The Cd-Te Phase Diagram, Robert F. Brebrick
The Cd-Te Phase Diagram, Robert F. Brebrick
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
The properties of the liquid phase in the Cd–Te system are fit using thermodynamic properties of CdTe(c) recently optimized by the author. These include a high temperature heat capacity significantly lower than commonly used such that the enthalpy of formation of CdTe(c) at its melting point is about 10 kJ/mol less negative than previously thought. An associated solution model with Cd, CdTe, and Te species is used. Seven adjustable parameters are sufficient to quantitatively fit the liquidus and partial pressures of Te2 and Cd. Additional partial pressures for Te rich CdTe(c) near its melting point are extracted from an …

Personality And Politics: Introduction To The Special Issue, Lauren E. Duncan, Bill E. Peterson, Eileen L. Zurbriggen
Psychology: Faculty Publications
This special issue of Journal of Personality brings together 10 original articles addressing the intersection of personality and politics. Articles build on classic traditions in political psychology by presenting both idiographic and nomothetic work on the motivational, cognitive, ideological, attitudinal, and identity correlates of many different aspects of political behavior. This work is used to understand political activism and leadership as well as everyday political behavior. We hope this collection of articles will inspire our readers to explore new investigations in personality and political psychology.
Frequency And Severity Approaches To Indexing Exposure To Trauma: The Critical Incident History Questionnaire For Police Officers, Daniel S. Weiss, Alain Brunet, Suzanne R. Best, Thomas J. Metzler, Akiva Liberman, Nnamdi Pole, Jeffrey A. Fagan, Charles R. Marmar
Frequency And Severity Approaches To Indexing Exposure To Trauma: The Critical Incident History Questionnaire For Police Officers, Daniel S. Weiss, Alain Brunet, Suzanne R. Best, Thomas J. Metzler, Akiva Liberman, Nnamdi Pole, Jeffrey A. Fagan, Charles R. Marmar
Psychology: Faculty Publications
The Critical Incident History Questionnaire indexes cumulative exposure to traumatic incidents in police by examining incident frequency and rated severity. In over 700 officers, event severity was negatively correlated (rs = -61) with frequency of exposure. Cumulative exposure indices that varied emphasis on frequency and severity-using both nomothetic and idiographic methods-all showed satisfactory psychometric properties and similar correlates. All indices were only modestly related to posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms. Ratings of incident severity were not influenced by whether officers had ever experienced the incident. Because no index summarizing cumulative exposure to trauma had superior validity, our findings suggest that …
The Speaking Cognitions And Attention Scale: An Empirically-Derived Measure Of Public Speaking Anxiety, Robert Drew Beck
The Speaking Cognitions And Attention Scale: An Empirically-Derived Measure Of Public Speaking Anxiety, Robert Drew Beck
Dissertations
Although public speaking anxiety is one of the most commonly reported causes of both clinical and non-clinical anxiety, many of the currently used questionnaire measures of public speaking anxiety do not reflect the advances made in recent decades regarding empirical methods of test construction, including item generation and determination of subscale composition. The current study administered 35 empirically-generated cognitive self-statement items related to speaking anxiety to a sample of 367 undergraduate students along with measures of public speaking anxiety, fear of negative evaluation, generalized social anxiety behaviors, and self-consciousness tendencies. Using exploratory factor analysis and item-total correlations, participant responses to …

This article is more of a political statement, though the author has no particular interest in politics. It is borne out of the realisation that politics play a major role in national education systems and successes, or, put the other way round, national education is positively or adversely affected by national politics. National policy formulation and budgetary allocations are political processes. The article therefore looks at a cross-section of issues affecting the Kenyan system with a particular interest in the accusations of weakness and failure in order to find a hope and a probable solution. It dwells mostly on local …
Clinical Evidence Of Ozone Interaction With Pain Mediators, Lamberto Re, Gregorio M. Sanchez, Nabil Mawsouf
Clinical Evidence Of Ozone Interaction With Pain Mediators, Lamberto Re, Gregorio M. Sanchez, Nabil Mawsouf
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVE: To address the clinical evidence that may support the fact that subcutaneous administration of ozone has anti-hyperalgesic effects probably acting by modifying specific pain targets. METHODS: Fifty-two patients attending the Medinat Clinic, Camerano, Ancona, Italy between October 2004 to October 2009 were eligible to participate in the study. Panoramic photos of painful and not painful areas submitted to oxygen /ozone treatment injection were analyzed to detect the intensity of erythema. RESULTS: The erythematic areas after ozone subcutaneous puncture showed significant (p<0.05) increment (83±5%) in the painful area versus 7±6% in the contralateral area. CONCLUSION: The surrounding erythema observed during ozone intervention should explain at least in part, its interaction with some pain mediators. This may involve algesic mediators or receptors. The analgesic mechanism induced by oxygen/ozone may involve 2 independent steps: a short-term mechanism that may correspond with the direct oxidation on biomolecules, and a long-term mechanism that may involve the activation of antioxidant pathways. Further studies are needed to support the biochemical analgesic mechanism of ozone therapy.

