The Contribution Of Wildlife To Sustainable Natural Resource Utilization In Namibia: A Review, Diana L.Schalkwyk Van Schalkwyk, Kenneth W. Mcmillin, R. Corli Witthuhn, Louw C. Hoffman

Faculty Publications

Namibia is the driest country in sub-Saharan Africa, but well known for its richness in species and sustainable natural resource utilization. The Namibian farming sector consists mainly of extensive farming systems. Cattle production contributes 54% of the livestock sector's production output, followed by sheep and goats (25%), hides and skins (9%), and other forms of agricultural production (12%). Namibia's freehold farmers have obtained ownership rights over land and livestock since the early 1900s; commercial rights over wildlife and plants were given to freehold farmers in 1967 and to communal farmers in 1996. Natural resource-based production systems then overtook agricultural production …

Bb0250 Of Borrelia Burgdorferi Is A Conserved And Essential Inner Membrane Protein Required For Cell Division, Fang Ting Liang, Qilong Xu, Rakesh Sikdar, Ying Xiao, James S. Cox, William T. Doerrler

Faculty Publications

The gene bb0250 of Borrelia burgdorferi is a homolog of the dedA family, encoding integral inner membrane proteins that are present in nearly all species of bacteria. To date, no precise function has been attributed to any dedA gene. Unlike many bacterial species, such as Escherichia coli, which has eight dedA genes, B. burgdorferi possesses only one, annotated bb0250, providing a unique opportunity to investigate the functions of the dedA family. Here, we show that bb0250 is able to restore normal growth and cell division to a temperature-sensitive E. coli mutant with simultaneous deletions of two dedA genes, yqjA and …

Nf-Κb Translocation In Response To Different Lps Chemotypes In Murine Macrophages, Elizabeth L. Carles Dec 2010

Nf-Κb Translocation In Response To Different Lps Chemotypes In Murine Macrophages, Elizabeth L. Carles

Biology ETDs

Nuclear Factor κB (NF-κB) proteins make up a large family of eukaryotic transcription factors that regulate many important cellular functions, including cell signaling, cell growth, development, cell death by apoptosis, and immune and inflammatory responses, and has been shown to be involved in multiple human diseases. NF-κB proteins are subject to careful regulation in the cell, and are regulated at multiple levels. A family of inhibitory proteins exist (called IκB proteins) which bind to NF-κB and cause it to be localized in the cytoplasm. There are multiple signal transduction pathways that can lead to the activation of NF-κB. These signal …

The Spatial Ecology Of Galapagos Tortoises And New Mexico's Reptiles, Jacek Tomasz Giermakowski Dec 2010

The Spatial Ecology Of Galapagos Tortoises And New Mexico's Reptiles, Jacek Tomasz Giermakowski

Biology ETDs

The analysis of spatial processes and spatial heterogeneity is an important part of ecology because distribution of organisms in space partly defines ecology as a discipline. In addition, advances in analysis of DNA, geographical computing and the availability of vast amounts of environmental data obtained by satellites provide new opportunities for studying ecology at different spatial and phylogenetic scales. My research takes advantage of information gathered by satellites and adds modeling and data collected on the distribution of different reptiles to examine processes at various spatial and temporal scales. In Chapter 1 I describe how juvenile Galapagos tortoises change their …

Characterization Of Watersheds On Fort Benning Military Reservation: Comparison Of Field Data To Watershed Parameters, Melinda Rosetta Stahl

Theses and Dissertations

Sixteen watersheds located on Fort Benning Military Installation in Georgia were analyzed using both physically collected data and computer modeling data. Physical data collected included total suspended solids (TSS) and grain size analysis using the Wolman Pebble Count method. Computer modeling analyzed the watersheds using ArcGIS 9.3 for comparison to physical data. Land use, slope, and soil data were used in a modified revised universal soil loss equation (RUSLE) to create a soil erodibility index map. Wolman Pebble Count data showed that in half of the watersheds, 84% of the sampled grains were less than half a millimeter in size. …

