in terms of economic production and manufacturing quality control models, and these terms increasingly characterize state and federal systems of authority over colleges and universities. As Habermas theorized, system logic, left to its own devices, will ultimately overpower, or “colonize,” the day to day meaning making culture or “lifeworld” of the campus. This colonization runs at counter purposes to the essential foundation of meaning for authentic education. A solution is proposed, suggesting that a deeper base to higher …

One White Counselor Educator’S Process Of Racial Reeducation, Mary Fawcett
One White Counselor Educator’S Process Of Racial Reeducation, Mary Fawcett
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
Counselor educators introduce racial/cultural identity models in order for students to examine their own racial identity and learn the value of identifying the stage of racial/cultural identity development of their clients. While there is an abundance of literature about the multicultural training of White students, there is very little on training experiences of White counselor educators. It is by focusing on the competency training of White counselor educators that we can determine the cultural competence of trainees. I am a White woman that was raised in a racist community in the 1970’s and trained as licensed professional counselor during the …

Insurance, Stephen L. Cotter, Stephen M. Schatz, Bradley S. Wolff
Mercer Law Review
This survey year, from June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010, brought significant developments to a broad array of insurance fields. Both the Georgia Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit held that a cancellation notice for nonpayment of a premium can also contain an offer to reinstate upon payment in the "grace" period. The supreme court has strictly enforced basic concepts of "offer and acceptance" in the context of time-limit policy demands containing less than complete release and indemnity terms, thereby appearing to put insurers in "catch 22" situations with their insureds. A …

Real Property, Linda S. Finley
Mercer Law Review
The months since the last survey period from June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010, have continued to prove perilous to the nation as well as to the State of Georgia, as real estate values have plummeted and foreclosure of real property has reached an all time high. However, as this Article attempts to show, other issues concerning real property abound. As is the case each year, it is difficult to choose the few cases that may be surveyed from the numerous decisions affecting real property law. The cases in this Article were selected either for their legal significance, to …

Ibpi: Bicycle And Pedestrian Education Program, Jennifer Dill, Lynn Weigand, Karen Dixon
Urban Studies and Planning Faculty Publications and Presentations
Since the 1990s, the amount of attention and funding for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure has increased significantly. This, combined with the role of transportation in public health and environmental concerns, has raised expectations for engineering and planning practitioners to possess more knowledge and skills related to pedestrian and bicycle planning and design. This demand requires more education around these topics but university curriculum doesn?t reflect these important shifts in the field. This project was intended to begin addressing the need for more bicycle and pedestrian curriculum in two ways: (1) Determine the existence of and need for courses and curriculum …

Encircled By Sisterhood: Mentoring Experiences Of African American Women In Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Francene Amaris Breakfield
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
Research suggests that African American women are minorities by race and gender and the intersectionality of these constructs poses obstacles for African American women seeking to attain positions of power. Mentoring can aid African American women in overcoming these barriers. The purpose of this qualitative inquiry was to explore the mentoring experiences of five African American women, the researcher and her sorority sister circle, who are members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and how their experiences have contributed to their identity and educational, career, and psychosocial success. This study focused on mentoring as a support system for African American women …

Obesity, Metabolic Hormone Signaling, And Granulosa Cell Gene Expression, Elizabeth Mack
Obesity, Metabolic Hormone Signaling, And Granulosa Cell Gene Expression, Elizabeth Mack
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
It has become increasingly clear that female obesity is associated with a myriad of adverse side effects including abnormal female reproduction due, in part, to amenorrhea and anovulatory infertility. The lethal yellow (LY) mouse possesses a deletion mutation which results in ectopic expression of agouti and adult-onset obesity. Furthermore, LY mice exhibit premature loss of fertility, which has been associated with progressive obesity making the LY mouse line an excellent model to study the effects of obesity-dependent factors on ovarian function. In the current study blood serum and granulosa cells were obtained from LY (Ay/a) and age-matched B6 controls (C57BL/6J) …

Ethanol Byproduct Feeds: Determining Accurate Fiber Content, Nutrient Composition And Variability, Storing With Low-Quality Forages, And Fiber Utilization In Finishing Diets, Crystal D. Buckner
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The growing ethanol industry has produced vast quantities of distillers grains plus solubles (DGS) in the wet (WDGS) and dry forms and Sweet Bran wet corn gluten feed (SB). Previous research has demonstrated that these byproduct feeds result in improved feeding values compared to grass in growing diets and corn in finishing diets, with positive economic returns. Four experiments were conducted to evaluate dry matter determination methods and variability of nutrient composition for WDGS, determining the accurate method for measuring NDF in corn and DGS, compare feeding WDGS mixed with straw as either fresh or ensiled, and evaluate fiber digestibility …
Distillers' Grains With Solubles For Feedlot Cattle: Finishing Performance, Lipid Metabolism, And Ethanol Greenhouse Gas Balance, Virgil R. Bremer
Distillers' Grains With Solubles For Feedlot Cattle: Finishing Performance, Lipid Metabolism, And Ethanol Greenhouse Gas Balance, Virgil R. Bremer
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Previous University of Nebraska feedlot research trials have characterized the feed value of wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS). These trials were summarized with meta-analysis methodology and indicated the feed value of WDGS interacts with corn processing type, cattle age (calf-fed or yearling), and inclusion level. Two steer finishing studies and a metabolism study were conducted to understand the impact of different lipid sources in WDGS on WDGS feed value. A biphasic lipid extraction procedure was developed to analyze feed samples from these trials that was more effective than Goldfisch ether extraction at lipid analysis of byproduct feds. These trials …