Prof. Doug Ruthven and Prof. Jörg Kärger are two giants in the field of zeolite science and engineering. Over their academic careers encompassing almost forty years each, they have contributed significantly to the advancement of fundamental understanding of adsorption and diffusion in zeolites as well as their industrial applications. The author, in the beginning of his academic career, had an opportunity to spend two years as a post-doctoral fellow in Prof. Ruthven’s laboratory at the University of New Brunswick (1975–1977). This experience actually motivated me to spend my academic career in working in the field of zeolite adsorption and …
Synthesis Of Reversible Circuits For Large Reversible Functions, Marek Perkowski, Nouraddin Alhagi, Maher Hawash
Synthesis Of Reversible Circuits For Large Reversible Functions, Marek Perkowski, Nouraddin Alhagi, Maher Hawash
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper presents a new algorithmMP (multiple pass) to synthesize large reversible binary circuits without ancilla bits. The well-known MMD algorithm for synthesis of reversible circuits requires to store a truth table (or a Reed-Muller - RM transform) as a 2n vector to represent a reversible function of n variables. This representation prohibits synthesis of large functions. However, in MP we do not store such an exponentially growing data structure. The values of minterms are calculated in MP dynamically, one-by-one, from a set of logic equations that specify the reversible circuit to be designed. This allows for synthesis of large …
Productivity, Discrimination, And Lost Profits During Baseball's Integration, Jonathan Lanning
Productivity, Discrimination, And Lost Profits During Baseball's Integration, Jonathan Lanning
Economics Faculty Research and Scholarship
This article uses data from Major League Baseball's integration to identify the sources and magnitude of labor market discrimination. Returns to hiring black workers in this industry were high, and the industry's labor supply was uniquely suited for rapid integration, yet integration evolved slowly. Many explanations for this sluggishness are considered, including both taste-based and statistical discrimination. Ultimately, only owner and collective coworker discrimination can explain baseball's slow pace of integration. The estimated levels of discrimination are high, showing the median team sacrificed profits of nearly $2.2 million in 1950 dollars (over $19 million 2010 dollars) by delaying integration.

The Supreme Court’S Assault On Litigation: Why (And How) It Could Be Good For Health Law, Abigail R. Moncrieff
The Supreme Court’S Assault On Litigation: Why (And How) It Could Be Good For Health Law, Abigail R. Moncrieff
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
In recent years, the Supreme Court has narrowed or eliminated private rights of action in many legal regimes, much to the chagrin of the legal academy. That trend, although certainly not limited to health law, has had a significant impact on the field; the Court's decisions have eliminated the private enforcement mechanism for at least three important healthcare regimes: Medicaid, employer-sponsored insurance, and medical devices. In a similar trend outside the courts, state legislatures have capped non-economic and punitive damages for medical malpractice litigation, weakening the tort system's deterrent capacity in those states. This Article suggests that the trend of …

Iota-Carrageenan Hydrolysis By Pseudoalteromonas Carrageenovora Ifo12985, Bernadette M. Henares, Erwin P. Enriquez, Fabian M. Dayrit, Nina Rosario L. Rojas
Chemistry Faculty Publications
We report iota-carrageenan hydrolysis by Pseudoalteromonas carrageenovora IFO 12985. Kappa-carrageenase and lambda-carrageenase were previously isolated from this organism, but iota-carrageenase activity had not been reported in the literature. P. carrageenovora was grown in iota-carrageenan-based liquid medium. Using the zone of depression assay, transfer of aliquots of the culture to solid medium with 2% iota- and kappa-carrageenan showed extensive hydrolysis of iota-carrageenan. Analysis of the hydrolysates by C-13 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance spectroscopy confirmed degradation of the iota-carrageenan. Hydrolytic activity of P. carrageenovora grown in iota-carrageenan was compared with that of the same organism grown in kappa-carrageenan. Cell-free supernatants from each yielded …