The Isotopic Composition Of Light-Enhanced Dark Respiration (Ledr) In C3 And C4 Plants, Susan Christy Mirabal Dec 2010

The Isotopic Composition Of Light-Enhanced Dark Respiration (Ledr) In C3 And C4 Plants, Susan Christy Mirabal

Biology ETDs

Light-enhanced dark respiration (LEDR) has been studied in C3 plants as a method to elucidate the careful balance between photosynthesis and respiration yet little is known about the metabolic properties by which it occurs in C4 plants. Using a tunable diode laser gas exchange system, we analyzed transient isotopic shifts in leaf-respired CO2 associated with LEDR at 10Hz frequency from Populus deltoides (C3), Amaranthus hypochondriacus (C4 NAD-ME), and Zea mays (C4 NADP-ME). The results suggest that:

(1) Post-photosynthetic fractionations are different between C3 and C4 (and within C4) plants, where A. hypochondriacus exhibited an unexpected LEDR response (Fig. 3, Table …

Groping For Intimacy: Modern Man's "Pressure" And The Onanistic Inversion Of Christianity, Marriage, And The Nuclear Family In Three American Novels, Nicholas Scott Olson Dec 2010

Groping For Intimacy: Modern Man's "Pressure" And The Onanistic Inversion Of Christianity, Marriage, And The Nuclear Family In Three American Novels, Nicholas Scott Olson

Masters Theses

Several critics have suggested that modernity's most fundamental theme is autonomy. Yet, few critics have considered Søren Kierkegaard's thought in relation to autonomous notions of freedom, and even fewer literary critics have considered Kierkegaard's vast influence - particularly on twentieth-century American authors - through this thematic lens. Michelle Kosch has argued that Kierkegaard's notion of despair essentially involves the self's misunderstanding of the nature of his freedom, while Samuel Loncar has argued that Kierkegaard's thought in this regard can be traced back through the German Enlightenment to Immanuel Kant's notion of autonomy. Yet, while Kierkegaard offers a fine critique of …

Using Knowledge Building To Support Deep Learning, Collaboration And Innovation In Engineering Education, Glenn W. Ellis, Alan N. Rudnitsky, Mary A. Moriarty

Engineering: Faculty Publications

Knowledge building is a potentially transformative approach to engineering education. In knowledge building students participate in an interactive discourse in which they work together to broaden ideas, reform problems and share knowledge - the result being a deeper level of understanding and the collaborative production of new knowledge. In 2009 we conducted a knowledge building pilot study in the Picker Engineering Program at Smith College. In this study students worked together to formulate a question about the potential for a conscious machine and then engaged in an intensive knowledge building discourse. Assessment data showing the effectiveness of the approach and …

Campus Assessment Of Building Heating Energy Consumption-Informing The Climate Action Plan, E. Grover-Silva, D. A. Mckahn, D. Weisbord

Engineering: Faculty Publications

We present a methodology to assess the technical feasibility of building thermal energy reduction strategies from an architecturally diverse building stock that is not metered. While carbon emissions forecasting efforts are typically the domain of planning and policy, the process detailed here can inform institutional decision-making relative to investments in renewable energy, infrastructure, and offsets to further reduce carbon footprint. As a case study, we estimated the Smith College campus building thermal energy losses, an analysis which informed our Sustainability and Climate Action Plan [1]. Due to building specific physical constraints and planned renovations, different thermal envelope improvement scenarios were …

Centering The Voices Of South Carolina's Early Care And Education Teachers: A Multi-Case Study Examining How They Select And Are Informed By Professional Development, Lenna Young

All Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to contribute to the existing literature focused on quality early care and education (ECE). Specifically, this study examines two main research questions: (1) How do teachers in South Carolina licensed, privately-funded ECE programs select professional development opportunities and (2) How does participating in professional development inform their practices? These questions are particularly significant in light of the minimal requirements for teachers to enter the ECE field in South Carolina. Due to the low entry requirements for ECE teachers, professional development can play a key role in transforming minimally qualified individuals into teachers who care …

The Political Economy Of Currency Re-Denomination By Countries., Peter Nwaoba Dec 2010