Optimizing In Vitro Propagation Of Rosa Persica, Maryam Jafarkhani-Kermani, Pegah Khosravi, Somayeh Kavand
Publications and Research
Rosa persica with a distinctive red eye is a good candidate for addition to the breeding pool of roses. In order to optimize micropropagation of R. persica, three culture media (MS, QL and VS) were compared. The maximum growth rate was observed in the VS medium. Addition of FeEDTA (Fe: 65.4 mg/l), calcium gluconate (Cg: 2.7 g/l) and Gamborg vitamins (B5) instead of VS vitamins, alone or in combinationwith VS medium were compared. The maximum growth rate was obtained in the medium containing VS + Cg + B5 (VSCgB5). Various concentrations of BAP (0, 2, 4 and 8 μM ) …

A Fiber Bragg Grating-Based All-Fiber Sensing Systems For Telerobotic Cutting Applications, Ginu Rajan, Dean Callaghan, Yuliya Semenova, Mark Mcgrath, Eugene Coyle, Gerald Farrell
Articles
A fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based strain sensing system for minimally invasive telerobotic cutting applications is presented in this paper. Investigations assume that a scissor blade can be approximated as a uniformly tapered cantilever beam. A replica of the scissor blade is produced and strain characterization has been carried out using an FBG sensor system. Results are validated against measurements obtained using conventional electrical resistance strain gauges. The scissor blade experiences both direct and lateral forces during cutting, hence the system is characterized for a direct load range of 0-30 N and a lateral load range of 0-10 N. The results …

A confirmatory method has been developed to allow for the analysis of fourteen prohibited medicinal additives in pig and poultry compound feed. These compounds are prohibited for use as feed additives although some are still authorised for use in medicated feed. Feed samples are extracted by acetonitrile with addition of sodium sulphate. The extracts undergo a hexane wash to aid with sample purification. The extracts are then evaporated to dryness and reconstituted in initial mobile phase. The samples undergo an ultracentrifugation step prior to injection onto the LC-MS/MS system and are analysed in a run time of 26 minutes. The …

Combining Mobile Technologies For Accurate, Open Source, Privacy Sensitive, Zero Cost, Location Determination, Seamus Rooney
Doctoral
Determining the location of an object or individual using a mobile device (e.g. cell phone) is an important aspect of modern information gathering. Various solutions have been proposed which all have their strengths and weaknesses. To date, no solution has been devised for a mobile device that will work effectively in multiple environments and without assistance from network-provider connections1. To address this, it is argued that the current state of the art can be advanced using a hybrid approach that combines a number of sensor technologies to provide a more reliable, and accurate mobile location determination that functions in multiple …

The second and main survey targeted Irish home owners in order to understand their perceptions of and attitudes to microgeneration. …
The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
The Generation Of Domestic Electricity Load Profiles Through Markov Chain Modelling, Fintan Mcloughlin, Aidan Duffy, Michael Conlon
Articles
Micro-generation technologies such as photovoltaics and micro-wind power are becoming increasing popular among homeowners, mainly a result of policy support mechanisms helping to improve cost competiveness as compared to traditional fossil fuel generation. National government strategies to reduce electricity demand generated from fossil fuels and to meet European Union 20/20/20 targets is driving this change. However, the real performance of these technologies in a domestic setting is not often known as high time resolution models for domestic electricity load profiles are not readily available. As a result, projections in terms of reducing electricity demand and financial paybacks for these micro-generation …

UF Law Faculty Publications
It is rare that a court as sophisticated as the Florida Supreme Court casually makes a fundamental mistake in an important area of the law. Unfortunately, Saleeby v. Rocky Elson Construction, Inc., 3 So. 3d 1078 (Fla. 2009) represents one of these unusual instances. The Court was faced with a simple question: may evidence pertaining to a prior settlement be offered at trial when it is relevant to something other than liability or the invalidity or amount of the pending claim. The universal answer under both federal law and the law of other states is yes, as long as …