The Political Economy Of Currency Re-Denomination By Countries., Peter Nwaoba

Bullion

In the view of the Bank, redenomination policy for Nigeria was not to translate to revaluation, as market forces were to continue to determine the prices, including interest rates and exchange rates, with the expectation that inflation will be low while exchange rate will appreciate. The objective of this paper is to articulate the reasons and conditions under which countries embark on currency redenomination exercises, and how successful these exercises had been over the years. The paper is descriptive with presentation based on literature reviews. Under the redenomination programme, banknotes were to be issued in denominations of new 50k (old …

Concerning The Constitutionality Of Hydro-Fracking The Marcellus Shale, Sean Dillon Dec 2010

Concerning The Constitutionality Of Hydro-Fracking The Marcellus Shale, Sean Dillon

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

The entire Marcellus Shale, from the Catskills of New York down to the northwestern border of West Virginia, is estimated to contain as little as 168 to as much as 516 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, resulting in major “shale play” in the region. If calculations are accurate, the Marcellus Shale may be one of the largest potential sources of any type of energy in this country. But the prospect of mining the Marcellus Shale is not without its downfalls. The extraction method to be used in these operations - a technique called hydraulic fracturing, also known as “hydro-fracking” …

Two Endangered Species In The Adirondacks In The Context Of Constitutional “Wilderness”, Michael A. Dibrizzi Dec 2010

Two Endangered Species In The Adirondacks In The Context Of Constitutional “Wilderness”, Michael A. Dibrizzi

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

Our society has developed with a distinct homocentric view toward the natural world and all of its inhabitants. Wildlife has mostly been regarded as the exclusive chattel of man to dispense with at his discretion. This attitude has led to the extinction of some species and near extinction of many others. Through legislation, lawmakers have attempted to regulate management and exploitation of different species, with varying success. The goal of good environmental regulations is to break from traditional views; regulations in recognizing man’s superiority and control over the natural world will impose a responsibility on man to protect and preserve …

Wildlife Management And The Forest Preserve, Jeffrey Auger Dec 2010

Wildlife Management And The Forest Preserve, Jeffrey Auger

Article Xiv, Agriculture, And Keeping New York’S Wilderness Wild, Hilary Atkin

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

When the constitutional convention question is put on the ballot in 2017 as required by Article XIX, Section two of the New York State Constitution, the voters of New York will again choose whether to have a convention to revise or replace their Constitution. There are many issues related to the Forest Preserves of New York State that may lead delegates to consider whether Article XIV, Section one’s “forever wild” provision should be amended or eliminated. With the increasing popularity of the local farming movement in and around the Adirondack and Catskill Parks, delegates could consider amendments that clarify the …

A Trusting Public: How The Public Trust Doctrine Can Save The New York Forest Preserve, Katherine R. Leisch Dec 2010

A Trusting Public: How The Public Trust Doctrine Can Save The New York Forest Preserve, Katherine R. Leisch

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Student Publications

The public trust doctrine was instituted in England as a permanent limitation on the powers of the Crown. The well-established doctrine was brought to America and applied equally in the states even after the states seceded from England. The doctrine has since served as an indestructible check on the government. Article XIV of the New York State Constitution ensures protection of its wilderness in perpetuity, solidifying the forest preserve as part of the public trust. The paper traces the beginnings of the public trust doctrine and its eventual application Article XIV. The author contemplates the indestructibility of the Forest Preserve …

Know Thyself: The Importance Of Humanism In Education, Laura Zucca-Scott Dec 2010

Know Thyself: The Importance Of Humanism In Education, Laura Zucca-Scott

International Education

Current and past reforms have attempted to address the challenges of the educational world. There are undoubtedly reasons for concern as illiteracy and high school dropout rates are still haunting figures in the United States (Institute of Education Sciences, 2010; National Assessment of Literacy, 2010). Thus, the need for improvement in the U.S. educational system is undeniable. However, education without true appreciation for the uniqueness of each and every individual is an empty endeavor. An important lesson can be learned from international experiences and the classical tradition of humanism.
